Growing up in a low-income household, raised by a single mother, with a lot more going on? It was hard. My mom works hard and is trying her best. she abandoned her dream of pursuing computer science to support her kids. My mom worked in jobs she absolutely hated to provide for my sister and me. Instead choosing to be an accountant to ensure we had food to eat, a roof over our heads.
For us kids, these issues pushed into our everyday lives. She would come home blowing up with screaming, and cussing. Saying it to our faces in multiple different versions of these fits she wished she'd been "trifling." There were moments when I felt terrible for existing. I begged, just wanting someone to listen to me. I always got our Financial situation thrown in my face. It took nearly a suicide attempt to be listened to. It hurt a lot. Emotionally, mentally, and physically.
I eventually joined my schools Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) and BEAM Club. In the GSA, I work to ensure I am seen as a safe haven for my friends to come to with issues and questions. With BEAM, we strive to make a safe space for all students to come with all of their issues.
This scholarship would give me the support to complete my college years without further stressing my mom. As well as continue to ensure that no one has to struggle alone. The most important thing is that sometimes just listening to someone could help them a lot. So I help as many I can. Every single day.
