Bio

To talk about myself, I have to start talking about my father. My dad was born in a small town called Pacllon in the province of Ancash, Peru. My grandparents could barely get money to eat. However, my father did everything possible to get out of poverty and studied medicine at the best university of his time in Peru. That's where I come in. My first memories are also in that same town because my father organized a free medical campaign for the entire town and brought his colleagues from the hospital every year. I realized that medicine was the only career I could be happy with because we've always loved helping people. Years later, I was the first in my entire family to leave the country and I came to the United States to fulfill my dream of becoming a doctor. However, I never forgot where I came from or what I was passionate about doing. For this reason at my university, I started a small project called "The Wash Project" where every week we go to distribute food to homeless people near our town. We helped more than 100 homeless people. Never in my life, I've felt more complete than since I decided to start this project. However, as much as I enjoy being here, I'm an international student, and is really hard to get financial aid and I don't get any type of loans. My parents had to sell the house in Peru and I have to work the maximum amount of hours to cover my tuition. Any type of help will be well received. I already know my goals and what I want to do but sadly, my obstacle is being not financially stable.

From a young age, I have been driven to serve others and make a positive impact on my community, thanks in large part to my father's influence. As a family physician in my hometown in Peru, my father cultivated my curiosity in medicine through his compassionate care for patients. He built meaningful relationships with people of all walks of life for decades, uplifting many in their times of need. Witnessing his selfless dedication inspired me to follow a similar path. I strive to have a positive impact now through volunteer work and community service. I founded The Wash Project during my first year of college because I wanted to make an impact. With The Wash Project, I work to build connections with underserved groups like the homeless, providing basic necessities while treating each person with dignity. I am particularly inspired by an elderly woman named Liz I befriended, who despite battling cancer, greeted me each week with joy. Though small, I hope these actions spread some light during difficult times. In the future as a family medicine physician, I aim to provide patient-centered care with empathy, especially to underserved populations. I plan to establish roots in an under-resourced rural or urban community, improving access to care. With my bilingual ability, I will break down barriers for non-English speakers. I hope to uplift people not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually like my father did. I also plan to engage in policy advocacy for reforms like universal healthcare that will create a more just system. However, my path has not been easy. My family made major sacrifices to support my educational dreams in America. Working tirelessly through school, I paid my own tuition. This instilled in me resilience, responsibility, and motivation. Most of all, it gave me a profound sense of purpose and desire to honor my family's investment through tireless service to others. This scholarship would be invaluable in helping me accomplish my goals of uplifting communities in need. It would alleviate some financial burden, allowing me to focus more wholly on my studies and service work. Every dollar makes a difference on the path to medical school. But most importantly, being selected would reaffirm that I am capable of living up to my aspirations. It would reassure me that I can forge a career of empathy and advocacy like my father. I promise to pay that faith forward a hundred times over through my practice and community work. Moving forward, I am dedicated to pursuing a career in medicine that advocates for equitable access to healthcare and strives to eliminate healthcare disparities among marginalized populations. I am driven to create positive change in my community and profession. With a foundation cultivated by my selfless father, I have devoted myself to serving vulnerable populations. Receiving this scholarship would both facilitate and reaffirm my ability to honor my family and uplift others through a career as a caring, dedicated family physician. It would allow me to create ripples of positive impact that spread far and wide.
