Disability has shaped my life in absence, not proximity. My half-brother has severe autism, and because of the level of support he requires, I've never met him. He is non-verbal, unaware that he has a sister, and introducing that knowledge would disrupt the progress he has made. Loving him looks like supporting him from afar, a reality that has profoundly shaped my beliefs, my relationships, and the career path that I'm committed to pursuing. Understanding this, as I grew up, taught me early that disability is not something that exists in isolation; it affects entire families, decisions, and lives in ways that are often invisible to the outside world. I learned that progress does not always look like inclusion in the traditional sense; sometimes, it looks like restraint, patience, and putting someone else's needs above your own desire for connection. This experience shaped my belief that disability support must be individualized and not idealized. What works best for one person may not work best for another, and true advocacy requires listening rather than assuming. Being a supportive sibling over a long-distance has also had an impact on my approach to relationships. I have learned what it means to have empathy without expectation and to have unconditional love without recognition. I have come to realize that boundaries exist even when they are difficult or uncomfortable, and that just because you show care does not mean you have to have intimacy within a relationship. Thus, these experiences naturally forged me into a path of leadership through a sense of advocacy. I find myself quite often advocating on behalf of people with disabilities who are not able to advocate for themselves, especially in an educational capacity. Whether it be questioning presumptions, promoting an inclusive approach, or providing others with an understanding of autism or neurodiversity, I am a leader by advocating silently, being aware, and bringing about action, as opposed to recognition. My brother’s autism has definitely played a direct role in my own aspirations as I begin my educational journey. While I aspire to have a fulfilling career in the educational sector working with disability students with disabilities with different learning needs, I also hope to change the perception that students with disabilities feel like a burden because they need such assistance. I strongly believe that my role should extend to working with families as well. Even though I do not have a disability myself, my life has been greatly affected by disability, which has helped shape who I am and what I believe is valuable and meaningful. Having been able to support my brother despite the distance has been a valuable education for me, as I have realized the value of advocacy, not as a loud and public action, but as a necessary and intentional effort. As I continue to pursue my education, I am committed to using every tool at my disposal to honor my brother’s experience as I work towards developing systems that value differences and protect the dignity of every individual.

Leadership, to my mind, isn’t about standing on a stage at the front of a room; leadership is about scanning a room to see who’s been pushed to the edges and deliberately deciding to walk beside them. As an individual with special needs as a student, I realized early on in life that systems are not created with all individuals in mind and did, on many occasions, work twice as hard on all levels: to keep up, to advocate for myself, and to prove that I, as an individual with special challenges, did possess potential. It was these critical experiences that shaped what leadership means, before ever attaining such an accolade. I believe that what sets me apart as a leader is that I am willing to transform personal struggles into effective action. Rather than letting my learning differences hold me back, I have used these differences to help me better grasp how people learn, how people communicate, and how success varies in others, among other things. I recognize, in many settings, that I automatically fall into positions that enable me to help others, whether it is to assist someone in understanding their assignments, to motivate someone who is overwhelmed, or to advocate for someone else who may need accommodations, but these accommodations will benefit more than one student. Leadership also requires a degree of resiliency. Balancing higher education and special needs requires a degree of resiliency and adaptability. I have learned how to strategically use my time and request help when I need it most, all while staying focused and committed to my efforts. Keeping a high GPA despite all I face is something I take pride in, not because it signifies perfection on my part but because I demonstrate up and show out, even when it is hard to do just that. The other important quality associated with my leadership profile is my ability to listen. I understand the feel of struggling quietly, and I try my level best to be approachable and attentive because when people feel they are understood, they can engage and develop themselves. I think compassionate leadership has more potential and impacts more lives than authority-driven leadership. Most importantly, I possess a sense of purpose at the forefront. My life experiences as a special needs student have given me a passion for promoting education and equity within these communities. I dream of a world where accessibility is not reactive, but proactive and effortless for special needs students without having to fight for it. I hope to pursue my passion through an example and a fervent resolve to fight for these causes. Leadership means more than having the answers; it means having the courage to continue and persuade others to follow you on this journey. That is the kind of leader I have been, and that is the kind of leader I continue to strive to be, using my lived experience to create lasting change.

I learned to mask my frustration before I learned to ask for help. I thought that, for most of my life, school came easily. I attended, I did my best to complete my assignments, and I managed to keep my grades high enough that no one ever speculated about just how hard it was for me to keep up. They did not know about the extra time it took for things to process, about the late-night re-reading of assignments, or that quiet panic that occurred when things were happening too fast for my mind to keep up with them. I was afraid that, if I asked, I would be labeled incapable. The challenge was not only academic but also within myself as I struggled with a learning difference that made academic environments overwhelming. I felt as if I had to prove that I didn't need accommodations if I were going to succeed, as if receiving help proved I didn't belong in such learning environments. The same fears continued into my young adult academic preparation, as the stress of falling behind was all-consuming. The turning point came when I reached a moment of burnout. No matter how hard I worked, pretending as if everything was fine was getting worse. I realized resilience did not mean going through all of this alone. For the first time, I started advocating for myself. I did not hesitate to reach out to educators, ask questions, and learn to utilize all the resources available to me. It was all about change. Through this challenge, I had a great opportunity to grow as a person. I discovered how to learn best in relation to my own strengths and how to best use my time management skills while learning and communicating my needs effectively. I also discovered how to be confident in my own abilities. Above all, I discovered that a learning difference does not constitute a lack of intellectual capacity or ambitions; it simply requires a different tool. Again, having come from a low-income background makes this growth even more significant. I realized that I didn't have the privilege of failing quietly and giving up. I realized that all opportunities had to be taken and that all challenges had to be endured. I managed to turn what I perceived as a weakness, as a condition of being at a learning disadvantage, into something that I saw as a source of power. My experience has significantly influenced how I deal with situations today. I have come to realize that difficulties are not tantamount to failure. I have developed a habit of contemplating that sometimes, difficulties and unpleasantness are a pathway to growth. I have also realized that many students feel invisible in their respective learning environments, particularly those around learning differences. While the challenge itself did not fade into obscurity, I, as a person, grew more aware of myself and more determined to not only advocate for myself, but for those around me as well. As I continue on in my college life, I continue with the education and enlightenment this experience has taught me. With life, I have learned that success is not about ease, but about perseverance, asking for help when needed, and knowing without a doubt that no matter where I work hard enough to be, I deserve to be there.

The community of special needs was not some abstract entity to me; it was my family. My half-brother has severe autism, is non-verbal, and is oblivious even to our biological relationship. In many ways, however, he grew up to shape how I viewed the world. Observing him navigate a society that was not built with him in mind opened my eyes early to the gaps in education, accessibility, and understanding that people with disabilities have to face every day. Those gaps have been my reason for choice. I am currently pursuing an Education degree with the intent to work directly with students having special needs, especially within inclusive elementary school settings. Currently, I work in classrooms, witnessing firsthand how a lack of trained special education teachers, limited resources, and overcrowded classrooms are the aspects that most affect the children who need individualized support. Far too often, children with disabilities must adjust to systems that were never designed with them in mind, and very rarely do the systems adjust to accommodate them. My dream is to grow up to be a special education teacher who not only works with students on an academic level but also advocates for them on a structural level. I hope to establish a classroom environment in which a student with a disability is not tolerated or excluded but rather understood and empowered. I also believe that education is one of the best ways for positive change in society. I firmly believe that education should begin early. Children who learn alongside people of different abilities learn to empathize with those who are different. Outside of the classroom, my long-term goal is to be a part of curriculum development programs and teacher training programs. I believe that one of the most damaging barriers faced by children within our current special education system is not a lack of compassion, but a lack of training. I hope to be able to advocate for better training programs for our general education teachers so that inclusion is not simply a policy trend, but a meaningful one. Every teacher should be able to understand that all children have different learning styles. My drive stems from both a place of love and a place of frustration. Love of my brother and of the students I work with, and frustration at a system that fails, at times, to see the potential that those students have within themselves. I have witnessed firsthand the power of the right kind of support on an individual, as well as the destruction that a lack of said support can cause. And so, I refuse to simply sit idly by in this field. Kathleen Lehman's legacy, which was clearly built on compassion and advocacy, is the very kind of impact I want to leave on my community. I want you to know that it's not just the scholarship money that I need in order to attend school. I want you to know that an award like this not only helps me attend school but also enhances my ability to give back to a community that has already given my life purpose. I want to create a future where accessibility is the norm, inclusion is the standard, and those with special needs are valued not on what's lacking in them but on who they are.

