As I embark on my journey, I reflect on the desperation for stability, the determination to be different and make a difference, and the hope of being someone worth remembering—even if it’s just to one community.
Being the youngest of five siblings has always come with its pressures. None of my siblings completed college, and this reality fueled my determination to break the cycle and make my mom proud. From a young age, she supported my entrepreneurial dreams—buying me a sewing machine for my clothing business and hair products for my hair ventures. Her encouragement taught me that success starts with having someone believe in you.
When I was 11, my mom moved from Virginia to Georgia for a fresh start, leaving me and my siblings with my father. A year later, I decided to join her in Atlanta. It was an adventure—no family, no friends—just us starting over. I poured myself into school, determined to excel. I was hard on myself, disappointed with anything less than a B, and focused solely on academics.
Our story took a difficult turn when my mom was involved in an accident with a 16-wheeler truck. She suffered neck injuries, swelling in her knees, and numbness in her legs, leaving her unable to work for two years. This forced us into a challenging financial situation. I had to give up most of my extracurricular activities to help care for her, ensuring she was okay while attending regular chiropractic appointments. With no family in Georgia, it was just the two of us.
After moving to the south side of Atlanta, my relationship with school changed. The environment was unprofessional and lacked emotional support, leaving me drained. I no longer felt like the best, and I struggled to adapt. Instead of being defeated, I took it as an opportunity to figure out who I was. Though I made friends and enjoyed going out, I felt unsatisfied. I suggested business ideas to my friends—ways we could learn new skills and create something meaningful—but I quickly realized that journey was mine alone.
I regret not participating in many high school clubs and events because I used to love school, but I found joy in working and earning my own money for the life I wanted. This led me to decide to graduate early, focusing on building stability for my future, even if it meant sacrificing some of the typical high school experience.
Later, I began to act on the passions I inherited from my mother and sister, who were both involved in hair and fashion. My mom always made sure I had the tools I needed to create, from hair products to sewing supplies. While these creative outlets allowed me to express myself, they didn’t offer the long-term stability I craved. Recognizing my love for science, my mom encouraged me to explore careers in the field. This lead me to healthcare.
That’s the gentle version of my story, my journey has also been shaped by far more loss. Shortly after moving to Georgia, I lost my oldest sister, Asha, who always looked after me as if I were her own child. Asha was the glue of our family—positive, supportive, and deeply connected to her faith. Her love for fashion and hair lives on in me, but so does her legacy of kindness and resilience. Losing her left a void that shaped my perspective on life and success.
Initially, I struggled to adapt to my new environment. I encountered people facing toxic situations, mental health challenges, and survival struggles. I, too, found myself caught in toxic cycles, needing help to navigate through them. By 10th grade, I felt overwhelmed, juggling hobbies, academic pressures, and the desire to help everyone around me. I went into panic mode, desperately trying to figure out the fastest way to achieve stability and help myself and others.
Through it all, my mom reminded me of the importance of patience. She taught me that success doesn’t come from rushing but from steady, intentional steps. With her guidance, I learned to focus on one goal at a time while cherishing my creative outlets.
This realization helped me develop interpersonal skills and a deep understanding of how to connect with and uplift others. Though I still pursue my hobbies, I’ve learned to dedicate myself to one passion and enjoy the journey as it unfolds. Losing so much taught me that life is short, and I believe in making the most of every moment.
As my economics teacher once said, “Time is our scariest resource.” With this in mind, I’m ready to begin my next chapter, using my time wisely to create a life of stability, purpose, and impact.

Growing up, faith was always a cornerstone of my family’s life. My grandma was a reverend so we were always in church attending bible study or getting baptized. However, it wasn’t until I faced some of the most challenging moments in my life that I truly understood the power of relying on God for strength. My sister, Asha, who was deeply devoted to her faith, had an undeniable influence on me. She was a constant source of encouragement, and her unshakable belief in God taught me the importance of trusting in Him, especially during times of hardship. Asha’s faith was so powerful that every day at 11:11 a.m. and p.m., we would stop whatever we were doing and pray together, believing that God would hear our prayers and guide us. These moments of prayer gave me a sense of peace and connection to God, even when life felt overwhelming.
