Ever since I was young, I have been fascinated by how things work, especially cars. I would watch my father diagnose and repair vehicles, impressed by his ability to bring an engine back to life. This passion has driven me to pursue an associate degree in Automotive Technology with the goal of becoming a skilled automotive mechanic. My ultimate ambition is to own my own automotive repair shop, where I can provide excellent service to my community and build a business that reflects my dedication and hard work. Throughout my life, I have learned the value of perseverance, teamwork, and responsibility. As a student-athlete, I have balanced academics with my passion for sports. I was honored to be named MVP swimmer for the 2023-2024 season, an achievement that reflects my dedication to improving and pushing myself beyond limits. Additionally, my teamwork skills were put to the test when I competed in the Queen Liliuokalani Canoe Race, where my team and I secured first place in 2023-2024. In swimming, I placed fourth in both of my events, demonstrating my commitment to continuous improvement and striving for excellence. Being the second youngest of five siblings has also played a significant role in shaping who I am today. Growing up in a large family has taught me the importance of support, teamwork, and communication. I have always done well in school, maintaining A’s and B’s throughout my academic career. This consistency in my education has stemmed from my strong work ethic, which I have developed by setting goals and following through on them. I have learned that success requires discipline and determination, values that will help me thrive in both my education and future career. However, my journey has not been without challenges. Over the past two to three years, my father has been dealing with severe medical issues, including a fungal infection that has kept him in and out of the hospital. This situation has placed a significant amount of responsibility on me and my family. While it has been difficult to watch my father struggle with his health, this experience has also taught me the importance of staying calm under pressure and stepping up when needed. I have taken on many of his responsibilities, such as preparing dinner for my family and maintaining the household by cleaning the yard and assisting with chores. These responsibilities have instilled in me a sense of independence, leadership, and accountability—qualities that I will carry into my career as an automotive mechanic and, eventually, as a business owner. Despite these challenges, I have never lost sight of my goals. My passion for automotive technology continues to grow as I learn more about the mechanics and engineering behind vehicles. I am excited to expand my knowledge through my associate degree program, where I will gain hands-on experience and the technical skills necessary to excel in the industry. I look forward to the opportunity to work in an environment that challenges me to think critically and problem-solve, whether it be diagnosing an engine failure or perfecting the performance of a vehicle. Beyond my technical aspirations, I want to make a difference in my community by providing honest and reliable automotive services. I understand the importance of having a trustworthy mechanic, especially for those who rely on their vehicles for daily commutes and family responsibilities. My goal is to establish a shop where customers feel confident in the service they receive, knowing that their vehicles are in capable hands. Receiving this scholarship would be a tremendous help in achieving my goals. It would alleviate some of the financial burden of pursuing my education, allowing me to focus on my studies and hands-on training. More importantly, it would bring me one step closer to turning my dreams into reality. With this opportunity, I will be able to gain the necessary skills and experience to excel in the automotive industry, provide for my family, and eventually build a business that reflects my dedication and hard work. Life has taught me that challenges and setbacks do not define a person; rather, how one responds to them does. I have faced difficulties, but I have remained resilient and determined to push forward. Whether it is in the pool, on the racecourse, or in my personal life, I have learned that hard work, discipline, and a strong support system can help me overcome any obstacle. I am eager to apply these lessons to my education and career, ensuring that I make the most of every opportunity that comes my way. In conclusion, my passion for automotive technology, my strong academic record, and my life experiences have prepared me for success in this field. I am committed to working hard, learning as much as I can, and eventually creating a business that not only provides high-quality automotive services but also gives back to the community. This scholarship would be an invaluable step in my journey, allowing me to continue my education and work toward a future that I am proud of. I am grateful for this opportunity and hopeful for what lies ahead.

