Mike Wazocha Memorial Scholarship Essay
Slater Warren | Mesa Ridge High School | Fountain, CO
Growing up as the only child in a military family, I learned early on that hard work, integrity, and discipline weren’t optional, they were expectations. My father, grandfather, and uncle all served in the U.S. Army with strong backgrounds in STEM, and their example shaped how I approach every challenge in life. From the football field, where I earned All-American honors, to the classroom, where I’ve maintained high academic standing, I’ve always carried the belief that nothing worth achieving comes easy.
That mindset is exactly why I’ve chosen to pursue a degree in construction management.
Construction isn’t just about pouring concrete or reading blueprints. It’s about bringing people together to build something that lasts, schools, homes, hospitals, community centers. I’m not naive to the challenges that come with it: red tape, project delays, and tough conditions are part of the job. But those obstacles don’t scare me. If anything, they motivate me. I see construction as a career where I can directly impact communities in a positive and lasting way, not just through buildings, but through honest, transparent work that people can count on.
My decision to enter this field isn’t random, it’s rooted in who I am. I’ve always felt a strong sense of responsibility to contribute to something bigger than myself. As a leader on my football team and in my school, I’ve learned the importance of discipline, communication, and perseverance. These are the same qualities that drive successful construction projects, and I plan to carry them into my future career.
What excites me most about construction management is the ability to take an idea and turn it into reality, to literally build the future. I want to be the kind of project manager who does things the right way, not just the fastest or cheapest, but with purpose, honesty, and respect for everyone involved. I want my work to stand as a reflection of my values, and to show that it’s possible to succeed without cutting corners.
Receiving the Mike Wazocha Memorial Scholarship would mean more than financial support, it would be a vote of confidence in my ability to lead, build, and serve. I’m ready to put in the work, face the obstacles, and earn every opportunity that comes my way.
Thank you for considering me.

One thing I’d like to improve about myself is patience. As an only child with a strong work ethic and discipline shaped by high academics and All-American football honors, I tend to push hard for quick results. But through challenges, and lessons from my father, grandfather, and uncle, all Army veterans, I’ve learned that growth takes time. I’ve come to know UNC through football recruiting camps, and I’m excited to potentially transfer as a student-athlete. With a career goal in construction management, I’m learning to lead with purpose, integrity, and the patience to build lasting change in communities.

Slater Warren – Mesa Ridge High School, Fountain, CO
Being raised in a household shaped by military service means I was taught discipline, integrity, and strength from a young age. My father, grandfather, uncle, and two of my cousins, call U.S. Army veterans with STEM backgrounds, modeled hard work and sacrifice. But behind the uniform and structure, there were deeper battles being fought. The emotional scars of war don’t always fade when the uniform comes off.
As an only child, I often felt the weight of those wounds. Family members I love, and respect carried burdens from their time in service, burdens that sometimes-made home life unpredictable, and very lonely. The effects of PTSD, as well as multiple other mental health concerns, and the emotional toll of service shaped our household dynamic. There were days when I had to navigate conversations carefully, manage my own emotions, and stay focused in school, all while dealing with the tension that comes from being around emotionally dysregulated loved ones. It wasn’t their fault, but the environment often left me feeling like I was walking a path alone. My mother helped to guide me in navigating this. Her love and compassion for those with mental health illnesses, helped me to see others differently, without the judgement that they did not deserve.
I realized early that I couldn’t wait for perfect circumstances to chase my goals. I had to become my own source of motivation, setting my standards and holding myself accountable. That mindset helped me excel academically and earn All-American honors in football. Even when things at home felt overwhelming, I learned how to compartmentalize, to stay disciplined, and to keep showing up for my future. I developed a strong work ethic because I knew success wouldn’t be handed to me, I would have to earn every bit of it.
These challenges didn’t break me, they built me. They gave me the drive to pursue a career in construction management, where I hope to create environments that provide safety, stability, and progress for others. I want to bring honest, ethical work into communities that need it most. I’ve seen what happens when systems break down, and I want to be part of building something that lasts.
I’m not naive to think the path ahead will be easy. Construction, like life, is full of red tape, setbacks, and unexpected challenges. But I’ve faced storms before, and I know how to keep moving forward, solo, if I have to. My family’s legacy gave me strength, and the struggles gave me purpose. With this scholarship, I’ll continue the work of building a future where obstacles don’t stop progress, they shape it.
Richard (Dunk) Matthews II Scholarship
My name is Slater Warren, and I am proud to be pursuing a career in construction management. As the only child in a family with a proud tradition of U.S. Army service and STEM excellence, I’ve grown up with discipline, integrity, and a deep appreciation for hard work. My father, grandfather, uncles and cousins, all Army veterans with careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, instilled in me the values of service, precision, and resilience. These values have shaped not only how I approach my goals, but also how I plan to give back.
I am not naive to believe that things in life come easy. I've learned that obstacles, hard work, and navigating bureaucratic red tape are inevitable, especially in the trades. But I don’t shy away from challenges, I lean into them. Football taught me this lesson early. Being named an All-American athlete wasn’t just about performance on the field, it reflected years of discipline, mental toughness, and academic achievement. That same drive now fuels my pursuit of construction management, a trade that allows me to blend leadership, strategy, and hands-on problem-solving.
Construction is more than just building structures, it’s about building trust, opportunity, and stability in communities. I’ve chosen this path because I want to create real, tangible change. My goal is to lead projects with honesty, transparency, and a strong ethical foundation, values that are often overlooked in the fast-paced, profit-driven side of the industry. By prioritizing quality and community needs, I believe I can be a new kind of builder, one who creates spaces that people are proud to call home, work, or gather in.
Mastering the trade of construction won’t come easy, but I am committed to learning every facet of the profession. In so doing I know that opportunities and more ways to support and help communities will be shown to me. From acquiring technical knowledge to understanding local codes and sustainable practices, I will approach my training with the same determination that earned me academic and athletic honors. Eventually, I plan to return to underserved areas, whether rural towns or urban neighborhoods, and lead projects that uplift, employ, and empower the people who live there.
This scholarship is more than financial help, it's a vote of confidence in a future built not just with bricks and beams, but with purpose and heart. I’m ready to get to work. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Charles Reid Imperial Scholarship
I am not naive enough to believe that anything in life comes easy. I’ve seen firsthand how hard work, obstacles, and bureaucratic red tape are not the exceptions, they’re the norm. But I also believe that through dedication, discipline, and purpose, anything is possible. That belief has shaped my decision to pursue a career in construction management, a trade that blends hands-on skills with leadership and community service.
Coming from a family rooted in both service and STEM, I’ve learned the value of precision, ethics, and resilience. My father, grandfather, and uncle all served in the U.S. Army and used their technical training to build lasting contributions, whether through engineering, logistics, or infrastructure. That legacy of service runs deep in me. As an only child, I’ve grown up with a strong sense of responsibility, which I now channel into my education and trade ambitions.
While I had the academic merit and athletic accolades, including an All-American football selection, to pursue a four-year college degree, I felt drawn to something more tangible and community focused. Construction management is more than just overseeing projects. It’s about shaping the physical and economic foundations of a community with honesty, transparency, and respect. I want to help build neighborhoods where people feel safe, schools where students can thrive, and infrastructure that truly serves the people it’s meant for.
The trades often come with misconceptions, that they’re fallback options or lack intellectual rigor. But I know that choosing a trade doesn’t mean choosing an easier path. I expect challenges: navigating regulations, managing diverse teams, and ensuring safety and quality on every site. But my background in high-level academics and athletics has taught me to approach every hurdle with discipline and grit. Whether I’m breaking down a defensive line or a construction blueprint, I stay focused, adaptable, and committed to the goal.
I plan to use my skills to create sustainable, inclusive developments, particularly in under-resourced communities. I want my projects to be symbols of integrity and pride, places that uplift people and reflect the best of what the trades can offer. My long-term vision includes mentoring young people interested in the trades, especially those who may not see college as their only option. Everyone deserves the chance to build a future, and I intend to make that path more visible and accessible.
I am ready to put in the work, face the challenges, and make a lasting impact. This isn’t just a career, it’s a calling.
Mark Caldwell Memorial STEM/STEAM Scholarship
Pushing Past Pressure: Building My Legacy Through STEM and Service
I’ve carried a weight heavier than most could see—a constant pressure to prove my worth, not just to others, but to myself. As an only child from a family of U.S. Army veterans with strong STEM backgrounds—my father, grandfather, and uncle—I felt a silent expectation to continue a legacy of discipline, excellence, and service. But instead of letting that pressure crush me, I used it as the foundation to build something greater.
I’ve always been deeply aware of the sacrifices made before me. My family's background in STEM and military service inspired me to pursue a path of impact and responsibility. But with that inspiration came the internal struggle of living up to their example. I wasn’t just chasing success—I was chasing significance, and that pursuit came with immense self-imposed pressure to be great at everything I did. The drive to "out-prove" myself was constant, and the expectations I created in my own mind became my greatest hardship.
This pressure fueled me to excel in both the classroom and on the field. I maintained a strong academic record through advanced coursework, and through unwavering discipline, I was honored as an All-American in football. Balancing the two taught me time management, grit, and how to push past mental and physical limits. These experiences helped me realize that success isn’t just about personal achievement—it’s about how you use your skills to contribute to something larger than yourself.
My passion for building and leading drew me toward construction management—a field where engineering, project planning, and leadership come together to shape communities. I’ve volunteered at football camps, mentoring younger players and giving back to the community that shaped me. I’ve seen how a well-built facility, a safe home, or even a renovated field can change lives. That’s the impact I want to make: using my STEM education to improve real people’s lives in tangible ways.
To overcome the pressure and anxiety that once held me back, I leaned into mindfulness, goal-setting, and the values passed down from my military family—integrity, hard work, and service. Most importantly, I held onto a deep belief that I could make a difference.
Today, I don’t run from the pressure—I use it as fuel. I’ve turned it into purpose. With support from this scholarship, I will continue building a legacy that merges STEM, service, and compassion for the communities that need it most.

It creates a persistent sense of unsafety, making it difficult to express myself authentically, take normal risks, or even engage in everyday interactions, like ordering coffee from a barista. However, while anxiety has often attempted to hold me back, it has also deepened my passion and compassion for my community. It has forced me to develop resilience, and through that resilience, I have grown into a person who refuses to let fear dictate my future.
As an only child, I have always felt the weight of expectations, both internal and external. I have carried the pressure to succeed, to be strong, and to set a high standard for myself. At times, anxiety has made this pressure feel overwhelming, amplifying self-doubt and making me hesitant to embrace new opportunities. But I have never let it define me. Instead, I have leaned on my strong will and belief in my ability to make a difference. My dedication to academic excellence and my achievements in football, including being an All-American selection, are proof of my perseverance and work ethic. These accomplishments did not come easily—I had to push through self-doubt, step outside of my comfort zone, and channel my energy into discipline and growth.
Throughout my journey, my mother, who is a therapist, has played a crucial role in helping me navigate my anxiety. She has taught me coping skills that allow me to manage my fears and has instilled confidence in me, reminding me that I am capable and strong. Her guidance has been invaluable in shaping my resilience and determination to move forward despite my struggles.

One of the most impactful aspects of this event was seeing the pride that radiated from every participant. From school bands playing their hearts out to cheerleaders hyping up the crowd, everyone was part of something greater than themselves. It was a moment where differences in background, culture, and personal challenges were set aside in favor of collective celebration. This reinforced my deep passion for community and my commitment to fostering connections among people.
Looking forward, I hope to see even greater positive change stemming from events like the Widefield Parade. Specifically, I would love to see more initiatives that bring the community together year-round, not just during special events. Whether through mentorship programs, community service projects, or local business sponsorships, there are many opportunities to extend the spirit of unity fostered by the parade into everyday life. Additionally, I hope to see increased involvement from students who may not typically participate in such events. Sometimes, all it takes is one experience like this to ignite a passion for community involvement and personal growth.
As I pursue a career in construction management at CSU-Pueblo, I hope to carry this spirit of unity and dedication with me. My goal is to contribute to infrastructure projects that enhance our community and create lasting spaces where people can come together. The Widefield Parade reminded me that even the simplest gatherings can have profound impacts, and I am committed to being a force for positive change wherever I go. Through hard work, strong ethics, and a deep love for my community, I will continue striving to make a meaningful difference.

