Hello! I am Sherling, an ambitious intern at UW Health Hope, where I devote my time to solving community health issues. With my internship, I actively identify problems in the community and develop projects to solve them over a four-week period. This hands-on experience helped me refine my problem-solving skills and deepened my commitment to community service.
I am a high school student, and through my hobbies—reading, mathematics, drawing, music, and art—I am more into creativity and analytical thinking, which I wish to channel into research in the career field of psychology. Particularly, the intersection between mental health and community well-being interests me, and I aspire to someday contribute meaningful research in this field.
Other than my internship, I am part of two enriching programs: one to help and support my academic success and the other to celebrate Latinx culture, which also gives me opportunities as an immigrant student. I also volunteer a portion of my time, which reinforces my commitment to community service.
With the experiences I've gained in UW Health Hope and my extracurricular activities, I've built a skill set that's well-rounded, and I am eager to further enhance this in future study and later on, in my career. I am excited about the future opportunities ahead and always look forward to connecting with people and organizations with similar interests in doing good for society.
Thank you for visiting my profile!

American Dream Scholarship
The American Dream represents the idea of freedom - the freedom to pursue one's desire and express oneself freely. For me, as a Latina immigrant, the American Dream represents the sacrifices people make to reach this land of opportunity. It is the pride immigrant parents feel when they see their children graduate from school. It is the resilience we all exhibit as we strive for a better life in this country.
However, what I have found is that the dream of the United States is by no means without its complexities. Parents who are immigrants from other countries have managed to bring us here because they wanted a future due to America; a future that would be far better than where they were coming from. Many of the parents work so hard only to feel weak when arriving home due to the long tiring hours they spend in their workplaces. In exchange for their health conditions along with minds in sound directions, they have turned out to be rich but others will lead good lives for theirs.
The American dream is also the desire for expansion, knowledge, and change. It encompasses the experience we gain throughout our lives, what makes us happy, and the small moments we cherish on the path to achieving our goals. For many immigrant families like mine, the American Dream symbolizes hope. It is an opportunity to achieve what we could not in our homeland. The ability to adapt to a new society and culture, and the hope that one day we will shine, like the stars on the flag.
Learning has been key to my American dream. As a kid, my parents told me the importance of learning, in school and life. Getting here changed how I see the world. Being an immigrant has been tough. I had to learn a new language and way of life. But I see these struggles as chances to grow. This taught me to keep going, no matter what.
The challenges we face as immigrants- leaving everything behind to pursue our dreams- require immense courage. Deciding to leave your country for one where you don't speak the language, know anyone, or have anything, and starting from scratch, is also part of the American Dream. It is the beginning of all dreamers who often lived in the shadows, fearing that their dreams would remain unfulfilled because of the barriers of this country. These barriers sometimes make dreamers like me doubt whether there truly is freedom and opportunity to shine and belong. However, there is no effort without results, no sacrifice that does not have a restart.
During my search for the American Dream, I have found fulfillment through helping others and making a positive change in my community. Through my involvement in volunteer opportunities at my school and belonging to clubs that represent my culture, I have created valuable relationships and a greater appreciation for the diversity of American society. These experiences help shape my personal growth and my determination to contribute positively to this society full of opportunities.
In conclusion, the American Dream for me is resilience, hope, tenacity, and courage. It is embracing the opportunities this country offers, overcoming challenges with resilience and effort. As I continued my journey toward realizing my American dream I was inspired by all the values and characteristics that those who came before have. I will commit to using my voice and my abilities to help others believe that their dreams can come true. Dreams are what drive us to create great things.