    Christina Taylese Singh Memorial Scholarship
From a young age, I have been fascinated by the intricacy of the human body and motivated to serve others. My father, a dedicated family physician in Peru, cultivated my curiosity through stories over dinner about his patients. I vividly remember his compassion and how he treated not just their physical but also emotional and spiritual health. Witnessing his selfless service ignited my aspiration to follow in his footsteps. Now, after volunteering with vulnerable populations and shadowing specialists, I intend to pursue family medicine. In my college, I founded an outreach project called "The Wash Project", which was stablished to build relationships with unhoused individuals while providing them with basic needs such as food. Through my work with The Wash Project serving the homeless, I saw the urgent need for doctors committed to equitable access. I was moved by an elderly woman I met named Liz, who despite having cancer, smiled brightly and emanated joy. Interactions like this reinforced my calling to provide care with empathy. The Wash Project has had a profound impact on my career goals and outlook on healthcare. It has reinforced the importance of social responsibility, collaboration, moral courage, and moral imagination in addressing healthcare disparities. Moving forward, I am dedicated to pursuing a career in medicine that advocates for equitable access to healthcare and strives to eliminate healthcare disparities among marginalized populations. The lessons and experiences gained through my involvement with The Wash Project will continue to guide my path as a future healthcare professional committed to making a positive impact on the lives of underserved communities. I choose family medicine because of the meaningful relationships my father built with his patients over decades. I want to be the trusted doctor entire families rely on across their lives. By understanding patients’ lives outside the clinic, I can deliver comprehensive care. I aim to practice in an underserved rural or urban area, improving access to care. With my bilingual skills, I will break down barriers that often inhibit proper treatment. While each medical field offers ways to help people, family medicine will allow me to most directly serve those in need. My volunteer work has shown me the devastating impact of health disparities. I strive to treat all patients with dignity, regardless of economic or insurance limitations. I will remain active with groups like the American Academy of Family Physicians to advocate for universal healthcare and other reforms. My own struggles affording an education in the US taught me resilience and responsibility. My family sacrificed greatly, selling our home and more, to support my dream. Working tirelessly, I paid my own tuition. These challenges reinforced my motivation and showed me that dedication can overcome any obstacle. Most importantly, my family’s sacrifices ingrained in me an unwavering sense of purpose. I promise to honor their investment, and my father’s legacy, by uplifting those most in need.
Manny and Sylvia Weiner Medical Scholarship
From a young age, I have been motivated to become a physician largely due to my family's unwavering dedication to providing compassionate care. When my grandfather was terminally ill, my father brought the hospital home - transforming our family into an impromptu medical team. Although my grandfather passed, witnessing how deeply my father cared for his patients solidified my aspiration to follow in his footsteps. However, pursuing my medical education in the United States came with significant financial obstacles. My family made immense sacrifices, even selling our home in Peru, in order to fund my undergraduate studies. As the eldest child, I felt a grave responsibility to alleviate this burden in any way I could. I took on multiple jobs during school and increased my work hours each summer, often at the expense of my grades initially. With rigorous discipline and many sleepless nights, I overcame these early setbacks and discovered a level of time management I didn't know was possible. The pride I felt at being able to pay my own tuition fueled my motivation and resilience. While challenging, conquering financial difficulties also instilled in me invaluable traits that will aid my medical practice. I learned how to connect with people from all walks of life through my various jobs waiting tables, stocking shelves, and cleaning offices. I saw firsthand how economic insecurity can severely impact health, molding my desire to treat uninsured and underserved populations. Most importantly, the gravity of my family's sacrifices to support my education ingrained in me an unwavering sense of responsibility, empathy, and perseverance that will enable me to overcome any obstacle in this profession. My goal is to honor my family's investment by serving where the need is greatest, whether in an urban clinic or rural outpost. I hope to provide care to communities just like the one I grew up in, where access is limited. With an accepting and compassionate bedside manner, I will leverage my bilingual skills to ensure patient understanding and comfort. My experiences overcoming financial adversity have prepared me to relate to patients facing similar hardships. I strive to not only treat their medical conditions, but to understand how social determinants affect their health, and to see each person as a whole. After losing almost everything to come here, I am unfathomably grateful for the opportunity to pursue this noble profession. It is my solemn promise to give back through tireless patient advocacy and dedication to underserved populations. I am confident my resilience and empathy cultivated by my journey thus far will enable me to uplift those in need, and fulfill my dream of creating a lasting positive impact as a physician.