Building Strength: Supporting Mental Health Through Leadership and Compassion
From a young age, I witnessed firsthand the impact of mental health challenges through my mother’s work in the field (she is mental health therapist). Seeing individuals struggle yet persevere instilled in me a deep passion for helping others navigate their own mental well-being. My journey as an athlete, mentor, and student has reinforced my belief that emotional support is just as critical as physical strength.
Through football, I learned the value of discipline, resilience, and teamwork—qualities that extend far beyond the field. Being named an All-American required immense dedication, but the real reward came from mentoring younger athletes and peers. Whether volunteering at camps or offering guidance to teammates battling self-doubt and anxiety, I have always prioritized emotional support. Many young athletes struggle with the pressure to succeed, and I’ve made it my mission to remind them that their worth extends beyond wins and losses.
Academically, I have upheld strong ethics and discipline, excelling in my studies while balancing rigorous training. My commitment to excellence is not just personal; it serves as an example for those who look up to me. As I pursue a degree in Construction Management at CSU-Pueblo, I remain dedicated to fostering a supportive environment. The construction industry is fast-paced and high-stress, and mental health is often overlooked. My goal is to integrate emotional well-being into leadership by promoting positive workplace culture, advocating for mental health resources, and ensuring that those I work with feel valued and heard.
Beyond my career, I will continue mentoring youth and creating safe spaces for discussions about mental health. I firmly believe that change starts with individuals who are willing to lead with compassion. With my strong will, belief in my ability to make a difference, and unwavering dedication to my community, I am committed to building not just structures, but also stronger, healthier individuals.
John Geremia Memorial Industrial Trades Scholarship
My name is Slater Warren, and I am a dedicated and driven student with a deep passion for my community and a strong belief that I can make a difference. Growing up with a father who is a journeyman, I have developed a deep respect for skilled trades and the teamwork required to succeed in them. My background in football, where I achieved All-American status, has instilled in me discipline, leadership, and resilience—qualities I aim to bring into my career. I plan to study Construction Management at CSU-Pueblo, with the ultimate goal of contributing to large-scale infrastructure projects that serve the public.
One of the most defining leadership experiences I have had came when I was honored with the title of Alpha Grizzly, a recognition given to the most determined and dedicated player on my football team. This role required me to step up as a leader, using my communication skills to inspire those around me. The biggest challenge was convincing others that they could be more than they believed, but I understood that hard work was part of the process. Encouraging teammates to push beyond their limits and embrace challenges required patience, motivation, and leading by example. By consistently demonstrating my dedication and perseverance, I was able to foster a culture of accountability and resilience within my team.
This experience translates directly into my desired field of construction management. Just as in football, there will be setbacks that I must overcome, requiring quick decision-making and strategic problem-solving. Whether it is delays in materials, unexpected project challenges, or coordinating multiple teams, I will need to stay adaptable and find solutions to keep projects moving forward. The ability to lead a team through adversity and maintain focus on a common goal will be essential in ensuring the success of any construction project.
Looking back, one thing I would do differently is refine my approach to individualized motivation. While I was successful in inspiring many of my teammates, I now recognize that different individuals respond to different styles of encouragement. In construction management, just like in football, understanding how to effectively communicate and motivate diverse teams will be crucial to success. Just as linemen rely on teamwork and decision-making to ensure safety and efficiency, I intend to apply these principles in my field, using my leadership skills to make a meaningful impact.
Dustan Biegler Memorial Scholarship
From a young age, I have been drawn to the idea of building something greater than myself—both in a literal and figurative sense. Construction management is not just a career path for me; it is an opportunity to shape the communities we live in, ensuring they are sustainable, safe, and efficient. My deep passion and compassion for my community fuel my drive to enter the construction and skilled trades industry, as I believe infrastructure is the foundation of societal progress. I see construction as more than just erecting buildings—it is about creating environments where people can thrive, work, and build their own futures.

Through her, I have witnessed firsthand the power of service and the impact a well-built support system—both in mental health and physical infrastructure—can have on individuals and communities. My mother’s dedication to helping others has instilled in me the belief that through construction management, I can contribute to society by ensuring that the physical environments we live and work in foster success, safety, and well-being.
Additionally, my journey as a student-athlete has reinforced my strong work ethic, discipline, and perseverance. Achieving high academic merit while being selected as an All-American in football has taught me the value of dedication and resilience. These qualities will serve me well in the construction management field, where leadership, attention to detail, and problem-solving are essential. Just as I have pushed myself to excel on the field and in the classroom, I am prepared to bring that same determination to the construction industry.

Through my commitment to excellence and ethical leadership, I will strive to leave a legacy of progress, just as those before me have done. This scholarship will help me take the next step toward that goal, equipping me with the education and opportunities necessary to turn my vision into reality.
Sharra Rainbolt Memorial Scholarship
When I think of my grandfather, Mark, I don’t just remember the loss—I remember the love, the lessons, and the legacy he left behind. He was more than just my grandfather; he was my mentor, my adventure partner, and my first teacher in both science and music. Losing him to pancreatic cancer when I was nine years old left a void in my heart, but it also instilled in me a resilience and determination that continue to shape my life today.
Mark was an engineer at Tinker Air Force Base, a man whose mind was as sharp as his heart was kind. He had an innate curiosity about the world, and he passed that on to me in every interaction we shared. Whether we were strumming the guitar together, experimenting with simple chemistry projects in his garage, or setting off on spontaneous adventures through the Oklahoma countryside, he always encouraged me to ask questions, to explore, and to never stop learning. His passion for problem-solving and discovery sparked my own interest in engineering, and to this day, I carry his love for knowledge in everything I do.
When he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, my world changed. At such a young age, I struggled to comprehend the gravity of his illness, but I knew one thing: I wanted to spend every moment I could with him. As his health declined, I saw firsthand the toll that cancer takes—not just on the person fighting it, but on the entire family. My once-strong grandfather became weaker, yet he never let his spirit falter. He continued to smile, to encourage me, and to make the most of every day he had left. Watching him face his battle with such courage and grace taught me the true meaning of strength.
His passing was devastating. The man who had once been my greatest teacher was gone, and for a long time, I felt lost. But through my grief, I realized that his influence on me didn’t end with his life—it lives on in my dreams and aspirations. He inspired my love for engineering, and in pursuing this path, I honor his memory. I want to follow in his footsteps, not just by entering the engineering field, but by embodying his values of perseverance, curiosity, and kindness.
Beyond shaping my career ambitions, losing my grandfather to cancer taught me empathy. I now understand the silent struggles that so many families endure when faced with this disease. It has given me a deep sense of compassion for those who are fighting battles that aren’t always visible. It has also fueled my desire to make a difference—whether through engineering innovations that improve lives or simply by being there for others in times of need, just as my grandfather was for me.
I love and miss him more than words can describe, but I find comfort in knowing that his legacy lives on. Every time I pick up a guitar, every time I solve a complex problem, and every time I push myself to keep learning, I feel his presence. Cancer took him from me too soon, but it could never take away the lessons he taught me or the love we shared. And as I step forward into my future, I do so with his spirit guiding me, knowing that he would be proud.

NYT Connections Fan Scholarship
One of my favorite pastimes is playing The New York Times Connections puzzle with my mom, where we attempt to decipher the hidden links between words before the clock runs out. It’s a test of logic, pattern recognition, and sometimes sheer luck. For my own Connections puzzle, I’ve crafted a 4x4 grid featuring the following words:
Grid:
Mercury
Venus
Mars
Jupiter
Crimson
Emerald
Sapphire
Amber
Cello
Guitar
Violin
Piano
Hamlet
Macbeth
Othello
Lear
Each of these words belongs to a distinct category, requiring players to find the underlying relationships. Here are my four categories and the reasoning behind them:
Category 1: Planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter)
These four words are all the names of planets in our solar system. While the set includes both terrestrial and gas giants, what unites them is their celestial identity. Astronomy has always fascinated me, and this grouping reflects my appreciation for the vast, intricate universe beyond our world.
Category 2: Colors (Crimson, Emerald, Sapphire, Amber)
Each word in this group represents a color commonly associated with gemstones or natural elements. Crimson is a deep red, emerald a vibrant green, sapphire a rich blue, and amber a golden-orange hue. Colors evoke emotions and memories, and I often associate certain shades with different moments in my life, from the emerald trees in my childhood backyard to the crimson streaks of a sunset after a long day.
Category 3: String Instruments (Cello, Guitar, Violin, Piano)
Music has been a constant in my life, whether through learning an instrument or simply appreciating the compositions of great musicians. These four words represent string instruments—while the piano may seem like an outlier, its strings inside the instrument are struck by hammers, making it part of the same family. The connection between sound and emotion is something I deeply respect, as music has often been an outlet for my own thoughts and feelings.
Category 4: Shakespearean Tragedies (Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, Lear)
These four words are titles of tragedies written by William Shakespeare. Each play explores timeless themes of power, ambition, betrayal, and the complexities of human nature. Literature, particularly classic works, has shaped my understanding of storytelling and human psychology. I admire Shakespeare’s ability to craft narratives that remain relevant centuries later, and I hope to incorporate that level of depth into my own writing.
Beyond just being a fun challenge, Connections puzzles reflect how we perceive patterns and associations in everyday life. My puzzle represents my personal interests—space, art, music, and literature—all of which have shaped my worldview and intellectual curiosity. The process of categorization mirrors how I approach problem-solving, both in academics and in life. I enjoy looking beyond the surface, finding hidden links between seemingly unrelated concepts, and making sense of complexity.
In many ways, life itself is like a Connections puzzle. We sort through experiences, relationships, and knowledge, identifying the links that define who we are. Whether in science, creativity, or human interaction, understanding connections allows us to see the world with greater clarity. My hope is to continue making these discoveries, embracing the joy of solving the puzzles that come my way.
Elevate Mental Health Awareness Scholarship
Breaking the Stigma: A Journey of Empathy, Growth, and Purpose
From an early age, mental health was more than just a concept to me—it was a daily reality. Growing up with a mother who dedicated her life to running a mental health clinic, I witnessed firsthand the struggles, triumphs, and resilience of individuals battling mental health challenges. My home was often filled with conversations about the importance of therapy, the necessity of support systems, and the impact that compassion can have on someone's healing journey. This environment not only shaped my understanding of mental health but also deeply influenced my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations.
Mental health, in my experience, is not a battle fought in isolation; it is a shared struggle that affects families, friendships, and entire communities. My mother’s passion for her work instilled in me the belief that mental health is just as vital as physical health. Watching her advocate for her patients, work long hours to ensure they received proper care, and navigate the complexities of mental health treatment made me realize that empathy and understanding are powerful tools for change. This belief has driven me to view mental health challenges not as personal failings but as obstacles that require support, patience, and professional care to overcome.
My personal journey with anxiety further solidified my perspective. Anxiety can be overwhelming, making even the simplest tasks feel insurmountable. There were days when the weight of my thoughts made it difficult to focus, and nights when my mind raced with worries I couldn’t silence. However, instead of feeling ashamed, I learned to acknowledge my struggles and seek help when needed. I leaned on the lessons my mother taught me—coping mechanisms, self-care practices, and, most importantly, the willingness to talk about what I was experiencing. This experience gave me a newfound respect for the resilience of those who battle mental health conditions daily, and it reinforced my belief that no one should have to fight these battles alone.
These experiences have profoundly shaped my relationships. I have learned to be more patient, more understanding, and more willing to listen. Whether it’s a friend struggling with depression, a teammate dealing with performance anxiety, or a classmate overwhelmed by academic pressure, I strive to be a source of support. I have become the person who checks in, who offers encouragement, and who reminds others that they are not alone. My exposure to mental health struggles, both personally and through my mother’s work, has made me keenly aware of the importance of fostering safe spaces where people feel comfortable sharing their feelings without fear of judgment.
As I pursue a career in engineering, one might assume that my passion for mental health would take a backseat. However, I see a profound connection between the two. The field of engineering thrives on problem-solving and innovation—two skills that are crucial in addressing mental health challenges. Whether it is designing technology that enhances access to mental health resources, creating stress-reducing environments, or advocating for workplace mental health awareness, I plan to integrate my understanding of mental health into my future career. Additionally, my background in football and mentoring young athletes has shown me the importance of mental resilience in high-pressure environments. I aim to continue supporting young athletes by promoting mental well-being alongside physical performance, ensuring they have the tools to succeed both on and off the field.
Ultimately, my experiences with mental health have shaped me into a more compassionate, driven, and purpose-oriented individual. They have taught me that empathy is not just about understanding someone’s pain but actively working to alleviate it. Through my career, my relationships, and my everyday interactions, I hope to continue advocating for mental health awareness, ensuring that those who struggle never feel alone in their journey. Winning the Elevate Mental Health Awareness scholarship would not only support my educational aspirations but also empower me to further my mission of creating a world where mental health is prioritized, understood, and supported.

Evan T. Wissing Memorial Scholarship
Growing up with a father who is a U.S. veteran has been both an honor and a challenge. My dad, having served his country with bravery, returned home with invisible wounds—PTSD. While his experiences shaped him into a strong man, they also built walls between us, making communication difficult and connection even harder. The man who had fought for freedom often seemed trapped within his own mind, struggling with memories I could never fully understand.
As a child, I longed for a bond that felt just out of reach. I wanted to share my triumphs and struggles, to hear words of encouragement, to feel the warmth of support that so many of my peers received from their fathers. But PTSD cast a long shadow over our relationship. Conversations were brief, sometimes tense, and often left me feeling unheard. There were times when I felt invisible, even in his presence, and the disappointment of lacking his emotional support weighed heavily on me.
That absence of connection led to a deep sense of loneliness. Even when surrounded by others, I often felt isolated, as if I were existing in a different space than everyone else. Watching friends share lighthearted moments with their fathers made me acutely aware of what I was missing. This loneliness seeped into my sense of self-worth, making me question my purpose and my place in the world. Why am I here? What difference do I make? These questions haunted me, often leaving me lost in my own thoughts, searching for meaning where I saw none.
Despite these struggles, I have chosen not to let them define me. Instead, I have sought ways to rise above them. I have learned to build connections in other places, finding mentors, friends, and even teachers who have stepped into roles of guidance and encouragement. I have become someone who listens deeply, understanding that communication is more than just words—it's about presence, patience, and understanding.
I have also found purpose in helping others who feel unseen. Whether it’s lending an ear to a friend in need or volunteering in my community, I strive to be the support for others that I sometimes lacked. I have come to realize that my experiences, while painful, have shaped me into someone who can empathize with those facing similar struggles.
The journey to finding peace in my circumstances is ongoing, but I am proud of the resilience I have built. I have learned that meaning is not something handed to us—it is something we create through our actions and the way we choose to show up in the world. My struggles have made me stronger, and I am determined to use them as fuel to forge a future filled with purpose, connection, and hope.

