Using My Voice, Heart, and Hustle to Build a More Empathetic World Empathy isn’t just a feeling—it’s a skill, a mindset, and a daily practice. As a future nurse, a single mother of five, and someone living with ADHD, I’ve come to understand empathy not from textbooks, but from the lived experience of struggle, growth, and the power of human connection. My journey has been anything but conventional. Balancing nursing school while raising five children on my own is a full-time commitment of its own. Add to that the mental and emotional hurdles of ADHD and grief from losing my mother to suicide, and I’ve walked through more hardship than many people see in a lifetime. But what could have hardened me has instead softened me. Every obstacle has taught me to listen more deeply, respond more gently, and support others more fully. The unique talents I bring into the world aren’t just academic or professional—they are emotional, spiritual, and human. I’ve developed the ability to see people not just for their roles—patient, classmate, coworker—but as complex individuals with stories, trauma, and untapped strength. That’s what I believe the global community needs more of: people who see beyond what’s visible. In my future nursing practice, I will lead with compassion. I want to work with underserved populations, particularly in women’s health and mental health care. I believe every patient deserves to feel safe, heard, and valued, no matter their background. Through trauma-informed care, I will help patients feel in control of their bodies and their stories, even in moments of deep vulnerability. Outside of the hospital or clinic, I plan to use my voice as an advocate and educator. I want to help destigmatize ADHD, mental illness, and single parenthood, particularly in communities of color where silence often reigns. My life has taught me that healing happens when we speak up, share, and uplift each other. Whether that’s through community events, mentorship, or even future writing and public speaking, I will build bridges of understanding between people who may never have seen themselves in one another—until now. Empathy on a global scale starts with empathy at home, in our classrooms, in waiting rooms, and in everyday moments. I may not have a loud platform (yet), but I have a loud heart—and it beats for justice, care, and connection. This scholarship would empower me to keep going, to finish school without the weight of financial strain, and to fully step into the role I believe I was born to play: healer, helper, and hope-bringer. When I think of the kind of world I want my children to grow up in, I imagine one where people pause to understand each other. Where no one is invisible. And where empathy isn’t rare—it’s expected. That’s the kind of world I’m working to build, one small act of care at a time.

Pushing Forward with Purpose: Living and Learning with ADHD My name is sharon cortez, and I am currently a nursing student with big dreams and even bigger determination. One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced on my academic journey is managing my ADHD—something that has shaped not just my education, but the way I view myself and the world around me. Living with ADHD means I process information differently, and that often results in needing more time, more repetition, and more effort than many of my peers. For me, one of the most difficult parts of nursing school has been theory classes. While I grasp concepts well in hands-on settings, lectures and long reading assignments feel overwhelming and, at times, impossible to retain. Despite my passion for healthcare and my deep desire to succeed, I’ve had to re-track or repeat theory classes not once, but twice every semester. At times, it’s felt like I’m running a marathon that keeps restarting just before the finish line. But I’ve never let that stop me. ADHD has tested my patience, my self-worth, and my resilience. It’s forced me to develop study habits tailored to my brain—using visual aids, teaching concepts to others, recording lectures to replay later, and breaking down material into manageable chunks. These strategies are not easy or fast, and success hasn’t come quickly. But each time I’ve failed a class and come back stronger, I’ve reminded myself why I’m doing this: because I want to become a nurse who truly understands what it means to struggle and keep going. Mental illness runs in my family as well. Growing up, I witnessed how undiagnosed and untreated conditions can cause long-term damage to self-esteem and relationships. These experiences have made me passionate about mental health—not just my own, but others’ too. I want to be the kind of nurse who recognizes the signs, who sees patients holistically, and who advocates fiercely for mental health to be treated with the same urgency as physical illness. I believe my ADHD, while a challenge, is also one of my greatest teachers. It has taught me how to be flexible, how to adapt, and how to empathize with others who learn and live differently. Instead of letting my diagnosis define my limits, I’ve used it to fuel my desire to succeed. Receiving this scholarship would not only help me financially—it would validate the journey I’ve been on. It would affirm that students like me, with invisible battles, deserve a seat at the table. I may have to work harder than others, but I’m proud of the work I’m doing. My experiences have shaped me into a future nurse who will be patient, persistent, and compassionate with every individual who crosses my path. ADHD is not the end of my story—it’s part of what makes it powerful. I’ve learned that success doesn’t always come quickly or easily, but with enough heart, anything is possible.

