    Nintendo Super Fan Scholarship
“Quick! Grab the Ice Flower and freeze those Dry Bones!” The clock edged towards 2 AM, and my thumbs were pulsating with a mix of pain and determination as they molded around my controller's buttons. With almost a practiced finesse, I maneuvered Luigi and grabbed a frozen Dry Bones, propelling it across the platform, taking down three more in a spectacular domino effect. Just one more audacious leap stood between us and the ultimate showdown with Morton Koopa. My mom and I were on the brink of our seats, hearts pounding in unison, eyes ablaze with determination. After nearly three grueling hours of relentless effort, we were on the cusp of victory. The air was thick with anticipation, our spirits soaring with excitement, ready to conquer and finally claim victory over this formidable level—the last level till we found our way across Layer-Cake Desert. Many of us harbor fond memories of gathering around a TV, controllers in hand, immersed in the vibrant worlds of Nintendo games. These experiences often leave indelible marks on our hearts. For me, the crown jewel of cooperative play is ‘Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe,’ a game that blends nostalgia with fresh, exhilarating challenges. Super Mario wasn't just a game for my mom; it was a cherished chapter of her childhood. She would often recount tales of her youthful escapades in her small Indian town, where she'd eagerly pedal her bike to the local store to rent one of the early Nintendo consoles, her heart brimming with excitement. She would spend hours in front of her grayscale television, which flickered like a portal to another realm. With each press of the controller, she delved deeper into the Mushroom Kingdom on a noble quest to save Princess Peach. I felt as though I was a part of those stories as she painted vivid images of those moments—the adrenaline that surged through dodging Goombas or the triumph of conquering a particularly tough level. This wasn't merely a pastime; it was a bond, a magical connection bridged by the whimsical world of Super Mario. It was almost inevitable that 'Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe' would become our game of choice. There's something uniquely special about sharing a game that bridges generations. Playing alongside my mom not only brought back her childhood memories but also created new ones for both of us. Our victory over Morton’s Compactor Castle was the crucible of these shared experiences—a rite of passage to join my mom in her lived Mario adventures. With her as Mario and me as Luigi, every enemy we outsmarted together, and in every level we conquered, there was a sense of accomplishment and an unspoken bond that grew stronger. As we continue to tread forward, defeating bosses and losing lives, 'Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe' isn’t just my favorite co-op game because of its gameplay. It is my favorite because it is where our worlds, past and present, collided in the most beautiful way, creating memories that would last a lifetime. Princess Peach, here we come to save you from Bowser’s fury!
    Learner Math Lover Scholarship
Math, much like art, is a language of creativity and expression. Just as a painter uses a palette of colors to bring a vision to life, a mathematician uses numbers and equations to explore the unseen patterns of the universe. I’ve loved art for longer than I have math, but my two worlds have collided in ways I would have never expected. In both math and art, there's a profound beauty in symmetry, geometry, and proportion. The Fibonacci sequence manifests in the spiraling patterns of sunflowers and fractals in a snowflake mirror intricate mathematical designs. Each discipline, in its own way, strives to make sense of the world around us. While art appeals to our emotions and senses, math appeals to our logic and intellect, yet both converge in their pursuit of harmony and understanding. The elegance of a well-constructed proof in mathematics can stir the same awe and admiration as a masterpiece on canvas, revealing that at their core, math, and art are interconnected in their common goal to reveal and celebrate the complexities of our world. Math stimulates the mind as art captivates the eye, fostering connections, conjectures, and curiosity. The strokes in an artwork parallel the paths of gradient vector fields in mathematics, guiding our gaze and transforming our perception of reality. This interplay between math and art not only enhances our understanding but also enriches the human experience, bridging the gap between abstract concepts and tangible beauty. That is why I love math. It is but another medium of art, where numbers are the pigments and equations, the brushes, crafting a canvas that is as boundless as imagination itself.
    Lyndsey Scott Coding+ Scholarship
The moment my knee buckled on the tennis court with a sharp "pop," it was not just the second rupture of my ACL; it was the catalyst for a profound shift in my academic trajectory. Up until that point, coding was a medium for me to create fun games and apps, like Quizzania—a Python app that gamified online learning—or StudyHive—a React application fostering virtual collaboration and productivity among high school students. But as I lay there on the court, grappling with the reality of my injury, little did I know that my perspective on technology's role in our lives would begin to evolve dramatically. Determined to find a silver lining to this tragic end of my sophomore tennis season, I began to explore remedial research and advancements in injury prevention when I found my answers at the very unlikely intersection of sports and technology. I consulted Dr. Uhlrich at Stanford, delving into his use of data-driven insights to customize injury prevention strategies. Inspired, I decided to put my app development prowess to new use and developed OmniFit—an app utilizing Java, MySQL, and fitness APIs to create a one-stop injury prevention experience. What started as a modest school project grew, incorporating personalized workout plans, progress tracking, and injury prevention tips, all refined through athlete focus group feedback. Through features like calendar notifications and a competitive leaderboard, Ominifit became more than just another app but a tool that could cater to a diverse range of athletic needs. Standing before the panel of judges as one of 500 Rise for the World global finalists out of nearly 80,000 applicants, I confidently presented my solution, filled with the assurance that my work was valued, holding the potential to revolutionize the athletic world. My presentation wasn't just about showcasing a project; it was about sharing a vision where athletes could fully immerse themselves in the joy of their sport, liberated from the constant worry of injuries. However, my aspirations didn't stop there. I began pondering more profound questions about the synergy between technology and the human body. This curiosity led me to the Human-Computer Integration Lab at the University of Chicago. Under the mentorship of Professor Lopes, I am exploring the fascinating world of electrical muscle stimulation (EMS). Utilizing Python libraries, we are developing innovative wearables that can unconsciously actuate muscles to perform tasks, a venture that perfectly blends my interests in technology and physical well-being. As I seek to pursue a degree in computer science and further research in human-computer interaction, my technological odyssey and desire to bring scalable impact will remain at a crossroads. Learning how to harness computer vision to develop a real-time injury-risk analyzer by tracking user movements or developing wearables that assess and correct dangerous maneuvers on the field, I see myself pushing the boundaries of what technology can achieve in the realm of injury prevention. What had merely started as a way to create exciting virtual experiences has turned into something more—a way to bring an end to the ‘injury epidemic’ that plagues millions globally. I am committed to staying at the cutting edge of technology and health, continuously seeking innovative solutions to complex problems. By combining my computer science skills with my passion for sports and health, I aim to create a world where technology serves as a means for healthier lifestyles and improved physical resilience. This is the vision that drives me, and I am excited about the possibilities that lie ahead in this dynamic field and the profound impact it could have in empowering athletes with the freedom to play fearlessly and safely.
