Wanting to learn more about the natural world has always guided the way I see my life. Growing up in a low income house, I learned early on that education is my path to opportunity. My mom worked tirelessly to support our family, and her determination showed me the ambition to pursue my goals no matter the obstacles. As a first-generation college student, I approach my education with a deep sense of responsibility, knowing that every opportunity I get brings me closer to reaching a future where I can give back to others. My passion for science grew from a fascination with how living organisms interact with the environment. In high school, studying biology allowed me to understand the beauty and complexity of life at every level, from cells to the biosphere. Learning about scientists such as Rachel Carson showed me how science can be used not only to discover knowledge but also to protect the world around us. Inspired by environmental challenges facing our planet, I became deeply interested in environmental and marine science. Earning a 5 on my AP Biology exam further strengthened my confidence in my ability to pursue a future in scientific research and conservation. Beyond the classroom, I have worked to turn my passions into action through service and leadership. As a leader in Paws for a Cause, I organized the Walk for the Animals, a fundraiser that brought together students and community members to support orphaned cats in need of care. I also served as President and Vice President of my school’s Liturgical Choir, where I helped organize events and ensure our group remained committed to serving our community through music and faith. Now that I am in college even in my first year I have been elected as the finance chair for my community group. These experiences have taught me how leadership is rooted in responsibility, empathy, and the willingness to step forward when others need support. In college, I plan to continue studying biology and focus on marine science. My goal is to pursue a career protecting marine ecosystems and advocating for sustainable environmental practices. By combining my scientific knowledge with community engagement, I hope to contribute to protecting biodiversity so that future generations can experience the natural world as I have. Receiving the Willie Louis Pegues Scholarship would significantly influence my educational journey. Financial support would ease the burden of college costs and allow me to focus more fully on my studies and service. I hope to honor Mr. Pegues’ legacy by pursuing my education with dedication, and using science as a tool to serve both people and the planet.

In my opinion, being of service is an obligation, as opposed to a duty, to show one's appreciation for what someone else has done for them. I know this because I grew up in a low income, single-parent family and had to rely on the kindness of others when I was a child. My experiences that have shaped my desire to "give back" will be utilized in a manner that celebrates my passion as well as the people who helped me along the way. Throughout my high school years, I always concentrated my efforts on giving back to others, whether it be through a leadership role, advocacy, or involvement in the community. I was the President and Vice President of the Liturgical Choir and helped to organize their School events and rehearsals, making sure that all of my members feel included and heard. In addition to this, I also volunteered as a member of Paws for a Cause and took on the role of coordinating our annual “Walk for the Animals” fundraiser and to help contribute to an animal rescue that focused on rescuing orphaned cats in our community. I also was a member of The Hidden Opponent, which is a non-profit organization that helps student-athletes who face mental health problems. By being a member of the organization and facilitating the discussion of these topics, I wanted to break the stigma associated with mental health and ensure that no student-athlete felt alone, even though they wore a “mask” of self-confidence and self-courage. In the end, I learned that being a leader is not about the title that you hold but being there for others and showing them compassion. As a college student, being in service means more than just being in leadership roles; I enjoy being able to connect with people on more personal levels. For instance, one way I do this is through being a pen pal to a student at an under-funded elementary school, writing letters to them with questions as well as encouraging confidence and excitement about learning. The chance to receive a letter may be the highlight of his week or month, reminding me that being in service doesn’t necessarily have to mean doing something grand. I also volunteer with programs that involve writing letters, specifically to seniors in nursing homes that do not have regular relationships with their communities or families. This is one way I can bring people together across space and time to combat loneliness. I also participate in several programs on campus, such as Women in Sports Day, which gives young girls the opportunity to see themselves as strong and empowered leaders, not only on the field but also off the field. As a college student, I have learned that we not only use service to uplift others from within our own community, but we also use it to meet their needs and celebrate their successes. My goal is to make a positive difference in the world not only through my chosen profession in the field of marine biology but also through my work in the field of environmental protection. My dream is to have a career in marine conservation, which also includes protecting marine life from pollution and destruction of marine habitats. I will dedicate my time, education, and career to making a positive impact in the world, one community at a time.

As a first-generation college student for most of my life, even attending college was often hard to envision. From taking college entrance exams to college applications, everything was new and daunting. Then, once I went through the process of applying and got accepted, I could finally let myself envision and dream that I was actually doing it, going to college. Then came the onslaught of bills and the lack of resources. Every day was a new experience times two for my mom, as I have a twin. I am so glad now, in my first year of college, that I went through with it and was not deterred by the unknown. Now that I am at the college level, every day is new. I have run into many challenges, but have also had some of the most amazing experiences with amazing people. I am driven by the opportunity to make a difference in the world. Since I was little, I have always made it my goal to help as many people as I can. This is why I work so hard at school; this is my goal every day in small and big ways. I work two jobs while playing two sports and going to school full-time to be able to afford college. It is a lot of work, and many days it’s challenging, but I would not change the opportunity for anything as a first-generation college student. I realize that many don’t have this chance. This scholarship would mean everything to me. I would be able to put more time into my studies. I would not have to worry about money as much as I currently do. It would make all the difference in continuing this wonderful, sometimes difficult journey.

