In my time assisting minority women, I've come to grasp the connection between fibroids and systemic healthcare disparities. I've cared for women— those of Black and Latina descent—who not only bear the physical burden of fibroids but also face emotional and mental challenges resulting from financial struggles, reproductive issues, and biases within the healthcare system that can impede or delay their care. I have noticed that several women of all backgrounds whom I have cared for have experienced being disregarded by healthcare professionals or advised to simply endure their pain, resulting in them enduring their suffering without voicing it out loud. One particular instance that really struck me was when I encountered a woman who had been struggling with heavy menstrual bleeding and constant fatigue for an extended period of time but had been disregarded by her past healthcare providers. Her condition was critical enough to necessitate immediate care. In addition to the challenges she faced and the toll it took on her body, she also endured anxiety and depression worsened by the lack of support and empathy from her medical team. This encounter strengthened my commitment to not just focus on the implications of fibroids but also one's mental health. Here I am all too eager to help destigmatize mental illness by overcoming social injustices by applying my unwavering determination to overcome them. In my utopian vision for optimal mental health in the Black community, the environment embraces mental health as an essential component of overall well-being. Stigma and misconceptions surrounding mental health are dismantled, fostering open dialogue and encouraging individuals to seek help without fear of judgment. This shift in mindset cultivates a culture of compassion, understanding, and support facilitating healing and growth. Within my utopia, mental health care is grounded in cultural competence and sensitivity. Mental health professionals such as myself will undergo extensive training to understand the unique experiences, historical trauma, and systemic challenges faced by the Black community. Therapeutic interventions incorporate culturally appropriate approaches, acknowledging the interconnectedness of mental, physical, and spiritual well-being within the community's context. This alone promotes advocacy to achieve social justice for communities of color. In my idealistic society, the medical health community ensures that mental health resources are accessible to all members of the Black community, irrespective of socioeconomic status. Community-based mental health clinics, telehealth services, and mobile units bring mental health care directly to underserved areas. Financial barriers are dismantled through affordable or subsidized services, expanded insurance coverage, and increased funding for mental health initiatives targeting communities of color. I strive to one day open a non-profit mental health center that offers nondiscriminatory care for all those in need of psychiatry. It would foster the creation of holistic support systems that address the interconnected needs of the Black community. Collaborative partnerships between mental health providers, schools, faith-based organizations, and social services would be utilized to create a comprehensive network of care. Mental health promotion is integrated into educational curricula, workplaces prioritize employee well-being, and community centers offer safe spaces for healing, support groups, and therapeutic activities. These are the concepts that I envision that can promote empowerment and resilience within the community. Mental health care empowers individuals in the Black community to recognize and harness their strengths. Cultivating resilience becomes a fundamental aspect of mental health promotion. Empowering narratives are embraced, highlighting the community's rich history, cultural heritage, and collective achievements. My utopia would largely stress the importance of psychoeducation as well. Mental health education fosters self-advocacy, equipping individuals with the tools to navigate societal challenges and overcome adversity. By breaking the stigma surrounding mental health, providing culturally competent care, ensuring equitable access to resources, fostering community-led advocacy, establishing holistic support systems, and nurturing empowerment and resilience, we can bridge the gaps that have hindered progress. This vision calls for collective action, where mental health care and advocacy become catalysts for social change and equality. Only by embracing this vision can we build a society where the mental well-being of the Black community thrives, paving the way for a future that honors the inherent worth and dignity of every individual, regardless of their race or ethnicity. Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among women. Through education, women can understand the risk factors, signs, and symptoms associated with breast cancer. A prudent provider of women's health recognizes the importance of incorporating breast health education into every interaction with women. Important to note, breast health education promotes general breast health awareness beyond cancer detection. Women learn about maintaining breast health through lifestyle choices such as regular exercise, a balanced diet, limiting alcohol consumption, and avoiding smoking. Understanding breast health as a broader concept helps women prevent various breast-related issues and maintain overall well-being. With my experience as a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner, I strive to inspire and empower women by providing them with the necessary information and resources needed for them to make educated decisions about their breast health. Breast health education enables women to understand their individual risk factors for breast cancer. By assessing family history, lifestyle choices, hormonal factors, and other pertinent information, I continue to be in an optimal position to guide women toward understanding their specific risk profile. My terminal degree path is to earn my doctorate in nursing practice in the field of psychiatric mental health nursing. I know many within my community desperately need access to adequate mental health services. Positive experiences with the mental health industry involve access to treatments like therapy, medication, and support groups in helping people manage their mental health conditions. Many people have benefited from these treatments and have improved their quality of life. I am also a huge advocate of incorporating holistic methods such as mindfulness and yoga. I too can personally attest to the effectiveness of these interventions on loved ones suffering from mental illness. However, there are also negative experiences with the mental health industry, including the stigma associated with mental illness and the lack of access to affordable and quality mental health care. This stigma can prevent individuals from seeking the help they need, and the lack