Growing Up: A Comedy in Four Acts
Act One: The Early Days
I entered the world with a mighty shriek,
Demanding attention, week after week.
Diapers, tantrums, a sippy cup war,
Toddlerhood’s struggles were hard to ignore.
A tricycle race straight into a tree,
Mom yelled, "You're fine!" (I doubted her plea).
Cuts and bruises, scraped-up knees,
A childhood filled with minor tragedies.
Act Two: The Awkward Phase
Middle school hit like a pie to the face,
Braces, bad hair, a wardrobe disgrace.
Voice cracks, acne, a growth spurt gone wild,
Nothing was graceful—I was not a "cool" child.
Asked my crush out with a note (big mistake),
She laughed so hard, I felt the earth quake.
Gym class dodgeball? A personal doom,
Picked last again—just give me a broom.
Act Three: Teenage Trials
High school arrived, my moment to shine!
Except for geometry (not quite divine).
Parallel lines never did meet,
Much like my GPA and "elite."
But setbacks became my fuel for success,
I learned to work hard, to clean up my mess.
Tests, essays, deadlines galore,
I fought through the chaos and asked for more.
Act Four: The Rise
Now here I stand, with stories to tell,
A master of mishaps, I wear them well.
I’ve tripped, I’ve fallen, I’ve fumbled my way,
Yet each mistake has paved my stay.
Growing up’s messy, a laugh and a fall,
But I wouldn’t trade a second at all.
For each awkward blunder, each failure’s disgrace,
Has taught me to rise—and do so with grace.
Future Leaders Scholarship
Throughout my academic and athletic journey, leadership has been the foundation of my success. One of my proudest moments was being selected as the Alpha Grizzly on my football team, a title awarded to the player who demonstrates the highest level of discipline, leadership, and accountability. Balancing the demands of academics, athletics, work, and social life was no easy feat, but it shaped me into a leader who thrives under pressure and inspires others to do the same.
As Alpha Grizzly, I was responsible for setting the standard for my teammates both on and off the field. I led by example, ensuring that I was always the first to arrive at practice and the last to leave. My leadership extended beyond physical effort; I emphasized mental resilience, teamwork, and integrity. Many of my teammates struggled with time management, motivation, and self-discipline, so I took it upon myself to mentor them. I helped them create study schedules, encouraged them to stay accountable, and provided support during tough times. My ability to balance a 4.0 GPA while working and excelling in football became an inspiration for those around me.
However, being a leader also meant facing challenges head-on. One of the biggest hurdles I encountered was maintaining team morale during a losing streak. The frustration and disappointment weighed heavily on my teammates, leading to decreased motivation and performance. Instead of letting negativity take over, I initiated team meetings where we addressed our struggles openly. I reminded everyone that our worth was not solely defined by wins and losses but by our effort, growth, and perseverance. To reignite our passion, I introduced additional film study sessions and team-building exercises to strengthen our bond and improve our performance. By the end of the season, we saw a remarkable shift in attitude and unity, which led to a strong finish and personal growth for each player.
Academically, I faced similar challenges. Maintaining a perfect GPA while juggling football and work required immense discipline. Late nights studying, early morning workouts, and long hours at my job tested my endurance. To overcome these obstacles, I developed a strict schedule, prioritizing tasks efficiently while ensuring I had time to recharge. My ability to adapt and stay organized was crucial to my success, and I often shared my strategies with peers who struggled with time management.
The leadership skills I honed as Alpha Grizzly will continue to shape my future. As I pursue my career, I plan to apply my ability to motivate and guide others to make a positive impact. Whether in the workplace, my community, or personal endeavors, I will use my resilience, adaptability, and commitment to excellence to inspire those around me. Leadership is not about titles; it is about actions, and I am committed to leading with integrity, empathy, and determination.
Ultimately, my experiences as a student-athlete and mentor have prepared me to tackle future challenges with confidence. I am eager to apply my leadership skills in ways that create meaningful change, proving that discipline, accountability, and perseverance can pave the way for success in any field. Through hard work and a commitment to uplifting others, I will continue striving to make a lasting difference in the lives of those around me.
Autumn Davis Memorial Scholarship
Growing up, I was surrounded by conversations about healing, self-awareness, and emotional resilience. My mother and aunt, both therapists, instilled in me an appreciation for the complexity of the human mind and the transformative power of therapy. My father, a U.S. veteran, has battled PTSD as a result of his deployments, which has given me a firsthand understanding of the mental health challenges faced by those who serve our country. Witnessing their dedication to helping others navigate their struggles deeply influenced my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. As I pursue a career in mental health, I am eager to make a positive impact on the world by guiding individuals toward self-improvement and emotional well-being.
One of the most profound lessons I have learned through my experiences with mental health is that change is difficult. People are inherently resistant—whether due to fear, past trauma, or societal stigmas—but that does not mean change is impossible. I have always been a highly empathetic person, and this has allowed me to connect deeply with others, understanding their pain and struggles without judgment. However, I have also come to realize that not everyone is ready for help, no matter how much I want to see them thrive. This understanding has shaped my belief that personal growth must be a self-driven process. My role, as a future mental health professional, will not be to force change upon others, but to support and empower those who are willing to embark on the journey of self-betterment.
Empathy has been both a gift and a challenge in my relationships. It allows me to be a supportive friend and confidant, but it has also made me vulnerable to emotional exhaustion. I have had to learn the importance of boundaries—an essential skill for anyone in the mental health field. Through personal experiences, I have grown to understand that while I can offer support and encouragement, individuals must ultimately take responsibility for their healing. This realization has helped me cultivate healthier relationships and strengthened my commitment to becoming an effective therapist who balances compassion with self-care.
My career aspirations have been profoundly influenced by my desire to help those who actively seek self-improvement. I want to create a space where people feel safe to confront their challenges without fear of judgment. Through my education and future professional practice, I aim to develop strategies that encourage individuals to embrace growth, even when it feels uncomfortable. Whether working in private practice, community mental health, or advocacy, I want to be a guiding force for those who are ready to change their lives for the better.
Beyond individual therapy, I also hope to contribute to destigmatizing mental health conversations in society. Too often, mental health struggles are viewed as weaknesses rather than challenges to be addressed with the same urgency as physical health issues. By engaging in outreach, education, and advocacy, I want to shift perspectives and create a culture where seeking mental health support is seen as an act of strength rather than shame.
My personal experiences have reinforced my belief that mental health care should be accessible and compassionate. As I move forward in my academic and professional journey, I am committed to being a source of hope and guidance for those who are ready to take control of their well-being. I believe that every person deserves the opportunity to heal and grow, and I am eager to dedicate my career to making that belief a reality. Through empathy, education, and unwavering support, I plan to make a lasting impact in the field of mental health—one person at a time.
Learner Calculus Scholarship
The Importance of Calculus in the STEM Field
Calculus is the foundation upon which many principles of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) are built. It serves as a powerful tool for analyzing change, modeling complex systems, and solving real-world problems. From physics and engineering to economics and computer science, calculus plays a crucial role in advancing knowledge and innovation. Understanding its significance helps highlight why it remains an essential subject for students pursuing careers in STEM fields.
One of the most fundamental contributions of calculus to STEM is its ability to describe motion and change. Sir Isaac Newton and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz developed calculus to address problems in physics, particularly those involving motion, gravity, and planetary orbits. Today, physics still relies heavily on calculus to model acceleration, force, and energy. Engineers use calculus to design bridges, buildings, and aircraft by analyzing forces and structural stability. Without calculus, many of the technological advancements in transportation, aerospace, and mechanics would not have been possible.
In the field of engineering, calculus is indispensable. Whether in electrical, mechanical, civil, or software engineering, professionals use calculus to optimize designs, calculate stress distributions, and analyze fluid dynamics. For example, civil engineers rely on calculus when designing roads, tunnels, and water supply systems to ensure efficiency and safety. Electrical engineers use calculus to understand signal processing, electromagnetism, and circuit behavior. Calculus allows engineers to make precise calculations that lead to the creation of reliable and efficient technologies.
Biological sciences also benefit from calculus, particularly in the fields of medicine and epidemiology. Researchers use calculus to model population growth, spread of diseases, and the effects of pharmaceuticals in the human body. In medical imaging, such as MRI and CT scans, calculus-based algorithms process data to create detailed images of internal structures. Understanding rates of change and accumulation helps doctors and scientists develop better treatment plans, predict disease outbreaks, and improve public health strategies.
In the realm of computer science, calculus plays a key role in machine learning, artificial intelligence, and data analysis. Algorithms in machine learning often involve gradient descent, an optimization technique rooted in calculus. Computer graphics and animation, which require realistic movement and transformations, rely on calculus to render smooth transitions and lifelike physics. Even cybersecurity uses calculus for encryption and decryption processes that secure online communication. As technology continues to evolve, calculus remains a vital tool in advancing computational methods and artificial intelligence systems.
Beyond specific applications, calculus fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills essential in STEM fields. It teaches students how to break down complex problems, analyze patterns, and develop logical solutions. The problem-solving mindset developed through studying calculus translates to various scientific and technological disciplines, where analytical thinking is crucial for innovation and discovery.
Moreover, calculus is integral to economic and financial modeling. Businesses and economists use it to forecast market trends, optimize production processes, and analyze risk. Calculus enables professionals to make informed decisions based on changing variables, ensuring efficient resource allocation and strategic planning. Without calculus, predicting financial markets and optimizing investment portfolios would be far less precise.
The importance of calculus in the STEM field cannot be overstated. It is a universal language that connects different scientific disciplines, enabling groundbreaking discoveries and technological advancements. Whether in engineering, medicine, computer science, or economics, calculus provides the tools necessary to understand and manipulate the world around us. Eleven Scholarship
Life’s greatest lessons often come wrapped in moments of failure, frustration, and adversity. For me, one such moment occurred during my junior year of high school when I failed to secure a spot in an elite STEM summer program I had been working toward for months. I had spent countless hours refining my application, researching the program’s curriculum, and preparing for the interview, only to receive the dreaded rejection email. At that moment, I felt a deep sense of disappointment and self-doubt. Was I not good enough? Had I wasted my efforts? However, instead of allowing the rejection to define me, I decided to redefine the experience itself.
I turned my setback into a stepping stone by taking a proactive approach. Rather than dwelling on the rejection, I analyzed what might have gone wrong. I reached out to previous program participants for insights, sought feedback from my mentors, and identified areas in which I could improve. I realized that while I had strong academic credentials, my application lacked a compelling personal story that demonstrated resilience and passion. This realization fueled my determination to push beyond my comfort zone.
I sought out alternative opportunities to expand my knowledge and skills. Instead of just focusing on personal achievements, I turned my energy toward mentoring younger students, helping them develop their technical skills and confidence, through my high school's peer-based program. Through these efforts, I not only enhanced my qualifications but also discovered the joy of teaching and uplifting others.
The most important lesson I learned from this experience was that setbacks are not dead ends; they are detours leading to even greater opportunities. My rejection did not mean I wasn’t capable—it simply meant I had more to learn and room to grow. This mindset has since shaped my approach to challenges, reinforcing the idea that success is not about avoiding failure but about embracing it as a catalyst for self-improvement.
Given my experience, I would eagerly participate in a mentorship program with Inspire11. The opportunity to learn from professionals who have navigated their own obstacles and achieved success would be invaluable. I believe mentorship is a two-way street—it provides guidance, but it also offers the mentee a chance to contribute fresh perspectives and enthusiasm. Being part of such a program would help me refine my career aspirations, gain practical industry insights, and build a network of like-minded individuals who share the philosophy of always “turning it up to 11.”
By participating in Inspire11’s mentorship program, I would continue to push my boundaries and challenge myself to achieve new heights. Whether through hands-on projects, exposure to real-world problem-solving, or meaningful discussions with mentors, I know that this experience would reinforce my commitment to excellence and innovation. Moreover, I would take the lessons learned and pay them forward by mentoring others, just as I have done in my STEM initiatives. The cycle of learning and teaching is, after all, one of the most powerful ways to create lasting impact.
In conclusion, failure is not a measure of our limits but an invitation to exceed them. My experience with rejection taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of persistence. By embracing challenges and continuously striving to improve, I have learned that success is not merely about talent but about perseverance and the willingness to go the extra mile. Through Inspire11’s mentorship program, I hope to continue this journey—learning, growing, and inspiring others to do the same. Because when you turn it up to 11, there are no limits to what you can achieve.

The impact of the armed forces extends far beyond the battlefield, influencing the lives of countless families and individuals. For me, the most profound impact has come from my father, a U.S. veteran whose values of discipline, resilience, and service have shaped the person I am today. His transition from military service to becoming an HVAC journeyman demonstrated an unwavering commitment to hard work and perseverance. Alongside him, my mother’s dedication to her education and her career as a therapist serving refugees and those in need has reinforced my understanding of sacrifice, compassion, and the pursuit of a greater purpose. Their example has influenced my personal and professional aspirations, particularly in my pursuit of a career in construction management, where I hope to embody their values of diligence and service.
Growing up in a household that deeply respects the sacrifices of service members, I have come to understand gratitude in a unique way. To me, gratitude for our military is not just about saying “thank you” but about carrying forward the principles they fought to protect. My father’s military background instilled in me a deep respect for discipline, structure, and perseverance—qualities that I have applied to my own life. His journey has shown me that true strength is not just about physical endurance but about resilience in the face of adversity. Witnessing his post-military career in HVAC, where he worked tirelessly to provide for our family, has taught me that no task is too small when it comes to supporting others.
Similarly, my mother’s relentless pursuit of education while raising a family has emphasized the importance of perseverance and self-improvement. Her commitment to helping refugees and individuals facing hardships has broadened my perspective on service, showing me that dedication to others can take many forms. Her compassion and willingness to uplift those in need align with the same spirit of service my father demonstrated in the military. Through her, I have learned that gratitude is more than appreciation—it is action. It is using our own strengths and opportunities to give back in meaningful ways.
As I pursue a career in construction management, I carry these lessons with me. Construction is an industry built on resilience, teamwork, and problem-solving—qualities that are deeply aligned with military values. I am not afraid of hard work, and I take pride in putting forth my best effort in every endeavor. I see construction as more than just building structures; it is about creating communities, providing safe spaces, and contributing to something greater than myself. In many ways, I view this career path as an extension of my parents’ legacies—my father’s dedication to skilled trades and my mother’s commitment to improving lives.
My gratitude for service members extends beyond words. It manifests in my work ethic, my aspirations, and my commitment to embodying the values they have fought to uphold. By honoring their sacrifices through my own dedication to excellence and service, I hope to make a meaningful contribution to society. Just as my father and mother have inspired me, I strive to inspire others through perseverance, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to building a better future.