Lighting the Way Forward: My Journey and Impact Through Nursing My name is sharon Cortez, and I am a dedicated nursing student, a mother of five, and someone whose path to a career in healthcare has been shaped by resilience, personal loss, and an unwavering desire to serve others. My journey has been far from easy, but it has given me purpose. I believe every hardship I’ve overcome has prepared me to become not just a nurse, but a compassionate advocate for those who need someone to stand with them during their most vulnerable moments. One of the most defining moments in my life was losing my mother to suicide. Her passing left a hole in my world, but it also ignited a fire within me. It made me realize how deeply the healthcare system impacts families—not just physically, but emotionally and mentally. I began to reflect on how healthcare workers could have a role not just in treating illnesses, but in preventing tragedies like hers. That experience didn’t break me—it gave me direction. Today, I am well on my way to completing my nursing program. I am currently in my OB specialty and eagerly awaiting my remaining rotations in psych, pediatrics, orthoneuro, and cardiology. Each specialty brings new knowledge, but more importantly, it strengthens my understanding of the diverse needs of the patients I will serve. As a single mother of five, I have had to learn to balance parenting, school, work, and grief. While it has been challenging, it has also made me stronger. My children are my biggest motivators. I want them to see that no matter the circumstances you come from, you can create a life rooted in purpose, kindness, and resilience. I hope they learn through my example that service to others is one of the greatest gifts we can offer the world. My vision for the future is centered on community impact. I hope to work in underserved areas where access to quality healthcare is limited. I want to use my nursing degree to bring healing, education, and advocacy to people who may feel invisible in our healthcare system. Eventually, I plan to pursue certification as a nurse practitioner, which will allow me to broaden the scope of care I can provide and deepen the relationships I build with patients. Through nursing, I aim to make a lasting difference—not just through technical skill, but through human connection. I want to listen to the patients who feel unheard. I want to comfort those in pain, and celebrate victories, no matter how small, with families who have fought hard. I see nursing not just as a career, but as a calling. In a world often divided by struggle, fear, and inequality, I believe in the power of care and compassion to unite and heal. This is how I plan to make a positive impact: one patient, one family, one community at a time.
    Cariloop’s Caregiver Scholarship
The Caregiver Within: My Journey of Strength, Sacrifice, and Purpose Caregiving, for me, has never been a role I stepped into—it was a reality I grew up in. From a young age, I found myself offering comfort, stability, and care to others, often before I fully understood what those words truly meant. Over the years, caregiving has not only become part of my daily routine but also the driving force behind my aspirations to become a nurse. It has shaped my worldview, my goals, and the person I’ve grown into today. I am a single mother of five children, and I care for them with everything I have. My days are filled with diaper changes, homework help, doctor’s appointments, late-night fevers, emotional reassurance, meals, laundry, and everything in between. Each of my children has their own unique needs, personalities, and challenges, and being their sole caregiver means I must adapt, listen, and lead with love and patience every day. Beyond physical care, I also strive to provide emotional and mental support to each of them, especially after the immense loss we suffered when my mother passed away by suicide. Losing my mother shattered me in ways I didn’t expect. She had always been a constant in my life—our emotional rock, our biggest cheerleader. Her passing left behind questions, grief, and a quiet but profound sense of responsibility. I had to become not only a caregiver for my children but a nurturer of broken hearts, including my own. In caring for them, I found the strength to keep moving. My children needed me, and through them, I found my purpose again. Being a caregiver has given me a front-row seat to the vulnerabilities of life. It has taught me how crucial compassion, patience, and presence are. It’s also made me realize that many people in the world—especially single parents, the elderly, the disabled, and those struggling with mental illness—are constantly balancing survival with the hope that someone will care enough to help. That’s why I decided to become a nurse. I want to extend that same care I give my children to the wider world. I want to show up for people in their most fragile moments and remind them they’re not alone. Caregiving has also made me a better student. It’s helped me manage my time wisely, remain organized, and push through exhaustion and adversity to keep chasing my dreams. I am currently in nursing school, and I’ve completed my OB specialty. I’m preparing to take on my final specialties in psychiatry, pediatrics, orthoneuro, and cardiovascular nursing. I am incredibly proud of how far I’ve come, but I also know how much more I want to do. My ultimate goal is to become a registered nurse and eventually earn my nurse practitioner license, specializing in mental health and family care. I want to offer families—especially those who feel overlooked—the kind of holistic, compassionate care I always wished for during my most challenging times. Receiving this scholarship would be more than just financial assistance—it would be a lifeline. As a single mother putting myself through nursing school, every dollar counts. Tuition, books, uniforms, transportation, childcare—everything adds up quickly, and there are days I have to choose between gas money and groceries. This scholarship would not only help cover those costs, but it would ease the stress that often weighs heavily on my shoulders. More importantly, it would be a validation of everything I’m fighting for—that someone out there believes in me, sees my struggle, and thinks I’m worth investing in. With this scholarship, I could focus more fully on my clinical training and less on how I’ll afford my next semester. It would mean fewer missed meals and more study time, fewer late nights worrying and more moments of quality with my children. It would be a step closer to my dream of becoming a nurse—a dream born out of caregiving, grief, and a deep desire to give back. Caregiving has shaped my soul, refined my purpose, and inspired my career path. It has taught me what real strength looks like—not loud and boastful, but quiet and enduring. As I continue this journey, I carry my mother’s memory, my children’s hope, and my own resilience as proof that I am capable of overcoming anything. And with support from this scholarship, I’ll be one step closer to lifting others up just as I’ve lifted my family.