of access to care can exacerbate their condition. As a future mental health provider, I stand to break this cycle of negativity around the mental health industry. Family can have a significant impact on a nursing student's goals, journey, and identity. This can be particularly influential when family members need extra care and support. Nursing school can be a challenging and demanding program that requires a lot of time and dedication, which can affect a student's family relationships. Regardless of these time restraints, I find it most important to take into consideration family needs. In terms of goals, family can be a motivating factor for nursing students. Many students enter the nursing profession with the goal of providing better care for their loved ones or becoming a positive role model. Family support and encouragement can also help nursing students stay motivated and focused on their studies. In order for family to be able to provide support, they too need to be cared for during challenging times. Family can also impact a nursing student's journey through nursing school. For example, family responsibilities, such as caring for children or elderly relatives, can make it challenging to balance schoolwork and personal obligations. I have been fortunate enough to find a productive work-home balance when it comes to family. For my aging parents, I have participated in nursing them back to health after surgeries and health complications. In addition, I continue to aid them with correctly taking their medications and keeping important follow-up appointments with specialists. I also made it my goal to provide them with emotional support and encouragement during their challenging times during the natural aging process. I do this with pleasure as I have great love and admiration for my parents. Finally, the family can also impact a nursing student's identity. The nursing profession is often viewed as a caring profession, and many nursing students feel a strong sense of responsibility to care for their patients. Family values and beliefs can also influence a nursing student's approach to patient care and their interactions with colleagues. Without the presence of my elderly parents in my life, I would not be the person I am today. As a result, I have no problem caring for them during challenging times of agings Overall, the family can play a significant role in a nursing student's journey through school and in shaping their goals and identity as a future nurse. Family members must seek each other's support and understanding throughout all stages of life. Because of the support I received from my family, I was able to persevere and return the favor by supporting them in happiness and health.

COVID-19 and mental health have had a profound impact on my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. The effects of the pandemic have shone a spotlight on the importance of mental health, and this has guided me to prioritize my mental well-being in all aspects of my life. I now recognize how important it is to take time for self-care and cultivate healthy relationships with friends and family. I have also become more attuned to the needs of those around me, and I am more aware of when I need to reach out for help. In terms of my career aspirations, I have become more aware of the need for organizations to prioritize mental health in the workplace. I now have a greater appreciation for the need to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters resilience and well-being. I am also more motivated to pursue a career in mental health, where I can make a positive impact on the lives of others. There is a high need for providers in psychiatric mental health services and I hope to fill that gap. Returning to school after a long break can be challenging. One of the biggest challenges I faced was having to readjust to the academic workload and the organization that comes with it. As a mother of three children (one toddler and two that I home-school myself), I am quite familiar with the importance of being able to multitask. I am thankful that I grasped this concept early on by being a parent. Additionally, working full-time has allowed me to create an effective work-life balance to ensure I am taking care of my mental health even during trying times. Because of my many roles and responsibilities, I continue to work on becoming more organized and efficient with my time management. I also had to overcome distractions and procrastination by setting specific goals and breaking them down into smaller, achievable tasks. I was even able to find an app on my smartphone that allows me to list out my daily tasks and goals for the day. The utilization of this app has been a huge aid in my academic success thus far in graduate school. Finally, I had to make sure I was taking care of my physical and mental health as I was juggling school and work. With the help of friends, family, colleagues and fellow students alike, I feel more than equipped to continue to strive through graduate school. One way I have been able to help with the myriad of issues that arise in school is by obtaining a mentor. I was able to find a mentor who has gone through the same situations both in life and in school. My mentor is thus empathetic to my situation and has provided many helpful tips for me along the way. It is my goal to serve as a mentor in a similar way once I have reached my goal and even along my journey as well. To conclude, I am thankful for any challenges I face as I attend graduate school as it has made me a more resilient person who is more apt to readily troubleshoot any problems. Healthcare is an ever evolving arena which brings both rewards and challenges for the clinician. With over 15 years of experience in healthcare, I have participated in a continually changing environment of which I feel I can contribute to in a positive way. One major change I have witness is the need for more accessible mental health services. In both outpatient clinic and hospital settings, the APRN has become a necessary extension of the physician and medical team as a whole to aid in this expansion. With the presence of APRNs, a different approach to caring is achieved which enhances the overall care received by patients in our communities. As an APRN I have had the benefit of providing independent care as well as under MD supervisory status. It is my goal as in APRN to continue to provide high quality, comprehensive and affordable care to all in the population. With my specialty training in OBGYN and psychiatry, my goal is to become a steady participant in the lives of women and children as they strive to obtain their best physical and mental health with the aid APRN delivered care. To maintain my own mental wellness, I participate in daily meditation, stretching, yoga and overall positive self talk. Even during the completion of this essay I feel positive and optimistic about the opportunities ahead of me regarding receiving the much needed funding to continue my journey in mental health.