GUTS- Olivia Rodrigo Fan Scholarship
Scholarship Essay: “GUTS” Lyric Resonating with My Teenage Experience
One lyric from Olivia Rodrigo's album GUTS that resonates deeply with my own teenage experience is from the song “Get Him Back!”: “I don’t really want to be your friend, I want to be your lover.” While the song is sung from a female perspective, this line speaks to the universal confusion and intensity of adolescence, regardless of gender. The lyric captures the raw, emotional complexity of young relationships, which is something I have struggled with as a teenager.
Throughout high school, I found myself caught in a constant tug-of-war between the pressures of fitting in, managing friendships, and trying to navigate romantic relationships. I always seemed to experience that classic teenage dilemma where the lines between platonic and romantic feelings became blurred. Whether it was trying to decode the subtle signals of a crush or dealing with the fallout of a broken friendship that crossed into something more, the line “I don’t really want to be your friend, I want to be your lover” perfectly reflects the confusion and yearning of this stage in life.
As a heterosexual male, I’ve often felt the pressure to appear emotionally unaffected or detached, particularly in relationships. Yet, the truth is, adolescence forces you to confront the vulnerability of your emotions. Rodrigo’s lyric captures that moment of realization—when you realize that what you feel goes beyond the simple confines of friendship. But it’s also a time when emotions aren’t always clear-cut, and figuring out whether you’re in love, infatuated, or just seeking validation can be overwhelming.
This lyric not only speaks to the emotional rollercoaster of growing up but also to the challenges of navigating the complexities of relationships. As a teenager, there’s this constant need to “figure it out,” but more often than not, it feels like you’re just stumbling through it. At times, it’s a delicate balance of wanting something more, but also fearing rejection, misunderstanding, or simply not being ready to fully open up.
In my own experiences, whether with friendships or romantic interests, I’ve realized that adolescence is less about having all the answers and more about embracing the uncertainties of youth. The lyric from “Get Him Back!” is a reminder that, even though these emotional struggles may feel unique, they are a shared part of growing up, and everyone goes through their own version of this search for identity and connection.
Ultimately, this lyric resonates with me because it encapsulates how, during this stage of life, our desires and emotions are often at odds with the expectations of society or our peers. But it’s these very contradictions that shape who we are and how we learn to navigate the world as we grow into adulthood.
LeBron James Fan Scholarship
Why I Am a Fan of LeBron James and His Legacy as the Greatest of All Time
When people think of LeBron James, they often picture the four-time NBA champion, the four-time MVP, and the all-time leading scorer. However, my admiration for LeBron James extends far beyond his on-court dominance. I am a fan of LeBron James because of his unwavering commitment to excellence, his relentless dedication to giving back, and his embodiment of leadership through kindness and positivity. Whether or not he is the greatest basketball player of all time is a debate filled with statistics and accolades, but to me, his legacy as a role model, philanthropist, and leader makes him the greatest in ways that extend beyond the game of basketball.
LeBron’s story is one of perseverance and resilience. Born to a single mother in Akron, Ohio, he faced adversity from a young age. Yet, instead of letting his circumstances define him, he used them as motivation to build a better future—not only for himself but for others. His dedication to giving back is best exemplified through the LeBron James Family Foundation and the I PROMISE School, which provides underprivileged children with free education, meals, and opportunities they might never have had otherwise. This initiative is a testament to his belief that true greatness lies in lifting others up, a philosophy I strive to emulate in my own life.
Beyond philanthropy, LeBron embodies positivity and kindness. He is an advocate for social justice, using his platform to speak out against inequality and support communities in need. Unlike many athletes who shy away from controversial topics, he embraces his role as a leader, proving that success is not just about personal achievement but about making a difference. His ability to stay humble despite his success and to uplift those around him makes him a figure worth admiring.
As for whether LeBron James is the greatest basketball player of all time, the answer depends on how greatness is defined. If it is measured purely by rings, Michael Jordan’s six championships may hold more weight. However, if greatness is measured by impact—both on and off the court—LeBron James stands at the pinnacle. His longevity, versatility, and ability to excel in every aspect of the game make him a once-in-a-generation athlete. But beyond that, his humanitarian efforts and dedication to making the world a better place set him apart.
LeBron James is more than an athlete; he is an inspiration. His work ethic, kindness, and commitment to uplifting others serve as a blueprint for success in any field. That is why I am proud to call myself a fan of LeBron James—not just for his basketball prowess, but for the person he is and the legacy he continues to build.
Bear Fan Scholarship
The Perfect Ending to The Bear
Few shows have captured the raw intensity of ambition, family, and personal growth quite like The Bear. With its deeply flawed yet compelling characters and its fast-paced, high-stakes kitchen drama, the series has resonated with audiences in a way that transcends mere entertainment. As the show progresses, fans are left wondering: How will it all end? For me, the perfect conclusion would be one that balances triumph with realism—showing that success is never perfect, but it is possible with perseverance, growth, and acceptance.
At the heart of the show is Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, a brilliant yet tormented chef who has spent his life striving for perfection while carrying the weight of his past. The perfect ending for Carmy would not be about achieving culinary perfection but rather finding peace within himself. He should finally come to terms with his brother Mikey’s death, learning to embrace his own humanity rather than punishing himself for every failure. I imagine him earning a Michelin star for The Bear, proving that his relentless pursuit of excellence has paid off. But more importantly, I see him surrounded by the people who have become his family—not just colleagues, but true partners in his journey.
Sydney Adamu has always been the heart of innovation and determination in the restaurant. By the series finale, she should stand fully beside Carmy, not as his sous-chef, but as his equal. She deserves co-ownership of The Bear, cementing her place as a force to be reckoned with in the culinary world. Through her hard work and resilience, she should gain industry-wide recognition, proving that her talent was never in question—only her opportunity to shine.
Richie, once the show's lost soul, has undergone one of the most satisfying arcs. His ending should see him as the true leader of the front-of-house, earning respect not through intimidation but through genuine hospitality. More than anything, Richie deserves to be a father that his daughter can admire. By finding confidence in his own skills and purpose, he can finally step out of the shadow of past regrets and fully embrace the future.
Marcus, the ever-passionate pastry chef, should get the opportunity to explore the world of desserts beyond Chicago, perhaps even taking a transformative journey to Copenhagen. However, his return to The Bear would be vital—bringing back new techniques and wisdom to elevate their menu. His story should emphasize that success is not a destination but an ongoing adventure.
Finally, The Bear itself should not just be a restaurant—it should be a symbol of resilience, reinvention, and community. The series should end with a packed dining room, filled with people who believe in what the restaurant represents. The kitchen, once a battleground of chaos, should now be a harmonious machine, not perfect, but functional—a reflection of the characters who have found balance in their own lives.
A happy ending for The Bear isn’t about erasing struggles; it’s about showing that struggle is part of the journey. It’s about proving that success doesn’t mean perfection, but rather perseverance, teamwork, and the ability to find beauty in the imperfections. That is the perfect ending for me.
Chappell Roan Superfan Scholarship
The Impact of Chappell Roan’s Music on My Life
Music has always been a guiding force in my life, shaping the way I see the world and express myself. While my playlist is typically filled with rock, hip-hop, and country, discovering Chappell Roan’s music was an unexpected but powerful experience. Her artistry is raw, unapologetic, and deeply personal—qualities that transcend gender or genre. One song in particular, Casual, resonated with me as a heterosexual male navigating modern relationships, and it reinforced why I support her career wholeheartedly.
In a world where emotional detachment is often encouraged, especially among men, Casual offers a different perspective. The song explores the pain of one-sided affection and the emotional vulnerability that comes with wanting something real. While the lyrics may be written from her perspective, they reflect a universal experience—the frustration of investing in someone who only wants to keep things surface-level. As a guy, it’s easy to feel pressure to play it cool, to not care too much, but this song made me realize that there’s strength in admitting when you do. It validated feelings I hadn’t even acknowledged and gave me a space to process them.
Beyond her music, I support Chappell Roan because she represents something bigger than herself. She’s an artist who is fearless in her expression, blending theatricality with authenticity. She encourages individuality and emotional honesty, which are values that should be celebrated in any artist, regardless of genre or audience. Even though she primarily appeals to an LGBTQ+ fanbase, her music speaks to a broader human experience—one of love, loss, joy, and self-discovery.
Scholarships like this help students pursue their dreams, and that’s exactly what Chappell Roan is doing with her music. She’s proving that you don’t have to conform to mainstream expectations to make an impact. Her career is worth supporting because she challenges norms and gives people permission to be themselves. In a world that often tells us to be less—less emotional, less different, less bold—she encourages us to be more. That’s the kind of artist who deserves success.
Charli XCX brat Fan Scholarship
One song on Charli XCX’s Brat that resonates with me deeply is “So I.” While Charli is often known for hyperpop and experimental production, this track stands out because of its raw introspection and vulnerability. As a young man navigating the transition to adulthood, “So I” captures emotions I often struggle to articulate—the feeling of chasing dreams, experiencing isolation, and wondering whether I’m truly on the right path.
The lyrics explore themes of ambition, self-doubt, and the loneliness that can come with striving for success. Charli sings about the pressures of maintaining an image, balancing relationships, and questioning whether she’s doing enough. These struggles aren’t limited to artists; they resonate with anyone who has ever felt the weight of expectation. As someone who is working hard to earn a scholarship and create a future I’m proud of, I often ask myself similar questions: Am I doing enough? Will my efforts pay off? Will I achieve the goals I set for myself?
What makes “So I” even more relatable is its sound. The track blends melancholic synths with an almost haunting vocal delivery, mirroring the tension between hope and uncertainty. It reminds me that feeling lost is part of the journey and that even those who seem successful still wrestle with self-doubt. In a world where men are often expected to suppress their emotions, this song serves as a reminder that vulnerability is not weakness but rather a sign of authenticity and growth.
Ultimately, “So I” is more than just a song—it’s a reflection of my own aspirations and fears. It validates the emotions I sometimes struggle to express and reassures me that I’m not alone in my journey. Music has a unique way of connecting people through shared experiences, and for me, “So I” is a track that encapsulates the highs and lows of ambition, making it my favorite song on Brat.
Billie Eilish Fan Scholarship
The Soundtrack of My Story: Three Billie Eilish Songs That Resonate With Me
Music has a way of speaking to us in ways that words alone cannot. For me, Billie Eilish’s music has been more than just songs on a playlist; they have been companions through different phases of my life. Despite being a male listener, I find deep personal connections to her lyrics, emotions, and storytelling. Three of her songs—everything i wanted, idontwannabeyouanymore, and Male Fantasy—stand out as anthems that reflect my struggles, growth, and self-discovery.
The first song, everything i wanted, resonates with me on a profound level because it speaks to the weight of expectations and self-doubt. As someone who has always pushed myself to achieve, there have been moments where success felt empty and where I questioned if my dreams were truly mine. The lyrics, “I had a dream, I got everything I wanted,” capture the paradox of striving for goals only to feel lost upon achieving them. This song reminds me that personal fulfillment isn’t found in accomplishments alone but in the people who stand by us—like my family and close friends who keep me grounded when I struggle with pressure.
Another song that deeply connects with me is idontwannabeyouanymore. While the song is often interpreted as a message about self-worth, I relate to it as a reflection of my own battle with self-identity. There were times when I felt like I had to fit a mold—whether it was being the “strong” one in my family or the “leader” among my peers. The line, “Tell the mirror what you know she’s heard before,” hits me hard because it reminds me of the moments I’ve stood in front of my own reflection, wishing to be someone else, someone who didn’t feel the pressure to be perfect. This song pushes me to embrace my flaws and understand that vulnerability is not weakness—it’s strength.
Finally, Male Fantasy holds a unique place in my heart because it confronts the complexities of emotions that men are often told to suppress. The song explores themes of longing and unspoken pain, which are rarely acknowledged in male narratives. Society often tells men to move on quickly, to be “tough,” but Billie’s melancholic delivery of “Can’t get over you, no matter what I do,” reminds me that healing is not linear. It’s okay to sit with emotions, process them, and find closure in my own time.
Billie Eilish’s music speaks to me in ways I never expected. Her songs remind me that emotions are universal, regardless of gender. They give me permission to be reflective, vulnerable, and authentic. Through her music, I have learned that strength isn’t about suppressing emotions but about embracing them. These songs have been a part of my journey, and in many ways, they have helped shape the person I am becoming.
Sabrina Carpenter Superfan Scholarship
Why I Am a Fan of Sabrina Carpenter and How Her Career Has Impacted Me
Authenticity. Fearlessness. Pursuing dreams regardless of challenges. These words perfectly describe why I am a fan of Sabrina Carpenter and how her career has profoundly impacted me. More than just a talented singer and actress, she represents the kind of perseverance and self-belief that I strive to embody in my own life.
From a young age, I admired how Sabrina fearlessly pursued her dreams, despite the inevitable setbacks that come with the entertainment industry. She started her career as a child actress, but rather than settling into a single role, she expanded her artistry, diving into music and continuously evolving her sound. Her ability to transition between different creative fields, staying true to herself along the way, inspired me to chase my own passions without fear of failure.
Sabrina’s authenticity is another quality that resonates deeply with me. In an industry that often encourages conformity, she has remained unapologetically herself. Her music reflects real emotions, personal struggles, and growth—something that has comforted and motivated me during my own challenges. Listening to songs like Skin and Because I Liked a Boy, I felt a sense of connection and validation, realizing that it’s okay to embrace both the triumphs and struggles in life.
Her journey has also taught me the importance of resilience. Like many, I have faced moments of self-doubt and external challenges that made me question my capabilities. However, watching Sabrina navigate obstacles with confidence and grace has encouraged me to persist in my own ambitions. Whether it’s applying for scholarships, taking on leadership roles, or stepping outside my comfort zone, I remind myself that success comes from embracing the journey, not just the destination.
Ultimately, Sabrina Carpenter is more than a celebrity to me—she is a role model who embodies the values I aspire to live by. Her career has shown me that with authenticity, fearlessness, and an unwavering commitment to my dreams, I can overcome any challenge that comes my way. Just as she continues to break barriers and redefine her own path, I hope to do the same in my own life, regardless of where the road may lead.
Love Island Fan Scholarship
Title: Love Island Challenge: "Heartstrings or Head Games?"
Reality TV thrives on unexpected twists, and Love Island is no exception. My brand-new challenge, "Heartstrings or Head Games?", will push contestants beyond the usual mix of flirtation and fitness, diving deep into the emotional and psychological connections between couples. This challenge will test whether bonds are built on true emotion or strategic gameplay, adding an intense layer of drama and excitement to the villa.
Challenge Concept:
In "Heartstrings or Head Games?", each couple will face a series of emotionally charged scenarios designed to evaluate their authenticity, compatibility, and resilience. These scenarios will include elements of trust, communication, and problem-solving, forcing islanders to confront real-life relationship challenges rather than just fun and games. The challenge will unfold in three rounds, each more intense than the last.
Round One: "Truth or Twist"
Islanders will take turns answering deep, thought-provoking questions about their relationship. However, there's a twist: hidden among genuine responses will be a few planted, misleading answers from the Love Island producers. Each contestant must identify whether their partner’s response is authentic or a strategic deception. This round will test how well they truly understand each other’s emotions, values, and personalities.
Round Two: "The Ex Factor"
Nothing shakes up Love Island more than past relationships, so in this round, islanders will be faced with a dilemma: their exes will provide a recorded message revealing a crucial detail about their past relationship—either a positive trait or a major red flag. The current partner must decide whether to trust their island lover or let doubts creep in. This round will expose how much trust each couple has built and whether past baggage influences their connection.
Round Three: "Ride or Die"
The final and most challenging round puts couples in high-pressure situations. One partner will be given a tempting offer: leave the villa with a cash prize, or stay and continue the relationship. However, what they don’t know is that their partner is secretly watching their decision. This will determine if their connection is genuine or if they were playing the game for personal gain. If both choose love, they win an exclusive romantic getaway. If one chooses money, they leave solo but richer. If both choose money, they both walk away empty-handed.
Impact on Love Island:
This challenge introduces a psychological depth never seen before on Love Island. It will test loyalty, emotional intelligence, and true compatibility rather than just physical attraction. Viewers will be captivated as they watch whether contestants are in it for love or simply playing the ultimate game. "Heartstrings or Head Games?" will redefine what it means to win on Love Island—because sometimes, the biggest prize isn’t money or a title, but a relationship that can stand the test of time.
Conclusion:
Love Island is all about the unpredictable, and my challenge injects a fresh level of intensity, drama, and emotional investment into the villa. "Heartstrings or Head Games?" isn't just a test—it's a reckoning. Who’s truly in love, and who’s just in it to win it? This challenge will reveal all.
With this innovative idea, Love Island will continue to keep audiences on the edge of their seats while offering contestants the ultimate relationship test. So, who’s ready to play?
A Security Insurance Agency Scholarship
Addressing the Homeowners’ Insurance Crisis: A Sustainable Solution
The increasing frequency and severity of natural disasters have led to an exodus of insurance companies from high-risk states like Florida, California, and Texas. As a result, homeowners’ insurance premiums have skyrocketed, rendering coverage unaffordable for many, especially retirees and single parents. To address this crisis, a multi-faceted solution that benefits both policyholders and insurers while ensuring market stability is necessary. The key elements of this approach include government-backed reinsurance, incentivized mitigation efforts, and increased public-private partnerships.
One significant solution is the establishment of a federally backed reinsurance program, similar to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Reinsurance would provide financial stability to private insurers, encouraging them to continue offering coverage in high-risk areas. By spreading risk at a national level, the financial burden on insurers would be reduced, allowing for lower premiums while maintaining market competitiveness.
Additionally, incentivizing homeowners to implement mitigation measures is crucial. States and insurance agencies should promote programs that offer premium discounts for homes fortified against natural disasters. For example, subsidies or tax incentives for hurricane-proof roofs, fire-resistant materials, and flood barriers could make insurance coverage more affordable while reducing overall claims. Similarly, local governments can enforce stricter building codes and zoning laws to ensure safer construction in high-risk areas.
Public-private partnerships also play a vital role in addressing this crisis. Insurance agencies can collaborate with state governments and non-profit organizations to educate homeowners on risk management and disaster preparedness. Furthermore, insurance companies should offer flexible coverage options tailored to different income levels, making policies more accessible to vulnerable populations. A tiered insurance model could provide basic, essential coverage at a lower cost, while still allowing for more comprehensive plans for those who can afford them.
Insurance agencies can actively participate in this solution by advocating for policy changes, offering risk-reduction education, and leveraging technology to improve risk assessment. By integrating artificial intelligence and data analytics, agencies can more accurately determine risk levels, leading to fairer pricing structures. Additionally, insurance brokers can help clients navigate state and federal assistance programs to ensure they receive the support they need.
In conclusion, addressing the homeowners’ insurance crisis requires a balanced approach that benefits both insurers and policyholders. A combination of government-backed reinsurance, mitigation incentives, and public-private collaboration will create a more sustainable and affordable insurance market. By adopting these measures, we can ensure that all homeowners—regardless of income level—have access to the protection they need against natural disasters.