When I moved from Virginia to Georgia, I left behind my family and everything familiar. The transition was difficult, but me and my mother were determined to start fresh. However, shortly after the move, I lost my oldest sister, Asha, and this was a blow that I was not prepared for. Asha had been the heart of our family, a role model who exemplified kindness, love, and a strong belief in God’s plan for us. Her passing left a void that was impossible to fill, and the grief was suffocating. My mother and I were left in a deep state of sadness and confusion, but it was during this time that my faith truly began to carry me.
Despite the grief and loss, I found strength in the prayers we had shared with Asha, and I held onto the belief that God was with us, guiding us through the tough times. I remembered the times when my sister would pray with such conviction, trusting that God would provide what we needed. Those memories of 11:11 prayer sessions became a lifeline for me. To remind myself of her and our tradition, I got it tattooed on me when I was young and even though I was still a kid I’ve never regretted it to this day. These simple prayers became a reminder that I wasn’t alone, that God was with me and my mother, and that we could find comfort in Him.
When my mother was injured in a severe accident shortly after Asha’s death, I felt the weight of the world on my shoulders. I had to step up and take on responsibilities far beyond my years, including caring for my mother as she recovered. There were moments when I felt like I couldn’t handle it, when the weight of everything seemed unbearable. Though I would remind myself of the importance of trusting in God’s plan, even when things felt unquestionable.
There was a particular moment when I was at my lowest, feeling overwhelmed by the challenges in front of me, and I was ready to give up on life but then I took a moment to pray. I told God if it was time to take me then I’m ready, if not may I become someone with a purpose, and he gave me mine.

As a non-traditional student, my path to higher education has been shaped by unique challenges and experiences that have profoundly influenced my journey. At 11 years old, my mother and I made the difficult decision to leave Virginia and move to Georgia, leaving the rest of my family behind. This transition was just the beginning of a series of events that tested my strength and mentality. Shortly after we moved, I lost my oldest sister, Asha, to illness, which left my mother and me in a state of deep grief. My sister had been the glue that held our family together, and her loss created a void that was hard to fill.
In the midst of these personal struggles, I found myself shouldering responsibilities that would typically fall on an older sibling or an adult. As a first-generation college student, I didn’t have the luxury of a traditional high school experience. While many of my peers were focused on extracurricular activities and socializing, I was working part-time to support my family. My mother was involved in a severe accident that left her unable to work for two years, during which time I became her primary caregiver. I attended to her needs while also juggling schoolwork and helping to stabilize our financial situation. These experiences were pivotal in shaping my perspective on education and success.
Rather than following the traditional route of participating in a wide array of high school activities, I chose to focus on my family and my future. My high school years were spent balancing academics with part-time jobs, all while trying to preserve my emotional well-being. My mother’s encouragement to pursue my dreams kept me motivated, even when it felt like I was sacrificing too much. I eventually made the difficult decision to graduate early, choosing to forgo some of the typical high school experiences in order to focus on building a stable future for myself and my family.
These sacrifices have instilled in me a deeper understanding of what education means—it’s not just about grades or titles but about purpose and impact. Through all the challenges I faced, I realized that my true passion lies in healthcare. Growing up, I had the opportunity to assist my stepmother, a CNA, in caring for elderly patients. The compassion I felt while helping others ignited my interest in the medical field. Further inspiration came when I shadowed my uncle, an anesthesiologist, which solidified my decision to pursue a career in anesthesiology.
