    Redefining Victory Scholarship
For me, success doesn't just look like recognition or accolades. While those are great, where I would feel the most achieved and content with my success is making a difference in someone's life. I define success as a stroke survivor able to move and complete daily tasks with a product I designed. Success to me is knowing that I helped make someone smile, regain their confidence, and feel human again. Growing up, I witnessed firsthand through my grandfather how a stroke can change your life in a split second. My grandfather, a person who full of life and energy, constantly moving and smiling, one day had his independence taken from him completely—the culprit: a massive stroke that left him paralyzed on the entire left side of his body. Watching him struggle and adjust to his disability heavily influenced my education and career path. Engineering and healthcare are similar in that they are both driven by innovation. Biomedical engineering is a collaboration between engineering and healthcare, and it is the perfect place to start. For people like my grandfather, I seek to invent a neuro-adaptive aid for those who face physical limitations due to stroke. My approach to creating this change would begin by gathering research, collaborating with neurologists and rehabilitation specialists, as well as other engineers, to develop a line of devices that combines biomechanical sensors, artificial intelligence, and muscle activity of stroke survivors, providing real-time feedback and assistance in restoring motor functions. Additionally, I would work closely with stroke patients and their caregivers to understand their specific needs, which will help to create a solution that is both user-friendly and adaptable. For many people, success would probably look like creating a product that would receive a lot of recognition or praise; however, I see success as creating a product that will truly improve someone's life. A stroke can make a person feel like they are trapped inside their own body, which can affect their confidence and independence long-term. Through biomedical engineering, I hope to not only restore someone's ability to walk, talk, or eat on their own but also restore their dignity. The day that I see a stroke survivor using my product with ease, comfort, and confidence is when I know my hard work has paid off and that I have earned that right to call myself successful. To me, that is what success is. The "Redefining Victory Scholarship" would be an amazing opportunity for me to make my dreams a reality. College is very expensive, and I know the financial stress that college can bring because I have witnessed people around me still having to pay off student loans. This scholarship would relieve all stress and anxiety, allowing me to focus only on my education. Also, I believe the scholarship will help empower me to keep going and will remind me that there are people out there waiting for a solution, someone who will stand up and advocate for their needs. I want to be the person, and with the support from this scholarship, I will be able to do just that.
    AROC AI/ML Scholarship
I am Saidah Johnson, a senior at Auburndale High School. During my 9th grade year, I was allowed to have hands-on experience using AI and a learning machine in Robotics, leading to my becoming AutoCAD certified. The AutoCAD certification marked a significant milestone in my academic journey, being able to use combined principles and technologies from mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering. Notably, as part of our end-of-year project, the students were tasked with designing an emblem to be showcased during our esteemed end-of-year ceremony. Thinking about the opportunity further honed my skills and creativity in design. I began utilizing AutoCAD design software to transform my 2D emblem into a 3D model using the software and the 3D printer. The entire process of creating the design had become a unique journey for me. Initially, I brainstormed ways to incorporate the school's mascot into the emblem. After researching existing ideas, I quickly realized I wanted to offer something new and different to the school and the concept that best represented the school. I imported a reference picture into Autocad and began the 3D modeling process by activating the 3D and conceptual view and tracing the image by hand. I joined this project despite juggling other school responsibilities in a rigorous STEAM program. After being selected, I ultimately emerged as the winner, whose emblem was chosen and represented. This was utilized for the award ceremony and given to every graduating 9th-grade student. I am confident I will leave a legacy of "far out" thinking in engineering. My impact will inspire all people, and because we are all different, it's okay to make your mark, and it doesn't need to look like anyone else. In the future, I plan to establish my firm and create software and techniques that haven't yet been discovered. AutoCAD proficiency is in high demand for creating digital prototypes and optimizing product designs for cost-effectiveness. My AutoCAD skills will significantly enhance my potential for success and enable me to drive innovation and develop new design concepts. My proficiency in Autocad allows me to generate innovative ideas and designs, making me a valuable asset in any engineering role. In my legacy, I desire to share myself with what AutoCad has taught me. My dedication to obtaining my certification reflects the commitment and perseverance I will bring to any engineering area. I am excited about the opportunity to apply my skills and knowledge to contribute to meaningful projects and positively impact the field of engineering. With meticulous attention to detail and a passion for problem-solving, I am ready to tackle new challenges and contribute to the success of any team I join. I am eager to leverage my Autocad experience to meet and exceed the expectations of what we currently know on this earth. In addition, I am dedicated to continuous learning and professional development to stay at the forefront of the industry.