    Donovan Ghimenti Legacy Scholarship
As a college student in California, I have faced my fair share of challenges on the road to higher education. The pressure to succeed academically, the financial strain of tuition and living expenses, and the constant expectations of society have all contributed to my struggles as a student. However, there is one challenge that has impacted me on a deeper level - the effects of drug abuse on my family. My grandfather had seven children, but only my father and two of his brothers succeeded in life. The rest of my aunts and uncles were consumed by drug abuse and alcoholism, ultimately ruining their lives. Witnessing the destructive effects of addiction on my family members has been one of the biggest struggles of my life. Growing up, I watched as my aunts and uncles made poor decisions, lost their jobs, and ended up homeless or in jail. Their addiction took priority over everything else in their lives, including their own children. I saw cousins struggle to make ends meet, to find a stable place to live, and to get an education. It was heartbreaking to watch, and it deeply impacted my own schooling. There were times when I felt like giving up on my education. I felt like there was no point in working hard when the people I loved most were unable to do the same. However, I knew deep down that education was my ticket out of the cycle of addiction and poverty that had impacted my family for generations. Despite the challenges I faced, I pushed forward and worked hard in school. I poured my heart into my studies, determined to make a better life for myself and my family. I sought support from friends, family, and mental health professionals, and I learned how to cope with the emotional toll of addiction. Today, I am proud to say that I am a college student with a bright future ahead of me. I am pursuing my dreams of becoming a successful professional, and I am committed to breaking the cycle of addiction that has plagued my family for so long. I am determined to use my education to make a positive impact in the world and to help others who have faced similar struggles. Applying for this scholarship is an important step for me. It is a way to honor the life of Donovan Ghimenti, and to acknowledge the struggles that so many students face. I know that there are countless others who have been impacted by mental illness and drug abuse, and I hope that by sharing my story, I can inspire others to seek the support they need to overcome their own challenges. In conclusion, my struggles with the effects of drug abuse on my family have deeply impacted my schooling, but they have also made me stronger and more determined to succeed. I believe that education is the key to breaking the cycle of addiction, and I am grateful for the opportunity to apply for this scholarship as a step towards achieving my goals.
    Maggie's Way- International Woman’s Scholarship
As I stood at my grandfather's bedside, watching him take his final breaths after his long battle with cancer, I knew that my future would be forever changed. It was in that moment that I realized my calling to become a doctor and help others who were facing similar struggles. I have had to overcome significant obstacles to pursue my goals. My journey began when I lost my grandfather and several family members to cancer. Their struggles inspired me to pursue a career in medicine so that I could help others who were facing similar challenges. However, this goal was not easy to achieve. Pursuing this dream was not without its own challenges. After a civil crisis and political problems in Peru, I decided to move to the United States to pursue my education. Like Maggie, I came here alone and with no support system. This was a daunting challenge, as I had to adapt to a new culture, a new language, and a new way of life. I had to work hard to learn English, make new friends, and adjust to a new educational system. Despite these challenges, I remained determined to succeed and to make a difference in the world. Therefore, I found inspiration in the story of Malgorzata Kwiecien. Her bravery and determination to pursue her dreams in a new country, with no support system, was truly remarkable. I saw a reflection of myself in her, as I too was navigating a new environment and striving to make my mark in the world of medicine. Like Maggie, I am intellectually bold and always seeking to expand my knowledge and expertise. I have faced challenges along the way, including language barriers and financial struggles, but I have remained determined to succeed. My passion for medicine and helping others drives me to push past these obstacles and keep moving forward. I'm intellectually curious and always eager to learn. I enjoy dedicating countless hours to studying and learning as much as I can about medicine. I am also determined to become an expert in my chosen area of study, just as Maggie was determined to become an expert in hers. Furthermore, I am also physically active and enjoy pushing myself to new heights. Although I am not a ski instructor or a mountain climber like Maggie, I am a competitive athlete and have always enjoyed challenging myself physically. I believe that this determination and physical strength are important qualities for any woman pursuing a career in STEM. I am proud to be one of them, and I am honored to have the opportunity to apply for this scholarship in honor of Maggie's life. Her legacy serves as a reminder that we can achieve great things when we set our minds to it and pursue our dreams with determination and courage. As I continue on my journey, I hope to inspire others who may be facing their own challenges and uncertainties. I am grateful for the support of this scholarship, which will help me continue on my path to becoming a doctor and making a positive impact in the lives of others.