Elizabeth Schalk Memorial Scholarship
Growing up, mental health was never a distant concept in my life. It was not something I learned about in a classroom or encountered only in passing. Instead, it was an ever-present reality that shaped my relationships, my understanding of the world, and ultimately, my aspirations for the future.
My mother and my aunt are both therapists, dedicating their lives to helping others navigate the often-turbulent waters of mental illness. Through them, I have witnessed firsthand the power of compassion, patience, and resilience in the face of adversity. While their professional work was always a topic of discussion at home, mental illness was not just something they worked with—it was something we lived with.
My father, a veteran, suffers from PTSD. His service to our country came at an unimaginable cost, one that he carries with him every day. Growing up, I saw the weight of his experiences manifest in ways I didn’t fully understand at the time—flashbacks, anxiety, emotional distance. As a child, I often wished I could take away his pain, to fix what was broken, but I quickly learned that healing was not so simple. His struggle taught me patience and the importance of creating a safe, understanding environment for those who need it. While I could not erase his past, I could be a source of stability and support in his present.
Beyond my family, I have watched some of my closest friends battle with severe mental health concerns. Depression, anxiety, eating disorders—each of these has taken its toll on the people I love. Perhaps the most difficult part of these experiences has been the helplessness I sometimes feel, wanting to do more, to say the right thing, to be the rock they need. My girlfriend, in particular, has faced devastating mental health struggles, and standing by her side has deepened my empathy and understanding of the complexities of mental illness. It has shown me that while I may not have all the answers, simply being there, listening without judgment, and offering unwavering support can make all the difference.
These experiences have profoundly shaped who I am and the path I wish to take. I strive to be a source of strength for those who need it, to be the person who listens, understands, and supports without hesitation. I know firsthand how isolating mental illness can feel, and I want to help bridge that gap—to remind people that they are not alone.
My future goals revolve around advocating for mental health awareness, reducing stigma, and providing support to those who are struggling. Whether through direct outreach, education, or simply continuing to be a steadfast presence in the lives of those around me, I am committed to making a difference.
This scholarship represents more than just financial assistance to me; it is an opportunity to further my education and expand my ability to support others. I want to learn, grow, and develop the skills necessary to contribute meaningfully to the field of mental health advocacy. My journey has taught me that while I cannot erase pain or hardship, I can offer understanding, patience, and unwavering support. And sometimes, that is enough to make a world of difference.

I have been fascinated by the process of building—watching a simple idea transform into a tangible structure. This passion led me to enroll in my high school’s Mill courses, where I developed a appreciation for craftsmanship and honed my skills in woodworking, carpentry, and construction. At the same time, I dedicated myself to athletics, pushing my physical and mental limits to become a stand-out competitor. The combination of my love for construction and the discipline I gained from sports has shaped my vision for the future. As I prepare to enter college to pursue a degree in Construction Management, my goal is to make a lasting impact on the world by creating structures that are not only functional and efficient but also sustainable and innovative.
One of the most fulfilling aspects of construction is knowing that the work I do will directly benefit others. Being a high-performing athlete requires intense physical training, early morning practices, and unwavering dedication. At the same time, excelling in my Mill courses demanded focus, precision, and countless hours of hands-on work. There were moments when exhaustion threatened to take over, and I questioned whether I could maintain such a demanding schedule.
Rather than allowing myself to be overwhelmed, I developed strong time management skills and an unshakable work ethic. I learned to prioritize tasks, set realistic goals, and push through moments of doubt with resilience. My experiences as an athlete taught me the value of perseverance, teamwork, and mental toughness—qualities that are just as essential in the construction industry. By applying these lessons to my craft, I was able to excel in both arenas, proving to myself that dedication and discipline could help me overcome any obstacle.
Looking ahead, I am eager to take the next step in my journey by pursuing higher education in Construction Management. It would allow me to focus on my studies, gain hands-on experience, and develop the skills necessary to become a leader in the construction industry. I am deeply committed to using my education to build a future where quality craftsmanship meets sustainability, and I am eager to make a positive difference through my work. Thank you for considering my application—I am excited about the possibility of bringing my passion for construction to new heights and making a lasting impact on the world.

Honoring Service Through Skilled Trades
Growing up, I watched my father serve our country with unwavering dedication as a U.S. Army veteran. His service was more than a uniform and a title—it was a testament to discipline, resilience, and a deep-rooted commitment to helping others. After his military career, he transitioned into the HVAC trade, carrying with him the same sense of duty and precision that defined his years of service. His journey has profoundly shaped my values, work ethic, and career aspirations, leading me to follow in his footsteps as an HVAC journeyman, with the goal of providing support to our nation's veterans and servicemen and women.
One of the most significant values I have inherited from my father’s military service is discipline. Whether it was waking up early to complete projects or ensuring that every task was executed with precision, he instilled in me the importance of diligence and accountability. In the trades, where safety, efficiency, and technical expertise are crucial, discipline ensures that every job is completed with excellence. The HVAC field demands problem-solving skills, adaptability, and a strong work ethic—traits I have absorbed by watching my father approach each project with the same determination he once applied to his military duties.
Additionally, my father’s service taught me the importance of teamwork and leadership. In the military, success is rarely an individual effort; it relies on collaboration, trust, and the ability to work under pressure. In the HVAC trade, teamwork is equally critical, whether troubleshooting complex systems or ensuring a safe and efficient work environment. From my father, I have learned that leadership is not just about giving direction but also about taking responsibility and supporting those around me. These qualities will serve me well in a career that requires both technical skill and strong interpersonal relationships.
Beyond the technical and ethical lessons, my father’s experience has fueled my desire to make a meaningful impact, particularly within the veteran community and underserved populations. Many veterans struggle with reintegration into civilian life, facing financial difficulties and limited job opportunities. Skilled trades offer a pathway to stability, and I want to be part of a movement that connects veterans with opportunities in HVAC and other essential fields. Whether through mentorship, hiring initiatives, or discounted services for veterans, I plan to use my career to give back to those who have sacrificed for our country.
The HVAC trade is more than just a career for me—it is a way to honor my father’s legacy and support those who have served. Through hard work, discipline, and a dedication to serving others, I hope to make a lasting impact, ensuring that veterans and underserved communities receive the respect, opportunities, and support they deserve. My journey is not just about following in my father’s footsteps; it is about carrying forward a tradition of service in a new and meaningful way.
Learner Mental Health Empowerment for Health Students Scholarship
The Importance of Mental Health and My Role as an Advocate
Mental health is the foundation of well-being, influencing how we think, feel, and navigate daily challenges. As a student, I recognize that academic success is only one part of the equation; mental wellness is just as critical. Growing up with a mother who is a therapist, I have seen firsthand how mental health affects individuals and families. Her private practice in our community has opened my eyes to the struggles many people face, as well as the power of support and therapy in creating positive change. This exposure has not only deepened my appreciation for mental health care but has also motivated me to become an advocate in my school and community.
One of the most valuable lessons I have learned from my mother is that mental health struggles do not discriminate—they affect people from all walks of life. The pressures of school, extracurricular activities, and personal challenges can weigh heavily on students, yet mental health is often overlooked or stigmatized. I have seen how stress, anxiety, and even depression impact my peers, sometimes leading them to suffer in silence. Knowing that I have a role in breaking that silence drives my passion for advocacy.
At school, I actively support younger students and peers who may be struggling. As a volunteer, I serve as a support person, offering a listening ear and encouraging a safe space where others feel comfortable expressing themselves. Many students, especially younger ones, hesitate to speak up about their feelings because they fear judgment or believe they should "handle it" on their own. By providing encouragement and validation, I help them understand that seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness.
Beyond one-on-one interactions, I strive to raise awareness about mental health by promoting open conversations. I believe that change begins with dialogue, so I make a conscious effort to share resources, discuss stress management techniques, and normalize conversations about mental health. Whether it’s checking in on a friend, encouraging mindfulness, or reinforcing positive coping strategies, I do my best to make mental health a priority in my community.
In addition to my school involvement, my mother’s work has given me opportunities to learn about professional mental health care. I have observed how she helps her clients, provides coping strategies, and fosters resilience in individuals facing challenges. These experiences inspire me to continue advocating for mental health, whether through peer support, education, or encouraging others to seek help when needed.
Mental health is important to me because it shapes not only academic performance but also overall quality of life. By promoting mental wellness in my school and community, I hope to make a meaningful impact—one that encourages others to prioritize their well-being and embrace the support available to them.