The consequences of inaction on climate change are already evident—rising sea levels, devastating wildfires, and extreme weather events threaten ecosystems and communities worldwide. Without immediate and decisive action, these crises will only escalate, disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations and future generations. The time for complacency has passed; sustainability must be a mandatory priority at every level—global, national, and individual. International cooperation is essential in addressing this crisis. Climate change knows no boundary, and neither will its challenges. The Paris Climate Accord is just one pact that demonstrates the need of the world standing together, while accountability and much stronger enforcement will provide true progress. Rich countries must help poorer ones transition to cleaner energy without sacrificing economic stability. Only then can we hope to minimize the damage and build a sustainable future. However, large-scale policies form only part of the solution. Individuals do a lot to nurture sustainability through conscious decisions on waste reduction, supporting eco-friendly businesses, and calling for change. Small, continued acts build up and shift both industries and governments onto more sustainable pathways. I am committed to this cause, incorporating environmental stewardship into my daily life and future career. I work to be a leader in marine conservation through scientific research and the development of policy that will assure a livable Earth now and for future generations. "We never go out of Style" Now imagine screaming that at the top of your lungs while driving in the car, on the way to literally anywhere. The lyrics and the tune of "Style" instantly lift your spirits, and you just can’t think of anything else. I have so many amazing memories of long drives with my mom, and the one thing that is constant is that every time this song comes on, the volume goes up and we sing along; it’s tradition.      Taylor Swift has the unique ability of creating a story. She builds bridges no one can touch, even in their wildest dreams. "Style," though, sticks out to me. I have memories of this song since I was in 7th grade, singing it at softball practice. It was catchy but also, in a way, deep. I’m older now and am so glad she shared the experience of her short but famous fling with Harry Styles. His famously bad driving and all. Even though their relationship only lasted a couple months, we Swifties got this masterpiece.        One thing I admire about Taylor and her songwriting is that she is not afraid to share her experiences. People constantly say she only writes about her ex’s, which is not true. She takes this criticism and runs with it though, breaking records and doing what she loves all in one stride. She wrote about her experiences of being young and in a hot and cold relationship with another giant pop star. Though she knew she was probably going to face criticism, she stayed true to herself. This is an example we all can use.     That is what makes this song so amazing—she puts you in her shoes. That is honestly what makes her writing so unique—you can feel her emotions. As I grow up, I start to realize I relate to more of her songs, and because of that, I am so grateful to Taylor. Her music is a blueprint to love and pain; in the good times and the bad, she is always there. I know Harry Styles may be the "villain" in this song. He and Taylor are on good terms now. Which I am so happy to hear, so I can listen to both of their music guilt-free, but that’s another essay. "Style" is an amazing song that you can sing to and just let go while listening to. When she finally takes this song back, I cannot wait to rediscover it all over again, just like the first time. Along with continuing the tradition of my mom and I's car concerts.

Coral reefs are the center of life in the ocean. Sadly, they are greatly threatened both through global warming, pollution, and over-fishing. This issue is often overlooked on the global stage for the bigger picture of things like sea levels rising and global warming. Though these issues are pressing, coral reefs provide an irreplaceable ecosystem for so many types of organisms. Along with the revenue produced from tourism, fishing, and such. Coral reefs are just too important to forget in our conversations about the environment. To start my effort, my energy would first be focused on stopping anymore damage from pollution and overfishing. This can be completed through stricter regulations and punishments for offenders of preventive measures already put in place. Along with rotating seasons for fishing, and a ban on commercial fishing vessels. Which allows not only for a greater supply of fish to reach adulthood and reproduce, but also a fair chance for smaller vessels. After this is accomplished, my energy will be diverted to the damage already done. We must find a way to restore the reefs to even a glimmer of their former glory. This can be done through greater research being conducted on regeneration, which has already been used in the Florida Keys to restore some of their reefs. Along with artificial reefs, which can include ship graveyards. These reefs stimulate growth by allowing a place for buds to take root and grow. Through these measures, there is a great chance for a resurgence of these reefs once on the edge of death. Throughout this process we can not forget about the pressing issue of global warming and climate change. I would continue to put energy into pushing for reform and policy change. This could be through calling local officials, or protesting. The only way effective change can occur is through long-term reform. That will protect not only the reefs, but the total ecosystem both today and in the future. My goal will be to affect the world positively one reef at a time. Protecting and regrowing as many as I can. Along with inspiring future generations to be as passionate about this issue as me. Hopefully, one day issues like these will not need to be prevalent. To reach that day, though, will take a lot of hard work. That work will be worth it though, so that one day our children and theirs will be able to enjoy what we hold so dear.
