Bio

My Life Goals, Passion, and Why I’m a Great Candidate My name is Sheila Fowlkes, a passionate baker and food industry professional with over 20 years of experience. At 59, I returned to school to refine my craft and build a lasting legacy. My goal is to grow We r The Cake Fowlkes into a thriving business and eventually open a bakery where people can gather, celebrate, and create meaningful memories. Baking is more than a skill for me it’s a way to bring people together. I want my desserts to leave a lasting impression, not just in taste but in the joy they bring. Beyond business, I’m committed to giving back by mentoring young bakers, starting a cooking camp for kids, and working with organizations like Chefs for Kids to serve my community. I am a strong candidate for this scholarship because of my dedication, resilience, and passion for both baking and service. This opportunity would allow me to focus on honing my skills, growing my business, and using my craft to inspire and uplift others.

Pursuing My Passion in Culinary Arts Food has the power to bring people together, create lasting memories, and evoke deep emotions. For over 20 years, I have worked in the food industry, managing food service operations, running a home bakery, and balancing multiple careers. However, baking has always been my true passion. In my late 50s, I made the bold decision to return to school and formally pursue a career in pastry arts. Enrolling in a culinary program is the next step in refining my craft, expanding my business, and building a legacy that my children and community can be proud of. I launched We r The Cake Fowlkes, my cottage bakery, to share my love of baking with others. While I have years of experience, I know that formal education will provide the advanced techniques, business strategies, and confidence I need to take my brand to the next level. My goal is to create desserts that people remember not just for their taste but for the emotions they inspire. Through my studies, I aim to perfect my craft, develop new recipes, and gain the knowledge necessary to grow my bakery into a thriving business. Beyond improving my skills, I want to use my passion for baking to give back. I plan to start a cooking camp for children, teaching them the basics of baking and inspiring the next generation of chefs. I also hope to work with organizations like Chefs for Kids to provide meals and culinary education to underserved communities. My goal is to show others especially those starting over later in life that it is never too late to pursue their dreams and always reach for the sky! In addition to community work, I hope to one day open a brick-and-mortar bakery where I can serve my community with high-quality, handcrafted pastries. More than just a business, I want my bakery to be a welcoming space where people can gather, celebrate, and create meaningful memories. I envision it as a place where my passion for baking meets the joy of bringing people together. Earning this scholarship would help me achieve these goals by easing the financial burden of tuition and allowing me to focus on my education and business growth. With the right training, I can turn my passion into a lasting legacy one that blends delicious desserts, community impact, and the joy of sharing my craft with the world.