Strength Through Family: How My Upbringing Shaped My Future
Growing up in my family, I quickly learned that love, resilience, and adaptability are not just qualities—they are survival skills. My household was a mixture of personalities, backgrounds, and traditions, where patience and understanding were essential. While some might view a blended family as complicated, I see it as my foundation. It has shaped me into someone who embraces change, values relationships, and sees challenges as opportunities for growth.
One of the biggest lessons my family taught me was the power of perspective. As a child, I often struggled with feeling like I had to navigate different expectations, roles, and relationships. It wasn’t always easy, but through these experiences, I developed emotional intelligence, empathy, and a strong ability to communicate—skills that will serve me well no matter where my future leads.
The financial realities of my family also meant that I had to take on responsibilities early. Watching my mother work tirelessly to provide for multiple children showed me the value of perseverance and sacrifice. I took on a part-time job my junior year, learned to manage my time wisely, and understood the importance of setting goals. These experiences have instilled in me a deep appreciation for hard work and a commitment to making the most of every opportunity.
Although I am still exploring career paths, one thing is certain: I want to use my talents to help others. Whether I become a teacher, counselor, entrepreneur, or community leader, I know that my ability to connect with people from different backgrounds will allow me to make a meaningful impact. I have seen firsthand how a strong support system can change lives, and I hope to be part of that kind of positive change for others.
In my future, I envision creating opportunities for people who feel unheard or overlooked. Maybe that means mentoring students who, like me, have had to navigate complex family dynamics. Maybe it means working in a field where I can advocate for those who need a voice. Regardless of the path I take, I know that my upbringing has given me the tools to lead with compassion and purpose.
While some might think of a blended family as a challenge, I see it as my greatest advantage. It has taught me patience, responsibility, and the importance of lifting others up. No matter what career I choose, I will carry these lessons with me, using them to build a future where I can help others find strength in their own stories—just as I have found strength in mine.
Bob Gana Memorial Scholarship
Why I Would Like to Go to a Trade School
In a world where traditional four-year degrees are often emphasized as the primary path to success, I have chosen to pursue a trade school education because I believe in the power of skilled labor, hands-on learning, and the direct impact that technical careers have on our communities. Trade schools provide an efficient and practical way to gain expertise in a field that is not only in high demand but also aligns with my personal interests and career goals.
From a young age, I have been fascinated by the process of creating, building, and repairing. Whether it was working alongside my family on home improvement projects or taking shop classes in high school, I found satisfaction in working with my hands and seeing the tangible results of my efforts. Over time, I realized that a career in the trades would allow me to apply these skills in a meaningful way, contributing to industries that keep society running—construction, electrical work, plumbing, welding, and beyond.
One of the biggest reasons I want to attend a trade school is the direct and specialized training it offers. Unlike a traditional college, where students spend years studying a broad range of subjects that may not apply to their future careers, trade schools focus on hands-on experience and job-specific training. This means I will be able to enter the workforce more quickly, with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed. Additionally, the smaller class sizes and industry-experienced instructors create a more personalized learning environment, allowing students to gain real-world expertise rather than just theoretical knowledge.
Another factor that draws me to trade school is the financial advantage. Many college graduates leave school with significant debt, struggling to find employment in their chosen fields. Trade school, on the other hand, offers a more affordable education with a faster return on investment. Since skilled trades are in high demand, I am confident that I will find stable, well-paying employment upon graduation. This financial security is important to me, as I want to build a future where I can support myself and my family without the burden of overwhelming student loans.
Beyond financial and career benefits, I see trade school as a pathway to making a real difference in my community. Skilled workers are the backbone of our economy, responsible for the infrastructure, homes, and services we rely on every day. By mastering a trade, I will be contributing to the development and maintenance of essential systems, ensuring that people have access to safe housing, electricity, and other vital services. There is a deep sense of pride that comes with knowing my work will have a lasting impact.
Ultimately, I am choosing trade school because it aligns with my passion, provides a direct route to a fulfilling career, and offers stability in an ever-changing job market. I am eager to gain the skills necessary to excel in my chosen trade and to be part of a workforce that drives progress, innovation, and sustainability. Trade school is not just an education for me—it is the key to my future.

The Power of Perspective: The Boy in the Striped Pajamas
The transition of a book to film is often met with high expectations, as readers hope the essence of the story remains intact. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne is one such adaptation that deeply resonated with me, not just as a moving piece of literature but as a film that expanded my emotional and intellectual understanding of history, human connection, and perspective. This adaptation bridged the gap between reading and viewing by transforming the abstract emotions of the novel into visual storytelling, making the narrative even more hauntingly real.
I first read The Boy in the Striped Pajamas in middle school, and it left an unforgettable impression on me. The story follows Bruno, the young son of a Nazi commandant, who unknowingly befriends Shmuel, a Jewish boy imprisoned in Auschwitz. Bruno’s innocence, juxtaposed with the audience’s knowledge of the Holocaust, creates a narrative that is both heartbreaking and thought-provoking. Reading the book, I was struck by the power of perspective—how Bruno’s naive worldview painted a picture so vastly different from the grim reality the reader understands. The novel’s simple yet powerful prose forced me to see the tragedy through the eyes of a child, which made it all the more devastating.
When I watched the film adaptation, I was initially apprehensive about how well it would capture the novel’s emotional weight. However, the visual medium enhanced aspects of the story that the book could only suggest. Seeing the stark contrast between Bruno’s comfortable home life and the horrors on the other side of the fence made the divide between privilege and suffering even more palpable. The cinematography, with its muted tones and lingering shots of the barbed wire, heightened the tension and sadness in a way that mere words could not.
One of the most impactful moments in both the book and film is the devastating ending. In the novel, the final chapter leaves much to the reader’s imagination, which adds to the horror of Bruno’s fate. However, in the film, the visual confirmation of the tragic conclusion is gut-wrenching. This moment reinforced for me the power of visual storytelling in making historical events feel immediate and personal. While the book allowed me to internalize the emotions at my own pace, the film confronted me with the brutal reality, making it impossible to look away.
Ultimately, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas stands out as a book-to-film adaptation that remains true to the heart of the original story while enhancing its impact through visual storytelling. It bridged the gap between reading and viewing by transforming abstract emotions into undeniable realities. This adaptation did more than just bring a book to life—it deepened my understanding of history, human nature, and the consequences of blind hatred. The experience of both reading and watching this story solidified my belief in the importance of perspective, reminding me that empathy is often found in the most unexpected places.

These experiences have solidified my passion for construction management and engineering, where I aim to make a lasting impact by combining my leadership skills, work ethic, and commitment to service.
Academically, I have always strived for excellence. Balancing AP courses, maintaining a high GPA, and earning recognition for my achievements has prepared me for the rigorous demands of higher education. Football, however, has been just as instrumental in shaping my character. As a team captain, I’ve learned what it means to be a leader—how to inspire teammates, handle setbacks with grace, and never let obstacles dictate the outcome. The discipline and determination I’ve developed through athletics directly translate to my future career, where I plan to push myself to new heights and encourage others to do the same.
Beyond personal ambition, mentorship has played a key role in my journey, and I am passionate about paying it forward. Whether helping younger players refine their skills or tutoring peers academically, I understand the importance of lifting others up. In my future career, I aim to continue this mentorship, whether by guiding new professionals, supporting veterans transitioning to civilian careers, or leading community initiatives.

Passage from Plato’s The Republic (Book VII: The Allegory of the Cave):
"And if he is compelled to look straight at the light, will he not have a pain in his eyes which will make him turn away to take refuge in the objects of vision which he can see, and which he will conceive to be in reality clearer than the things which are now being shown to him?"
Essay:
Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, from The Republic, explores the nature of enlightenment, ignorance, and the difficulty of transcending comfortable illusions. In this passage, Plato describes the pain experienced by a prisoner who has lived in darkness when he is suddenly exposed to light. This allegory serves as a metaphor for intellectual and philosophical awakening—the discomfort that comes with challenging long-held beliefs and the human tendency to retreat into the familiar rather than confront uncomfortable truths.
At the heart of this passage is the notion that enlightenment is not a passive process but an arduous journey fraught with resistance. The prisoner’s initial reaction—turning away from the light—illustrates the natural human response to discomfort when confronted with new ideas. This resistance is not simply an aversion to pain but a psychological defense mechanism against the unknown. Just as eyes accustomed to darkness struggle with sudden brightness, minds conditioned by limited perspectives struggle when exposed to profound truths. This suggests that ignorance is not merely the absence of knowledge but an active state of self-imposed blindness. The allegory thereby serves as a warning against intellectual complacency; growth requires the courage to endure temporary discomfort for the sake of greater understanding.
Furthermore, Plato’s passage underscores the idea that truth is often met with hostility. The prisoner’s inclination to retreat into the shadows symbolizes how individuals cling to conventional wisdom and societal norms even when faced with contradictory evidence. In modern contexts, this is evident in the resistance to scientific discoveries, social progress, and philosophical shifts. Whether it be historical shifts in understanding the cosmos or societal changes regarding justice and equality, there is always an initial reluctance to abandon the familiar for the sake of progress. Plato’s message, then, is that enlightenment requires not only exposure to truth but also the willingness to embrace it despite the initial discomfort.
Another profound implication of this passage is the ethical responsibility of those who have attained enlightenment. The allegory does not merely describe an individual’s intellectual journey but also hints at the philosopher’s duty to guide others out of the cave. However, Plato suggests that those who have not yet seen the light will resist and even resent those who attempt to reveal it. This aligns with the historical pattern of resistance faced by visionaries, reformers, and thinkers throughout history. From Socrates to Galileo to contemporary figures challenging societal norms, those who introduce new paradigms often face persecution. This further reinforces Plato’s notion that truth is not easily accepted; it demands courage from both the seeker and the teacher.
The passage also speaks to the transformative power of education. True learning, according to Plato, is not merely the accumulation of facts but the reorientation of the soul toward higher realities. This is why the process of enlightenment is depicted as painful—it requires individuals to dismantle preconceived notions and reconstruct their understanding of the world. In the context of higher education, this underscores the value of critical thinking and the importance of challenging assumptions. A true education is not about memorizing information but about developing the ability to question, analyze, and seek truth beyond superficial appearances.
Ultimately, this passage from The Republic is a timeless reflection on the human condition. It illustrates the psychological barriers to enlightenment, the resistance truth often encounters, the ethical duty of the enlightened, and the transformative nature of education. Plato compels us to ask: Are we willing to endure discomfort in pursuit of truth, or will we, like the prisoners in the cave, retreat into the shadows of ignorance? This question remains as relevant today as it was in ancient Greece, urging each of us to confront our own intellectual and philosophical limitations with courage and determination.
In pursuing this scholarship, I seek to embody the principles outlined in Plato’s allegory. Education, for me, is the path out of the cave—the means through which I can challenge my own limitations and contribute to a world that values truth over illusion. While the journey may be difficult, the pursuit of knowledge is worth every moment of discomfort, for it is only by stepping into the light that we can truly see.

