Every single day four of us turn the living room into a classroom. I am a single mom with a 2-year-old girl, a 1-year-old girl, and a 6-month-old baby boy, and my routine is a well-oiled balancing act. Between bottles, naps, and juggling toddlers, I’m also logging into my student portal to finish my coursework. It was not an easy road to take, but it was a necessary road to choose to pursue a degree in applied psychology online at Belhaven University in these trying times. My experience raising three infants and toddlers has propelled me to pursue further education, shaping my strength of character and fueling my ambition to build a legacy for my family. It takes a great deal of self-motivation to raise three very young children by myself while maintaining a 3.9 GPA as an online learner. I have to be my own instructor and accountability partner in the absence of a physical campus. Time is my most valuable resource, and there are no bad days. I've discovered how to turn quiet times into study sessions, going over intricate psychological theories late at night or early in the morning while my infants are asleep. My nearly flawless GPA is evidence of my unwavering commitment. It shows the selection committee—and eventually my kids—that boundaries are supposed to be crossed. I want my daughters and my son to grow up knowing that their mother studied at the kitchen table to build their future, proving that hard work can overcome any barrier. My lived experience as a single mother is also what drew me to Applied Psychology. Every day, I apply the concepts of developmental psychology, emotional resilience, and behavioral management directly in my own home. Navigating the critical early milestones of my children’s lives makes this major more than just a collection of abstract theories; it is a practical tool to understand human behavior and help communities heal. My ambition is to use this degree to impact other families facing adversity. I want to build a career where I can design supportive community programs or educational initiatives that uplift single-parent households and vulnerable youth. Ultimately, this scholarship represents a vital bridge toward establishing generational wealth. The fear of debt is a heavy burden, especially when three babies depend entirely on my financial stability. By reducing the immediate financial strain of tuition, this funding allows me to focus fully on completing my degree without compromising my family's basic needs. It ensures that the sacrifices my children make alongside me will result in a stable, prosperous future. My online education at Belhaven University is the foundation upon which I am building a new life. I possess the ambition to change my community, the drive to maintain academic excellence under pressure, and a deep understanding of the impact a single mother can make. With your support, I can turn this degree into a lifetime of financial security for my children and meaningful service to others.

Growing up, I saw firsthand how domestic violence, substance abuse, and structural obstacles can ruin the lives of talented African American women in my neighborhood. I became aware of how severely underrepresented culturally competent support systems are after witnessing women in my own neighborhood and extended family deal with these intersecting crises without a suitable safety net. This intersectional crisis defined my aspirations in addition to igniting my empathy. My goal in education is to get a degree in psychology and social policy, giving me the systemic and clinical tools to create spaces of committed healing. African American women, with their own cultural stigmas and institutional biases, often cannot ask for or receive effective help. My own lived experience, along with rigorous academic training, will enable me to develop community outreach initiatives that dismantle these stigmas and provide direct mental health advocacy. This method encourages an atmosphere where people can express their stories and ask for help without the worry of being judged. My long-term goal is to create a more inclusive and understanding model for mental healthcare that caters to the specific needs of marginalized groups. This scholarship will alleviate the financial burden of my tuition, allowing me to focus entirely on my studies, research, and local volunteer work. My drive is fueled by the resilience of the women who came before me, and I am committed to turning my observations into actionable, lifelong advocacy. I have the ambition to lead, but I need the financial support to bridge the gap between my vision and my degree. Winning this award will allow me to fearlessly pursue a career dedicated to uplifting vulnerable women.

To me, selflessness is not just an abstract virtue; it is a daily commitment to actively lifting the burdens of others, even when your own hands are full. As a single mother of three children maintaining a 3.915 GPA at Belhaven University, my days are filled with immense personal responsibilities. However, I believe that true altruism is demonstrated when we choose to look past our own struggles to serve our neighbors. My passion for human behavior and community healing has driven me to embody this selflessness through my volunteer work with the Diaper Bank of the Delta. In this role, I dedicate my time to combating childhood poverty and period poverty across our region, ensuring that vulnerable families experiencing severe financial or disaster crises have immediate access to clean diapers, wipes, and basic hygiene essentials.Working at the distribution hub, my hands-on role involves counting, sorting, and packing loose diaper donations into emergency bundles, as well as assembling dignity care packages for mothers and young children. I also assist in preparing mobile distribution trailers to transport these vital supplies directly to rural communities that completely lack transit access. One specific moment that stands out involved a mother who arrived at the hub overwhelmed, financially drained, and visibly distressed about how she would provide basic necessities for her newborn. Having walked in those exact stressful shoes myself, I didn't just hand her a package; I listened to her, validated her struggles, and provided a warm, welcoming space of dignity. Relieving that immediate physical and financial stressor for her was a direct exercise in community healing. This volunteer work is deeply connected to my academic pursuits in Applied Psychology. Through my studies, I look at community service not just as charity, but as a crucial intervention for maternal mental health and household stability. When we reduce the baseline survival anxiety for a parent, we are directly protecting the emotional development of a child. My perseverance in my education is fueled by my desire to scale this impact. I am trying to build a robust framework in psychological principles so that I can transition into a professional career developing long-term, structural mental health resources and supportive community programs for single parent households and at-risk families.Receiving this scholarship would recognize the drive and need of a student who balances multiple demanding worlds to serve others. By easing the financial strain of my tuition and textbooks at Belhaven, this investment will allow me to sustain my academic excellence while continuing to show my children that a life of true impact is defined by what we give back to the world.

