Hi, my name is Shelton Edwards and I am 20 years old. I am currently a Junior at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. I am very involved in both my community and on campus serving as an AmeriCorps member for the 2023-24 academic year committing myself to serving others. I am also on the executive board for The BIG Event, the largest community service event on campus where I am the head director of sponsorships. I am also a member of both the Black Male Leadership Association, the UL chapter for the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), and the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) My goal after I graduate is to pursue a master's in accounting then start my career as a CPA after passing the CPA Exam. One of my aspirations is to one day lower child crime rates in my city by creating a free, year-round childcare program that will provide children with a safe space where they can be kids and have fun at no expense to the parents. Growing up poor, I know how it feels to be without and I want to try my best to prevent future generations from feeling that same pain.

Growing up, my mother was the cornerstone of our family. Despite the financial hardships we faced, she put her all into ensuring that my siblings and I had everything we needed. Her unwavering dedication and sacrifices have profoundly impacted my life and significantly contributed to my success in college.
Our family’s financial struggles were a constant reality, but my mother never let that define us. She worked multiple jobs, often juggling long hours to make ends meet. Despite her exhaustion, she always made time for us, ensuring we felt loved and supported. I remember nights when she would come home late, visibly tired but still eager to help with homework or attend school events. Her relentless work ethic and determination to provide for us were both inspiring and humbling.
My mother’s commitment to our education was particularly influential. She believed that education was the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and was determined to give us the best possible opportunities. Even when money was tight, she found ways to ensure we had access to educational resources. She often sought out free or low-cost programs, borrowed books from the library, and encouraged us to participate in school activities. Her belief in the power of education instilled in me a deep respect for learning and a drive to excel academically.
In addition to her focus on education, my mother also taught us the importance of resilience and perseverance. She faced numerous challenges with grace and fortitude, never allowing setbacks to deter her. Her ability to maintain a positive outlook despite our circumstances taught me that adversity could be overcome with hard work and determination. This mindset has been invaluable during my college years, helping me navigate the challenges and pressures of higher education.
Financial struggles did not prevent my mother from providing emotional support and guidance. She was always there to listen, offer advice, and encourage us to pursue our dreams. Her belief in my abilities gave me the confidence to strive for excellence and not be limited by our socioeconomic status. Her support was a constant reminder that I was capable of achieving great things, regardless of our financial situation.
When it came time for me to apply to college, my mother was my biggest cheerleader. She helped me research schools, fill out applications, and apply for scholarships. Her encouragement and belief in my potential were crucial in helping me secure a place at a reputable university. Once I was in college, her support did not waver. She continued to be a source of strength and motivation, always reminding me of the importance of perseverance and hard work.
My mother’s sacrifices and dedication have had a lasting impact on my college experience. Her unwavering support has been a driving force behind my academic achievements and personal growth. I am deeply grateful for her love and determination, which have provided me with the foundation to succeed.
As I progress through my college journey, I carry with me the lessons my mother taught me. Her resilience, work ethic, and belief in the power of education continue to inspire me. I am committed to honoring her sacrifices by striving for excellence in my studies and using my education to create a better future for myself and our family. My mother’s unwavering dedication and support have not only shaped who I am but have also empowered me to overcome obstacles and pursue my dreams with confidence and determination.

Growing up in a community where everyone was treated as family profoundly shaped my values and instilled in me a sense of responsibility towards others. This close-knit environment, where neighbors were extensions of our family, fostered a deep sense of belonging and interconnectedness. From an early age, I understood that our actions had collective impacts, and this understanding guided my commitment to community service.
My parents, deeply involved in community activities, always emphasized the importance of giving back and supporting one another. They often said, “We rise by lifting others,” a mantra that resonated with me. As I transitioned to college, this ingrained sense of community propelled me to seek out opportunities for service.
In college, I joined student organizations focused on community outreach and social justice. One of my most rewarding experiences was mentoring high school and college students through a program for underprivileged youth. Helping them navigate challenges and encouraging their pursuit of higher education was incredibly fulfilling and reaffirmed my belief in the power of community support. I also participated in various service projects, such as organizing food drives and volunteering at local shelters. These experiences taught me valuable lessons about leadership, empathy, and advocacy.
As I approach the end of my college journey, I am more determined than ever to sustain my community involvement. Being a young black man comes with its own set of challenges, but it also provides a unique perspective and an opportunity to inspire and lead by example. I plan to join local organizations focused on education, social justice, and economic empowerment. By leveraging my skills and experiences, I hope to contribute to initiatives that address systemic inequalities and promote opportunities for all. I also aim to continue mentoring young people from marginalized communities, believing that guidance and support can help them realize their potential and achieve their goals.
Moreover, I plan to use my voice and platform to advocate for change. Through writing, speaking engagements, or social media, I want to raise awareness about critical issues and mobilize others to take action. Collaborating with like-minded individuals and organizations will amplify our efforts and create a broader impact.
My goal is to build on the foundation laid by my upbringing and continue fostering a sense of community wherever I go. Growing up in a community that treated everyone as family taught me the importance of unity, compassion, and service. These principles will continue to guide me as I strive to create a better, more inclusive world. By staying true to these values and remaining committed to uplifting others, I am confident that I can make a meaningful difference.