    FMA College Scholarship
I have always been passionate about medicine and healthcare. I believe that healthcare is not just about treating the sick, but also about preventing illnesses and promoting overall well-being. One of the biggest threats to public health is natural disasters, especially floods. Floods can cause massive damage to infrastructure, destroy homes and businesses, and most importantly, cause loss of life. As someone who is passionate about medicine, I believe that it is important to address the challenges of flood risk reduction and contribute to making a difference in addressing flood issues. One of the main challenges to reducing the risk and impacts of floods on people and communities today is the lack of preparedness. Many people do not take the threat of floods seriously and do not take necessary precautions. In many cases, people are caught off guard and do not have the resources to respond effectively. This leads to increased loss of life, property damage, and displacement. Moreover, the impacts of floods are often not evenly distributed, with marginalized communities being disproportionately affected. Another challenge is the lack of funding for research and development of technologies and strategies to prevent and mitigate the impacts of floods. As a future medical professional, I believe that I can contribute to reducing the impacts of floods on people and communities in several ways. Firstly, I can use my knowledge of public health to raise awareness about the importance of flood preparedness. This includes educating people about the dangers of floods, providing information about how to prepare for floods, and promoting the use of early warning systems. Secondly, I can contribute to developing more equitable and sustainable solutions to reduce the impacts of floods. This can include working with community organizations and local governments to ensure that marginalized communities have access to resources and are included in decision-making processes. I can also work on developing and implementing technologies that can help prevent or mitigate the impacts of floods. For example, I can work on developing better drainage systems, building resilient infrastructure, and promoting the use of green infrastructure to reduce the severity of floods. Additionally, I believe that as a medical professional, I have a responsibility to respond to the health impacts of floods. This can include providing medical assistance to those affected by floods, setting up health clinics in affected areas, and providing mental health support to those who have experienced trauma as a result of floods. In addition, I can work on research projects to understand the long-term health impacts of floods on individuals and communities, and develop interventions to address these impacts. In conclusion, floods are a major threat to public health and the well-being of communities around the world. As a future medical professional, I believe that it is important to address the challenges of flood risk reduction and contribute to making a difference in addressing flood issues. I believe that by raising awareness, developing equitable and sustainable solutions, and responding to the health impacts of floods, I can make a meaningful contribution towards reducing the impacts of floods on people and communities. With the help of this scholarship, I can continue my education and training to become a more effective contributor to reducing the impacts of floods on people and communities.
Sean Carroll's Mindscape Big Picture Scholarship
As a child, I was always fascinated by the stars in the night sky. I would stare up at them and wonder about the mysteries of the universe. This fascination stayed with me through my formative years and led me to pursue a career in science, with a particular focus on physics and astronomy. To me, the study of the universe is not just a theoretical pursuit. It has practical implications for our daily lives, from the technologies we use to the medicines that keep us healthy. But beyond that, it is a deeply meaningful pursuit that helps us to understand our place in the cosmos and our connection to the larger universe. One of the reasons I believe it is important to work towards a better understanding of the universe is because it inspires us to ask fundamental questions about ourselves and our place in the world. We are a part of a vast, interconnected web of energy and matter that is constantly evolving and changing. By studying the universe, we gain a deeper appreciation for the complexity and beauty of the world around us. As a young child growing up in Peru, I was always fascinated by the vastness and complexity of the universe. I would often spend hours gazing up at the stars, trying to comprehend the mysteries of our existence. This fascination with the universe eventually led me to pursue a career in medicine, where I hope to uncover the secrets of life itself. However, my journey towards understanding the universe has not been without its challenges. My family has been deeply affected by cancer, and I have lost several close relatives to the disease. These experiences have driven me to want to better understand the workings of our world, including the complex biological processes that underlie life and the intricate relationships between different organisms and ecosystems. Another reason I believe in the importance of understanding the universe is because of the practical applications of the knowledge we gain. For example, our understanding of the physics of stars has led to the development of nuclear energy and fusion research. Our understanding of the properties of light has led to the development of fiber optics and lasers. And our understanding of the properties of matter has led to the development of medical technologies such as MRI machines. In order to deepen our understanding of the universe, there are a number of concepts and ideas that I hope to employ. First and foremost, I believe that we need to continue to push the boundaries of our knowledge through scientific research and discovery. This means investing in technologies that allow us to study the universe at ever-greater depths and with greater accuracy, such as telescopes, particle accelerators, and gravitational wave detectors. I believe that it is crucially important that we work to better understand the nature of our universe. Not only does this knowledge have the