Bio

I am Sheikh, a second-year student at UCLA majoring in Human Biology and Society with a minor in Global Health. I am deeply passionate about healthcare because of my family’s experience navigating the complex, unfair, and often inaccessible system in the United States. I want to enter this field with the goal of making healthcare more accessible for communities like the one I come from. Outside of class, I enjoy playing tennis, playing chess, and reading a good book.

Our family tightly squeezed into the crowded community clinic. After a long wait, the nurse hurried over, but the language barrier made her words difficult to understand, leaving us with only fragments of information. When they handed the bill to our mother, I saw the panic in her eyes. We left feeling worse than when we arrived, a testament to the inadequacies of the American healthcare system. These events were constant challenges in my family’s life; persistently overpowered us during our most difficult times. As I write this essay, our family is amidst yet another medical conundrum as we strive to provide the best care for our mother while grappling with the financial burdens. I feel panic in my eyes, as my mother did so long ago. Situations like these crystallized my understanding of the financial barriers to healthcare and fueled my commitment to promoting healthcare equity. These experiences have instilled in me a strong desire to attend college, where I can contribute to the change I deeply seek. Over my first year at UCLA, I have done everything in my power to pursue this goal. I helped build a club that organizes health fairs in underserved communities across Los Angeles. In addition, our club has visited under-resourced elementary and middle schools to provide free health education, working to address the social determinants of health that negatively impact these communities. I am committed to doing even more, and receiving this scholarship would greatly support and expand my efforts.