My journey towards becoming a mentor and advocate for others has been deeply rooted in my personal experiences, challenges, and aspirations as a young black male navigating the complexities of the collegiate landscape. From an early age, I recognized the disparities and obstacles that often hindered the success and well-being of individuals like myself. Yet, instead of succumbing to these barriers, I chose to channel my experiences into a purpose-driven commitment to uplift and empower those around me.
Throughout my college journey, I have actively engaged in various opportunities to develop my skills and deepen my understanding of mentorship and service. I sought out leadership roles within student organizations like the student government association, the AmeriCorps organization, the black male leadership association, and many more, where I honed my communication, empathy, and problem-solving abilities. Whether it was organizing community service projects, leading peer support groups, or facilitating workshops on personal development, I embraced every opportunity to make a positive impact.
My passion for mentorship stems from a genuine desire to see others thrive and succeed. As a young black male, I am acutely aware of the importance of representation and support in shaping one's academic and professional trajectory. I have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of mentorship in breaking down barriers, fostering resilience, and cultivating a sense of belonging. Through my journey, I have learned to leverage my experiences, insights, and networks to provide guidance, encouragement, and advocacy to those who may face similar challenges. Throughout my college journey, I have been able to be a mentor to kids from ages K-12 as well as a mentor to those who are at my university.
For me, mentorship is not just about providing advice or assistance; it's about building meaningful relationships based on trust, respect, and mutual empowerment. It's about creating safe spaces where individuals can authentically express themselves, explore their passions, and pursue their dreams without fear of judgment or limitation. Whether I'm offering academic guidance, career counseling, or simply lending an empathetic ear, I strive to meet people where they are and support them in realizing their full potential.
As I continue on my journey of mentorship and service, I am committed to challenging systemic inequalities, advocating for social justice, and fostering inclusive communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. I believe that by uplifting and empowering others, we not only create a ripple effect of positive change but also contribute to a more equitable and compassionate society for generations to come.

For as long as I can remember, I have been raised along with my whole family as an apostolic. Being from a smaller church everyone was very close and we often did a lot of things together. Also, because our church was relatively smaller than most, we constantly had to extend it to fit newer members. During these times, a lot of us, children included would band together to do construction on the church. Some adults would barbeque and make large feasts while the others who were plumbers, electricians, painters and carpenters worked on the buildings. As a kid, we were able to contribute as well by transporting materials like pipes, paint, and wood to designated areas. Also, through this, I was able to learn many skills at a very young age like how to use a saw and hammer, and even how to take measurements. The skills that I developed from my church community allowed me to be more valuable in serving my community. Currently, I am a member of the AmeriCorps organization, a national organization that has served over 1 billion hours to the community in the last ten years. Through AmeriCorps I have been able to work alongside future homeowners, helping them build their future homes. I have also made a change in my own college campus' environment, improving and preserving the plant life in the area. Because of the environment, I was surrounded by, I was instilled with a sense of service that made me want to serve others in the best way I can. My involvement at my church also allowed me to appreciate the fact that I am able to help others, even if it is only in a small way. What I learned then contributed to my involvement in the community because I learned not only to give up my time for others, but I learned to feel empathy. From building up on our church to knocking doors spreading the word on Saturday mornings, the goal at my church is always to serve other before we serve ourselves and that idea was made clear to me at a very young age. I was surrounded by a community of people who were committed to serving others along with making honorable change and those values trickled down to me and have molded me into the man I am today. Thank you for considering my application and I hope to be hearing you very soon!

Throughout the entirety of my life, my parents have worked very hard to get me into a good school. Luckily, I was able to go to private school on scholarships for both middle school and high school. Even then my parents worked two jobs to allow me to participate in extracurriculars. Growing up poor and also losing my house to a flood in 2016 put my parents in a situation where they had to work extra hard and then on top of that they had to deal with a new mortgage added onto their shoulders. I want to lower the load on my parents by helping put some money toward my schooling. Although I am fortunate to have my tuition covered by aid and scholarships, I still have to pay almost 800 dollars on materials every semester (Books, Software, Website subscriptions). With the scholarship money, I can put money toward it myself and relieve my parents of some of the expenses without having to pull out a student loan. Also, I will be able to work fewer hours, allowing me to focus on school. Being an accounting major, and more importantly a college student, everything just gets hard right away. You start having to support yourself for everyday life and do a lot of things on your own at a larger disadvantage than most others after high school. Due to classes and other things, I am only able to commit to 18-20 hours per week. The payment I receive is only enough to pay for gas and food with little left over. With this scholarship, I will be able to better support myself financially. The scholarship would help me greatly because I would be able to afford the books and supplies I need to succeed in the classroom. For example this semester I have had to by 7 books so far and I still have some left to buy in my literature class. The books I have purchased so far have added up to 800.77. With the scholarship, I can use the money to take care of the necessities that I need to succeed at my university. Another big issue that I have is that I because of my financial situation the rest of my money goes into membership fees for clubs and organizations that I participate in which I am not able to pay for all by myself. The remainder of the scholarship would go into paying for membership fees and help me continue to network with people who make college overall a better experience. Thank you for reviewing my application and I hope to be hearing from you very soon!

