Hello! My name is Somachi Amadi. I’m currently 19 years old and pursuing my Bachelors’ in Music Performance. My goal is to perform internationally, open a voice studio so I can teach and inspire young, driven singers, and I hope to one day support or sponsor young dreamers like myself. Though I have been singing for school events since the second grade, most of my more professional singing was in high school with the Boston City Singers(BCS) Tour Choir based in Massachusetts, led in part by founder Jane Money. I joined them in 2018, where I sang as a tenor and had a place in their World Rhythm Ensemble, which incorporates many styles of percussion from Africa, the Caribbean, and all over the world. At the end of that academic year, we took a tour through Central Europe, visiting and putting on almost daily concerts in The Czech Republic, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Croatia, all within the span of about 3 and a half weeks. During my time with BCS, I took on the position of Peer Leader from 2020-2022, serving as a connection between the singers and the staff. I helped to motivate my fellow singers and provided a friendly and productive environment to foster learning and confidence, especially with our newer and younger singers. Briefly after my 4 years with BCS, the Music Director of the Tour Choir that I joined had referred me to a two-week Vocal/Choral Intensive(VCI) Program offered by the Boston Conservatory. My family didn’t want to support this endeavor, so Jane reached out during my application process and found funding for me to attend. The VCI program consisted of about 50 high school-age singers like me, all of them extremely gifted and driven. I felt completely outclassed. I had to learn how to be a recitalist as well as improve my choir singing. I had a very slow start, but with the support of my voice coach and my peers, I was able to contend with everyone and enjoy every step of it. This was the experience that opened my eyes to the possibility of cultivating my talents even further and even performing full time. I had a hunger to grow and prove to my family that I could survive and still have a dream. During my time at college, I have become a part of the school’s Concert Choir, as well as honing my gifts as a solo performer in my studio rehearsals. I also joined the school acapella group, Chock Full of Notes, where I currently serve as the Music Director. I plan to gain practical experience after getting my degree with the Tundi opera house in Brattleboro, Vermont or ideally with the Zenith Ensemble based around Keene. I also hope to one day continue my education at the Boston Conservatory to get my Masters in Vocal Pedagogy and open a voice studio of my own. Since my early childhood, I have always had a passion for music, particularly singing. Music has always been my preferred avenue of self expression and has allowed me to foster very strong bonds with other musicians, as well as other people too. Music has given me so many fantastic opportunities. It’s my dream to be a renowned tenor like Lawrence Brownlee and to give hope to little kids who look like me with tough immigrant parents and a dream. I want to show myself and all the people who believe in me that our investment was worth it. Thank you for your time and consideration.