I have come to realize that sometimes the bravest individuals in this world are necessarily those whose fight is unseen from our perspective, and pediatric brain tumor survivors are a level of bravery that changes how I understand resilience, meaning, and the future. Although I have never been someone affected by a diagnosis of a brain tumor myself, I have committed to studying childhood illness, injury, and resilience through my education pursuits, and because I truly believe I can be a teacher truly cognizant of the human patterns of every student in my classes. Pediatric brain tumor survivors such as Jessica have significantly influenced how I understand bravery and what it means to survive. Through my education, I’ve come to understand the lasting impact of medical issues during childhood on cognitive functions and development after receiving treatment. These individuals not only find themselves going to school with the scars of their treatment but with the shadow of anxiety, exhaustion, and learning gaps as well. Observing just how easily they can be overlooked in class and recognizing my desire to provide a classroom where their medical histories are not only accepted but accommodated instead of being restrictive to their development is what drives me to advocate for these individuals, despite not being one myself. One of the defining moments in my association with this cause came during my coursework on inclusive education. The case studies involved children who conquered childhood brain cancer only to find themselves struggling in school because their educators failed to grasp what they required. That kind of experience transformed me. Such a realization brought me to the acceptance that survival does not occur when treatment concludes. Moreover, being in education can either be part of survival or part of healing. In that instance, I realized that I could be that educator who recognizes, adjusts, and believes in a student’s capacity to conquer despite their illness. My goal for the future is to be an educator working towards the development of the whole child. It is my vision to be part of classrooms where medical or cognitive-challenged students feel comfortable seeking assistance with confidence and pride in their accomplishments. I will continue my academics to become an advocate for medically and cognitively challenged individuals through teachings related to trauma-informed education. Though I am not personally a survivor of cancer, my professional life will be committed to ensuring survivors are not remembered by their experiences but are empowered because of their triumphs. This scholarship award is about more than just funding. It’s about acknowledging the power of resilience and knowing that survivors have earned the opportunity to follow their dreams. To be the recipient of this scholarship award will be to continue my education and to prepare to be an ally, advocate, and educator for students on different journeys because they may be survivors as well. Though my path may be different, my resolve will not be because my purpose is to honor Jessica and to ensure that survivors like her are met with understanding and opportunity because of their strength.

The night I found out my best friend had passed away, my faith went from something I knew to something I knew I had to hold on to just to make it through each day. Ours is a kind of faith that can be shaken to its foundations by sorrow, but it is exactly when we are at our most shaken and vulnerable to the earthquakes of life that we must remember that faith is not something we know, but something we must hold on to. That is why this scholarship opportunity means so much to me, because it not only offers me finances to go to school but continues something in my life that has been forged and fueled by my faith. I was born and raised by a single mother who has sacrificed endlessly to provide me with options and experiences that she once felt were within her grasp as well. Seeing her struggle with financial struggles, tiredness, and uncertainty taught me the virtue of perseverance even before I understood it conceptually. Still, faith was also evident and quietly significant within our family, reminding us that difficult times would not always last and that even struggle can serve as a platform for something greater to grow from. I was just a high school student when my best friend, "Laney," died tragically in a car accident that would shatter everything I thought I knew about life and test my faith more severely than I would have ever anticipated. "She was more sister to me than best friend," I would come to explain later to someone interested enough to question, "a constant companion from youth through dance and then through years of cheerleading together." "When I lost her, I lost everything," I also said, and yet I would soon come to realize that this loss can serve as a moment instead when I choose to let it become so. My faith showed me, through my grief, how to continue. It somehow taught me to turn pain into compassion and sadness into motivation. I found the strength to believe that because Laney's life matters, mine must too, and honoring her means living with intention and in kindness and purpose. That mindset carried me through school and cemented my resolve to become a teacher. I want to be someone who supports students emotionally, academically, and spiritually, even if that simply means being a steady, caring presence in their lives. Faith has shown me that small acts of love and encouragement can have a lasting impact. This scholarship is about more than providing funds for my education. It is about trust. It celebrates the idea that faith and education can work in harmony. This scholarship will give me the ability to complete my education without the burden of struggling financially and will give me the gift of time to become the educator that I was meant to be. My goal for applying my faith would be to provide classrooms that are full of hope and resilience. As I move forward, my faith will remain a part of my decision-making process, my professional path, my reason for being. It is a reminder that even in times of pain, struggle, or unanswered questions, there is growth, significance, and an opportunity to empower others to move forward. What an honor it would be to keep living out this way, raising up the next generation, just as Jim Maxwell has, to live out their lives in a like way.

Every child and every student deserves to succeed, no matter the challenges they may be facing, and I would like to be the type of teacher who ensures that every child is seen, heard, and given the opportunity to succeed. Even though I personally do not have Neurofibromatosis or a learning disability, I have read and learned about the impact these have on the students and the importance of the educator being knowledgeable, accommodating, and advocating for the students in the class. The driving force behind my choosing to continue with further education in the field of teaching came from the idea of creating a learning environment in which every child, no matter if they have a learning disability, will be confident in their abilities and eager to learn and grow. In my coursework, I have learned strategies to ensure students with diverse learning needs can actually excel. In addition to coursework in teaching English language learners and students with autism, I have gained strategies to differentiate instruction. In having this knowledge, I have realized that education does not have to occur in a one-size-fits-all scenario or setting. Students with learning disabilities must be treated with patience, persistence, and motivation in order to maximize their potential. The knowledge that NF, as well as students with other learning disabilities, will one day be in my classroom inspires me to continue my education in preparing to make a difference in their lives. I believe I would be a good fit for this scholarship because my passion for education goes beyond the school setting. I would like to become a voice for students in general because I believe that every child must be allowed to become themselves, and their needs should be taken care of. It is not just about getting good grades in school that matters. It is about inculcating confidence and a passion for learning. This scholarship would give me the time to become the kind of teacher who can change lives because it would give me the chance to develop all the skills that are required for me to be that person. Ultimately, the result I wish to obtain through my educational experiences is the creation of inclusive classrooms where students such as NF can feel empowered in the pursuit of their dreams. It is my wish to be the teacher who takes notice of a student’s potential, even in the midst of difficulty, the teacher who celebrates their successes, no matter how small they seem, and makes them aware that their difficulties do not define them. The award of this scholarship would not only benefit me, but it would also enable me to return the favor in the form of paying it forward for the students who need it most, carrying forth the mission of Dylan.

In my life, there have been challenges that could have petered me out, but instead, they have only driven me to make a better life not only for myself but also for others. Growing up with one parent, as my mom raised me without a father in my life, taught me early on in life that life can be irregular and unfair, but this does not mean that one gives up. In my life, friends have struggled with mental issues as well as self-doubt, while even experiencing the loss of a loved one. Every one of these things in my life has only added fuel to my burning desire to make a difference in my own life by providing opportunities, as well as to make sure that those in my life have someone in their corner to lead them to success. To better align with my personal goals, I put my weight behind education, personal development, and community service. I am currently earning my degree in education, aiming to be an educator, an influencer, and a mold-er of the next generation. I took subjects related to educating those with autism and English language learners, acquiring techniques and methods to better cater to any and all students. But another aspect, aside from education, is to be an effective friend and role model, using my background to steer and advise others to hurdle successfully, whether it is great or seemingly insurmountable. I know that just like ripples, sometimes all it takes is a small push to change lives in ways that cannot be detected. This scholarship would give me the tools and the motivation to continue my education without the burden of financial worry. This would allow me to concentrate more on my education, my career, and how I, in turn, could use my education to help my pupils. But most importantly, it would give me the tools to become more than just a teacher; I would teach, but I would also give my children confidence, strength, and the idea that obstacles in their way do not define who they are. Paying it forward is the essence of my mission. Just as this scholarship symbolizes a second chance for me to fulfill my dreams, I aim to give back to my prospective students, friends, and fellow citizens. My goal is to create a learning atmosphere where every single child can be heard, seen, and counted, no matter what the circumstances that they may be going through. I aim to be a source of inspiration to students who might be struggling academically or socially, guiding them through the tough times, reminding them that failure is never the end, that a helping hand is just around the corner. I would like to implement change within my own life, not only for my benefit, but for the honor of those individuals who have shaped me along the way, for the friends whom I have lost, and for the students that I one day plan on teaching. Each move that I make in pursuit of my personal growth and achievement is one that serves to raise others along the way and initiate a positive chain reaction. This scholarship would not only benefit me in fulfilling my dreams, but would also enable me to continue the work that Nelson Vecchione initiated in offering a second chance at achieving success.

