My name is Sofia Fiaschi. I’m 20 years old, I’m Italian, and I’m studying biology at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. I’m currently in my second semester, and the courses I’m taking are biology, chemistry, English, sociology, and various lab classes. I first arrived in the United States in 2024, where I stayed with a wonderful host family in Wisconsin, and I returned after graduating from high school in Italy to attend college. My dream is to become a doctor. I’m currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in biology, and I really enjoy the research-oriented approach. I am applying for this scholarship because I want to help my family; I don’t want to be a burden anymore, and I’d like to spare them the expenses that are very high for an international student. This first year, I’ve dedicated myself to my studies; I wanted to focus on raising my GPA, which went from a 3.2 upon admission to a 2.9 in the first semester and is currently around 3.6. I have worked very hard because I want to achieve my goals and make my dreams come true through my own efforts. Research is a fundamental part of medicine; my dream is to do everything possible so that families don’t lose loved ones the way I did. My grandmother died within a year after being diagnosed with an incurable form of cancer. It was too soon for her to spend time with me; unfortunately, I was too young. Thanks to research, this must never happen again. Each of us must have the chance and the hope to cure our loved ones—at least to have that hope. This is one of the reasons why I want to become a doctor: to be of help, to try to change the fate of families, and to try to give them a hope that we currently lack for certain diseases. Ever since I was in elementary school, I’ve said I want to be a doctor. This led me to pursue a scientific path of study, from my high school diploma in the science track to the present day. It hasn’t all been easy; the post-COVID period was very difficult to cope with, but with the help of my family and my therapist, I came through it stronger and more determined to achieve my goals. My family has always been my strength and has stood by me, helping me through both the good times and the bad. They are still with me today. It wasn’t easy to pack my life into two suitcases and move to a new state, leaving behind people and friends… but I am proud of myself, of my strength, and of my determination. These are the reasons why I believe I am a suitable candidate for the scholarship. Thank you

My name is Fiaschi Sofia and I am an international student at the University of Wisconsin – Platteville. I am attending the degree in biology to be able to access the School of Medicine. My dream is to be a doctor. I chose the United States because I think there are more advanced tools to be able to make my dream come true. I am passionate about technology because I think it is a research tool that can make doctors make a leap in quality, both in research and in instrumentation. I think of technology as a fundamental innovation tool for the new generations. New instruments that can operate where previously it was not possible to reach. New research tools that allow us to discover new treatments or new diseases before there is nothing more to do. In Technology I see the future for new treatments, to help prevention, new interventions with new machinery. The scholarship would allow me to continue my studies, focus on my dream and try to make a difference in the world of medicine. Compared to Italy, I see the United States as a more difficult possibility for me as an international student to achieve, but more advanced in the result. In 10 years I see myself as a doctor, working in a hospital while studying for specialization. As a surgeon there will certainly be new possibilities of intervention with new machinery, we will give people the opportunity to treat themselves or operate where it was not possible before. I see myself talking to patients, comforting them and trying to give that hope that until a few years ago we could not give. This is what I see thanks to technology: new research, new instrumentation, new hopes. Technology must not be seen only as a replacement for the human being but must be seen as a support to the human being, it must implement and develop the skills of the human being for a better job, whatever it may be. In all fields, technology must be seen as an added value and not as an obstacle or a replacement of something or someone.

My name is Sofia Fiaschi, I'm Italian and I'm studying at an American college. I am an International student. My first experience in the United States was in January 2024 doing 6 months in a host family. I felt very good, I was welcomed into the family with kindness and generosity. From that experience started the desire to try to do college and I was admitted! I am fulfilling a lifelong dream, I want to graduate in medicine. My choice was not easy, on the one hand I am realizing the dream of a lifetime. I study what I like, I have found exceptional people. On the other hand, I put my entire Italian life in a suitcase and left alone. I left my friends, family, and everything that made me feel safe. I had to deal with emotional difficulties alone. My parents were my strength, they helped me make my dream come true, always supported in every choice, but in moments of difficulty I was alone. As difficult as it was and in some moments it still is, it was also a great lesson. I learned to live my emotions, to feel them deeply. I learned to know myself better, to overcome difficulties by relying on myself. I have grown, matured, changed. I am convinced of the choice I made, I want to be a doctor, I want to graduate in the most avant-garde place in the world. As an international student, the road is difficult, expensive and uphill. But I want to do it. I want to make a difference. I want to help people heal, I want to be supportive. I want to know, study, search and do research so that everyone can have hope. The United States is my dream, it is my chance for growth, for life. I will be forever grateful to those who allowed me to leave and supported me economically and morally. In the United States I found a second family, new friends. I was welcomed and I felt at home. Now it's up to me to make real what until recently was a dream. I'm in my first year of Biology (premed) at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Then I will start my medical career. I hope to be able to work and support my studies, I hope to get scholarships, I want to be independent as soon as possible and give my best in my studies.