potential to transform our lives in countless ways, but it can also help us to address some of the most pressing challenges facing our world today. For example, by studying the effects of climate change on our planet, we can gain a better understanding of how to mitigate its impact and protect our environment for future generations. By exploring the complexities of the human brain, we can develop new treatments and therapies for neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. But beyond these practical benefits, I believe that there is something deeply meaningful and profound about the pursuit of knowledge and understanding. The act of exploring the universe and seeking to comprehend its mysteries is one of the most noble and awe-inspiring pursuits that humans can engage in. It connects us to something larger than ourselves, and it gives us a sense of purpose and meaning in a world that can often seem chaotic and confusing. In order to better understand the universe, I believe that we must employ a wide range of ideas and concepts from different fields. While my own background is in medicine, I am deeply interested in the intersections between biology, physics, and philosophy. I believe that by approaching these fields with an interdisciplinary mindset, we can gain a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of the world around us. I believe in the importance of collaboration and interdisciplinary research. The study of the universe is inherently multi-disciplinary, drawing on fields such as physics, astronomy, chemistry, and biology. By bringing together experts from different fields, we can gain a more comprehensive understanding of the universe and its many mysteries. For example, recent advances in the field of quantum biology have demonstrated the importance of quantum mechanics in understanding biological systems. By studying the quantum properties of enzymes and other biological molecules, scientists have gained new insights into the fundamental mechanisms of life itself. Similarly, by exploring the philosophical implications of quantum mechanics and other scientific theories, we can gain a deeper appreciation for the complex interplay between matter, consciousness, and the universe as a whole. Ultimately, I believe that the pursuit of knowledge and understanding is one of the most important and meaningful endeavors that we can engage in as human beings. By supporting young people who are passionate about working to understand the universe, we can help to ensure that future generations will continue to push the boundaries of our knowledge and explore the mysteries of our existence. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to apply for the Mindscape Big Picture Scholarship. With the support of this scholarship, I will be able to continue my studies in medicine and explore the fascinating intersections between biology, physics, and philosophy. I am committed to using this knowledge to better understand the world around us and to make a positive impact on the lives of others.

The day my grandfather died was the day my world turned upside down. I was only 13 years old and had never experienced such profound sadness and loss before. As a child, I had always been in awe of him. He was a man who made it his life's work to help others. Watching him slowly waste away from cancer was devastating, and it left a mark on my heart that will never fully heal. But as I grew older, I realized that my grandfather's legacy was not just in the humble work he did, but in the kindness and compassion he showed to everyone he met. He had a way of making people feel seen and heard, of comforting them in their darkest moments. And that legacy inspired me to pursue a career in medicine myself. When I began studying medicine in Peru, I felt like I was following in his footsteps. But as the country became embroiled in civil unrest and political turmoil, I knew that I needed to leave in order to pursue my dreams. It was a difficult decision to make, leaving behind everything I had ever known and loved, but I knew that the opportunities in the United States were greater, and I was determined to make the most of them. The journey to get to the U.S. was not easy, and there were many moments when I felt like giving up. But I knew that my grandfather would have wanted me to keep fighting, to keep striving for my dreams. And so, I continued on, never losing sight of my ultimate goal: to become a doctor and carry on his legacy of compassion and healing. But along the way, I faced another devastating loss. My aunt, who had been like a second mother to me, was diagnosed with cancer. Watching her go through the same struggles as my grandfather was heart-wrenching, and it made me realize just how important it is to have access to quality medical care. I saw firsthand how difficult it was for my family to afford her treatments, and it solidified my determination to become a doctor who could help those who need it most. So now, as I continue my studies in the United States, I am more focused than ever on what matters most in my life: using my knowledge and skills to help others. I founded an outreach program in my community called "The Wash Project," which provides basic hygiene necessities to homeless individuals in need. It may seem like a small thing, but I know that every little bit helps, and it's my way of giving back to the community that has welcomed me with open arms. But my ultimate goal is to become a doctor and serve those who are most vulnerable. I know that the road ahead will not be easy, and there will be many more losses and challenges to face. But I am determined to fight through them, just as Cat Zingano has fought through her own tragedies. I know that the financial burden of pursuing higher education can be overwhelming, especially for those who have experienced loss and hardship. But I also know that with the support of this scholarship, I will be able to continue fighting for my dreams and working towards a better future for myself and my community. So I ask that you consider me for the Cat Zingano Overcoming Loss Scholarship, not just for my own sake, but for the sake of all those who have faced loss and hardship, and who are fighting to make a better life for themselves and their loved ones. I am grateful for this opportunity, and I promise to use it to make a positive impact on the world, just as my grandfather and aunt did before me.