I have witnessed some of the people I care for most in life deal with mental health and substance abuse, and experiencing what they have been going through has greatly influenced who I have become today. Although I have never had to personally deal with substance abuse problems, watching some of my friends in their fight with addiction and what they have been going through in their lives has opened my eyes to realize how important their care and support are to aid in their recovery. I will never forget sitting in a room with a dear friend of mine, watching her fight to remain committed to staying straight. These are some of the experiences in my life that have shown me how important emotional support and care are for someone to heal from their ailments. Seeing others in their fight to regain their mental well-being has inspired me to take a further insight into mental well-being and consider how my college life can have a powerful influence in helping others out. Issues with mental health do not just pertain to substance abuse. From childhood, I had my own struggles that involved feelings of anxiety, doubt, and depression, particularly when I was in high school and during my time in college. Coping and managing those feelings would become an avenue for my personal growth and self-discovery. I learned to appreciate the importance of seeking help, whether that came from confiding in trusted people, journaling, or practicing mindfulness. I learned to identify my triggers and to build healthy coping mechanisms that allowed me to keep my feet on the ground while staying focused on my goals. My own learning and observations with mental health have contributed to informing what I want to do with my education and future work. I aspire to be a teacher because I recognize that school is more than a physical space where academic learning takes place; it is a community where youth feel noticed, supported, and empowered for success. I hope to foster a classroom environment where students feel free to be themselves, share thoughts and feelings without worry, and have access to guidance for optimal success. I recognize that a solid learning environment is more than instruction and assessment; it is a foundation of empowerment through knowledge and support. In continuing my own personal growth in mental wellness, I look forward to continuing with practices that benefit my mental health. I look forward to learning even more about mental wellness practices, so I can better support my students, colleagues, and community when I move forward with my life. Through cultivating safe spaces and spreading awareness about mental wellness, I hope to help those who struggle with hope. I hope not only to educate my students but to empower them with strength, with empathy, with self-confidence, allowing the next generation to live with mental, emotional, and social success. Ultimately, my knowledge about mental health and recovery shaped my life's mission: to listen to, support, and empower others to rise through adversities. Be it through teaching, mentoring, or just being able to provide a comfortable presence, I would like to make sure that each and every individual with whom I connect knows they are noticed, heard, and appreciated. The consequences of poor mental health motivated me to want to help people in dedicating my life to helping people, which carries into every area of education, growth, and future career.

I will never forget the night that my then-boyfriend, a referee of high school basketball games in his spare time, experienced a refereeing disaster turned comedy gold. In the middle of a fast-paced game, with his referee whistle blowing and his commands ringing out to keep the game in hand, disaster struck when his pants split down the side. In the middle of the third quarter, there he was, freezing for a split second before deciding to either totally lose it or roll with the punches. In a split second, with the game on the line and his dignity in tatters, he hightailed it to the sidelines, snatched a stapler from a protesting coach, and stapled his pants back in place before dashing back out on the floor as if nothing were amiss. The crowd went wild with laughter, and the players didn't miss a beat. Seeing him roll with the punches and keep the game moving, no matter the challenge, taught me that refereeing a game is more than just enforcing the rulebook; it's developing the skills of composure, problem-solving, and game movement, no matter the circumstances. To be a referee, however, you need more than just know-how; you need leadership, sportsmanship, and integrity. I have learned firsthand through my boyfriend's experiences on the court how important it is to remain composed, respect all players and coaches, and take responsibility for your actions. Each game is unique, with each case requiring resilience, adaptability, and strong communication skills. Even something as comical as falling apart at the seams might teach you how to learn from your mistakes with your head held high. These are lessons not only applicable on the court but in life as well. In my observation, involvement with officiating can be instrumental in building confidence, enhancing leadership qualities, and developing critical thinking skills. The referees are essentially the backbone of the match because they are responsible for handling conflicts and ensuring fairness. Observing this process at work has led me to realize the importance of being part of activities or activities at school or elsewhere where there are elements of responsibility, fairness, and empathy, because this will enable me to be part of activities where officiating qualities are essential in my future professional life. In the future, I look forward to continuing my efforts with referees and sports activities in my community, perhaps as a tutor for young referees or sports enthusiasts, or even just in attendance at sports events, encouraging sportsmanship in my community. That evening with the torn pants has taught me, however, that leadership is not necessarily about being perfect but rather about leading through adversity with strength, ingenuity, and sportsmanship. This is something I look forward to passing on to others when I take on my own mantle in life despite its unexpected turns.

The first time I truly comprehended the value of having a person in my life who would always be there for me was when I was listening to Pap tell stories of his experiences in the Air Force on his porch. My grandfather, Bill Bryan, was a man who proudly served for a long time, and the stories he told weren’t just about the planes he flew or the work he did during his time in the Air Force; they were about things such as the value of strength, the value of following rules, and the value of being there for the people you love. One of the summer afternoons, I recall Pap telling me the story of how, in the initial training he underwent, he and his team were assigned an impossible mission. He said as if the universe had conspired against them, everything possible went wrong, but instead of letting their fears get the betterhand, they chose to lean on one another, remain calm, and trust their training. Just as he finished the story, he looked at me with a grin and said, ‘Sidney, life is going to unleash its storms on you, but the difference will be in how you deal with the situations and the company you have with you.’ I didn’t know the significance of the story and the lessons he inculcated in me as I listened to the story, but trust me, I am carrying these with me every day. However, another quality of Pap's was his funny personality, which comes out in his stories. Remember him talking about how he would sneak back into the base kitchen late at night to trade sugar packets for salt in a prank war he had going with another airman. It made him laugh so hard at the memory that I couldn't help chuckling along. These stories have shown me that even in very strict and organized settings, there is always a place for happiness and laughter. From Pap, I have learned to live in harmony in a world in which both hard work and having fun are essential. Through his service, Pap taught me what commitment and sacrifice truly mean, but through his stories, I came to understand that lifetime lessons often weave their way between laughs and reflective moments. Growing up under Pap's mentorship and guidance shaped the person I am today: one who holds dear the values of family, responsibility, and hard work but knows that humor and joy are important, too. Each story that comes out of his mouth has a mark; every lesson passed on is a reminder to always face challenges in life courageously and with poise. I am forever grateful for the role he has played in my life, for the wisdom he shares, and for the love and guidance he provides as my Pap, mentor, and father figure.

The most difficult day of my life was when I lost my best friend, Laney, in a car accident during our senior year of high school. She was a year older than me, but we grew up like sisters, dancing and cheerleading together for over a decade. We shared everything from our dreams to struggles, our laughter and our secrets, and always promised to be there for each other through thick and thin. But losing her so suddenly, right before graduation, left a void in my life that I didn’t have a clue how to fill. Losing her taught me a valuable life lesson in how to move forward in a way that honored her memory and helped me appreciate the life and people I have in a more meaningful way. She taught me the value of life and holding every moment with the people who matter to me because, in the end, it is love and connection that give meaning to our lives, and in death, we continue to remember the people we value by being the best versions of ourselves and making a positive impact in people's lives and in the world around us. Her memory and lessons have significantly affected the manner in which I plan to achieve my goals, interact with people, and pursue my career in life because, in every aspect, I remember and take with me the memory of someone very special in my life, someone I had always strived to be there for, named Laney. This loss has also driven me to become a teacher for a more meaningful and significant reason. I would like my students to feel cared about and encouraged in school so that they can succeed and achieve their dreams. I, too, have known the feelings of being vulnerable and the nightmare of experiencing pain. I would like my students to feel that I, too, believe in them and that the whole world is not scary and impossible. Losing my Laney made me realize that sometimes the most difficult times in our lives can be turned into something that serves as our source of inspiration and motivation in helping others succeed. Finally, this experience of grief has taught me about resilience and perseverance. Even in the midst of heartbreak, I was able to move ahead in school, in dance, and in cheer, and in all that I set my heart and mind to, in some way keeping her memory alive by seeking excellence in all that I do. My sister’s life, though cut short in so tragically a manner, is now something that I am learning to live with because in that life, I find the ability to draw strength in knowing that in the depths of grief and heartbreak, there is always the possibility to increase, to give, and to make a difference. My sister Laney is in my heart always, and my goal in life should be to live in her memory by spreading love and making a difference in the lives of everyone that crosses my path.