This scholarship represents an opportunity to finally dedicate myself fully to my studies and future career without the overwhelming burden of financial stress. It will allow me to attend college full-time and focus on my academic and professional goals without needing to work multiple jobs just to make ends meet. By easing the financial pressures, this scholarship will allow me to invest my time in my education, ensuring I can pursue my dream of becoming an anesthesiologist and making a meaningful contribution to healthcare.
Moreover, this scholarship will empower me to break the cycle of limited opportunities within my family. My story is one of hard work and determination to create a better life. As the first in my family to attend college, I aspire to be a role model and inspire others in my community to believe in their potential, no matter their circumstances. This scholarship will help me not only achieve my goals but also continue my mission to make a lasting, positive impact on the world around me.

As I embark on my journey to higher education, I reflect on the experiences that have shaped my life, including the challenges I’ve faced and the determination that has kept me moving forward. Being the youngest of five siblings, none of whom completed college, has always weighed on me. It fueled my desire to break the cycle and make my mother proud, especially since she was always my biggest supporter. She encouraged my entrepreneurial dreams by buying me a sewing machine for my clothing business and hair products for my hair ventures, teaching me that success begins with someone who believes in you.
When I was 11, my mom moved from Virginia to Georgia for a fresh start, leaving me and my siblings with my father. A year later, I joined her, and together we started anew in Atlanta. It was a big change—no family or friends, just the two of us trying to build a new life. I threw myself into school, pushing myself to excel and maintain high grades, holding myself to standards of success.
But everything changed when my mom was involved in an accident with a 16-wheeler truck. The injuries she sustained left her unable to work for two years, forcing us into a difficult financial situation. I had to step up to help care for her while attending regular medical appointments, which meant sacrificing my extracurricular activities and personal time. With no extended family around, it was just the two of us facing these challenges together.
After moving to the south side of Atlanta, my school environment lacked support and left me feeling drained. I struggled to find my place and no longer felt like I was excelling. Instead of letting this defeat me, I saw it as an opportunity to reflect on who I was and what I wanted for my future. I realized that my true passion lay in entrepreneurship and helping others, even though that journey was mine alone. I also began to focus on my long-term goals, and with my mom’s guidance, I decided to graduate early and dedicate myself to building the stability I desired for my future.
My mom encouraged me to pursue my love for science, which eventually led me to healthcare. Growing up, I watched my stepmother work as a CNA, and I often assisted her with caring for elderly patients. My grandfather’s struggles with knee surgery and long-term care also motivated me to want to help others in similar situations. I began to explore a career in anesthesiology, a field that my uncle, an anesthesiologist, introduced me to. Shadowing him, I realized that anesthesiology offered more than just financial stability—it allowed me to be a dependable presence during people’s most vulnerable moments, while also rekindling my love for learning.
Throughout all these challenges, I’ve also faced the loss of my oldest sister, Asha. She had always looked after me, and her positive, faith-driven influence left a deep void in my life. Asha’s resilience, kindness, and unwavering faith continue to inspire me. Losing her changed my perspective on life, teaching me that even in times of loss, there is strength to be found in continuing forward.
My journey has been shaped by personal challenges, from the loss of my sister to the responsibility of caring for my mom, but each experience has driven me to become the person I am today. With patience and guidance from my mom, I’ve learned to focus on one goal at a time, and I am now ready to take the next step toward creating a life of stability, purpose, and impact.

After moving to Georgia, I lost my oldest sister, Asha, who always looked over me as if I were her own, and soon after, my life became a confusing ball of judgment. My sister was so positive, supportive, and always up to date. She always had the lasted hair trends and fashion styles, which, of course, is a trait you can tell I got from her and my mother. Asha loved doing good for herself, God, and the people around her; she was the glue to my family. I truly live up to being a good woman like her.