Answering the Call: A Commitment to Emergency Services and Community Care Emergency services represent far more than fast response times and lifesaving interventions—they symbolize hope, stability, and compassion in some of the most chaotic and vulnerable moments of people’s lives. For me, nursing in emergency and critical care settings is not just a professional aspiration; it is a heartfelt calling rooted in a lifetime of experiences that have taught me the importance of courage, compassion, and community. I am pursuing this career not only because I want to help others, but because I believe I have a responsibility to give back to the very communities that have supported me through my own struggles. My passion for emergency services is deeply personal. I’ve experienced firsthand what it’s like to rely on emergency care, both through my family’s medical needs and through my own role as a caregiver. Most notably, my mother’s struggle with mental illness and her eventual death by suicide shaped my understanding of what it means to truly need support in a moment of crisis. I remember the helplessness I felt when emergency responders came too late, and how that single moment changed the course of my life. From that pain, a purpose was born—I would become the person who shows up when it matters most. I would be the steady hand, the calming voice, the one who sees the whole human being, not just their injury or illness. Today, I am nearing the end of my nursing education. I’ve completed my OB rotation and am preparing to enter psychiatric, pediatric, orthoneuro, and cardiovascular specialties. These rotations will help shape my clinical foundation, but I am particularly drawn to the fast-paced and unpredictable nature of emergency care. I am fascinated by triage, critical thinking under pressure, and the teamwork that defines emergency response. After graduation, I plan to work in an ER or trauma unit, with the long-term goal of becoming a nurse practitioner specializing in emergency or psychiatric care. Eventually, I hope to become a clinical educator so I can help train the next generation of emergency nurses. In every step of this journey, my focus remains on community. As a single mother of five, I understand what it means to feel underserved, overlooked, and exhausted. I understand the barriers to healthcare—whether it's transportation, childcare, or cost—and I know how important it is for patients to feel seen, heard, and respected. That’s why I’m committed to returning to the communities that raised me and serving in public hospitals, mobile clinics, or crisis centers where care is often limited but desperately needed. Community involvement has always been part of my life. I’ve volunteered at health fairs, school supply drives, and women’s shelters, offering my time and care wherever I can. But my ultimate goal is to go beyond volunteering and build sustainable systems of support. I want to develop outreach programs that educate families about preventative care, mental health, and emergency preparedness. I want to work with local organizations to provide health screenings, CPR training, and resources for at-risk youth. I want to help create a world where emergency care isn’t just reactive—but proactive, accessible, and human-centered. Receiving this scholarship would be a critical step in that journey. The financial burden of nursing school, especially as a parent, is significant. This support would allow me to dedicate more time to my clinical training and community work, while also easing the daily stressors that come with raising a family on a limited income. More importantly, it would affirm that my goals are worth fighting for—that someone believes in my ability to make a difference. My life has been shaped by challenge, but also by resilience. Every hardship has prepared me to be a better nurse, a better mother, and a better member of my community. I am not pursuing emergency nursing for recognition or reward, but because I have lived on both sides of the hospital bed, and I know the power of presence, kindness, and competent care. I am determined to be that presence for others—to meet people in their darkest hours and remind them they are not alone. Thank you for the opportunity to share my story and for your consideration in supporting the next chapter of my journey in emergency healthcare.

