My greatest achievement to date is becoming a father and teaching my kids what I lacked and didn't have as a kid. I grew up without a father present and being a black male that could have had serious consequences. This milestone represents not only a victory over adversity but also a testament to my resilience and determination. It taught me that I possess the ability to persevere through difficult circumstances and emerge stronger, with a renewed sense of purpose and ambition. This achievement came during a time when I faced my family losing our house but continuing balancing academics with caregiving responsibilities, navigating the challenges of being a first-generation college student or overcoming self-doubt and external pressures throughout. I had to push myself beyond my limits, relying on discipline, time management, and the unwavering support of those who believed in me. The experience forced me to confront my fears, embrace my strengths, and redefine what was possible for my future. The process of reaching this accomplishment taught me that I am more resilient and resourceful than I initially realized. I learned to adapt, stay focused, and maintain hope even in the face of uncertainty. These acts of service have demanded patience, empathy, and dedication, and while at times overwhelming, they have also been deeply rewarding. It serves not only as a pathway to personal success but as a beacon of hope, resilience, and transformation. For a young Black male such as myself, education is essential for several reasons. It equips individuals with knowledge and skills to navigate a world that often presents systemic barriers. Whether learning about history, science, or financial literacy, education provides the foundation to critically analyze societal structures and advocate for change. It fosters independence, allowing young men to make informed decisions about their careers, finances, and lives. Additionally, education instills confidence and ambition. A young Black male attending school, earning a degree, or excelling academically is breaking stereotypes and redefining possibilities. It provides the validation and courage to pursue dreams that might otherwise seem unattainable. The sense of accomplishment derived from academic achievement serves as motivation for continual growth and development. One significant way education brings value is through exposure. It opens doors to diverse perspectives, cultures, and opportunities. For example, studying business, accounting, or finance—as supported by the Augustus L. Harper Scholarship—can help young Black males enter fields where their voices and leadership are underrepresented. They gain the skills needed to innovate, lead, and inspire change in their industries. Education also fosters community impact. A young Black male who has benefited from education is likely to reinvest in his community, whether through mentorship, activism, or creating economic opportunities. For instance, take the life of Augustus L. Harper himself—his dedication to education not only transformed his life but empowered him to serve as a teacher, professor, and president of the National Association of Black Accountants. In my view, education doesn’t just provide tools to succeed—it also cultivates resilience, character, and leadership. For a young Black male striving to escape poverty or challenge inequity, it is a reminder that every effort toward learning is an investment in the future. It is the key to breaking chains, shattering ceilings, and building bridges to a brighter tomorrow. A young Black male and really anyone can look back and attribute much of their success to education. The value lies not only in academic and professional achievement but in the growth of his identity, confidence, and ability to uplift others. Education is, ultimately, the greatest equalizer—a force that empowers him to rise above challenges and thrive. Through education, dreams transform into actions, and actions become legacies.

Growing up as a young Black male in a tough neighborhood, I faced many challenges that could have easily derailed my life. But despite the obstacles, I persevered and overcame one of the biggest hurdles: finding purpose and direction. One of the darkest moments was when my family lost our home due to foreclosure. We had to move to a shelter, and I felt like my world was crumbling. But in that shelter, I discovered a small stamp collection that belonged to a volunteer. She showed me the different countries, designs, and stories behind each stamp. For the first time, I saw a world beyond my circumstances. Philately became my escape and passion. I spent hours learning about different cultures, histories, and achievements. It taught me about resilience, diversity, and the beauty of connection. I realized that even in the darkest moments, there is always hope and beauty to be found. This scholarship would be a game-changer for me. It would allow me to pursue my dreams, give back to my community, and inspire others to find their purpose. I plan to create a philately program for underprivileged youth, providing them with the same opportunity that I had. I want to show them that there's a world beyond their circumstances, that they too can overcome adversity and achieve greatness. To encourage young people to pursue philately, I would share my story and show them how it changed my life. I would organize workshops, exhibitions, and mentorship programs, highlighting the fun and educational aspects of stamp collecting. I would also partner with schools and community centers to make philately accessible to all. Through philately, I found my voice, my purpose, and my passion. This scholarship would enable me to pay it forward, empowering others to do the same. Together, we can create a ripple effect of hope, resilience, and beauty – one stamp at a time. Now as Grown adult that is still learning and pursuing better career growth, another one of my main goals is to give my children better opportunities than I had. I strongly believe parents can shape their children futures. Teaching them resilience, and to manage stress is a must for me. Those two things were taught to me by my family and I can completely point to that and say that's why I'm still here today. Giving up is not an option. Failures are not Failures, but instead they are opportunities to learn.