My academic and professional goals have always been focused on pursuing a career in medicine. After losing my grandfather and other family members to cancer in Peru, I became motivated to make a difference in the world of healthcare. I am now a college student studying pre-med with the ultimate goal of becoming a doctor and using my skills to help those in need. In addition to my academic goals, I have always been passionate about giving back to my community. Growing up in Peru during times of civil crisis and political problems, I saw firsthand how important it is for individuals to come together and support one another. As a result, I have made it my mission to get involved in various community service projects, both locally and abroad. One project that particularly inspired me was volunteering at a free clinic in a low-income area of Peru. There, I saw how healthcare disparities affected the community and realized how crucial it is for individuals to have access to quality healthcare. Through my work at the clinic, I was able to assist doctors and nurses with basic tasks and even provide emotional support to patients. This experience solidified my desire to become a doctor and serve underrepresented communities. In the United States, I have continued my community involvement by volunteering at a local hospital and participating in various service projects through my college. I have also been involved in a program that mentors underprivileged students and helps them succeed academically. By sharing my own experiences and offering support and guidance, I hope to make a positive impact on these students' lives and inspire them to pursue higher education and their dreams. In addition to my academic and professional goals, I am also committed to giving back to my community. As a first-generation college student, I understand the importance of access to education and resources, particularly for underrepresented students. That is why I founded an outreach program in my community called "The Wash Project". This program provides hygiene kits and laundry services to homeless individuals in our area. Through this initiative, I have seen firsthand the power of community service and how small actions can make a big difference. My experience with "The Wash Project" has been inspiring and has shown me that there are endless opportunities to make a difference in our world. Seeing the impact that our small program has had on the lives of individuals in our community has fueled my passion for service and has inspired me to continue giving back. I am confident that through my career in medicine, I will be able to help others in a meaningful way, just as I have been able to do with "The Wash Project". Overall, my experiences both in Peru and in the United States have inspired me to pursue a career in medicine and give back to underrepresented communities. With the help of this scholarship, I can continue to focus on my academic and professional goals while also continuing to serve my community. I believe that everyone, regardless of their background or circumstances, deserves access to higher education and the opportunities it brings. By pursuing my goals and giving back to my community, I hope to make a difference in the world and inspire others to do the same.

