WinnerBio
Hi, my name is Simone Horton-Parham. I reside in Huntsville, Alabama, and am attending Jackson State University to play golf at the collegiate level. One thing that's evident about me is my love for golf and the challenges it brings. On top of this, I enjoy spending my time reading realistic fiction and have a deep love for music as well, having spent 10+ years playing the piano. Being a well-rounded student athlete and having a 3.7 GPA are only a few reasons for me to be considered for this scholarship. Thank you for considering!

Winner1. Besides golf I am involved in many other organizations inside and outside of school, for example National Honor Society, Beta Club, Black Student Union, and The Travelers Society. I also serve as vice president of the Young Advocates for Equality Club, where we work to raise awareness about important social issues and inequalities. Outside of school, I am a Junior Archonette for Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, and a Junior member of Diamonds on the Green. These experiences have greatly influenced who I am and have taught me the value of dedication, leadership, and community involvement and have helped me build a community that uplifts and empowers me. I love the organizations I'm in and believe they have shaped me to become a well rounded student and person all together.
2. In College I want to study engineering, I’ve always loved math and STEM, so I took the engineering track at my school to prepare for college and a career. I’ve enjoyed every minute of it and appreciated my teachers who’ve pushed me to do my best. Thanks to them, I earned a certification in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) using Autodesk software, and I’m currently doing an internship with Northrop Grumman. I know studying engineering is going to be rough on top of playing collegiate golf, however I am determined to finish strong and know I can achieve this goal because I have been thoroughly prepared by my teachers to continue to study such a strenuous major.
3. One way I plan to continue to give back to my community is volunteering with diamonds on the green to keep giving golf lessons to young black girls. This experience was very rewarding and I loved to see the love I have for the sport I play spread onto others. On top of this serving as a teachers assistant at Aim High St.Louis is another way I plan to get back and serve, helping these young students achieve goals and thrive in school is something that I have a very deep love and appreciation for because it prepares them for a world that already puts them at a disadvantage because of personal circumstances.
4. I think I’m a strong candidate for this scholarship because of my dedication to my education and the effort I’ve put in over the years on top of earning my place as a women's golfer for Jackson State University playing division one level golf. I’ve been a straight-A student, involved in school and community activities, and a varsity athlete. I’m determined thrive at my university and make a difference. This scholarship would help me a lot, especially since I’m the child of a single, unemployed parent. I want to do everything I can to ease the financial burden and make my mom proud. I’ve achieved a lot in high school, and I’m excited to continue that in college, but financial challenges shouldn’t be the thing that holds me back.
Thank you so much for considering my application. I’m truly grateful for this opportunity and hope that I leave you impressed with my application.