Fueling My Purpose: How This Scholarship Will Help Me Build a Future in Nursing My plan for the future is clear and deeply rooted in my personal experiences: I am going to become a registered nurse, use my voice to advocate for compassionate care, and serve vulnerable populations—especially those struggling with mental health. Nursing is not just a career choice for me; it is my life’s calling. With each clinical, exam, and late-night study session, I am building the skills and strength necessary to turn that vision into reality. Currently, I am in the final phase of my nursing education. I have completed several core courses and have recently finished my OB rotation. I’m now preparing for my remaining specialty rotations in psychiatric, pediatric, orthoneuro, and cardiovascular nursing. These rotations will allow me to experience diverse patient care environments, helping me solidify the area where I hope to begin my practice. I am most passionate about mental health and women’s health, and I plan to start my career in a hospital setting that allows me to combine these interests while gaining essential bedside experience. Long-term, I want to continue my education and become a nurse practitioner, specializing in psychiatric mental health. This goal stems from losing my mother to suicide—a tragedy that taught me the devastating impact of untreated mental illness. That loss changed me forever, and it inspired a deep desire to be the nurse who sees, listens, and offers help before it’s too late. I want to advocate for better access to mental health care, especially for underserved communities where stigma and lack of resources often lead to silent suffering. As a single mother of five children, I carry a great deal of responsibility. Balancing school and parenting has not been easy, but it has made me incredibly disciplined and determined. My children are my greatest motivation; I want them to see that no dream is out of reach if you are willing to work for it. I study at night while they sleep, cook dinner between assignments, and show up to clinicals after helping with homework. Every step I take is a step closer to creating a better life for them and for the patients I will one day serve. This scholarship would be more than financial aid—it would be a lifeline. It would allow me to reduce my work hours and focus more on my studies and clinical training. It would help me afford textbooks, transportation, uniforms, and exam fees, all of which can be overwhelming as a student and a parent. But most importantly, it would be a vote of confidence in my future. It would say that someone believes in my potential to make a difference—and I intend to do just that. With this scholarship, I will continue my journey not only to become a nurse, but to become the kind of nurse who heals with skill, heart, and purpose. Thank you for considering me.
    RELEVANCE Scholarship
Shaped by Challenge, Driven by Purpose Every chapter of my life—no matter how painful—has pushed me toward a deeper understanding of the kind of nurse and healer I want to be. My journey to a career in medicine is rooted not in ease, but in resilience. It’s a story of navigating trauma, grief, and hardship while still moving forward with determination and hope. These experiences haven’t just influenced my decision to pursue nursing; they have defined it. The most life-altering event for me was the loss of my mother to suicide. Her passing shattered me in ways I can still barely put into words. As I tried to make sense of the grief, I kept asking myself what could have been done differently. Was there someone who could have noticed the pain she hid so well? That question haunts me, but it also drives me. I want to be that someone for others. I want to recognize the quiet cries for help and be a source of strength and compassion for those silently struggling. Her loss taught me that medicine isn’t just about treating illness—it’s about recognizing the humanity behind each patient. At the same time, I’ve faced my own daily challenges. I am a single mother raising five children while attending nursing school full-time. Balancing coursework, clinicals, and parenting is an exhausting endeavor, but one that has taught me the value of time, presence, and grit. Every test I pass, every shift I complete, and every tired night of studying after the kids go to bed is a testament to how badly I want to make a difference. My children watch me pursue my dream, and I hope they learn through me that no hardship is too great when your purpose is strong. Currently, I am in the midst of my nursing specialty rotations—finishing OB and preparing to enter psychiatric, pediatric, orthoneuro, and cardiovascular specialties. These diverse experiences have reinforced that I want to work in a setting where I can provide both physical care and emotional support. I am especially drawn to psychiatric nursing, where I feel I can help others like my mother—people who feel invisible in their pain. My past has made me deeply empathetic, grounded, and unafraid of challenge. I understand what it feels like to be overwhelmed, unheard, and unsupported, which makes me uniquely equipped to care for others with patience and respect. I hope to one day work not only at the bedside but also in mental health advocacy—bridging the gap between physical medicine and emotional care, especially in underserved communities. Receiving the RELEVANCE Scholarship would not just support my education—it would validate the belief that our personal stories, however difficult, are powerful tools for change. I carry my scars into every patient room, not as signs of weakness, but as proof that healing is possible. Through nursing, I intend to pass that belief forward—one patient, one family, one moment of kindness at a time.

Why I Decided to Pursue Education in Healthcare and My Future Career Goals My decision to pursue education in healthcare is deeply personal and born out of both my passion for helping others and the profound challenges I have faced in my own life. Growing up, I witnessed how healthcare professionals can be a source of comfort and healing, not only for physical ailments but also during emotional and mental crises. One of the most defining and painful moments that shaped my path was losing my mother to suicide. This heartbreaking experience made me realize the critical importance of compassionate care, especially in times of mental health struggles. It inspired me to dedicate myself to a career where I can provide hope, healing, and support to others facing their darkest moments. Healthcare, to me, is more than just a career; it is a calling to serve others with empathy and expertise. After my mother’s passing, I became determined to not only understand the physical side of health but also the emotional and psychological aspects that often go unseen. This motivated me to focus on specialties that address comprehensive patient care, including psychiatry, where I can help those battling mental health issues like my mother did. I am currently pursuing nursing education with a focus on multiple specialties—obstetrics, psychiatry, pediatrics, orthopedics-neurology, and cardiology—to gain the broad knowledge needed to care for patients holistically. Each specialty provides me with unique tools to approach patient care with empathy and competence, which I believe is essential to making a true difference. My goal is to become a nurse who not only treats illness but also advocates for patients’ mental and emotional well-being. I want to help break the stigma surrounding mental health by offering compassionate, nonjudgmental support. I also hope to educate and empower my community to take charge of their health, promoting wellness and prevention before crises develop. Balancing my studies while raising five children as a single mother has taught me resilience, patience, and the power of perseverance. These life experiences have strengthened my ability to manage stress and connect deeply with people in vulnerable situations. I believe these qualities will make me a better nurse—one who listens carefully, cares wholeheartedly, and never gives up on a patient. In pursuing healthcare education, I am turning my personal pain into purpose. I want to be a beacon of hope for others who are struggling, just as I needed hope when my mother passed away. Through nursing, I aim to make a positive, lasting impact on individuals and families, helping them find healing, comfort, and strength in their own health journeys.