I lost my grandfather, great aunt, and cousin to this terrible disease, and it left a profound impact on me. It motivated me to pursue a career in medicine and to make a difference in the fight against cancer. However, coming from a low-income background, pursuing higher education in STEM fields was a challenge. 1. I refused to let my circumstances define me. However, civil unrest and political instability in Peru made it difficult for me to pursue my dreams. After weighing my options, I made the difficult decision to leave my family and friends behind and start anew in the United States. Arriving in the United States was a culture shock for me. I struggled with the language barrier and adjusting to a new way of life. Additionally, being from a low-income household meant that I had limited financial resources and faced many obstacles in obtaining an education. However, I refused to let these challenges deter me from achieving my goals. I was determined to pursue medicine and technology and help those who are in need. To overcome these challenges, I focused on my studies and took advantage of every opportunity that was presented to me. I immersed myself in the culture and worked hard to learn the language, which helped me to communicate better with my professors and classmates. Additionally, I reached out to mentors and sought guidance from those who had gone through similar experiences. Through their support, I was able to navigate the complex higher education system in the United States and secure scholarships to help pay for my education. In conclusion, my experience with losing family members to cancer has motivated me to pursue medicine and technology. Imagine losing a loved one and having that loss completely reshape your future. For me, that loved one was my grandfather in Peru, and his passing ignited a passion for medicine that I couldn't ignore. As a BIPOC student, my educational journey has been far from traditional. When I lost my grandfather to a curable illness in Peru, I knew I wanted to become a doctor to help others avoid the same fate. However, after a civil crisis and political turmoil, my family and I were forced to leave our home and seek refuge in the United States. Starting over in a new country was challenging, and I struggled to find my footing. Despite the obstacles, I remained committed to my goal of becoming a doctor and began my non-traditional educational path. Attending community college was the first step in my journey towards becoming a physician. It was a humbling experience, but I found that it allowed me to grow in ways that traditional college did not. I met people from diverse backgrounds and experiences, and it opened my eyes to the power of education in bringing people together. It was during this time that I discovered my passion for research and neuroscience, and I became determined to use my education to make a positive impact in the world. Transferring to a four-year university was another significant step in my educational journey. As a first-generation college student, I had to navigate the complexities of financial aid and academic requirements on my own. My family and I have had to navigate unemployment and financial uncertainty, and it has put a strain on my ability to continue my education. Despite this, I remain committed to my goals and determined to find a way to continue my education and pursue my career as a physician. I am interested in pursuing a career in psychiatry because I believe it is an area of medicine that is often overlooked but critically important. Mental health disorders affect millions of people around the world, and it is an area that needs more attention and research. I believe that through my research and work as a psychiatrist, I can make a positive impact on people's lives and help reduce the stigma around mental health. My ultimate goal is to work with underserved communities, particularly those in inner cities. "Dog is man's best friend" is what everyone says. I suffer from depression and anxiety. Every night it used to be hard for me to sleep because sometimes suicidal thoughts would haunt my mind. Being away from home is very difficult for me. I left my family, friends, and my whole life in Peru to come to the United States to fulfill my dreams. When I lived in Peru things were simpler because my dog gave me a lot of love and when I felt alone at night he always slept with me. However, everything changed the day my parents called me crying because Momo, my puppy, had been hit by a drunk driver. My soul fell to pieces. I couldn't even say goodbye to my best friend. How much I wanted to buy a flight and travel that same night to Peru, but my lack of financial support did not allow me. Momo had accompanied us for 10 years and on March 5, 2022, Momo went from giving love to us, to giving love to God and his angels. That day I fell into a deep depression because although Momo was not with me in California, I always made a video call with my parents, Momo listened to me on the phone and made me feel less lonely. After a few months of grieving, I received an email notification where I realized that some puppies would be euthanized in an animal shelter due to a lack of adoption. So I immediately went without hesitation and rescued Maki. A little chihuahua that is so happy and at the same time fills you with little kisses. When I first saw her she was trembling a lot and was scared. Her ears stuck back and she used to flinch when I tried to pet her thinking that I was going to hit her. Nevertheless, I decided to train her and in 1 month she became a PSA (Psychiatric Service Animal). When she hears me cry, she stops what she's doing and she goes to do pressure therapy to calm me down. She presses her head to my chest and when she realizes that I’m breathing too fast, she breathes with me. Then, she kisses me on the face to show me that she has a lot of love and that I am loved too. She does all of this as a rescued dog from a shelter without being a breed dog. I love her so much and she fills me with so much love when I see her. She helped me to heal the wounds and although she is not Momo, she is different and she gives me the love that I need. This shows that it is not necessary to have a purebred puppy to perform tasks for service dogs. Maki does and although she has a lot to learn, she is excellent and very smart in everything she does. That's why I always urge my friends to adopt and not to buy dogs. Maki made me understand that rescue dogs are just as capable as any other dog. Maki went from being afraid and anxious to be a dog that protects me from anxiety! Maki is a very happy dog who helps and gives emotional support to whoever needs it. She is the perfect dog for everyone and just like I found Maki, I encourage all those who are hesitating whether to rescue or to buy. Maki taught me that being as small as a chihuahua would not prevent her from having a heart as big as she has.