Initially, after the move, I struggled to find friends who couldn’t help themselves from toxic situations and mental and physical problems. Then, I started adapting to those same situations, finding myself needing help from those same toxic endeavors. You know the story of how I fell out of love with school and how I found my career, but you don’t know that I had a mental breakdown while on that journey after losing my sister. At school, I started meeting all kinds of different people I wasn’t used to. It. It seemed like everyone had so many problems; the kids were drowning mentally, making them do things that they never wanted to do, but they just wanted to survive or be heard. Then the adults were as clueless as a newborn, trying to provide what they think is best for kids but never really getting to fully understand what they need. However, I also see the adults struggling while learning to understand how to fix situations that they struggled with themselves.
When I fell out of love with school, I maintained my grades, but I was struggling so badly with finding out who I wanted to be and what I wanted to do. Doing all these different hobbies at the same time, I figured that I couldn’t manage to do others' hair, make clothing, and help the people I was around. I went into panic mode starting around my 10th grade year, trying to figure out which career I should stick to, how I could help myself and everyone else around me, and the fastest way I could just get it done so I could be done. With the help of my loving mother, though, I quickly remembered that I never wanted to be the person with those struggles; I just wanted the stable life she always tried to provide me with. She taught me that I could do anything I wanted but don’t ever rush success. Down the line, I learned interpersonal skills and how to connect and communicate with others so I could help them better help themselves. Overall, I still do all of my hobbies, but I learned to dedicate myself to one and just enjoy that achievement as it comes. Losing everything makes you realize life is short, and I believe in making the most of every moment. As my Econ teacher taught me, “Time is our scariest resource," and I'm ready to begin MY next chapter.

If I could do anything with my life, I would compare my entrepreneurial pursuit with my interest in science to innovate in the healthcare field. Specifically, I imagine becoming an anesthesiologist, a profession introduced to me by my uncle. This role excites me because it combines the intellectual challenge of medicine with the opportunity to make a direct, positive impact on lives. I envision using my skills and knowledge to improve patient care and customer service for everyone! These skills then allow me opportunities to improve healthcare access in underserved communities.
STEM excites me because it demonstrates how our brain solves problems and how equations affect our lives. The understanding and knowledge to manipulate the principles that guide our world to create new technologies and solutions is incredibly inspiring. My favorite subject has always been science, as it challenges me to think critically and creatively about complex issues such as the human body.
A job in information technology (IT) would allow me to integrate my knowledge with the power of technology to solve real-world problems. It is a field that constantly offers endless opportunities to learn and grow. I know I could make a positive impact by enforcing science and math to improve healthcare delivery and accessibility. For instance, dedicating myself to understanding the science behind how the body reacts and how it receives information, along with the medical contribution, will enhance the knowledge of human biology and could promote patient care, reduce errors, and facilitate better health outcome strategies.

The greatest challenge I faced was moving to Atlanta at the age of 12 with my mom, leaving behind my familiar environment and friends. This transition was daunting, as I lost my oldest sister in the same year. Initially, I struggled to find stability and adapt to the new environment, which impacted my academic performance and emotional well-being.
To overcome this challenge, I focused on my long-term goals and the values instilled in me by my mom. I dedicated myself to my studies, ensuring that my grades remained strong despite the difficulties. Simultaneously, I explored interests in fashion and hair, which was inspired by my sisters creativity when it came to trends. The dedication to stability drove a creative outlet and a sense of accomplishment. Over time, I built new friendships and developed resilience, learning to thrive in adversity along with diversity.
My mom's unwavering support was crucial during this period. She constantly reminded me that success doesn't come overnight and that every challenge is an opportunity for growth. This perspective helped me stay motivated and optimistic. Ultimately, this experience taught me the importance of perseverance, adaptability, and self-reliance. As the youngest of five siblings and the first to pursue college, my journey has been one of perseverance and ambition. Growing up, I watched my mom work tirelessly to provide for us, instilling in me a strong work ethic and determination to succeed. Her support for my entrepreneurial ventures in fashion and hair showed me the power of pursuing all my passions. This foundation motivates me to dedicate myself as I create my path to success, not just for myself but for my family and community.
