Bio

I am a senior from Bluffton, Indiana who has faced persistent financial hardship, making the cost of college a significant challenge. Despite these obstacles, I am determined to break the cycle and build a stable, meaningful future. I plan to pursue a degree in music education and become a high school choir teacher, where I can inspire students through the same passion for music that has guided and strengthened me. As the first person in my family to attend college, I am navigating this path independently and financing my education on my own. With perseverance, discipline, and a deep commitment to my goals, I am prepared to make the most of every opportunity I am given. Music has been a defining part of my life for as long as I can remember. As a child, I was the type who chipped teeth singing and dancing in the bathtub. Music was more than just a hobby. It was my sanctuary. Growing up in a broken home, I searched for stability and comfort. I quickly found that in music. No matter what was going on around me, I knew I could lean back on music. It became my escape, and now, my purpose. I have been a member of the Bluffton Choir for nearly eight years. I joined as a shy ten year old. I didn’t know what it meant to be in a choir. Trying something new pushed me outside of my comfort zone. However, as the years passed, I discovered my voice. Singing in this setting challenged me to grow. Singing in a choir with others reminded me that my voice was important, even when it felt insignificant in every other aspect of my life. What I was going through at home shaped me more than I realized at the time. My mom was rarely around, I had no relationship with my dad, and the environment I grew up in often felt unstable. I argued constantly with my siblings, and most days I felt alone. I was shy and kept my thoughts to myself because it felt easier than explaining my feelings. Choir became the one place where I didn’t feel invisible. It gave me structure and a sense of belonging when I didn’t have it otherwise. Music has not only shaped my goals, it has shaped my character. It has taught me discipline when practice felt exhausting, patience when progress was slow, and humility when I received criticism. Over the years, I have grown from a quiet child to someone who confidently leads by example. As one of the older members of my choir, I see younger students standing where I once stood. I make it a priority to encourage them because I want to see them succeed. I truly understood what music was to me at the end of my freshman year when we performed "Baba Yetu." I felt something shift inside of me, standing on stage performing with talented voices. The song was powerful, but what mattered most was the unity it created. For the first time, I saw how music could bring people together. At that moment, I knew I didn’t just want to sing. I wanted to create the same sense of belonging for others one day. I wanted to watch music change others the way it changed me. This past January, I had the opportunity to sing with the Indiana All State Honors Choir. Being accepted into this choir was the best thing that could have happened to me. The audition process itself required preparation, focus, and confidence. Performing alongside so many talented and passionate students reminded me how far I have come. From a shy, uncertain child to someone capable of rising to high expectations. Because of my experiences, I am committed to becoming a choir teacher. I want to create a classroom that offers stability, encouragement, and inspiration for students like me, who don't have those things anywhere else. Music transformed my loneliness into confidence and my potential into purpose. I have grown into someone with passion, resilience, and the courage to use my voice. Receiving this scholarship would allow me to continue that journey, and one day provide other students with the same sense of belonging that changed my life.