Delon Hampton & Associates African Americans in STEM Scholarship
Prompt: Tell us about yourself and how you have demonstrated leadership in your community. What are your career and educational goals within STEM, and how do you plan on using your education to leave an impact on the world? My name is Saidah Johnson, a senior at Auburndale High School. I am deeply committed to my community through my consistent leadership roles and opportunities that have allowed me to be active and present through many activities. I am an active board member in a few clubs and a member in others such as Student Government Association (Public Affairs Officer), National Honor Society (Senator/Liaison), Diversity Club, Senior Class,World Language Club and Upward Bound. My involvement in these clubs have provided me with a sense of diverse experiences and opportunities for leadership, with contribution to the school and local community. For example, my role in the National Honor Society has given me the chance to engage in numerous community service projects such as assisting, at one of my local elementary schools over the past years with helping students who struggle with their reading and completing different project tasks. That particular service has been immensely rewarding and has furthered fueled my passion for serving others. Serving a few years ago as a Senator in the National Honor Society provided me with valuable leadership experiences, such as organizing events, leading meetings, and representing the interests of my peers. My career and educational goal, as a possible engineer one day, is to leave a legacy of “ how did she think of that”. I hope to one day obtain a PhD in engineering and own my firm. Perhaps to even have a camp for young girls in STEM who particularly want to be an engineer. I have been on the end of and continue to hear that engineering is a male dominated field and you should try something else. However, I have learned the importance of effective communication, collaboration, and decision-making and all of those together do not equal “give up” for me, but continue on because someone is watching you. My journey has taught me being present and aware in everything I do is always a reward that the universe has given me. It’s valuable and ingenious to maintain interest in the things like STEM that do impact the world. I strive to be the best example of myself for the kids and whomever may be watching. Additionally, I volunteered at POLK State Kids at College, a program that provides educational options for students during the summer. Volunteering there taught me essential leadership skills such as the robotics class, especially since I am AutoCad certified. I am fully prepared to embrace the leadership challenges that come with this ambition. I am also determined to make an impact by inspiring other girls who look like me and proving to them that success is absolutely within reach, regardless of the lack of representation.
C.L. Scholarship of Black Women in Engineering
Saidah Johnson May 31, 2024 A black woman who inspires me the most. My mother, a black woman, inspires me the most. Her unwavering determination, resilience, and hard work have shaped me into the confident individual I am today. As a first-generation college graduate, she faced numerous challenges but never wavered in her pursuit of success. Despite limited support and financial constraints, she attended college at night while juggling multiple jobs to put herself through college. Her remarkable journey has instilled in me the unwavering belief that hard work and perseverance can overcome any obstacle. In addition to her incredible work ethic, my mother's selflessness and compassionate nature have deeply influenced my character. Her ability to put others before herself and her genuine kindness towards everyone she meets have taught me the true meaning of empathy and generosity. Furthermore, her resilience in facing adversity has been a guiding light for me. She has demonstrated that challenges are simply growth opportunities and that setbacks are not roadblocks but mere detours on the path to success. Moreover, her wisdom and guidance have been invaluable in shaping my aspirations and goals. Her support and insightful advice have encouraged me to pursue my dreams with confidence and determination. I am inspired to follow in her footsteps and ready to tackle this world. My mother motivates me to maintain my relationship with God and give HIM all the glory for my accomplishments. She has taught me that God is the ultimate source of happiness, and whenever I feel stressed or scared, it is because I have chosen to give in to that energy, but I should turn to HIM for answers instead. As I approach my senior year and prepare for college, I feel confident I can rely on my relationship with God, thanks to my mother's guidance. I am relieved and assured because I know God will always be with me, just as my mother taught me. This experience will help me not only in college but also in my life. In addition, life decisions may not be on my time but on HIS timing. Especially in a field like engineering that can appear not to have space for a black woman, but it shows to be a male-dominated field. As I grow into the person I was created to be, I've come to realize God's impact on my life. I have confidently acknowledged that without the inspiration and guidance of my mother, I would not have achieved the connection with God that I have today. I will always maintain my relationship with God, as my mom has taught me. I am grateful for all the things I have come to understand. Thanks to my mother, I have found true happiness. In conclusion, again, it is my mother who has inspired me. Her unwavering support and belief in me have instilled a deep sense of confidence. As I continue to navigate high school and beyond, I will carry the invaluable lessons she has imparted – to give my best in everything I do and never abandon my aspirations, regardless of the challenges. My mother, a strong and loving black woman, will always remain my primary source of inspiration. I owe much of who I am today to her, and it is with heartfelt gratitude that I dedicate this essay to her.