The Cinematic Journey Through Darkness and Enlightenment
Some films entertain, some inspire, and a rare few transform the way we perceive the world. Apocalypse Now is one such film for me. More than just a war movie, it is a descent into the depths of human nature, a visual and psychological odyssey that echoes Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness. Its impact on me has been profound, challenging my understanding of morality, leadership, and the cost of ambition. Through its haunting imagery, complex characters, and unsettling themes, Apocalypse Now has shaped the way I see the world and my role in it.
At its core, Apocalypse Now is a meditation on the thin line between civilization and savagery. Captain Willard’s journey up the river mirrors the journey of self-discovery we all take at some point in life. Each stop along his path reveals another layer of the human psyche—fear, power, madness, and the consequences of unchecked authority. The film forces viewers to question the nature of right and wrong, showing that in extreme circumstances, even the most well-intentioned individuals can lose their moral compass. This idea resonated deeply with me, as I’ve always been fascinated by the psychological forces that drive human behavior. It reinforced my belief that understanding the complexities of the human mind is crucial, whether in leadership, personal relationships, or global affairs.
One of the film’s most powerful aspects is its portrayal of leadership. Colonel Kurtz, a once-brilliant officer who descends into madness, represents both the dangers and the allure of absolute power. His monologues, filled with poetic yet chilling wisdom, forced me to reconsider traditional notions of leadership. Is a leader defined by their adherence to rules, or by their ability to achieve results at any cost? I have often found myself reflecting on this question in my own experiences, particularly in team settings where decision-making is difficult. Watching Apocalypse Now helped me understand that true leadership requires balance—strength without tyranny, vision without arrogance.
The film’s cinematography and use of sound also played a crucial role in shaping my perception of storytelling and the power of art. The contrast between beauty and horror—the vibrant sunsets over the jungle juxtaposed with the chaos of war—mirrors the contradictions within humanity itself. The famous scene of helicopters attacking a village to the triumphant sound of Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries is both awe-inspiring and deeply unsettling. It showed me that perspective is everything; what is glorious to one may be terrifying to another. This lesson extends far beyond cinema, influencing the way I approach conflicts, discussions, and even my aspirations.
Perhaps the greatest impact Apocalypse Now has had on me is its ability to challenge my assumptions. Like Willard, I have realized that the journey toward understanding—whether of the world, of others, or of oneself—is never straightforward. It is filled with contradictions, moral dilemmas, and unexpected revelations. The film has encouraged me to approach life with curiosity and critical thinking, to question rather than accept, and to strive for wisdom rather than simple answers.
As I continue my academic journey, I plan to take these lessons with me. Whether in studying history, psychology, or leadership, I will seek to understand the deeper forces at play. I hope to apply the insights I have gained from Apocalypse Now to my own life, using them to become a more thoughtful, responsible, and perceptive individual. In the end, the film is not just about war or madness—it is about the struggle to make sense of a world that often seems incomprehensible. And in that struggle, I have found both purpose and direction.

The Gift of Belief
Great teachers do more than instruct; they shape lives, instill confidence, and open doors to new ways of thinking. For me, that teacher was Coach Jerimi Calip. He was more than my communication and speech teacher—he was a mentor, a role model, and a guide who transformed the way I interact with the world. Through his lessons in communication, respect, and belief in others, Coach Calip fundamentally changed how I approach life.
Before stepping into his classroom, I saw communication as a skill of quick wit and clever responses. I believed that speaking well meant having the best argument or the most compelling words. But Coach Calip introduced me to something far more powerful—listening. He taught me that real communication isn’t about preparing my next response while the other person is still talking. Instead, it’s about truly hearing—understanding another person’s message, their emotions, and their experiences. “Listen quietly,” he would say, “and hear, not just to reply, but to understand.” That simple yet profound shift in mindset changed how I engage with the world.
Coach Calip didn’t just teach a subject; he created a space where his students felt valued. He held space for each of us, allowing our voices to matter. In his classroom, every student had a place—regardless of background, ability, or confidence level. He respected education, not as a rigid institution, but as a living, breathing exchange of ideas and growth. It was through his belief in every student, including me, that I learned one of the greatest lessons of my life: the power of believing in others.
There were times in high school when doubt crept in—about my abilities, my goals, and whether I had what it took to succeed. But Coach Calip never wavered in his belief in me, even when I struggled to believe in myself. He saw potential before I did. He encouraged me to push beyond my comfort zone, to use my voice not just in speech class, but in life. His confidence in me became a foundation for my own self-belief, a lesson that I now carry forward in everything I do.
Because of him, I don’t just aim to succeed for myself—I aim to uplift those around me. Whether in academics, athletics, or personal relationships, I strive to listen, to understand, and to give others the same encouragement he gave me. His impact is woven into my goals, my interactions, and the way I treat people. The legacy of a great teacher isn’t just in the knowledge they impart, but in the way they shape who their students become.
As I pursue my education, I do so with the lessons of Coach Calip guiding me. I will listen to understand, not just to reply. I will hold space for others. And most importantly, I will believe—not only in myself but in the potential of those around me. Because, as he showed me, sometimes the greatest gift you can give another person is simply believing in them.
Matthew E. Minor Memorial Scholarship
Throughout my high school career, I have taken a proactive role in fostering a safe and inclusive environment for my peers. As a peer leader, I am not only a source of guidance but also a safe person for students to approach when they need support. I lead by example, demonstrating kindness and courtesy in every interaction. I believe that small acts of respect can create ripples of positivity, and I strive to be a role model for my peers.
One of my core principles is refusing to turn a blind eye to issues that affect my school community. When I witness bullying—whether in-person or online—I address it directly. This can mean stepping in to support a victim, reporting incidents to trusted adults, or simply offering a listening ear to someone who feels alone. I take action because I know that in moments of vulnerability, having even one person stand up can make a difference.
My commitment to keeping youth safe extends beyond the school walls. Online spaces, such as games, Discord servers, and chat forums, have become breeding grounds for cyberbullying, often hidden from adult supervision. I have made it my responsibility to recognize when conversations cross the line from playful banter to harmful behavior. When I see this happening, I remove myself from the situation. While this might seem like a passive approach, I have found it to be an effective way to lead by example. Often, my friends will reach out afterward, expressing that they too felt uncomfortable and chose to leave. This silent stand against cyberbullying creates a culture where people understand that cruelty and harassment are not acceptable, even in the anonymity of the digital world.
Financially, pursuing higher education presents a significant challenge for my family and me. Despite my dedication to academics, leadership, and community service, the cost of college remains a daunting obstacle. My family has always worked hard, but the financial burden of tuition, housing, and other expenses requires additional support. This scholarship would not only alleviate some of this stress but also allow me to fully dedicate myself to my studies and leadership initiatives without the constant worry of financial strain.
Higher education is an opportunity for me to expand my impact. I plan to continue my efforts in advocating for youth safety, both in person and online, by promoting awareness and encouraging stronger protections against bullying. I want to work with school administrators and policymakers to create better systems of intervention and support for students facing harassment. Additionally, I aim to use my education to develop digital safety programs that empower young people to recognize and combat cyberbullying in their online spaces.
Receiving this scholarship would be more than just financial assistance—it would be an investment in my ability to make meaningful changes in my community and beyond. With the opportunity to pursue higher education, I will continue to champion the safety and well-being of youth, ensuring that every student has the support they need to thrive both online and in the real world.
Native Heritage Scholarship
Storytelling has always been a powerful tradition in Native American culture, serving as a bridge between generations, preserving history, and imparting wisdom. Growing up with a deep connection to my Choctaw and Cherokee heritage from the plains of Oklahoma, I have learned the importance of resilience, strength, and purpose through the stories of my family. One of the most impactful narratives in my life is not just a spoken story but one that unfolded before my eyes—the life of my grandfather.
My grandfather, who is almost full Cherokee, has been a pillar of strength and wisdom in my family. He spent his life working the land, raising his family, and providing for those he loved while setting aside his own material desires. He never sought wealth, status, or excess; instead, he found fulfillment in the well-being of his family and the simple beauty of nature. From the time I was young, I would watch him rise before the sun, his hands weathered but steady as he tilled the soil, repaired fences, or cared for livestock. The land was more than a means of survival for him—it was a sacred responsibility, a connection to our ancestors who had once walked these same plains with the same reverence and determination.
Through his example, I learned that true success is not measured by what we own, but by what we give to others and the values we uphold. His resilience in the face of hardship, his commitment to family, and his unwavering sense of duty have profoundly shaped my own goals. His story has taught me to remain strong and determined, even when obstacles arise. Just as he worked tirelessly to provide a better life for his family, I am determined to pursue my dreams with the same steadfast dedication, ensuring that my success is not just for me, but for those I hold dear.
Being of mixed heritage—both Native American and European descent—has given me a unique perspective on identity and belonging. While society sometimes tries to categorize people into rigid boxes, I have embraced every part of who I am. My Native roots ground me in tradition, resilience, and community, while my European lineage reminds me of the importance of adaptability and perseverance. I am proud of my ancestry, and I carry both legacies with me as I carve out my own path in life.
Education is the key to transforming dreams into reality. With the support of this scholarship, I will be able to further my studies and work towards a future that honors my heritage while creating new opportunities for myself and my family. I aspire to pursue a career that enables me to give back to my community, whether through leadership, service, or mentorship. Just as my grandfather worked the land to provide, I seek to cultivate knowledge and opportunities that will empower others.
In Native American culture, storytelling is not just about words—it is about legacy. My grandfather’s life is a story of resilience, selflessness, and strength, and it is one that continues to inspire me every day. His legacy fuels my determination to succeed, reminding me that no matter how difficult the journey, perseverance and purpose will always lead the way. By carrying forward the lessons of my ancestors, I honor my past while forging a brighter future.

Building a Better Future: My Commitment to Community Service
Community service is more than just an obligation; it is a responsibility, an opportunity, and a way to create meaningful change. To me, community service means recognizing the needs of others, taking action, and dedicating my skills and time to improve the lives of those around me. It is about making a lasting impact—not just offering temporary aid but developing sustainable solutions that empower individuals and communities to thrive.
As I pursue my education and career, I plan to give back to my community through three key avenues: construction, leadership, and mentoring. These areas align with my passions and strengths, and they provide direct, tangible benefits to those in need. My goal is to address pressing community issues, such as inadequate housing, lack of resources for young people, and limited access to skilled mentorship, by actively working toward practical and impactful solutions.
One of the most fundamental ways I plan to give back is through construction. Infrastructure plays a crucial role in a community’s well-being, yet many neighborhoods suffer from neglected housing, outdated facilities, or a lack of safe communal spaces. By engaging in construction projects, I aim to contribute to the physical foundation of my community—building and repairing homes, recreational areas, and essential structures that provide security and stability for families. Through hands-on work and collaboration with local organizations, I will help create environments that foster growth, safety, and unity.
Beyond physical improvements, strong leadership is essential for positive change. I believe that effective leadership involves not only guiding others but also listening, learning, and working alongside members of the community to implement solutions. I plan to use my leadership skills to organize volunteer efforts, advocate for necessary resources, and encourage civic engagement. By taking initiative, I can help connect people to opportunities, promote teamwork, and ensure that projects are carried out efficiently and with purpose.
Mentoring is another crucial way I intend to make a difference. As someone who has benefited from the guidance of mentors, I understand the value of having someone who believes in your potential and is willing to invest in your success. Failure is often viewed as an endpoint, a sign that we have reached the limits of our ability. However, I have learned that failure is not an end—it is an opportunity for growth, resilience, and self-discovery. Throughout my academic and athletic journey, I have repeatedly fallen short of my goal for acknowledgment of my skills, both in the classroom and on the field. Despite my dedication, discipline, and relentless effort, the recognition I sought often did not come. Yet, in the process of striving for validation from others, I discovered something far more meaningful: the ability to define success on my own terms.
From an early age, I poured my energy into my studies and sports, always striving to be the best version of myself. I believed that hard work and determination would naturally lead to acknowledgment—grades that reflected my academic commitment, awards that validated my efforts on the field, and words of praise that reinforced my contributions. However, reality often fell short of my expectations. I would study tirelessly for a test, only to receive a grade that did not mirror my efforts. I would give everything I had in practice and games, yet see teammates recognized while my contributions went unnoticed. Time and time again, I felt the sting of falling short in the eyes of others.
Initially, this lack of recognition was disheartening. I questioned whether my efforts were in vain and if I would ever receive the validation I longed for. But instead of allowing discouragement to define me, I used it as fuel to push myself even harder. I committed to higher standards—not for the sake of external acknowledgment, but for my own sense of accomplishment. I challenged myself academically, not to impress teachers or peers, but to expand my knowledge and sharpen my intellect. I trained harder in my sport, not to earn applause, but to master my craft and contribute to my team’s success in ways that statistics could not measure.
Over time, my perspective on success began to shift. I realized that true achievement is not dictated by outside recognition but by the fulfillment and joy found within. I stopped measuring my worth by the acknowledgment of others and started finding pride in my own growth and progress. The moment I detached my self-worth from external validation, I found an unwavering sense of confidence and purpose.
This mindset shift not only helped me overcome my feelings of inadequacy but also allowed me to redefine success on my own terms. Today, I take pride in my academic achievements because they reflect my commitment to learning. I take joy in my athletic performance because I know I have given my all, regardless of whether others take notice. Most importantly, I have cultivated resilience, self-motivation, and an unshakable belief in myself—qualities that will serve me well far beyond the classroom or the field.
In seeking recognition, I found something greater: a deep, intrinsic motivation that drives me to be my best, not for accolades, but for personal fulfillment. I have learned that success is not measured by trophies or titles, but by the satisfaction of knowing I have pushed myself to grow and excel. And in that realization, I have found the greatest victory of all.

