West Family Scholarship
Growing up, I had a difficult time using my voice. Over the last few years, I’ve realized how impactful it is when my voice is heard. Breaking out of my shell and getting involved in my community and governance has made me eager for more opportunities to partner with like-minded peers and adults. Financial help in the form of a scholarship like the West Family Scholarship will allow me to “get my foot in the door” of pursuing my dreams. A recent experience that I’ve had has made me even more confident in my future as a college student. I was given the opportunity to lead a group of my peers at the 2023 Girl Scouts of USA National Convention. I participated in this event as a Girl Scouts of Eastern PA National Delegate. The National Delegate role in Girl Scouts is for girls and adult Girl Scouts to represent their counsel and to help improve the overall Girl Scout movement.
Although my initial goal is to pursue an MS in Athletic Training, my ultimate goal is to become an Orthopedic Surgeon. Starting as an athletic trainer will allow me to know sports injuries from the moment they happen through surgery and post-op physical therapy. This knowledge will enable me to become an even stronger surgeon because I will see the path and journey that my patients are taking and what they have been through. This type of experience is vital to the care that I will bring to my practice, especially to those patients who are underrepresented and may not have all the necessary resources to recover and seek prior advice and care. During my athletic recovery journey, I had a lot of doubt in myself, and at times, I thought I would never be able to play sports again. One important resource is mental health recovery, which is vital to getting back to oneself physically and mentally.
I want to start my career as an athletic trainer. While I am an athletic trainer, I dream of working in the NFL for a couple of years while working my way up to become either a sports medicine physician assistant or a sports medicine surgeon/physician. I would also like to create a non-profit that helps young children learn what to do in specific emergencies. For example, calling 911, knowing what to do if there’s a fire, nosebleeds, stopping the bleeding, CPR, the Heimlich, ext. I think there needs to be more awareness in basic emergency knowledge to lessen the number of accidents. I want to make this learning experience engaging and fun while ensuring everyone retains the information. Thank you for your time and consideration.
In the next 2-4 years, I want to attend a top Sports Medicine college to major in exercise science or kinesiology and minor in Spanish and nutrition. I wish to obtain a Masters Degree in Athletic Training. There has been a recent change in the years where you now need to be certified in Athletic Training; instead of only needing a Bachelor's degree, you are also required to obtain a Master's degree. I would also like to get involved with sports teams and join clubs at my chosen college. I will participate in different experiences and opportunities that will help me advance in my career path and increase my knowledge.