Personal Statement My journey toward a career in healthcare has been shaped by profound challenges, resilience, and a deep commitment to serving others. As a single mother of five children, juggling the demands of parenting alongside pursuing my education has tested my strength and perseverance every day. Adding to the complexity of my path, I endured the heartbreaking loss of my mother to suicide — a tragedy that left a lasting mark on my life and fueled my desire to make a difference through compassionate healthcare. Raising five children on my own means my life is a continuous balancing act. My days begin early and end late, filled with managing school responsibilities, household duties, and nurturing my family. There have been moments when exhaustion threatened to overwhelm me, but the love for my children and the example I want to set for them keep me moving forward. Pursuing my education isn’t just about personal achievement; it’s about creating a better future for my family and showing my children that despite hardships, determination and hard work can open doors. The loss of my mother to suicide was a pivotal moment that forever changed how I view health and healing. Witnessing the emotional pain and grief that followed opened my eyes to the critical importance of mental health care, and the urgent need for compassionate support systems for both patients and their families. This experience gave me firsthand insight into the silent struggles so many face and inspired me to dedicate my life to becoming a healthcare provider who not only treats physical ailments but also addresses emotional and mental well-being. Healthcare, to me, is more than a profession — it is a calling. I want to be a source of comfort, strength, and hope for individuals and families during their most vulnerable moments. Through my education and life experience, I aspire to provide holistic care that considers every aspect of a person’s health. Whether I am helping a patient recover from illness, offering reassurance to a worried family, or advocating for improved healthcare services, my goal is to make a meaningful and lasting impact. My personal journey has taught me qualities that I believe are essential to becoming an excellent healthcare provider: resilience, empathy, adaptability, and patience. I’ve learned how to navigate stress while remaining calm and focused, skills that are invaluable when caring for others in high-pressure situations. I also understand the importance of listening and connecting on a human level — recognizing that healing often requires more than just medical treatment. Despite the challenges life has thrown my way, I am confident that my experiences have uniquely prepared me for this career. I bring with me not only academic knowledge but also a well of compassion and life wisdom that will help me support my patients through their own struggles. My hope is that through my work, I can honor my mother’s memory by turning pain into purpose, helping others find light in their darkest hours. Ultimately, I want to use my career in healthcare to contribute to my community by providing care that is empathetic, respectful, and inclusive. I aim to be a positive force for change, promoting mental health awareness and advocating for patients who may otherwise be overlooked. This journey is not only about healing individuals — it is about building a legacy of hope, strength, and compassion for generations to come.

Embracing the Journey: My Greatest Achievement and Future Aspirations Looking back on my life so far, I would say that my greatest achievement to date has not been a trophy, certificate, or recognition from others. Instead, my most meaningful achievement has been my decision to return to school and pursue a career in nursing—despite obstacles, doubts, and the fear of starting over. That choice represents more than an academic or professional milestone—it reflects a deeper transformation in how I view myself, my purpose, and my potential. For years, I carried around the quiet weight of dreams deferred. Life presented detours—personal responsibilities, financial setbacks, moments of self-doubt. There were times when I questioned whether I had missed my chance to pursue a meaningful career, or whether it was too late to go after something that had been in my heart for so long. But then something shifted. I realized that the only expiration date on a dream is the one we place on it ourselves. I chose to begin again—and that single decision changed everything. Returning to school was not easy. I was older than many of my classmates, juggling coursework with family responsibilities, work, and moments of emotional exhaustion. Yet every class I passed, every clinical hour I completed, and every challenge I overcame reminded me why I started this journey. I discovered within myself a resilience I never knew I had. I learned how to ask for help when I needed it, to stay committed even when progress felt slow, and to keep showing up for my future no matter what yesterday looked like. This journey has also taught me about courage—the kind that comes not from loud declarations, but from quiet perseverance. It taught me that strength doesn’t always look like confidence; sometimes, it looks like getting up and trying again even when no one is watching. It taught me that the best investment I can make is in myself, and that pursuing a life of service through nursing is not only worthwhile—it is necessary. Today, I am proud to say that I’m nearing the completion of my nursing specialties. I’ve already completed OB, and I’m preparing to take on psychiatry, pediatrics, orthoneuro, and cardiovascular courses. I am gaining the knowledge and skills that will allow me to make a real impact in people’s lives—not just treating illness, but offering care, understanding, and advocacy in times of need. In the future, I hope to work in a hospital or clinic that serves underserved populations. My dream is to be a voice and a presence for patients who often feel unheard or invisible in the healthcare system. I want to use my knowledge not just to heal, but to educate—helping patients understand their conditions and empowering them to take charge of their health. I also hope to contribute to my community beyond the clinical setting. Whether it’s through mentoring young students interested in healthcare, organizing community health screenings, or advocating for policy changes that improve access to care, I want to be a nurse who not only works within the system but works to improve it. Long term, I see myself possibly returning to school again—this time to become a nurse practitioner or educator. I want to continue growing, learning, and finding new ways to give back. The impact that nurses have doesn’t stop at the bedside, and I want to be part of that bigger picture. My greatest achievement—choosing to believe in myself and take that first step back into education—has already changed my life. But more importantly, it has positioned me to change the lives of others. That is something I will always be proud of.