My family was affected by cancer 16 years ago. I was young, and it was my first experience with grief. My maternal grandmother was diagnosed with incurable, inoperable cancer. She passed away within a year. Even though I was little, I was very close to her. During those few summers we spent together, she took me to the beach. She took me to nursery school in the morning and picked me up in the afternoon. For me and my family, everything changed suddenly. An unexpected and cruel diagnosis, with no way out. For my father, there was a before and after, perhaps for all of us. The year we knew we had, we spent as much time together as possible. I saw my father cry and my mother comfort him. I was too young to understand, but I understood later. I understood when I was told that my grandmother had flown to heaven and become a star. I asked my mother, “But when will she come back from heaven?” Then, on the first night without her and on the following nights, I hid under her bed on her side. She was a grandmother, mother, and beautiful woman... beautiful, kind. We started living our lives again, I grew up, and unfortunately sometimes I feel like I don't remember her. This experience was painful for my family. It taught me not to waste time. We must enjoy every moment to the fullest and realize how happy we are in that moment. It made me realize that I want to be a doctor. I want to try to get to where you didn't get to. This experience was painful for my family. It taught me not to waste time. We must enjoy every moment to the fullest and realize how happy we are in that moment. It made me realize that I want to be a doctor. I want to try to get to where you didn't get to. I want to believe that sooner or later, with research and science, we can defeat it. I want to do it for her, I want to do it for my father. I want to do it for our future and for all those families who have lost someone. When these things happen, it is not just one person who is ill, but an entire family that suffers, that needs support, and that must not feel alone. A family that must have someone who believes that sooner or later we will beat it!

I am an Italian international student. In my life, I was a competitive gymnast for 10 years. I started in elementary school until the Covid period. After COVID, the gymnastics school I attended was closed and reopened in the following years. Artistic gymnastics has been my life. It taught me discipline, commitment, and respect. Competitive sports teach you when discipline and commitment are rewarded. Every race was an emotion, every fall teaches you how to get back up. The important thing was not how much I won but how much my results depended on me. He taught me respect and how to organize each day. I trained for four hours every day. I had to organize myself with school, homework, and tests. I remember coming back from a competition, I had a four or five-hour drive, and the next day I had a test. I studied the whole trip. I got an excellent grade. What I am today, I also owe to that period. Challenging but at the same time formative on a personal level. Today I am in the United States to fulfill my dream of becoming a doctor. That determination allowed me to leave my family, friends, and my world behind. I packed it all into a suitcase and came here to try. Even though it hasn't been easy, and it still isn't easy, I want to succeed. Living abroad alone, I am learning to take care of myself. Sometimes you feel lonely, you need your people but they are not close. I feel like a courageous woman. I am proud of myself and of the life project I am carrying forward. An economically important project, and even in this case, I would like to have as little impact as possible on my family. Getting a scholarship would be an important support. Who I am today is also thanks to sport. To the lessons you carry with you throughout your life. Sport shapes your character and prepares you for the future. It teaches you that you can get back up after falling off the beam, and that with training, perseverance, and determination, you will do better next time.

I arrived in the United States from Italy for the first time at 17, alone. I was hosted by a wonderful family who welcomed me immediately as one of their own. At the end of high school I decide to try to be admitted to a college, I MAKE IT! I want to try to achieve my dream of becoming a doctor and studying in the United States. Voglio comunque provare a realizzare il mio sogno. I still want to try to make my dream come true. Even this time I am welcomed by wonderful people, I have found friends who are like family.
