I was eight years old when I was informed about my grandmother’s diagnosis of skin cancer. Behind the doctor’s door, I was hiding from my cousin when I heard him say “It’s going to be ok, just go to chemotherapy, and you will stay alive.” At that age, I couldn't understand the solemnity of cancer; however, I somehow knew that news was unappealing to my grandma. When the physician emphasized the word “alive,” I noticed a glance of despair on her face. I wanted to help her, but I couldn’t. And although my grandmother listened to the physician and underwent chemo, she was too weak to fight the disease. She passed away only after six months. Her death was excruciating, but I knew she would have wanted me to be strong. I grieved and decided to pursue a career in the medical field to research cures for people dealing with cancer like my grandmother was. At an early age, I was fascinated with science and math; I recalled asking my teacher about the function of the digestive system in 1st grade. But although I was enthusiastic about those subjects, I could not determine which career path I wanted to pursue. Once I found out about my grandmother’s conditions, I realized my calling was for science. I started taking chemistry and biology in middle school. Though, I had to overcome a language barrier in high school; my career path did not change. I even participated in the HOSA club (Health Occupations Students of America), from which I received my certified medical assistant certification. During my last year of high school, I was more captivated by chemistry than any other science. My teacher style of teaching intrigued me to major in chemistry; I was dedicated to learning that subject in-depth. Also, I realized with that major, I would be able to finish all my prerequisite courses for medical school, as well as having a variety of researches experiences that could help me accomplish my goal to find the cure for cancer. In pursuit of a career in chemistry, I enrolled and was admitted at the Honors program @ Miami Dade College. This two-year program offers high achieving opportunities for students to dive into their studies. Since the Honors College is a two-year program, I intend to continue with my bachelor degree at FSU in the fall of 2022. In that university, I would be able to find variety of opportunities such as research and study abroad programs to assist me in achieving my goal.