My “Pie in the Sky” dream is to create a classroom environment where every child feels visible, appreciated, and empowered to achieve their dreams, no matter what their background, skills, or circumstances might be. I hope to be that teacher who not only teaches students, but motivates and inspires them to believe not only in what they are learning, but in themselves as well, and challenges and modifies her teaching approach so that she is not afraid of questions and is welcoming of challenges as opportunities for growth and learning as well. My dream is both exhilarating and elusive as it transcends my classroom and my school, as it has the potential of touching and change future generations who become doctors, lawyers, and leaders when they grow up. This dream was fostered growing up as an only child with a single mom who sacrificed so much for me. Watching her work tirelessly to provide for me and sacrifice so much of her own dreams instilled the value of perseverance and how one person's dedication can change the course of another person's life. Simultaneously, losing my best friend Laney in a high school car accident taught me about the fragility of life and how we can affect one another deeply. These experiences showed me that every child deserves someone in their corner who believes in them, and I want to be that person. In pursuit of this dream, I have been trying to better myself in terms of academic, emotional, and professional development. I take lectures aimed at learning educational strategies, educating English learners, and dealing with students with different needs, including students with special needs. I have been able to develop skills on how to create friendly classrooms for students with different abilities with conducive learning environments for creativity, curiosity, and confidence to thrive. Apart from my academic pursuits, I participate in community services, mentorship among younger students, and personal development activities aimed at gaining different perspectives, mostly empathy. Looking forward, I recognize that the pursuit of my own “Pie in the Sky” goal means I need to continually develop, persist in the face of adversity, and muster the strength to move forward. I look forward to finishing my educational degree, growing as a professional, and promoting inclusive models of learning. I would like to use my experiences to encourage other teachers and share methods regarding how to help students, while hopefully building a network of educational professionals who can support each other along the way. Through my own “Pie in the Sky” goal pursuit, I hope I can create my own classroom environments that encourage my students to chase their own “Pie in the Sky” too. At the very end, my dream is about making an enduring difference that long outlives me. My dream is about having the kind of courage and creative vision that will not let anything, not even I, hold me back. With each passing day that I work toward this dream, I move ever closer to that vision of the future, where no child is ever bound by his/her circumstances and where the potential is to be something truly special.

Some of the most important lessons that I have learned about resilience, patience, and understanding have been through observing the challenges that others have faced rather than through experiences of my own struggles. While I am not a member of the neurodiverse community myself, I have had the privilege of growing up among others, both personal friends, schoolmates, and students, who have had to move through the world with various types of learning difficulties. Living among people with different needs has been a lesson for me in what empathy can be like. I have observed how, sometimes, just giving people a little leeway or extra consideration can turn someone’s whole experience around. But I have also understood what can happen to people when they are cut off from society or just not understood, which has reinforced within me my role as an advocate for those people. Therefore, all my interactions have been infused with awareness, kindness, and an intention to empower. I want to translate these lessons into action and build classrooms where every student, regardless of ability, feels seen, valued, and capable of achieving their goals. I aim to include inclusive strategies, differentiated instruction, and support for students with disabilities or learning differences in order to achieve equal opportunities for all students. Moreover, I want to create respect, empathy, and advocacy among the students so they grow into a generation that knows the worth of inclusion in all aspects of society. Although I do not live this life myself, since I get to experience the struggles of other individuals, which makes me understand my goal clear: to impact the environment with my education to make equity and justice not something desirable but something standard. Who knows? Perhaps I can be part of the change where I will be pushing for effective resources and policies for succeeding students, educating them to appreciate their differences, as they themselves will be equipped to make a difference by themselves. In addition to advocating on behalf of students, I have made it my personal campaign to educate not only myself but those around me on awareness of disability and neurodiversity. I believe it is vital for me to not only educate myself but also educate others on awareness of disability. By doing this, I hope to create a ripple effect, meaning I hope I can inspire other advocates not only in my school but in every community I visit. This is because my goal is not only to leave a positive effect on my classroom but also to create change in schools by ensuring every individual has the opportunity to succeed.

I have been able to absorb some of the most important lessons with respect to strength, courage, and compassion, not from my own experiences, but from watching the struggles of another individual or group. Though I myself do not have any physical disability, I have friends and classmates who have struggled through life with challenges that most of us do not even consider to be a struggle. Seeing their strength and courage in the face of their physically limited abilities, their tolerance with a world that is often difficult and uncompromising with respect to their accessibility needs, and their struggles to pursue their dreams despite the odds has completely transformed my perception of the world around me. Being involved with those in the disabled community has opened my eyes to inequalities in society that those with physical disabilities have to contend with. Inequality in class, isolation, and having their needs disregarded are but a few issues in which society today fails to provide equal opportunity. Being a part of this has taught me a great deal about having empathy with those in this community. The values of being able to listen carefully to those around me, to celebrate small victories, and to have a creative way of solving challenges are but a few. These are some of the things that I aim to take with me when I become a teacher in the future. What I aim for in my classroom is a situation where all of my students feel counted and empowered, and this is regardless of what their skills and strengths may be. I aim for a classroom where differences are not only accepted but celebrated, and students with physical and learning disabilities feel empowered and prepared for success. It is from what I have learned through observing the disabled community that I aim for my students not only to succeed as students but as compassionate human beings as well, ones who can use their influence for good and for making a difference wherever they go. Although I have never been personally confronted with the challenges that a physical disability presents, it is no secret that a disability can present a multitude of challenges. However, it is the strength that comes from the faces of the disabled that has made a significant impact on the perspective that I have. This is the perspective that trains me to be patient, adaptable, and most of all, a voice, not just for myself, but for the people that surround me, which will inspire the minds that I teach.

The fate of our communities is in the individuals that we raise in this generation, and as a classroom teacher, I can see daily the impact that the examples and teachings that I present in my classroom can make in influencing the leaders, professionals, and activists of the next generation. Even though I do not practice law, I feel confident that I am helping to create the next generation of leaders in the fields of law, healthcare, law enforcement, and activism in my classroom because I am inspiring my students to think critically, live ethically, and take a stand for justice. The trajectory of my educational career is based on the aim of instilling empathy, resilience, and a moral sense of responsibility in the children that I teach. This means that, instead of just focusing on educating myself on how to teach academics, I have set out to learn more about how to teach life skills. This education involved learning about how to teach the skill of resilience, learning about ways to reach English learners, learning about the psychology of having a classroom full of different types of learners, and learning about ways that a classroom can be inclusive. This is all essential information that anyone aspiring to be a legal advocate should know. However, outside of academia, it is important to me to be a role model in matters of integrity, fairness, and respect. As someone who has witnessed firsthand the power of students modeling what they observe in their own lives, it gives me great pause to take my own responsibility seriously to model what ethical leadership might look like. In doing so, it is my hope to build a classroom culture where students might model themselves after a campus community that promotes values in those areas. As far as my own plans, I would hope that my influence would extend well beyond a classroom setting. As a teacher, I would hope that in addition to knowledge, my students take with them confidence, courage, and a sense of responsibility to advocate on their own behalf as well as the behalf of others. Whether one grows up to be a lawyer fighting for justice, a physician saving lives, or a leader shaping public policy, it matters to me that they are well-versed in principles that we as teachers are instilling in students. In embarking on this mission to strive for excellence within education and developing the potential within each student, I am confident that I am working towards creating a brighter future with individuals who will make our legal system and our world an even greater force for good within our society.

