Bio

I am a forty year-old survivor of domestic violence who wants to make her family proud. I was finally able to realize my dream of attending college for the first time and I have been doing a great job. I have a GPA of 3.733 and was just nominated to join the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS). I am a great advocate for my fellow students and ran for office at the Student Government Association elections in the role of Nights and Weekend Vice President. I want to reach my full potential in a field I love and be a voice for my people. I love the world of finance and would love to do as much as I can as an African American woman.

Hi, to say my life has been interesting would be an understatement. I am a survivor of domestic violence, still surviving with that emotional trauma but currently aiming for higher education.Thankfully, I had no children from that union. I migrated from the beautiful island of Jamaica to seek a better life for myself and family. I thought then, and still do, that America was the land of opportunities. I am a forty year-old first generation college freshman. Yes, you read that correctly, I am forty and a college freshman. When i graduate in 2023, I will be the first college graduate of my family. As previously stated, I am a freshmen attending City University of New York (CUNY) Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, New York. My current major is Business Administration, however, I was bitten by the Finance bug and will be pursuing it for my Bachelors and Masters with a minor in Business and Accounting. I hope to one day be the face of African American Female Financiers as we are completely underrepresented in this field. I have yet to see one African American, let alone woman, featured as a role model for the Finance industry and I aim to change that. In truth, had I not attended college, I would not have been open to this field of study. I believe that African Americans are lacking in exposure to many of these fields. We do not see representation and we know that representation matters. I currently hold a GPA of 3.733 and i am involved in student life on campus, pre-COVID 19. I am one of three student liaisons to the Chair of the School of Business at Medgar who offer unfiltered feed back of student life to faculty leaders. I ran for office in the Spring 2020 Student Government elections for Evening and Weekend Vice President and was voted in third. I was nominated to join the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) which recognizes a small percentage of exemplary students and I plan on enrolling. I was a teacher's assistant for a few professors and immerse myself in college life - rallies, forums and clubs. My interests are far and peculiar. I love all things science fiction (movies, books etc.), however, I do enjoy a good political debate. I have been dancing since the age of five and still do it as a form of release and exercise. I have a eclectic ear for music, often listening to Broadway musicals and movie scores as opposed to pop or R&B. My most sacred times are spent by myself at the movie theaters at odd times of the night, watching random shows. It is during these times that my mind wanders and helps in difficult decisions. I have no children, but I spoil my nephew as though he was my own. I would like to set the bar high for what is expected of him as a Black man in America. I need to break any and all generational curses!