Making a Positive Impact Through Nursing My name is Sharon Cortez, and I am currently a nursing student, steadily working toward my dream of becoming a registered nurse. My journey has not been a straight path, but every step has led me to discover how deeply I want to make a difference in the lives of others. I chose the medical field—specifically nursing—because it is one of the few careers that combines science, empathy, service, and the potential to change lives in real and lasting ways. I come from a community where access to quality healthcare was not always guaranteed. Growing up, I witnessed friends and family members struggle with chronic conditions and delayed diagnoses, not because they didn’t care about their health, but because they didn’t have the access or support they needed. These experiences stayed with me. I knew early on that I didn’t just want a job—I wanted to be a part of the solution. I wanted to be a source of care and information for those who are too often left behind by the healthcare system. Currently, I am completing my nursing specialties. I have finished my rotation in obstetrics and am preparing to take psychiatric, pediatric, orthoneuro, and cardiovascular specialties. Every course, clinical, and patient interaction reminds me why I chose this path: to be an advocate, a listener, a healer, and a source of strength for those who need it. I plan to graduate not only with the knowledge to treat illness but also with the heart to treat people. My goal is to use my nursing degree to serve vulnerable and underserved populations. I am especially passionate about public health and preventative care. In the future, I want to work in a community-based setting, focusing on education and outreach programs that empower people to take control of their health. This might include creating mobile health clinics, organizing community health screenings, or working with local schools to promote healthy living from a young age. I believe that small, consistent efforts in the community can lead to generational change. I also hope to mentor other young people—especially those from backgrounds like mine—who are interested in healthcare careers but don’t know where to begin. Representation matters, and I want others to see themselves in me and believe that their dreams are valid and achievable. For me, nursing is more than just a profession; it is a way to bring light and care into a world that sometimes feels overwhelming. I want to be the nurse who stays a little longer, listens a little more closely, and advocates a little louder for every patient I serve. Whether it’s holding a patient’s hand during a difficult diagnosis or helping someone understand how to manage a chronic condition, I am committed to making the world a little better—one person, one community at a time. Through compassion, education, and service, I plan to leave a lasting mark on this world as a nurse who truly cared.

Why I Want to Pursue a Degree in Nursing and How I Hope to Contribute to My Community My desire to pursue a degree in nursing comes from a deep-rooted passion to serve others and make a lasting impact on lives. Nursing is more than a profession to me—it is a calling that combines compassion, science, and the unique privilege of caring for people during their most vulnerable moments. I have always been drawn to the emotional strength and resilience that nurses embody. Their ability to provide not only physical care but also emotional support is what makes the nursing profession one of the most human-centered roles in healthcare. This blend of technical skill and heartfelt compassion is what I hope to bring to my future career as a nurse. Growing up in a family where illness was often present, I saw firsthand the difference a kind, competent nurse can make. I watched nurses advocate for my loved ones, explaining complex medical information in ways we could understand and showing a level of patience and empathy that gave us peace, even in difficult times. Those moments planted a seed in me. I realized that nurses are not just caregivers—they are educators, protectors, and often, a source of strength when everything else feels uncertain. Currently, I am in the final stretch of completing my nursing specialties. I have finished OB and am awaiting my placements in psychiatric nursing, pediatrics, orthoneuro, and cardiology. Each rotation brings me closer to a more comprehensive understanding of how I can best serve patients and adapt to the wide range of needs within my community. These experiences are shaping me into a nurse who will be both clinically competent and emotionally intelligent. My vision as a nurse extends beyond hospital walls. I want to give back to my community through outreach, education, and advocacy. I believe that accessible, preventative care can change the trajectory of lives, especially in underserved communities where health disparities persist. I plan to volunteer my time educating families on nutrition, chronic disease management, mental health, and the importance of regular check-ups. I want to be a bridge between people and the healthcare they need, especially for those who may feel unseen or unheard. Eventually, I hope to pursue a role in public health nursing or community-based care, where I can work directly with vulnerable populations, helping to reduce health inequities and increase access to services. I also want to serve as a role model for younger students in my community—especially those from minority or low-income backgrounds—showing them that a career in nursing is not only possible but profoundly meaningful. Earning my nursing degree is not just a personal achievement; it is a commitment to making a difference. I am ready to dedicate my time, energy, and heart to becoming the kind of nurse who brings healing, hope, and justice to every patient and every space I enter. Nursing is the path that allows me to align my passion with my purpose, and I look forward to serving my community with empathy, skill, and unwavering dedication.

What Becoming a Nurse Means to Me Becoming a nurse is more than a career goal—it’s a calling, a purpose, and the embodiment of who I strive to be at my core. To me, being a nurse means standing at the intersection of science and humanity, of knowledge and compassion. It means showing up, not just with clinical skill, but with a heart open enough to carry the pain, the hope, and the healing of others. It is a commitment to being present in the most sacred and often most difficult moments of another person’s life. When I think about what it means to become a nurse, I think about my own journey—my struggles, my resilience, and the deep sense of empathy that grew from it. I’ve seen suffering up close—both in my personal life and through the eyes of those I’ve cared for. I’ve been the family member sitting helplessly beside a hospital bed, praying for good news. I’ve felt what it’s like to place all your trust in a nurse’s hands. And I’ve also seen the light in someone’s eyes when they’re told they’re going to be okay. These experiences shaped me. They taught me that healing isn’t always about curing. Sometimes it’s about listening, comforting, holding space for someone’s fear, or just being there when no one else knows what to say. Nursing, to me, is about sacred service. It is the art of bringing dignity to every moment, even the hardest ones. It’s about holding a patient's hand when they receive devastating news, celebrating the small victories—like a first breath after surgery or a new mom holding her baby—and being a steady, unwavering presence through it all. Nurses do more than carry out doctors’ orders; we carry the weight of people’s stories, their struggles, their humanity. That responsibility is profound. It humbles me. Becoming a nurse also means becoming an advocate—not just for patients, but for change. I want to be part of a generation of nurses who push for equity in care, who speak up for the voiceless, who fight to ensure no one is overlooked or underserved. I want to contribute to a culture of empathy and justice within the healthcare system, where all people—regardless of their background—are treated with compassion and respect. Personally, nursing represents transformation. It is proof that I am capable of rising above my doubts and fears to become someone who can truly make a difference. Every hour spent studying, every exam I’ve passed, every clinical rotation I’ve worked—each one brings me closer to the nurse I dream of becoming. The journey hasn’t been easy, but it has been deeply meaningful. It’s shown me the strength I didn’t know I had and has connected me to a sense of purpose greater than myself. To become a nurse is to dedicate your life to love in action. It’s to hold onto hope, even in dark places. It’s to be brave enough to care and kind enough to stay soft in a world that often hardens us. It’s not just what I want to do—it’s who I want to be.