Ever since I was a young boy, my parents always elucidated that education would be my key to success. The words that my parents shared could not have been more true. My parents saw education as such an important asset that my father taught me how to read himself very early in my life. My father teaching me to read at 3 years old set me apart from all of the other kids. It allowed me to become more curious in my younger ages because instead of having to worry about what the word was, I began to wonder what the words meant. This is what got me into the field of accounting. I always way have loved number and when I found out about what accounting actually was, I knew my major immediately. Accounting as a profession stuck out to me because of how vital it is and because of its versatility and potentential for evolution. My education has benefited me in many ways, especially the knowledge I have gained in accounting. I have been able to learn how businesses are operated and how much more there is to accounting besides tax. Through my adventure of accounting, I have been able to learn how to analyze data that can be helpful in other aspects of business such financial planning and sales predictions. Another way my accounting education has brought value to my life is through the way I am able to read financial statements. Although I am fairly early in my accounting curriculum, I have reached the point where I know all of the basics. I have friends that are my age and have started their own businesses and I am often able to offer them advice on how they can increase income and lower expenses. Also, I currently am employed at a mcdonald's and I often look at our store's multi-step income statements. By looking at them, I am often able to make suggestions to my managers on ways we can lower waste which in turn raises overall net income. Through my education in accounting, I have gained knowledge that has bettered my life in more ways than I could ever express. I have been able to make so many connection and memories through my journey as an accounting major and would not change them for anything in the world. I continue to stay open and appreciative to my education because without it, I would have not made it this far. Thank you for considering my essay and I hope to be hearing from you very soon!

WinnerAs a Black male accounting major, I recognize the importance of creating a positive environmental impact on both my local and global communities in the next five years. Through the lens of finance, I will leverage my skills and knowledge to drive sustainable practices and contribute to a greener future. In the field of finance, I understand that capital allocation plays a crucial role in shaping environmental outcomes. By advocating for sustainable investments and incorporating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors into financial decision-making, I can help redirect funds toward companies and projects that prioritize eco-friendly practices. Through my expertise in accounting and financial analysis, I will work towards promoting green initiatives and supporting businesses that demonstrate a commitment to reducing their carbon footprint. One avenue through which I can create a positive environmental impact is by encouraging the adoption of renewable energy sources. By analyzing the financial viability and long-term sustainability of renewable energy projects, I can help attract investments and promote the transition towards cleaner energy alternatives. This could involve conducting cost-benefit analyses, evaluating tax incentives and subsidies, and advising clients on the financial benefits of renewable energy adoption. By facilitating the financing of solar, wind, or other renewable energy projects, I can contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and promote a healthier environment. Another way I can make a difference is by incorporating sustainability metrics into financial reporting. By ensuring that environmental impacts are properly measured and disclosed in financial statements, I can enhance transparency and accountability. This information can help investors and stakeholders make informed decisions and encourage companies to improve their environmental performance. I will advocate for the adoption of sustainability reporting frameworks, such as the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) or the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB), to ensure that businesses disclose relevant environmental information accurately and consistently. In addition to my professional endeavors, I also recognize the importance of engaging with my local community to foster environmental awareness and action. I will actively participate in community events, workshops, and seminars to educate others about the financial implications of sustainable practices. By sharing my knowledge and experiences, I hope to inspire individuals to make environmentally conscious decisions in their personal and professional lives. Furthermore, as a Black male, I understand the significance of diversity and inclusion in environmental initiatives. I will actively support and collaborate with organizations that promote environmental justice and aim to address the disproportionate impact of environmental issues on marginalized communities. By amplifying underrepresented voices and advocating for equitable access to sustainable resources, I can contribute to a more inclusive and just environmental movement. In conclusion, through my role as a Black male accounting major, I will strive to create a positive environmental impact on both my local and global communities in the next five years. By leveraging my finance skills, I will promote sustainable investments, encourage renewable energy adoption, incorporate sustainability metrics into financial reporting, and actively engage with my community. Through these efforts, I aim to contribute to a greener future and inspire others to take action towards environmental sustainability.
