My ambition to be involved in the field of dentistry commenced in my high school, while I was volunteering for a dental health mobile clinic in the suburbs of Kathmandu, Nepal. Little did I know that this experience would change my entire understand of oral health.
With tremendous hard work, I was able to get into one of top ranked schools in Nepal. In all those years spent in my school, nothing had appealed to me more than talking to people and developing rapport, educating them on different subjects, counselling them on their health issues, and providing them psychological relief which is similar to relation of dental hygiene profession with the patient.
During my school, Nepal was hit my massive earthquake on 2015. About more than 10,000 people were killed, many thousands more were injured, and more than 600,000 structures was damaged. With constant aftershocks and trauma, we did not have access to basic healthcare, so me and my friends decided to participate coincidentally in free dental camps and mental health awareness camp. We also realized what human being are potential of, how individual resilience is developed when faced with adversity.
This experience was emotionally rewarding as well, as the same victims changed physically, mentally and emotionally at that point.
During peak of corona virus pandemic, i was doing observer ship, I realized its importance more as oral health of people was degrading at a more rapid level, since the scaling was avoided due to risk of transmission. After following the recommended guidelines during COVID-19, the protective measures were undertaken in a dental setting , where i was in an observer ship and I was able to assist the patient with no transmission of corona virus. This was a huge success for us emotionally as we were taking a first step to normalcy and i also realized i can take risk when it comes to service to mankind.
With the aim of understanding dentistry in the USA, I joined the heartland dental group here last year in Saint louis as a dental assistant. I experienced the differences in dental practice from my home country, and realized how dental hygienist in the USA played a central role in dental care. Most of the instruments and techniques were completely new, advanced and different than the ones than the ones I had used back home. These facts made me curious and instantly drew my attention towards joining the dental hygiene program in the USA.
With the dental hygiene degree from MCPHS university in Worcester i will be proud to be part of the Forsyth dental hygiene clinic, its rich history and reputation and to be able to work on root cause of oral disease. With the scholarship i can apply the fund to cover the fee of the patient and treat them for free during my student years in dental hygiene school .