Being Asian has always been an important part of my identity, shaping my experiences, values, and connections with my family. My Chinese background, in particular, has had a strong influence on my life, especially through the traditions passed down from my grandparents on my dad’s side. Their cultural influence has given me a deep appreciation for my heritage, from the way we celebrate special occasions to the foods we eat and the beliefs we hold. One of the most meaningful traditions in my family has always been celebrating Chinese New Year. This holiday is more than just a time of festivities—it is a moment to honor our ancestors, strengthen family bonds, and welcome prosperity for the new year. Every year, we would gather as a family, sharing meals filled with symbolic dishes meant to bring good luck, health, and happiness. Red envelopes, or hóngbāo, were given out, symbolizing good fortune, and we would take part in traditions that have been passed down for generations. The Chinese zodiac was another important part of our celebrations, with each year carrying its own meaning and significance. Learning about the different zodiac signs and their characteristics gave me a sense of connection to my ancestors and their beliefs. Food has also played a huge role in shaping my appreciation for my culture. Growing up, I was surrounded by the flavors of Chinese and other Asian-style dishes. From dumplings to noodle soups and stir-fries, food was not just something to eat but an expression of our culture and history. Cooking and eating together became a way for my family to bond, and through these meals, I felt connected to my Chinese roots. Even now, food continues to be a way for me to celebrate my heritage, whether it is by sharing traditional dishes with friends or exploring new flavors inspired by my background. One of the most personal ways I have embraced my heritage is through my dragon tattoo. In Chinese culture, dragons are powerful symbols of strength, wisdom, and protection. For my family, the dragon was seen as a protector, watching over us and guiding us. This belief is so deeply rooted in our family that all of my siblings and my dad have a symbolic dragon tattooed on their bodies as well. Each dragon is unique, representing something special to the individual who carries it. For me, having a dragon on my arm is my way of carrying that protection and symbolism with me wherever I go. It is not just a design; it is a representation of my connection to my ancestors and the values they passed down to me. This deep-rooted appreciation for my culture has also influenced my desire to pursue higher education. Education has always been highly valued in my family, seen as a pathway to opportunity and success. My grandparents worked tirelessly to build a better future for the next generation, and my parents instilled in me the belief that knowledge is one of the most powerful tools a person can have. For me, pursuing higher education is not just about career prospects—it is about honoring the sacrifices my family has made and using my education to make a meaningful impact. I want to continue learning, growing, and developing skills that will allow me to give back to my community and inspire others to embrace their own identities. My cultural heritage has given me strength and purpose, and I hope that through higher education, I can carry forward those values and contribute to something greater than myself.

My interest has only deepened through working with my dad, where I’ve gained practical skills and an appreciation for the importance of staying up-to-date with technological advances in the automotive industry. In pursuing a degree in automotive technology, I am preparing myself to enter a field where I can make an immediate and lasting impact. With a solid foundation in diagnostic skills, repair techniques, and customer service, I aim to become a skilled auto mechanic who can offer reliable solutions to everyday drivers. Beyond simply fixing cars, I see my work as a way to contribute to people’s lives by ensuring that they can travel safely and efficiently. My goal is not just to be a technician, but to lead by example in my community and the broader automotive industry. I want to help others understand the value of auto mechanics as a profession and encourage future generations to pursue careers in automotive technology. In the short term, I plan to gain hands-on experience working with advanced diagnostic equipment and expanding my knowledge of repairing and maintaining a variety of vehicles. In the long run, I hope to open my own repair shop, focusing on sustainable practices and cutting-edge technologies. I aim to create an inclusive space where individuals of all backgrounds feel welcome to learn about and work on vehicles, fostering a community of innovation and expertise. At the heart of my career goals is a commitment to making a difference. Through integrity, dedication, and a passion for problem-solving, I plan to use my skills to improve the lives of others. It was this curiosity that led me to pursue a career in the automotive industry, where I aim to combine my hands-on skills with my passion for problem-solving. My journey toward becoming an auto mechanic and studying automotive technology has been shaped by my life experiences, and I am eager to make a meaningful impact in the world through this field. Growing up in Hawaii, I was exposed to many long drives, living on mountains the only way to get around was with a car. I have spent many hours inside of a car. From the time I was little I have watched and helped my father, who was a mechanic, prior to becoming disabled, work on cars. Fascinated by the process of diagnosing issues and making repairs. Whether it was fixing a flat tire or swapping out some brake pads, these hands-on tasks ignited my interest in mechanics. I began experimenting with my own small projects, tinkering with machines and cars to better understand their mechanics. This curiosity soon became a passion that would shape my future. When I first learned about automotive technology, I was immediately drawn to the complexity and precision required in the field. The idea of diagnosing problems and making repairs that directly impact people’s safety and mobility is what excites me most about being an auto mechanic. As I’ve explored the world of automotive repair, I’ve found myself eager to dive deeper into the science behind modern vehicles—everything from engine performance to electrical systems. Whether it’s through providing reliable, sustainable repairs or mentoring aspiring mechanics, I am committed to contributing to the betterment of the automotive industry and society as a whole. As I continue my journey in automotive technology, I am excited about the future and the opportunities that lie ahead to create a positive impact in the world.
