Bio

My name is Simone Mathieu, a freshman at Broward College pursuing a career in the medical field with plans to become a Physical Therapist and Registered Behavioral Technician (RBT). My inspiration comes from my sister, who is mentally disabled and physically delayed, motivating me to work with children who face similar challenges. I’m currently working toward an A.S. in Physical Therapy Assistant, with plans to continue on to a bachelor’s in Exercise Physiology and eventually a Doctorate in Physical Therapy. I also plan to earn RBT certification to support children with developmental needs. Outside of academics, I volunteer in my community and at my former high school. I am actively involved in NAACP and NNAARP, where I advocate for equity and inclusion in healthcare and education. My goal is to use my skills and passion to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children with disabilities.

A time I showed that I was hungry to succeed was during my freshman year at Broward College when I had to lead a group research paper about mass shootings in the United States. It was a serious and emotional topic, and I knew it deserved real effort and respect. From the start, I noticed most of my group was not taking it seriously. Only one or two people were responding in the group chat. The rest were not showing up to meetings or doing their part. I did not want to fail, and I definitely did not want to turn in a weak paper, especially on a topic as deep and essential as this one. Instead of waiting or complaining, I took the lead. I picked a specific angle for our paper, which focused on how media coverage and easy access to firearms impact mass shootings. I made a shared Google Doc, created a detailed outline, and divided the paper into sections for each group member. I also dropped in sources and explained how to cite them in MLA format to help them get started. I followed up often with reminders and positive messages, hoping people would step up. But as the deadline got closer, I realized most people were not going to finish their parts. I could have just left things as they were, but that is not who I am. I stayed up late for several nights, filling in the missing sections, finding reliable sources, editing the grammar, and making sure the paper made sense from start to finish. I even went to the writing center to make sure everything was clear and well-written. It was not just about getting a good grade. I wanted the paper to be something I was proud of and something that did justice to the topic. Mass shootings affect real people and families, and I felt like that needed to be respected. When we turned it in, our professor said it was one of the best papers he had read that semester. He said it was well organized, well written, and backed up with strong research. That meant a lot to me. One of my teammates even thanked me afterward for not giving up on the group, even when things got tough. That made me realize that leadership is not about being the loudest. Sometimes, it is just about being the one who cares enough to keep going. This experience showed how hungry I am to do well and grow. I do not just want to pass classes. I want to be the kind of person who pushes through hard situations and still does good work. That is also how I plan to be in the medical field. I want to become a physical therapist and an RBT so I can work with children who have disabilities. They deserve someone who will fight for them and never give up. That is who I am becoming, one challenge at a time.