My Calling to Nursing: A Career of Compassion, Growth, and Purpose The nursing profession has always stood out to me as more than just a job—it’s a career rooted in compassion, resilience, and purpose. What drew me to nursing was not only the opportunity to care for others in their most vulnerable moments but also the profound impact nurses have on the lives of patients and families. The blend of hands-on care, critical thinking, and human connection is exactly what I was looking for in a career. Nursing allows me to serve my community, grow intellectually, and be a force for good in people’s lives. My long-term goal is to become a registered nurse and eventually specialize in either obstetrics or psychiatric nursing. I’m currently working through my nursing specialties—having completed OB and preparing to take Psych, Pediatrics, Ortho-Neuro, and Cardiology. Each of these areas gives me a deeper appreciation for the complexity and depth of the nursing profession, and I’m eager to learn how to support patients across the spectrum of health care needs. In the future, I hope to become a certified nurse educator as well, so I can help train and inspire the next generation of nurses. Throughout my educational journey, I’ve had several personal accomplishments that have affirmed my commitment to nursing. One of the most meaningful was completing my OB clinical rotation, where I was able to assist during labor and postpartum care. Being a part of that life-changing moment for families gave me a deep sense of responsibility and purpose. Another proud moment was successfully balancing full-time nursing coursework with family and personal responsibilities, which has strengthened my time management skills, determination, and work ethic—qualities essential for success in the nursing field. My interest in nursing is also rooted in personal experience. A few years ago, a close family member was hospitalized with a serious illness, and during that time, I witnessed firsthand the difference nurses made in her recovery—not just physically, but emotionally. Their patience, empathy, and skill left a lasting impression on me. In addition, I’ve participated in community health fairs and volunteered at local clinics, where I had the chance to assist with basic health screenings, patient education, and intake processes. These experiences gave me early exposure to the clinical environment and reinforced how much I enjoyed interacting with patients and contributing to their well-being. Every opportunity I’ve had to serve in a medical capacity has solidified my commitment to becoming a nurse. The nursing industry excites me because it’s a profession of lifelong learning and service. As a nurse, I’ll never stop growing—there will always be new techniques to learn, new challenges to face, and new people to help. My passion for health care, personal resilience, and desire to make a difference all align with what it means to be a nurse. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, and I’m determined to continue pushing forward until I achieve my dream.

My Journey to Nursing: A Path of Purpose and Perseverance Returning to school to pursue a degree in nursing has been one of the most defining and fulfilling decisions of my life. Like many adult learners, my path hasn’t been a straight line—it’s been a winding journey full of growth, reflection, and, most importantly, clarity of purpose. I’m currently in the middle of my specialties rotation, having completed OB and now preparing to take Psychiatric Nursing, Pediatrics, Ortho-Neuro, and Cardiology. Every clinical experience and lecture brings me one step closer to the nurse I aspire to become. I didn’t start my academic journey knowing I wanted to be a nurse. Initially, I pursued another major, but over time, I felt a disconnect between what I was studying and what truly inspired me. I’ve always been a person who enjoys helping others and being present for people during difficult times. Despite success in other areas, I realized I needed a career that involved more personal connection—something with meaning, heart, and service. That realization led me to seriously consider nursing, and once I began exploring the field, I knew I had found my calling. The “aha” moment that confirmed nursing was the right path came during a hospital visit with a close family friend. She was battling a chronic illness and had been in and out of facilities. What stood out most was how much of her experience depended not just on the doctors’ expertise, but on the compassion and skill of her nurses. One particular nurse took the time to truly listen—not just to her symptoms, but to her fears, frustrations, and even her small wins. That experience opened my eyes to the kind of impact nurses have—not only medically, but emotionally and holistically. It was in that moment I realized: I want to be that person for someone else. Since beginning nursing school, I’ve been challenged academically and personally in ways I never imagined, but I’ve also found a deep sense of satisfaction and pride. The courses I’ve taken so far have helped me build a strong foundation in anatomy, pharmacology, and patient care. Each specialty rotation gives me a better understanding of how diverse and impactful this profession truly is. I am especially looking forward to Psych and Pediatrics, where I can learn more about how emotional and developmental factors shape health care. Cardiology and Ortho-Neuro will give me the clinical knowledge I need to handle complex cases and provide excellent care. What keeps me motivated is knowing that every day I spend studying or in clinicals is preparing me to be an advocate for others—someone who can make a real difference when it matters most. I also carry with me a deep appreciation for the opportunity to return to school, pursue this dream, and become part of a profession that I deeply respect and admire. Nursing is more than a career goal for me—it is my purpose. It’s the intersection of compassion, science, resilience, and humanity. I am proud of how far I’ve come, and I look forward to completing my remaining specialties and stepping into the field ready to serve.