Some of the most difficult lessons I have learned have been from the struggles, which have largely gone unseen by the world around me. Raised as an only child with just my mother, I have seen the countless efforts she put into taking care of my needs, even if it sometimes meant putting her own aspirations on the shelf in order to give me the chance to pursue activities like dance, cheer, and other extracurricular activities. At the same time, I struggled with mental and emotional health issues related to the absence of my father in my life as well as the untimely death of my best friend, Laney, in high school. I could have let these challenges get the best of me, but instead, I chose to overcome these challenges with resolve instead of being ruled by them. To continue working towards my ambitions with regard to teaching, I have done things to ensure that I have stayed focused and have been resilient throughout my path towards teaching. I have made use of resources available to me when I needed them, and I have also come to understand the importance of working through my emotions instead of denying them. I have also put mechanisms in place that have aided me in dealing with stress, whether through the balancing act between academics and dance and/or cheer, or through goal-setting and the celebrating of small victories along the way. Where I have felt overwhelmed, I have always tried to focus on the fact that my struggles may become a strength for my students when I become a teacher. I have academically challenged myself, taking courses that prepare me to work with all types of students, including those with special needs and English learners. I've dedicated myself to learning strategies that allow me to create a safe, supportive, and inclusive classroom-even on the hardest days. Through channeling my personal experiences into my education, I turned adversity into motivation, developing patience, resilience, and a commitment to helping others thrive. In the end, each of these challenges has strengthened my love for teaching and how challenges are opportunities in the making. Each problem-my mother's sacrifices, the pain of losing Laney, and not having a father figure-has furthered this insight that strength isn't an absence of fight; instead, it is the will and determination to keep going, to keep learning, and continue striving toward your dream. These are the very things that drive my ambition to become that kind of teacher who will lead, support, and enable students against their tribulations with bravery and determination.

I can never forget the moment I understood that life can change rapidly, and it is always essential to cherish the little things and moments of our lives. Since I was an only child, I used to observe my single mom working diligently to take care of us, making sacrifices left and right just to ensure I continued my lessons in dance, practices in cheerleading, and participated in various activities. Though our funds were low, and I often worried that I would not be able to do all the things I desired to do, learning to appreciate and pursue my dreams is what caused me to become the woman I am today. Stamp collecting has been one of the secret pleasures that has sustained me during these periods. What appears to be a humble pastime has actually opened the world out to me, allowing me access to the world through the stories of its cultures. Every postage stamp holds a story, and collecting them has taught me the value of being curious, of being detail-oriented, and of valuing the past. I have found solace in stressful situations by being with the postage stamps, which remind me of the value of noticing the minute detail, of paying tribute to the effort put into something, of living life with sensitivity. What this scholarship will do for me is give me the means to keep on with my education, attaining my dreams, while at the same time making a difference in the world. I, a future teacher, aim to establish a classroom environment where I inspire my pupils to cultivate their passions, just as collecting stamps has opened the world’s doors to me. I hope to be a source of inspiration for the children, encouraging them in their own way, with an open sense of wonder, inventiveness, and curiosity. With the financial assistance I receive, I can devote time not only to teaching but to changing the lives of my pupils. The process of overcoming, learning patience, and finding inspiration even in small things like stamp collecting helped shape my worldview and future career. I want to be the kind of educator who fosters curiosity, applauds effort, and inspires the next generation to pursue their dreams, no matter what obstacles they may face. This scholarship represents not only an opportunity to further my education, but it also represents ways to carry life lessons into the classroom to help students connect with, grow, and feel empowered every day.

The ocean has always been my classroom, teaching me lessons about patience and perseverance, and respect. Growing up near the water, I've spent untold hours observing the rhythms of the tides and currents, and I've learned that the same principles guiding life on shore-patience, resilience, care for the environment-are operative in communities and classrooms. I may not have competed in any fishing tournaments, but I understand the values that make an angler not only skilled but honorable: dedication, integrity, and respect for the world around you. I try to show all these values in my daily life in my community. I volunteer to help younger students, support my peers, and am part of group projects with a strong work ethic and teamwork. I do this through organizing activities for kids, helping classmates through challenges, or encouraging others to participate and grow. I go into everything with a great work ethic and a sense of fairness. I feel that sportsmanship is not only about competing but also about uplifting others, helping those around you, and displaying integrity with every action one takes. These attributes influence me in any setting, be it volunteer work or even a leadership role within the classroom. Although I am a relatively inexperienced fisherman, I believe I can relate the teachings of the water to the attributes this award recognizes. It takes patience to wait for the right time to help someone in need. It takes focus and perseverance to overcome challenges, whether in school or in life. It takes respect for nature to respect the individuals I meet in life, recognizing the part they have to play in achieving success. I am proud to say I hold myself accountable, persevere, and treat others with kindness and honesty, whether in group efforts or simply in life. I hope that I am able to carry these traits with me throughout all facets of my future. The values that entail character, sport, and work ethic reach far beyond the fishing boat or tournament, and instead speak to the values that we take regarding those around us. Though I, personally, may not ever cast a line in competition, I know that I have committed to building trust, encouraging those around me, and persevering in the face of adversity, and that I am living with the same values that Travis Ely did. Through applying these lessons from the ocean and my experiences in my community, I make every effort to live up to the ideals of dedication, sportsmanship, and character that this award honors. Each act of service, or simple word of encouragement, becomes a wave, like those crashing on the shore, reminding me that even I have the power to make a difference.

The first time I ever understood that life could change without warning was the day I lost my best friend, Laney Zambri, in a car accident driven by an intoxicated driver. Laney was more than just my friend; she was my sister, my dance and cheer partner, and my confidant, and she had been there with me in every triumph and struggle I faced during my high school years. We had grown up sharing countless hours in dance studios, practice rooms, and bleachers, and we had always known that I was her sister and that she was my sister, and I had just witnessed the shattering of the world I knew with her sudden passing the week before her graduation. Dealing with this pain, this grieving for someone so close to me, so young, has absolutely molded me into the person I am today. Initially, this pain felt like it was all-encompassing, like it could not be dealt with. Even everyday tasks were hard, and happiness seemed like an impossibility. But the more I reflected, I understood that pain isn’t just about giving but about teaching, too. Losing Laney has actually made me more understanding, more patient, and more aware of the emotional needs of those around me, and Laney is in everything I do. Her passing has also had an impact on the choices I make about my life path. I want to be a teacher so that I can be the one person within my classrooms’ walls who sees and hears the students when they are struggling on an emotional, academic, or social level. I know from experience just how difficult it can be to lose someone when they are so young. I would like to be the foundation for my students when they are struggling or uncertain about their path forward so that they can feel the same kind of comfort and sense of direction. This is one way for me to ensure the memory of my sister Laney is remembered as one of making a difference. At the same time, I have been able to use my grief to help others in ways outside of the academic setting. Through my friendships, sporting groups, and general peer circles, I have been able to ensure that people who have been through similar times in their lives can come to me for support, and have been able to allow others to see through my example what can be achieved to honor someone from their life. Although losing Laney has created a void in my life, something that can never be filled, I know that I am still influenced by the presence of Laney every day. It is because the spirit of Laney drives me to live life with kindness, compassion, and commitment, and it is on account of the presence of Laney in my life that I want to be a teacher who not only grows my students academically but also in other respects.

