Hello and welcome! My name is Sherika Billett. I am an active-duty U.S. Navy Sailor, proud immigrant from Kingston, Jamaica, and first-generation college student pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education. After dedicating nearly two decades to serving my country, I am preparing for my next mission, serving children and families through education.
My passion for early childhood education comes from a deep belief that investing in young children is one of the most powerful ways to create lasting change. I am committed to creating safe, inclusive, and nurturing environments where children can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
Throughout my journey, I have learned the value of perseverance, resilience, and service. Balancing military responsibilities with higher education has strengthened my determination to create opportunities for others and lead by example. As a first-generation student, I hope my story inspires others to believe that their dreams are achievable.
My long-term goal is to become an Early Childhood Educator and eventually open a childcare center dedicated to supporting military families. I hope to provide high-quality early learning experiences while helping parents navigate the unique challenges of military life.
I believe that service does not end when the uniform comes off it simply takes on a new purpose. Through education, compassion, and leadership, I hope to leave a lasting impact on children, families, and my community for generations to come.

For the past seventeen years, I have had the honor of serving in the United States Navy. During my military career, I have learned the importance of leadership, integrity, perseverance, and selfless service. These values have shaped who I am and have inspired me to continue serving others beyond my military career. To prepare for the next chapter of my life, I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education through National University.
My decision to pursue a degree in Early Childhood Education stems from my passion for helping children learn, grow, and reach their full potential. I believe that the first years of a child’s life are among the most important and that caring, knowledgeable educators can have a lasting impact on a child’s development and future success. Through my coursework and field experiences, I have gained a deeper understanding of child development, family engagement, and developmentally appropriate practices that support young learners. Earning this degree will provide me with the knowledge and skills necessary to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children and families.
While I am not planning to pursue a career in the United States Air Force, I do intend to continue my career in the United States Navy until I become eligible for retirement. Completing twenty years of military service is a goal that I have worked toward with pride and dedication. Serving in the Navy has given me opportunities to lead, mentor others, and contribute to something greater than myself. Those experiences have strengthened my desire to continue serving my community in a different capacity after I retire from active duty.
Following graduation and my eventual retirement from the Navy, I plan to transition into a career in education. I hope to work as an early childhood educator, where I can provide young children with a safe, nurturing, and engaging environment that promotes learning and development. I also intend to continue my education by pursuing a master’s degree, which will allow me to expand my professional opportunities and grow as a leader in the field of education.
In the long term, my dream is to open my own early childhood education center. I envision creating a high-quality, inclusive program that supports children from diverse backgrounds and provides resources for families. I am especially passionate about supporting military families, who often experience unique challenges such as deployments and frequent relocations. I want to create a place where children feel safe, valued, and encouraged to reach their fullest potential.
My military service and educational journey have both taught me that true leadership is rooted in service to others. By combining the values I have learned in the Navy with my passion for education, I hope to continue making a positive impact on future generations and leave a lasting legacy of compassion, learning, and community support.

Losing my son, Rayne, at 35 weeks pregnant was the most heartbreaking and life-changing experience I have ever faced. At that stage in my pregnancy, I had already formed a deep bond with him. I felt his movements, talked to him, and imagined what life would be like once he arrived. I had prepared for his arrival and was filled with excitement about becoming his mother. When I lost him, it felt like everything I had dreamed of was suddenly taken away. The grief was overwhelming, and for a long time, I struggled to understand how to move forward.
In the months following my loss, I was not only grieving Rayne, but also the future I had envisioned with him. The experience changed the way I see the world. I became more aware of how fragile life is and how important every moment can be. Even the smallest things felt different, and I carried a heaviness that I had never known before. Over time, I began to understand that although Rayne is not physically here, he will always be a part of me. His presence continues to shape my life in ways I never expected.
This loss has shaped me into a stronger and more compassionate person. It taught me resilience and showed me that even through deep pain, there is a way to keep going. I have developed a deeper sense of empathy, especially toward children and families. I understand how important it is for children to feel safe, supported, and cared for, and how much families rely on those who help guide and nurture their children. I no longer take time or relationships for granted, and I value the role that care and connection play in everyday life.
My experience losing Rayne has had a direct impact on my decision to pursue a degree in Early Childhood Education. It has given me a strong sense of purpose and a desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of young children. I want to create a safe, nurturing, and positive environment where children can grow, learn, and feel valued. I also want to be a source of support for families, understanding that every child and every family may be facing challenges that are not always visible.
Although losing my son is something I will carry with me forever, it has shaped who I am in meaningful ways. It has given me strength, compassion, and a clear sense of direction. I live my life with a greater appreciation for each day and a deep desire to make a difference. I honor Rayne by continuing my education, pursuing my goals, and using my experiences to provide care, understanding, and support to the children and families I will serve in my future career.

The sound of boots by the front door was always unmistakable. No matter how quiet the house was, I could recognize that steady rhythm immediately. It meant my sister was home, if only briefly and those moments, no matter how small, meant everything. Growing up with a sister serving in the United States Navy taught me early on that love often shows up through sacrifice, strength, and unwavering commitment.
One of my clearest memories is watching her prepare for deployment aboard an aircraft carrier. The routine was calm and practiced, yet heavy with unspoken emotion. Her uniform was always pressed, her gear carefully packed, and she would repeat instructions one last time, as if to reassure herself that everything would be okay while she was away. What stayed with me most wasn’t what she said, but how she carried herself with quiet courage, pride, and purpose. Even knowing she would be gone for months, she remained composed, strong, and determined. That example left a lasting impression on me.
Life with a deployed sibling wasn’t easy. There were long stretches without seeing her, missed holidays, and days when communication was limited. Sometimes weeks passed before we could hear from her. During those times, I learned patience, resilience, and gratitude. Despite the challenges, my sister never complained. She reminded us why her service mattered and encouraged us to stay strong. She showed me that dedication and perseverance can carry you through even the most difficult moments.
Some of the most meaningful lessons came from the small, everyday things: her discipline, her attention to detail, and her unwavering sense of responsibility. She emphasized the importance of education and always encouraged me to pursue my goals with determination. During moments when I felt overwhelmed or uncertain, her belief in me pushed me to keep going and reminded me that hard work and commitment are worth it.
As I’ve grown older, I’ve come to understand the full impact of her service not just on our family, but on the opportunities I have today. Watching her serve inspired me to develop my own work ethic and a desire to give back through a career centered on service and helping others. Her example continues to guide me, motivating me to approach challenges with integrity, compassion, and perseverance.
This scholarship represents more than financial support it honors the dedication of military families and recognizes the sacrifices that often go unseen. Carrying forward the lessons I learned from my sister means striving for excellence and making a positive difference wherever I can. Her service in the Navy did not end when she stepped off the carrier, it lives on through the values she passed down, and I carry those lessons with me every day.
