Bio

Hello! My name is Sheelsie Cazares; you may call me Shell if you like. I'm from Houston, Texas. I'm a 15-year-old sophomore at Harmony School of Innovation in Sugarland. I'm a first-generation student from low-income immigrant parents. They migrated to the United States so my sister and I may have a brighter future. My parents want me to finish school and have a brighter future than they had since they experienced a lot of hardships in their home country and don't want their children to go through the same things. I want to fulfill my parents' goal of seeing me succeed, but to do so, I need financial aid from scholarships and grants to help me pay for my college tuition because it's so expensive. My life hasn't been all that difficult—I had a generally happy childhood—but it hasn't been all that easy either. As a person who exhibits neurodiversity, I have been diagnosed with autism and misophonia. Being autistic isn't that bad, but there are some difficulties for me. I struggle with social skills, and frequently have sensory overload. Misophonia is a complicated neurophysiological and behavioral disorder brought on by excessive sound overload that causes extreme emotional outbursts in response to certain trigger noises. I occasionally become overwhelmed by the tension and have a lot of negative thoughts. Drawing allows me to express myself, therefore I do it a lot when I'm upset. Even though I'm not the best artist, I enjoy drawing. Despite these difficulties, I'll keep on going with life! Thank you for taking the time to check out my Bold profile!

As a proud Mexican-American, my life has been a testament to resilience, determination, and the power of heritage. I was born into a humble Mexican family in the U.S.A., and faced extraordinary challenges from the very start. These challenges included a diagnosis of autism, misophonia, apraxia of speech, spinal and hip problems, as well as neuronal and cognitive issues. Despite the initial bleak medical prognosis that I would never speak or lead a normal life, I defied the odds through unwavering perseverance and the unyielding support of my family, whose love and care were my pillars of strength. My journey of recovery involved countless hours traveling to and from hospitals, waiting for the bus at public transportation stations, and enduring numerous therapies and medical treatments. At the end of each day's struggle, my mother and grandma's love rewarded me with the most delicious "conchas" (Mexican sweet bread) and "la abuelita" hot chocolate, which brought comfort after enduring these challenges. I learned that achievements were made even better with the company of my family, tacos, and tamales, celebrating each completed therapy or treatment! My parents will never forget the moment I spoke my first words at seven. From then on, I steadily integrated into mainstream society as much as my autism allowed me. As I approach high school graduation, I am proud to share that I am fluent in English, Spanish, and have a working knowledge of Portuguese, Russian, and Turkish. My academic achievements, including being honored with the position of president of the Honorary Hispanic society (Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica) at my school, have earned my teacher's and peers' respect and admiration and reflect my determination and success. In this role, I have the incredible opportunity to extend a helping hand to those in need through our Honorary Society. Looking ahead, I am eager to pursue a degree in computer science, recognizing the transformative potential of technology in bridging educational gaps. My goal is to develop bilingual and inclusive programs that cater to diverse learning styles and financial circumstances. These programs will not only provide a more equitable learning environment but also foster a sense of inclusivity, particularly benefiting students from Spanish-speaking backgrounds, much like my own. My journey has been shaped by my parent's unconditional love and sacrifice, who poured every ounce of their limited resources into my well-being without expecting anything in return. Their legacy of hard work and perseverance fuels my ambition and serves as a beacon of inspiration. I am committed to honoring their sacrifices by striving for excellence and advocating for inclusivity in education. In embarking on my college journey, I am determined to leverage my experiences and skills to create positive change, not just for myself, but for the broader community. It is my firm belief that through education and technology, we can build a more equitable and empowering society for all. My commitment to this cause is unwavering, and I am eager to see the impact I can make.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
Even though I know it's not reasonable to wish for, there are moments when I wish I could be deaf since other people don't always get how I feel. To stop hearing such sounds, there are moments when I want to slam my skull on concrete and pass out. Misophonia is an uncommon disorder that I suffer from. Misophonia is a complicated neurophysiological and behavioral disorder brought on by excessive sound overload that causes extreme emotional outbursts in response to certain trigger noises. Some individuals refer to it as "the hatred of certain noises." I also have seasonal depression, everyone knows what depression is since it is very common nowadays. Almost everyone is aware of what depression is since it is so prevalent in today's society. I also suffer from seasonal depression. Since depression only makes me feel lonely, depressed, and horrible about myself—emotions I'm already accustomed to—it doesn't bother me all that much. But what has been bothering me lately is my misophonia. I feel hostile, worried, agitated, suicidal, or homicidal when my misophonia activates. My relationships with the people I love and my ideas have been influenced by my issues with my mental health. My family has been affected because I occasionally become irritated at the noises they create. When your own mother's voice and sister irritate you and you simply want them to be quiet, you know the situation is terrible. But I will admit that these mental illnesses have influenced how I perceive the world. I came to realize that I am not the center of the universe. People won't stop doing certain things because of me, therefore I must change to fit the world, not the other way around. I have to learn to swallow my pride and go on, not allowing my feelings to control me and prevent me from living a regular life. The only things I want in life are to be happy, be loved, and learn to accept my flaws and mental illnesses.
    Learner Math Lover Scholarship
The universe is guided by a unique language called mathematics. In the course of our daily lives, it is everywhere. While reading is a part of daily life as well, mathematics isn't always that difficult. I enjoy math because there is only one solution. Math is a clear, closed-ended question. There are numerous ways to get to the correct answer, but most of the time there is only one right answer. Some people find math to be incomprehensible, but for me, math serves as a kind of life guide. Math may occasionally be philosophical as well. In certain cases, the absence of a solution to an equation serves as the answer. I enjoyed math when I was younger. I wasn't sure why I loved it at the time; perhaps it was because it was easy. I appreciate learning new things and being challenged by math. I finally understand why I enjoy math now that I'm in high school. I love math, and it makes me happy. When I'm confronted with a topic that I don't fully grasp and then do, I experience a range of emotions that are difficult for me to put into words. The fact that I eventually figured it out and comprehended it makes me feel good about myself. I recognize how simple it was, but I overcomplicated it myself. Now that I know why I enjoy it so much, I can tackle it with confidence and have fun with the topic.