Life gets the best of us in the most unexpected ways, sometimes providing us with the opportunity for empathy, patience, and gratitude concerning certain struggles in life that we never have to personally experience. While personally I have never been impacted directly by a related experience regarding mast cell disease, I have witnessed associated struggles among friends within my own educational community. It is through these observations that I have become most aware of the strength required for resilience within life when things get turned upside down. Among the things I am most grateful for, having learned from these experiences, is the capacity to reach out to people on a more profound level. To see people dealing with what the rest of us consider normal limitations has taught me the value of patience, the value of compassion, and the value of celebrating each minuscule success. It has also opened my eyes to the value of having the right support system, to know the difference one act of kindness, one attentive ear, one gesture of thoughtfulness makes. It is not only my dealings with people that have changed, but also my plans regarding my future career path in teaching, where I will make sure each student, no matter their abilities, is acknowledged, appreciated, and empowered. I am also thankful for the level of awareness that this perspective has provided me with concerning the struggles that people have daily. This perspective has led me to focus on the ways that we can make a difference through small means, whether it be through advocacy, shifting our expectations, or just empathizing. Now, instead of seeing barriers, we can see challenges that give us opportunities. Although I have not personally experienced mast cell disease, I have cultivated empathy, strength, and a perspective that might never have been possible for me otherwise. I am grateful for the skills and the principles that I have learned through observation, listening, and comprehension of a different experience, and I hope to take these skills with me into my profession. By providing a supportive, inclusive, and caring environment, I hope to make a difference in the lives of others who have been limited or blocked in some way and to make them feel capable and confident every step of the way. What excites me most is the realization that challenges we have never had to overcome might be the very things that influence how we make a difference in the world. Realizing that some students have experiences in life that are defined by challenges such as mast cell disease makes me realize that education, opportunity, and empowerment do not mean the same thing to everyone. This is fueling a fire within me that makes me want to be that one individual who fights for inclusion, who champions accessibility, who recognizes the need that might be overlooked, and who makes a difference, no matter which struggle it may be. This has caused me to realize that it is the struggle, the obstacle, the barrier, that might need to be overcome to make a difference in the life of someone else, that might be the catalyst that leads me to give everyone the chance to pursue their dreams, to be empowered, and to know that their goals are the right goals.

One of the most significant things I’ve learned about mental health issues, however, is through my personal struggles, as well as the experiences of the most significant individuals in my life. In other words, as someone who lacked the presence of their father and their single mother raised them, I had my fair share of situations involving anxiety, uncertainty, and personal doubts, which, at times, I did not know how to deal with in life. Yet, I have always ensured I created an environment where I could be there for my friends, classmates, and other peer groups as someone they could talk to when dealing with stress, anxiety, and other related difficulties. Whether it was supporting a friend through a difficult time of losing someone they knew and cared for in their family, helping classmates seek counseling when they felt overwhelmed in school, or simply checking in with someone who may have been sitting alone at lunch, I have discovered firsthand how much having someone care can affect someone’s mental well-being. It is because of this experience that I strive to be a concerned listener in every conversation I have with others, because I understand how important each person’s experience is to them. The areas of safety and support are where I will continue to advocate for mental well-being as I progress in my career in education. I want my classroom to provide kids with a space to feel seen, heard, and understood; where their emotions can be vented without judgment, and where stress-reducing and resilience-building techniques are taught. By marrying my training as an educator with personal experience and insight on the topic of mental health, my aspirations are to support students, colleagues, and families in the creation of environments that value emotional well-being. Ultimately, my goal is to be a professional who understands the inherent value of mental health in all aspects of my everyday life. I would like to be able to encourage the individuals in my life to seek help and not be afraid to voice their feelings. In keeping my passion at the forefront of my professional endeavors for not just education but for advocacy as well, I would like to leave my mark in my community and make a positive impact on the collective emotional well-being of those that I meet in my lifetime.

I've been a Sabrina Carpenter fan for as long as I can remember. It started when I watched her perform as Maya Hart on Girl Meets World. She had so much wit and humor in her one-liners, which really drew me to her and made me enjoy watching her go through the trials and tribulations of life. Maya wasn't just a character to me; she was somebody I could relate to because of her sense of humor and her smarts, and Sabrina channeled her so accurately. As I grew older, my appreciation for Sabrina has only increased. I have been fortunate enough to attend her concerts twice during her Short n Sweet Tour, and it has been an experience I will never forget. As a performer, Sabrina is electric, her singing is perfect, and her fan interactions are irrefutable. As a fan, my personal favorite song, Tornado Warnings, is an absolute demonstration of her knack for effortlessly mingling truth, feeling, and a pinch of naughty, goofy fun, all in one, and it’sbeen a treat to experience its live rendition, an affirmation of her immense skill set. But apart from all her glorious qualities, what I find most lovable about her is her humor, quirks, and grounded nature in interviews, fan interactions, and other social media platforms. I believe the impact that Sabrina’s career has had on me would be in several aspects. I have seen the importance she gives to working so hard, being versatile, and remaining the same person even as she moves into new roles and challenges. I have also seen the way she transitioned from being the star of the Disney Channel to being a known musician and actress, and the inspiration to move towards my goals with the same sense of determination and creativity. Ultimately, Sabrina Carpenter is a fan of mine because she inspires me to laugh, think, and feel motivated at the same time. Sabrina Carpenter has been a symbol of what it means to be a strong female influence as a model for how to be different and pursue your dreams and find joy along the way, and this inspires me to be this symbol for other people in my own life as well.

Ever since I first saw Taylor Swift perform on the Fearless Tour in 2009 in Los Angeles, I have been captivated not just by her music but by her ability to make every fan feel seen and understood. Over the years, I have studied her albums, the lyrics, and been blown away by her concerts, but the one that touched me the most was the surprise concert she gave back on June 8, 2024, at the Eras Tour in Scotland. This was not a concert that I was in attendance at, although I was following it live on the TikTok livestream. The performance was a mashup of “The Bolter” and “Getaway Car,” followed by a seamless blending of “All of the Girls You’ve Loved Before” and “Crazier.” The way she transitioned between the songs, each with its own story and energy, was breathtaking. I remember being completely absorbed, feeling every word as if it were meant for me and every fan watching around the world. And even across a thousand miles, I felt the energy and the vulnerability, the magic. It was a moment that reminded me why I love her music, why I closely follow her artistry, and why I think her ability to connect with fans goes beyond the realm of entertainment-it changes feelings, memories, and the world shared among us. It was the Eras Tour surprise set in Scotland that touched me more than any other performance, probably because it reminded me more than ever that music is not about the sound; it's about connection, emotion, and storytelling at its finest. I have never met my half-brother Jack because his autism is so severe, but the lessons I’ve learned from it have deeply impacted the person I am and the person I hope to become. Learning that his life is filled with struggles that most people can’t even imagine has driven me to spend my life giving people with intellectual disabilities the chance to succeed, understanding, and giving support to those who face struggles every day, as Jack does. His life has taught me about the values of being an advocate, understanding, and inclusion, and it has given me the passion to pursue a life dedicated to education in which I can make every child feel valued and capable, regardless of their abilities. Raised as the only child with a single mother, I saw firsthand the struggles associated with having the ability to support and educate those who need additional support. Though I did not have the direct experience associated with caring for my half-brother, learning about the reality of someone with such severe autism has made me painfully aware of the void that exists when it comes to intellectual disabilities within the areas of education, public infrastructure, and public awareness. I hope to be the teacher who not only sees the strengths in each child but is able to provide them with the tools and resources associated with learning while ensuring that no child falls through the cracks. The coursework I have been undertaking this semester further reinforces the way that I should teach my pupils if they have intellectual and developmental differences. I have learned how to modify my lessons, how to structure my teaching, and how to ensure a classroom environment where pupils feel safe. I have studied how to recognize the needs of the pupils, how to teach them to become self-independent but guided, and how to communicate effectively with parents for the development of the child. I find how I have been taught reinforces the way that I believe a teacher should treat every child, one who is patient, creative, and committed. As I look to make a difference in society, my concern is to make an inclusive atmosphere for kids with intellectual disabilities, celebrating their unique talents and abilities, nurturing them for their maximum potential. As I plan my role in society, I intend to be an advocate for those kids, making sure they have all the facilities and chances to succeed not only in academics but in society as well. Apart from academics, I plan to bring self-confidence, independence, and resilience to all my kids, teaching them to appreciate themselves. While never having been a caregiver to my half-brother, his life has affected me in ways that have framed my career goals, my values, and my sense of empathy and compassion. What I do know is that this quality sparks within me the desire to spend my life serving the intellectual disability community, advocating for inclusion, and making sure students of all abilities are seen, heard, and empowered. As a teacher, I have the intent to make an indelible mark on not just the lives of the children I teach but, most importantly, on the culture of education itself: one that embraces diversity of ability and facilitates the success of every student.