Being raised by a single mother of five taught me early on that strength is the will to persevere in the face of adversity rather than the absence of it. I learned the true meaning of tenacity and sacrifice from watching my mother navigate the world by herself. She frequently took on seemingly impossible tasks to ensure our survival and happiness while bearing heavy emotional and financial burdens. Her unwavering work ethic and resilient spirit became the cornerstone of who I am today, even though there were days of extreme struggle. Her life taught me that the main strategies for ending difficult cycles are education and perseverance. She gave me a strong desire to always aim higher, which has helped me navigate every stage of my life. I still use those same lessons from my childhood as a daily guide. As I pursue my undergraduate degree in Applied Psychology at Belhaven University, I find myself in the familiar position of a single mother, raising three lovely children of my own. The difficulties are genuine, and there are many days when juggling motherhood, late-night study sessions, and financial strain makes me cry. I find solace in prayer, asking God for better days, and drawing directly from the resilience my mother instilled in me during those trying times. I want to give my children a secure, promising future, just as my mother battled to do for me, so I'm determined to improve, succeed, and keep moving forward. My upbringing has greatly influenced my academic aspirations and professional objectives. Maintaining a 3.915 GPA and becoming a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society are accomplishments that stem from the discipline I saw in my upbringing. I intend to use my studies in applied psychology to transform my own experiences with emotional fortitude and familial hardship into professional advocacy. My objective is to create mental health interventions and community resources that support single-parent households and vulnerable families. In order to give other mothers and kids the resources they need to succeed, I want to pursue a career in structural support and healing. On this difficult journey, receiving the Sola Family Scholarship would be extremely helpful. This funding will lessen the financial burden on my family by assisting with the cost of tuition and educational supplies, enabling me to devote more time to my children and my academic success. This investment upholds the legacy of a single mother's strength, which is being carried on by a daughter who fights daily to give the next generation the same opportunity for success, education, and hope.

I see attending college as a means of creating a better future for my family and using my love of human behavior to promote community healing. My academic path has been purposeful and characterized by resiliency. Education has always been my compass, from being accepted into the National Honor Society in high school to keeping a 3.915 GPA as a member of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK). College is now the ultimate testing ground for me as an undergraduate at Belhaven University juggling the demanding requirements of higher education with the enormous responsibility of raising my three children. In this collaborative ecosystem, I actively show my kids that academic success is attainable at any stage of life and that no systemic barrier or financial obstacle can limit their potential. They watch me study late into the night, learning firsthand the value of discipline, work ethic, and unconditional perseverance.I am attempting to achieve both academic mastery in applied psychology and significant community advocacy through my higher education. My main goal is to develop a strong foundation in psychological concepts so that I can create innovative, empirically supported solutions for systemic mental health issues. As a non-traditional student, I look for real-world solutions to support families and vulnerable groups in my community rather than merely absorbing theories. I want to take the psychological frameworks I study in the classroom at Belhaven University and translate them into actionable strategies that heal trauma and strengthen family dynamics. After earning my degree, my ambition is to work in a professional field where I can advocate for structural mental health resources, design supportive counseling interventions, and implement community outreach programs. In the end, I hope to graduate not only with a degree but also with a legacy of tenacity that will serve as a permanent model for my kids and spur advancement in my neighborhood.Getting the Hines Scholarship would be essential to achieving these goals and executing my future plans. This funding will relieve the financial burden of tuition and textbooks, freeing me up to channel all my drive into academic success and motherhood instead of worrying about financial deficits. In order to have a long-lasting impact on society, it directly supports an underrepresented student who is juggling multiple worlds to build a brighter future. With your investment, I will stay completely focused on my long-term goal of using my applied psychology degree to foster deep empathy, mend families, and create equitable pathways for future generations.
