I want to join The nursing field because my dad was sick with congestion heart failure. He was diagnosed when I was one. I grew up with a knowledge of medicine because I helped him when he was able to come home from the hospital. He taught me everything from his medications to how to change his dressing from his mechanical heart. My dad was the first in the Tri-state area to receive a mechanical heart after his first transplant failed. He then went under another transplant when another heart was available. He also went into kidney failure and was place on dialysis. I learned his schedule and helped after his appointments. He also had a couple stroke one of which gave him a brain bleed and caused him to have seizures. I learned how to handle his seizures and what medication to give him. He is the one person who has given me the courage to join the health field. Becoming a nurse is my biggest dream to help more people like my dad who are sick and I need of someone to help them. Some people need someone to rely on when they’re sick. Some people don’t have a support system that can help in their time of need and I want to be able to help those who don’t. I wanna help people like my dad that was sent to a hospital far from their families who’s are not able to visit them in the hospital. I wanna be the person that they can rely on and give an open ear to someone who just need someone to talk to in their weakest point. I want to get my RN and to work in a hospital to help people who need someone by their side and in their time of need. I am on track to get my CNA June 3rd. I am a student at Sullivan county Boces in the health occupations program which gives students an opportunity to get their CNA’s and other health certification's. During my time in boces we have a clinical period where I spent my time in nursing homes helping to care for the elderly patients who aren’t able to help themselves with their daily tasks. I have gotten my certification to be a CNA. This has shown me that you have to have the heart and mind to become apart of the health field. These experiences have set the groundwork for my future in the health field.

I am a bisexual female. I love to help our community as often as I can. I do see myself as someone who loves to help the community. I am going to major in nursing. I plan to achieve my bachelor’s in nursing as well. This scholarship will help me fund my tuition to Keuka college where I plan on achieving my bachelor’s. I come from a poor family in a poor neighborhood. Many of the people who I know haven’t been able to get into college due to the fact they can not afford it. I will be the first person in my family to get into college and get my bachelor’s. I will also become the first nurse in my family.I am the only one who is funding my schooling as my mom is a single mom now. My dad passed this January from heart disease and other health complications. He fought my entire life with heart failure and has given me a reason to get into the health field. He is the reason I want to be a nurse and help others like him who aren’t able to be with their families in the time they are sick. Helping sick people has become apart of who I am as a person. Becoming a nurse has been a dream of mine ever since I was little and able to understand the sick people need someone to rely on. Some people don’t have a support system and becoming a nurse will help those in hospitals and other places have that support. I love to learn about people’s struggles and stories to be able to help them in the best way I know how. Some people just need someone to talk too and to listen to their needs and problems. I feel strongly as though I am one of those people. Having a sick dad has taught me that every one needs someone for at least a moment to help them in their time of need. My dad was one of the strongest people I know. He fought a long battle with heart failure for most of my life as he got sick when I was one. He taught me most of what I know about the health field due to him being in and out the hospital. Being apart of the LGBTQ+ community has made me more resilient to backlash and criticism but I don’t let it define me as a person.