As far back as I can remember, I knew that no two children are alike and that teaching is so much more than imparting information to students. It is about recognizing their worth and presence within the world. As someone who grew up as an only child to a single mother, I not only understand the impact of teaching and mentoring someone to grow their confidence within life, but also know from my experiences just how significantly one person can change the life of another because of their guidance and understanding. In addition to this, my brother is autistic, and although I’ve never been able to meet him because of the severe nature of his disability, knowing his life and experiences has had a profound impact on my understanding of teaching and just why it is so essential to create an understanding and welcoming classroom. Professor Harold Bloom’s statement, “I have learned that the purpose of teaching is to bring the student to his or her sense of his or her own presence,” resonates deeply with me. To me, this means helping students understand that their thoughts, voices, and contributions matter, and that they belong not just in the classroom, but in the world. Every student has strengths, interests, and potential, even if they do not always fit into the traditional mold of learning. A teacher’s mission is to recognize these strengths, guide students in exploring them, and create an environment where they can fully express themselves and grow. In my classroom, I hope to teach the students to realize the importance of their own presence in class by creating a trusting, respectful, and curious environment to begin with. I plan to establish relationships with the students and learn about how they prefer to communicate, the things that motivate them, and the manner in which they experience the world. I would like to establish a sense of accomplishment in the students, recognizing their success and the importance of their hard work, big and small. In the case of disabled students, it would be important to present the lessons in a unique and interesting manner or to provide more encouragement to make them feel as if they belong, and to be able to accomplish the same things as the others. I personally believe that teaching is both an art and a science. It needs to be done with utmost patience, creativity, and understanding, as well as the utmost desire to see the growth and well-being of every child in the class. I would want to be the kind of teacher who could deal with every child in the class in their own way, help them realize their potential, and give them the confidence to do so themselves. In this way, I would be helping these children learn to explore the world around them with confidence, resilience, and pride in themselves. To conceptualize this mission in a magical sense, I like to imagine a fairy tale: "In a far-off kingdom, there existed a teacher with a magical golden lantern that could illuminate the invisible spark within every child. Some Sparks were brightly lit but trembled with fear, some were just a tiny flicker peering out from beneath shadows, some seemed invisible altogether. But this special teacher walked among her class with this lantern close to her heart, gently whispering words of empowerment, carving paths for light out of darkness. With every word, every gesture, every waiting moment, the sparks began to ignite. Gradually, the young ones realized they could illuminate themselves, that their thoughts and abilities counted, that they could make a difference in their world. Suddenly, the kingdom would be filled with radiance, with giggles, and with confidence, and this magical teacher could watch, smiling, knowing that her mission in this magical kingdom wasn’t to be the source of all light itself but to provide every child with the spark they have inside them all along." Teaching is my passion because it integrates my passion for learning with my passion for helping others grow and develop. Teaching is more than just imparting learning to others, and I hope to develop learning environments in which all children feel welcomed and supported, in which every child is encouraged to find his or her own special light, and in which learning is inextricably linked with the values of confidence, creativity, and self-awareness. By directing children to acknowledge their own presence in the world, I hope to make a real difference in their lives and to teach them to understand that they possess the capacity to accomplish things that the world may not necessarily recognize or acknowledge.

Some nights, I lie awake in our tiny apartment, staring at the ceiling, thinking about how I would pay rent, groceries, and still manage to purchase dance shoes and cheerleading outfits, all while completing college and being the mother my child deserved. Being a single mother has been, by far, the most difficult job I have ever undertaken, but being a mother has never brought me more pride or meaning. Since bringing my child into this world, I have understood that my personal dreams would have to be postponed, but I have worked tirelessly to ensure that I could provide my child with a life that would enable us to thrive. There were days when I woke up before dawn to go to work and yet ended up driving my kid to their dance class or cheer practice later in the afternoon. This was after working through the night since my body was drained, but my heart was full of hope and love for this little thing I had created. I can recall days when I skipped meals because I had to travel for so long in order to attend to this kid at school or at home because they needed this or that from their mother. Seeing this kid smile and thrive made all the struggles worthwhile. Balancing school life with family life is never simple, but I have learned to schedule every waking moment wisely, focusing on what I need most, while not losing track of the bigger picture. Child happiness and success have always been my goal, but I understand the importance of my personal degree not only for me but also for my child, who should see that with hard work and commitment, even when life gets crazy, my dream can come true. This scholarship opportunity would truly be life-altering since it would enable me to focus on my studies without having to stress over how I might be able to stretch each dollar even further than before in order to provide for my needs. I would finally have the opportunity to concentrate on my studies while, at the same time, being the mother my son needs. I would be able to complete my educational program with the assurance that I would be giving my son every opportunity in life by demonstrating to him through example how sacrifice results in reward. Raising a child alone has taught me compassion, patience, and resilience, and it has strengthened my determination to achieve my goals. Every late night, every skipped meal, and every exhausted morning behind the wheel was a step toward creating a better life for both of us. Completion of this degree is not just personal success but an opportunity to prove to my child that even through hardship, dreams are possible, goals are reachable, and love and determination can get you through anything. I'm invested in that journey, and with this scholarship, I know we can do it together.

Some of the toughest lessons I’ve learned in life have come from times when I felt most alone, and it started with the lack of presence of my dad. I struggled with feelings of abandonment, self-doubt, and anxiety with my dad being absent from my life while growing up, and I really didn’t understand how to deal with them or articulate them either. Mental health was not something that was really spoken about or discussed at all, and I carried around a burden that I really didn’t fully grasp either. They have not only contributed to my personal beliefs regarding mental health, but they have also inspired me to work towards a future in which children can be seen and heard before they are at the point of isolation. As an only child being raised solely by my single mother, I gained the ability to be resilient, but I also struggled with being the center of her universe. I took my struggles and tried not to burden her, and didn’t always know who to turn to, and I think it took me a while to figure out how crucial it is to address mental health, to release my feelings, and to ensure I am offering support to those who may struggle. I tried to seek resources and tools and understand my life experiences so that I can now impart this understanding and compassion on the next generation. These experiences have been very influential in my personal relationships. I have learned to be patient, caring, and attentive, aware of the possibility that other people might be struggling in silence. I would like to be an educator who is aware that all my students will be bringing with them their own struggles, some observable and some invisible. I would like to provide a haven for children to be able to share their feelings, ask questions, and seek assistance without fear of being judged. I would like to be an educator whom kids can look up to, not only for academic success but for emotional strength. Experiences related to mental wellness have further influenced my professional goals. I would like to apply my passion for mental wellness to teaching, balancing learning and mental wellness. I plan to incorporate mental wellness into my teaching practice, helping my learners understand their personal strengths, manage stress, and cultivate positive relationships with themselves and other people. I aim to make mental wellness an ordinary subject in my teaching practice, rather than one that is stigmatized or overlooked, since I have experienced firsthand the impact that can be made. At the end of the day, what I hope to do for this next generation of children is to make them feel understood and supported in their fight to thrive within their circumstances. Teaching students in my class should be more than just helping them develop to their academic potential; it should also include teaching them to take care of their emotional well-being, too. My hope for these students is to be able to provide them with what I have wanted for myself at times in my life: to make sure these children never have to feel alone in their fight because they have someone to support them in their journey to make a difference in a world that sometimes seems overwhelming to them.