Wicked Fan Scholarship
Why I Am a Fan of WICKED
Engineering and construction are fields that require creativity, problem-solving, and the ability to bring ambitious ideas to life. I have always been fascinated by how structures are built, how blueprints evolve into towering skyscrapers, and how bridges connect communities. This passion for engineering and construction is exactly why WICKED resonates so deeply with me. The movie, much like the Broadway musical it is based on, is a story of transformation, vision, and challenging conventional narratives—concepts that parallel my own journey toward a career in engineering and construction.
One of the most compelling aspects of WICKED is its theme of defying expectations. The story reimagines The Wizard of Oz, showing that things are not always as they seem. This is something I see in engineering as well. What appears to be a simple bridge or a sleek building is actually a feat of precise calculations, innovative materials, and structural ingenuity. Just as Elphaba, the main character, defies the expectations placed upon her, I strive to challenge the limits of construction and engineering by thinking beyond traditional designs and embracing new technologies like sustainable building materials and smart infrastructure.
The set design and special effects in WICKED are another reason I admire the movie. The production itself is an engineering marvel, using advanced stage mechanics, lighting, and set transitions to create a visually stunning experience. Watching scenes like Elphaba's gravity-defying "Defying Gravity" performance reminds me of the physics behind suspension bridges or the aerodynamic considerations in constructing skyscrapers. The ability to blend art with engineering is what makes structures not only functional but also awe-inspiring. I want to be part of that—creating buildings and infrastructure that are not just useful but also beautifully designed, much like how WICKED brings its world to life through stagecraft.
Additionally, WICKED carries a strong message about resilience and overcoming obstacles. Elphaba faces discrimination, doubt, and adversity but refuses to let those challenges define her. This resonates with my journey in pursuing engineering. There have been moments when I have faced setbacks, whether struggling with complex physics problems or learning to work effectively in team projects. However, I have always pushed forward, just like Elphaba. Engineering, like life, requires perseverance—projects don’t always go as planned, blueprints must be revised, and challenges must be tackled head-on.
Finally, WICKED is a story of innovation—of seeing things differently and questioning the status quo. That mindset is essential in construction and engineering. The world needs more sustainable buildings, better infrastructure, and safer designs. Like WICKED, I believe in reimagining what is possible and creating something new. My goal is to pursue a career where I can combine creativity with technical skills to build the future, just as WICKED reimagines a classic story in a bold and imaginative way.
In the end, WICKED is more than just a movie for me—it is an inspiration. It reminds me that the greatest innovations come from challenging norms, thinking differently, and persevering against obstacles. That is exactly the kind of mindset I plan to bring to my career in engineering and construction.

Each transition came with its own set of challenges—leaving friends behind, adjusting to different expectations, and learning to rebuild a sense of home wherever we landed. But through these experiences, I developed resilience, adaptability, and a deep appreciation for structure—both in life and in the physical world around me. Moving from one military base to another, I found comfort in the consistency of construction; no matter where we went, the buildings followed the same principles, the same foundations.
One pivotal moment in my life was watching my father, a veteran, transition into civilian life. The uncertainty and challenges he faced taught me the importance of stability, leadership, and planning for the future—values that align perfectly with construction management. I learned that success is not just about overcoming obstacles but about using them as stepping stones. These lessons have fueled my drive to excel academically and professionally, ensuring that I build not only structures but also a meaningful career that contributes to my community.

Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
Breaking the Silence: My Journey Toward Mental Health Advocacy
Growing up with a mother who is a therapist working with severely mentally ill individuals, I have been exposed to the raw realities of mental health struggles from an early age. I have witnessed the weight of stigma, the barriers to treatment, and the profound impact mental illness can have on individuals and families. These experiences have not only shaped my understanding of the world but have also influenced my goals, relationships, and personal mission—to become an advocate for mental health awareness and early intervention.
Through my mother’s work, I have seen the struggles her clients face, not just in managing their illnesses but in navigating a world that often misunderstands or rejects them. Many of these individuals suffer from highly stigmatized disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or severe depression. Their conditions are frequently mischaracterized, leading to fear rather than compassion. This has fueled my passion to educate others, to humanize these individuals, and to help create a society where seeking mental health treatment is met with support rather than shame.
One of the most devastating consequences of untreated mental illness is incarceration. Too often, individuals who need psychiatric care end up in the criminal justice system instead. They are punished rather than treated, reinforcing a cycle that could have been broken with early intervention and accessible resources. I want to be part of the solution by advocating for policies that prioritize mental health care over incarceration, ensuring that individuals receive the support they need before they reach a crisis point.
My passion for mental health advocacy has also shaped my relationships. I have learned to approach others with empathy and an open mind, recognizing that struggles are not always visible. I strive to create a safe space for those around me, whether by offering support to a friend or encouraging someone to seek help. Understanding the importance of mental well-being has deepened my connections with others and reinforced my belief that no one should have to suffer in silence.
Ultimately, my experiences have solidified my commitment to breaking the stigma surrounding mental illness and ensuring that individuals receive help before their conditions escalate. I plan to dedicate my future to mental health advocacy, whether through policy reform, community outreach, or direct support for those in need. I believe that change begins with awareness, and I am determined to be a voice for those who have been silenced by stigma and fear.
This is not just a career goal for me—it is a personal mission. The world needs more advocates willing to challenge outdated perceptions and push for real, systemic change. I am ready to be one of them.

Brotherhood in Arms: A Legacy of Strength
The military is often defined by discipline, resilience, and sacrifice, but for my grandfather, uncle, and father, it was also defined by an unbreakable bond of brotherhood. Three generations of my family have served in the U.S. Army—my grandfather as a combat engineer, my uncle in Special Forces, and my father as a Cavalry Scout. While their roles and experiences differed, one thing remained constant: the camaraderie they shared with their brothers in arms.
Growing up, I listened to their stories, often filled with humor that masked the hardships they endured. They told tales of late-night pranks in the barracks, nicknames earned through both skill and sheer misfortune, and moments of unexpected laughter in the most unthinkable conditions. To an outsider, some of these stories might seem trivial—inside jokes about rations, endless complaints about sand getting into everything, or competitions over who had the worst sleeping conditions. But I learned early on that these seemingly silly moments were more than just entertainment; they were survival.
Amidst the chaos of war, the weight of loss, and the strain of physical and mental scars, my grandfather, uncle, and father clung to their bonds with their fellow soldiers. That camaraderie was what carried them forward through the darkest days. It was a lifeline that helped them bear witness to tragedy yet find the strength to keep going. It was the reason they continued to serve, despite the cost.
Their stories instilled in me a deep respect for perseverance and unity. I admire their ability to endure—through battles both external and internal—because they knew they were never alone. Their strength has shaped the way I approach challenges in my own life. No matter how difficult things get, I remind myself of their resilience, their ability to laugh in the face of adversity, and their unwavering commitment to those who stood beside them.
This scholarship would help me continue the legacy of perseverance that my family has embodied. While I may not wear a uniform, I strive to carry forward the values they have instilled in me—loyalty, strength, and the understanding that no one succeeds alone. Just as my grandfather, uncle, and father leaned on their brothers in arms, I hope to build my own community of support as I pursue my education and future goals. Their stories remind me that even in the hardest moments, we find light through the people who stand beside us.

Navigating Challenges and Embracing Patriotism: My Experience as the Child of a Military Parent
Growing up as the child of a U.S. Army veteran, I have always understood that my family’s story is deeply intertwined with the sacrifices and resilience required of military service. My father’s multiple deployments and the challenges he faced upon his return have shaped not only my perspective on life but also my character and values.
My father’s dedication to the Army was unwavering, even as the demands of service often required him to be away from home. Each deployment brought a mix of pride and uncertainty into our household. I was proud of his service and his courage but also aware of the sacrifices being made—not just by him but by our entire family. The time apart was difficult, and the realities of military life taught me early on the importance of flexibility, perseverance, and teamwork.
When my father was awarded disabled veteran status due to the wounds he sustained, my understanding of his sacrifices deepened. His injuries, both seen and unseen, were reminders of the toll military service takes. Adjusting to life after his service meant navigating his physical and emotional recovery, supporting him through difficult times, and learning to adapt to new challenges as a family. Witnessing his resilience inspired me to develop my own strength and determination.
Living with a disabled veteran has also instilled in me an unshakable sense of patriotism. I have seen firsthand the price of protecting freedom and the importance of honoring those who serve. My father’s struggles have made me deeply appreciative of the sacrifices made by service members and their families. They have also motivated me to advocate for greater awareness and support for veterans, ensuring their service is recognized and their needs are met.
Through this experience, I have gained a profound respect for the values the military represents—commitment, service, and honor. These values have guided me in my own life, shaping my ambitions and fostering my desire to give back to my community. Whether it’s volunteering for local initiatives or mentoring younger students, I strive to embody the spirit of service that I have witnessed in my father.
In reflecting on my journey as the child of a military parent, I recognize that the challenges I’ve faced have been integral to my growth. My father’s service and sacrifices have shaped my character, inspired my patriotism, and fueled my unwavering support for the military. As I pursue my college education, I carry these lessons with me, determined to honor his legacy by striving to make a positive impact on the world around me.
Nickels Student Athlete Scholarship
The Challenges and Lessons of Being a High School Student-Athlete
Balancing the roles of a student and athlete has been one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences of my life. Playing varsity football for four years while maintaining a 4.0 GPA required more than just talent; it demanded discipline, resilience, and a commitment to excellence. Achieving recognition as an All-American and All-League First Team honoree reflects the rewards of this hard work, but the road to success was filled with valuable lessons learned through overcoming challenges.
One of the biggest challenges was time management. Between early morning practices, evening games, and long hours of studying, my days were packed. I quickly realized the importance of prioritizing tasks and using my time wisely. Every minute mattered, whether it was completing assignments during lunch breaks or reviewing playbooks late at night. This balancing act taught me how to manage multiple responsibilities effectively, a skill I know will serve me well throughout life. Balance is very important to me. I enjoy athletics, but also am dedicated to my family and enjoy quality time with friends and my girlfriend.
Football also taught me how to handle adversity. Injuries, tough losses, and moments of self-doubt tested my mental strength. There were times when I questioned if I could balance the demands of high-level competition with academic rigor, but those moments helped me grow. I learned that setbacks are not failures but opportunities to improve. Resilience became my greatest tool, both on the field and in the classroom.
Teamwork and leadership were equally important lessons. Football is a sport that requires everyone to work together toward a common goal. As a team captain, I learned how to motivate others, foster a sense of unity, and lead by example. These skills translated into my academic life, where collaboration and communication became just as essential.
Perhaps the greatest lesson football taught me was the value of hard work and perseverance. Success as an All-American and All-League First Team player didn’t come from talent alone but from years of practice, dedication, and focus. That same mindset drove my academic achievements and shaped me into a well-rounded individual.
Being a student-athlete has prepared me for the challenges of life beyond high school. It taught me how to strive for excellence, face adversity head-on, and embrace teamwork. These lessons will guide me as I continue my academic and athletic journey, determined to make an impact both on and off the field.

My athletic journey has been a cornerstone of my personal development, shaping my character, work ethic, and aspirations. Football, a sport I have dedicated four years to as a varsity athlete, has provided me with lessons that extend far beyond the field. From early morning practices to late-night study sessions, balancing academics and athletics has instilled in me a relentless drive and an appreciation for discipline, teamwork, and perseverance.
Earning high academic honors, including maintaining a 4.0 GPA, has been one of my proudest achievements alongside my accolades in football. As an All-American and All-League First Team honoree, I have experienced the rewards of hard work and the importance of setting high standards. These achievements, however, are not solely individual triumphs; they are the result of a collective effort involving coaches, teammates, and a supportive community. This understanding has fueled my desire to make a positive impact on others, just as others have done for me.
Football has taught me that true leadership is about serving others and uplifting those around you. On the field, I have strived to lead by example—whether that meant putting in extra reps during practice, encouraging my teammates after a tough loss, or maintaining a positive attitude in the face of adversity. Off the field, I have applied these same principles to my academic and personal life, mentoring younger students and athletes by sharing strategies for time management, study habits, and goal setting.
My journey has also deepened my empathy and resilience. Football is a sport of highs and lows, and learning to navigate challenges has prepared me to face life’s uncertainties with grit and determination. I have come to see challenges not as obstacles but as opportunities for growth—a mindset I aim to inspire in others. Whether it’s helping a teammate recover from an injury or encouraging a peer to push through academic struggles, I am committed to fostering a culture of support and perseverance.
Looking ahead, I aspire to use my experiences to mentor and inspire others, particularly young athletes who face the same pressures and opportunities I have encountered. I want to show them that it is possible to excel both academically and athletically, that success is built on hard work and integrity, and that they, too, can make a difference in their communities. Through my actions and words, I hope to leave a legacy of resilience, leadership, and service that extends far beyond the football field.

Anthony Bruder Memorial Scholarship
From the moment I first held a football at the age of four, I knew it would become more than just a game to me—it would shape the person I am today. Over the years, football has been my passion, my teacher, and my constant source of growth. My journey from a young, eager player to a three-year captain of my high school varsity team has instilled in me critical skills and values that I carry both on and off the field.
Being captain for three consecutive years was not just a title—it was a responsibility that required leadership, resilience, and a deep sense of accountability. As a leader, I learned to inspire and motivate my teammates to perform at their best, not only during victories but also in the face of challenges. I became a source of encouragement when the scoreboard wasn’t in our favor and a strategist who could analyze the game and adapt under pressure. These moments solidified my critical thinking skills, as I had to make quick, calculated decisions to ensure our team stayed united and focused on our goals.
Football has also nurtured my love for mentoring. As captain, I often worked with younger athletes, guiding them through the complexities of the sport and helping them develop their skills and confidence. I vividly remember seeing the spark of realization in a younger player’s eyes when I showed him a new technique or encouraged him after a tough practice. Those experiences fueled my desire to not only excel as a player but also to inspire others to find their potential, both on and off the field.
Through football, I’ve learned that leadership is not about being the loudest voice in the room but about earning respect through actions, empathy, and consistency. Whether it was stepping up during crucial moments in a game or creating a supportive environment where every teammate felt valued, these experiences have prepared me to face challenges with determination and grace.
Football has given me more than just athletic achievements—it has shaped my character, taught me discipline, and sparked my passion for mentoring the next generation of athletes. This scholarship would provide me the opportunity to further my education and continue building on the foundation football has given me, allowing me to inspire others to pursue their goals with the same dedication that has driven me throughout my journey.
I am thankful for all my successes as well as my failures, as they both helped to shape the man I am today.
