He was caught before he could escape and was sent back, forced to endure the consequences of a future he had tried desperately to avoid. My aunts and uncles later escaped to Hong Kong, where they lived in refugee camps for five long years while waiting for the chance to resettle in America. Only one of my aunts was ultimately allowed to leave, while the rest were sent back to Vietnam, carrying with them the heartbreak of dreams delayed and opportunities denied. These stories of waiting, uncertainty, and separation are deeply woven into my family’s identity and into my own understanding of perseverance. On my father’s side, my family’s history is also closely tied to Vietnam’s political landscape. My grandfather’s brother served as Prime Minister of Vietnam, placing my family in a position where political shifts carried serious consequences. This connection reinforced how quickly safety and stability can be lost, and how fragile freedom truly is. Because of this history, I grew up with the understanding that freedom is not guaranteed, but something that must be protected and valued. From UX algorithms that personalize content, to sustainable materials that change the future of fashion, I became fascinated with the hidden STEM side of creativity. That intersection is where I want to build my career. What shaped my interest in STEM wasn’t a single moment—it was a gradual awakening as I stepped into leadership roles that demanded problem-solving, data thinking, and systems design. As President of UCF’s Fashion Society, I manage over 400 student members across 9 creative committees. What sounds like a "fashion club" on paper is actually a complex operation: it involves developing infrastructure, managing timelines, delegating tasks, implementing tools like Notion and Google Workspace, and analyzing engagement patterns to improve participation. This hands-on experience made me realize that I love solving structural problems. I love asking, “How can we do this better, smarter, cleaner?” That question has guided my growing interest in fields like user experience design, data-driven marketing, and interior architecture. I see STEM as a toolset—not just for building apps or running experiments, but for creating sustainable systems and experiences that improve lives. I want to use design thinking, data science, and spatial intelligence to reimagine how we live, shop, and connect—with an emphasis on wellness, beauty, and community. They were once in the states, but made the executive decision to go back to their home, where they were welcomed and treated equally. Last summer, I had the privilege to visit my motherland. Having the opportunity showed me how much it changed, and how much I felt like I missed, I wanted to be able to be a part of it. Having a job that does not require in-person office hours allows the flexibility of being able to visit Vietnam, to see my grandma, and my cousins, to enjoy its city life and its beautiful natural wonders. Throughout high school, I took it upon myself to run for President of an organization called, Students For A Better Society. The name itself does explain what our mission was, but it became much more than that. It was our goal to inspire students to help their local community, to do so, I hosted donation drives, including school supply drives, thanksgiving food drives, women's shelter drives, homeless shelter drives, and a beach clean up. Not only did we give back to our community physically, but we also educated the students and even the staff about the importance of helping our community. It is easy to forget how to connect or how easy it is to help but what a big difference it makes. For my future, I see myself being a creative director, having a vision and direction for how and where a company/brand goes, setting a clear pathway for their overall aesthetic and creative direction. This would involve understanding the brand's values, and target audience, and being able to translate that into compelling visual narratives.