I have always known the sacrifices my mom has been making for me by shelving her dreams to ensure I have all the possible opportunities, but I realize only now the extent of what I have actually been given in the form of the sacrifices my mom has been making for me, since I never had the chance my mom had. She always had the dream to be a teacher, but when I came along in college, she decided to raise my siblings alone. I remember the times my mom would go without food or sleep to make sure that I could stay in my dance classes, in cheerleading, or try new things. It is just the amount of work that my mom has been putting in, budgeting, taking me to practices, working, that has left me in awe, making me want to live my mom's dreams, to become a teacher. Being the only sibling in a single-parent family has taught me independence, responsibility, and empathy. I understand at a very young age that “things won’t always be easy and the people you care most about in life may make sacrifices you don’t fully appreciate until much later.” Seeing my mom struggle to make ends meet, to handle her stress levels, and to support me in all my pursuits has been the greatest example in my life of what “resilience, perseverance, and putting others first” are all about. It inspires me to work hard and to strive for a bright future in which I can make a difference in people’s lives. Sports and arts have been an enormous part of my life, including my thirteen years of dance training in cheer and stunting in both high school and college. These have provided me with important traits such as discipline, teamwork, and perseverance, the very qualities I aim to bring to my teaching environment. I hope to develop a place in class for students to feel safe and valued, and to allow students to develop their talents and mature into confident and competent individuals. It is also important for students to understand that they can work and achieve their dreams through their own perseverance and efforts, and with some assistance from others, just like how my mom assisted and encouraged my passions in life. Being a teacher is not merely a professional choice but a way for me to pay tribute to my mom’s dedication and give back to the world as she gave for me. I would like to encourage my students, boost their confidence levels, and build learning environments where kids feel encouraged to acquire knowledge. I would want to be that sort of teacher who would identify the potential in each child and appreciate their triumphs while helping them through difficult times, just as my mom did for me. As the only child of a single mother, life has been a challenge, but it has molded me, fueled my ambition, and taught me the value of perseverance, love, and dedication. The kind of life I wish to offer my pupils is one where they can feel the love, encouragement, and capability, because this is the kind of life my mother taught me, and I wish for them the happiness, love, and breakthroughs that come through life.

I have always believed that the best thing a person can do to assist the world is to invest in its future, one child at a time. Growing up as an only child with a single mom, the values of support, guidance, and encouragement are not foreign to me. Educators can be mentors, or guides, or people they can turn to, people they can trust, people they can lean on for all those kids who find it tough outside or inside their homes. I have already learned from my experiences the kind of influence an educator can make. I know the value of teaching English language learners and autistic students through coursework to ensure all students succeed. I understand the process for differentiating instruction for students of varying skills to reach their potential. This coursework reflects my interest in creating a supportive environment and effective communication among staff and parents to ensure their involvement with my classroom. Childhood experiences through sports activities such as dance and cheering teams provided me with valuable lessons about teamwork, and leading to motivating my students to succeed. However, I have also experienced firsthand the impact of education on people’s lives beyond the classroom. My half-brother has autism, and even though I have never personally met this person as a result of how severe his condition is, learning more about this person’s life has made me want to be a voice for students with exceptional needs. I want to make a classroom where every student is met where they are and provided with what it takes for them to succeed not only as students but as human beings as well, and contribute to society effectively. Through becoming a teacher, I will be able to leave my mark on this world. I would like to be the type of teacher who will motivate their students to follow their dreams, to love themselves and others, and to know the impact that hard work and kindness can make on those around them. Through my hard work and understanding of my students, I will be able to mold the next leaders to be confident, kind, and able to accomplish whatever they set their mind to.

Sometimes life reminds us how fragile it is, and I learned that lesson when I lost my best friend, Laney, in a car accident during high school. Her passing left a hole in my heart, and it made me realize how precious every moment with the people we love truly is. I feel a deep connection to this scholarship because it honors Stephan Laurence Wolley, someone who also left this world too soon, and I am truly sorry for the family and friends who miss him. His story reminds me that even in the face of tragedy, we can carry forward the lessons of dedication, love, and perseverance. I grew up as an only child with a single mom, and it has always been just the two of us navigating life together. She is my guide, my cheerleader, and my best friend, and her unwavering support has shaped who I am. From her, I learned resilience, determination, and the importance of giving everything I have to the things I love. These lessons have carried me through both academic and athletic pursuits, and they inspire me to create a future where I can make a meaningful impact on others. Athletics have been a central part of my life for thirteen years through dance, and throughout high school and college in cheer and stunting. Looking forward, I hope to graduate with a teaching degree and become an educator who inspires and supports children the way my mother and mentors have supported me. Making major financial and personal sacrifices has been necessary for me to pursue my education. In order to pay for my education and obtain real-world experience, I have put a lot of effort into juggling my college coursework with part-time jobs, careful budgeting, and strategic planning. I have decided to put long-term objectives ahead of immediate comfort, whether that means working more hours, declining social opportunities, or continuing to maintain a high level of academic achievement. I've learned self-control, perseverance, and the importance of striving for something greater than myself from these sacrifices. I have also put a lot of effort into learning how to assist students with special needs. I'm taking a course this semester that focuses on teaching students with autism, and I'm learning useful skills to support students' academic and social success. Every class reaffirms my love for teaching and improves my capacity to offer insightful counsel to those who most need it. I'm determined to keep doing this work in my coursework and in my future classroom, where I can use my knowledge, compassion, and creativity to positively impact students' lives. I think a committed teacher's influence goes well beyond the classroom. While I cannot directly experience his life, I carry the awareness of his struggles with me, and it motivates me to advocate for those who are often misunderstood or overlooked. Knowing that there are children like Jack who deserve support, understanding, and inclusion drives my desire to dedicate my life to working with individuals on the autism spectrum. This semester, I am taking a course specifically focused on teaching students with autism, and it has already expanded my understanding of effective strategies, classroom accommodations, and individualized support plans. Learning the research behind evidence-based practices, observing how teachers adapt to meet students’ unique needs, and understanding how small changes can have a tremendous impact has confirmed my goal: I want to become an elementary school teacher who provides an inclusive, supportive, and empowering environment for every student. I want to ensure that children with autism are not just seen, but celebrated for their abilities and given the tools they need to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. In the future, I plan to implement the skills and knowledge I am gaining to create classrooms where students with autism feel safe and capable, and where their differences are valued rather than stigmatized. I hope to advocate for additional resources, collaborate with families, and work closely with specialists to make sure every child has access to the education and support they deserve. Most importantly, I want to be a teacher who believes in the potential of each student, just as I hope the world will one day fully embrace children like Jack. The first time I tried to play an instrument, I was a nervous freshman holding a recorder in my hands, convinced I was about to make everyone in the room regret my choice of class. I had never played an instrument before, and the first few notes I tried to play sounded more like a squeaky door than music. But as awkward as it was, that class became one of the most memorable and transformative experiences of my college career. Through learning the recorder, I discovered how powerful music can be in engaging students, building confidence, and making learning memorable. Playing the recorder taught me lessons far beyond music. I learned patience, perseverance, and the value of embracing mistakes, skills that I know are essential in teaching. Most importantly, it showed me how music can transform learning into something interactive and joyful. Even a simple song can help students remember concepts, build teamwork, and feel excited about their accomplishments. That experience inspired me to incorporate music into my future classroom, not just as an activity, but as a meaningful part of education. My love for music goes beyond the classroom. I deeply appreciate live music and the way it brings people together, whether it’s a small local performance or a large concert. Experiencing music live allows me to feel the energy, emotion, and connection it can create, and it inspires me to bring that same excitement into my teaching. I want my students to feel the joy and magic of music, even if it’s just through singing a song, playing a rhythm, or celebrating small musical successes together. My goal is to become an elementary school teacher who creates a classroom where music is woven into learning. I want students to see learning as creative, fun, and memorable, using songs and instruments to teach concepts in math, reading, and social skills. Beyond the classroom, I hope to give back to youth by creating music clubs, workshops, and performances that allow students to explore their talents and gain confidence. I want them to experience, as I did, that music is more than notes on a page; it is a universal language that inspires, connects, and empowers. In short, my journey from a squeaky recorder player to someone who loves and deeply appreciates live music has shown me the incredible value of music in education. I am passionate about sharing that joy with students and giving back to youth by helping them discover the same love for music, learning, and self-expression that changed my own life.

I am pursuing a career in education because I want to be a teacher who inspires curiosity, confidence, and a love of learning in every student, just as I was inspired by my own teachers. Growing up, school was not always easy for me, and I often felt overwhelmed by subjects that seemed complicated or intimidating. That all changed in eighth grade when I had a math teacher who completely transformed the way I experienced learning. She had a unique ability to make math fun, engaging, and approachable, and her excitement for the subject was contagious. More than just teaching formulas and equations, she created an environment where I felt capable, confident, and motivated to try my best. For the first time, I connected with a teacher in a way that went beyond the classroom; I felt seen, encouraged, and inspired. Her influence on me was profound. That lesson has stayed with me, and it is the reason I want to dedicate my life to teaching. The inspiration of my eighth-grade math teacher continues to guide me today.
