2024 has been the hardest year of my life. My mother passed away on the very last day of 2023 after a four-year battle with cancer, leaving my sister and me to face a new year without her. With our biological father out of the picture and our "stepfather" no longer having any ties to us, we felt truly alone. Unfortunately, the challenges didn't end there. We were robbed, evicted from our home by our "stepfather", entangled in multiple court cases due to a fight at that house, and ultimately forced to live with my grandmother.
In a time meant for healing, I found myself in situations where I couldn’t even grieve. While my grandmother provided shelter in her living room, it was neither a permanent solution nor sufficient for our needs. We had to manage our own groceries, handle personal expenses, and take care of ourselves, which was a sudden and overwhelming shift from relying on our mother.
I am a senior in computer science at Wentworth Institute of Technology. I was supposed to graduate last year, but I took a gap year to care for my mother, who was bedridden and in constant pain. Now that she is gone and we lack a parental figure, it's time for me to step up and complete my education to better support my sister and myself. Despite her illness, my mother did everything she could to ensure I received a good education. I am committed to making sure her efforts were not in vain and that I earn my degree from Wentworth. However, attending a private institution like Wentworth comes with financial challenges. This scholarship would significantly alleviate the burden I face in the upcoming year.
Currently, I work full-time at Baycove Human Services, assisting individuals with mental health disabilities. I plan to continue working while attending classes, as I need to support both my education and our necessities. We are still in survival mode—my sister is pursuing a job after completing her education in business, while I am focused on graduating as soon as possible. Once I earn my degree, I hope to secure a lucrative position as a software developer, allowing me to better support us. Ultimately, my goal is for us to move beyond mere survival and start truly living.
The financial support from this scholarship would be a crucial step in ensuring I can complete my education. It would help fulfill my mother's wish, letting her know that I am doing okay and that my 20 year old sister, is being taken care of. I am grateful to everyone involved in making this opportunity possible, especially to Khai, who continues to inspire compassion even after his passing.
Thank you for considering my application.