Why I Chose Nursing: A Personal Journey of Purpose and Passion When I was twelve years old, I spent countless days in a hospital visiting my grandmother after she had major surgery. At that age, I didn’t fully understand what was happening medically—but I clearly remember the nurses. They didn’t just give medication or change IV bags. They smiled, comforted, explained things in ways our family could understand, and most importantly, they treated my grandmother like a person—not just a patient. I remember one nurse in particular who stayed late after her shift just to sit with my grandmother when she was afraid to be alone. That moment stuck with me, and it planted the seed that would grow into my dream of becoming a nurse. Since that time, I’ve been drawn to health care, especially nursing, because it represents everything I value—compassion, hard work, human connection, and lifelong learning. As I’ve grown, I’ve pursued opportunities to serve others, whether through volunteering at a local clinic or helping classmates understand challenging material in science classes. I’ve also spent time shadowing nurses and have spoken with several about the joys and challenges of the field. These experiences confirmed what I’ve always felt deep down: that nursing is not just a job—it’s a purpose. I am especially passionate about helping underserved communities. As someone who has witnessed firsthand the disparities in access to quality health care, I want to be part of the change. My long-term goal is to become a registered nurse and work in public health to bring care and education to populations who need it most. I believe nursing gives me the unique ability to impact lives both one-on-one and on a community level. My journey to this point hasn’t been without obstacles. I’ve had to balance school, part-time jobs, and family responsibilities. These challenges have made me more resilient, focused, and determined. They’ve taught me how to manage my time, ask for help when needed, and persevere even when things get tough. I know these are qualities I will carry into my future career as a nurse. Nursing is a field that combines science and empathy in a way few other professions can. I am excited to begin this journey, knowing that every step I take brings me closer to helping others in their most vulnerable moments—just as those nurses once helped my family and me. I learned about this scholarship from my academic advisor at Broward College.

Finding Resilience and Hope After Tragedy: My Journey as a Suicide Loss Survivor Losing a loved one to suicide is an experience that brings profound pain and grief, and for me, that loss came when I tragically lost my mom. Her sudden passing left a deep void, one that I was never prepared to face. As I reflect on my journey, I realize that the challenges, lessons, and resilience I’ve encountered have shaped who I am today. I’ve learned that healing is not linear, and it’s okay to feel broken. Despite the pain, I’ve discovered an inner strength that gives me hope for the future. After my mom’s death, I was overwhelmed by anger, guilt, sadness, and confusion. I struggled to find a sense of normalcy, constantly questioning why this had to happen, why I couldn’t save her, and why the world seemed to be against me. Every milestone and special moment felt incomplete without her. She was my rock, my biggest supporter, and her absence was deeply felt in every aspect of my life. There were days when simply getting out of bed seemed impossible, and it was hard to envision a future without her. However, over time, I began to learn valuable lessons from the pain. One important lesson I learned is that healing doesn’t mean forgetting, and grief doesn’t have a set timeline. Carrying the pain with me doesn’t define me. While there have been moments of darkness, there have also been moments of light. In those moments, I realized that my mom’s life had great meaning, and I owed it to her and myself to continue living in a way that honors her memory. I found resilience through purpose. For me, that purpose has come through education and service. I am determined to achieve my academic goals and pursue a career in healthcare, where I can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Losing my mom highlighted the importance of mental health, and I want to be part of a field that supports those struggling emotionally and psychologically. The Jean Ramirez Scholarship offers me the opportunity to continue pursuing my education and healing. It would alleviate the financial burden of tuition and living expenses, allowing me to focus on my studies and personal growth. This scholarship would also serve as a reminder that resilience is possible, and that even after experiencing deep loss, we can still build fulfilling lives. In conclusion, my journey as a suicide loss survivor has been one of heartache, challenges, and growth. Losing my mom to suicide has profoundly shaped my life, but through education, service, and perseverance, I have found strength and hope. This scholarship will provide the financial support and encouragement I need to continue my journey, pushing toward my goals and honoring my mom’s memory along the way.

Balancing Parenthood and Education: A Path Toward a Better Future Being both a single parent and a student is one of the most challenging experiences I have faced in my life. Balancing the demands of raising a child while pursuing my degree often feels like an uphill battle. I understand that the sacrifices I make today are investments in a better tomorrow—for both myself and my child. The Single Parent Scholarship by Organic Formula Shop is an incredible opportunity for me to ease the burden of my educational costs and pave the way toward a brighter future. The most challenging aspect of being a single parent and a student is managing time and finances. As a parent, my child’s needs come first—whether it is ensuring they are fed, getting them to school, or attending to their emotional needs. All of this takes a significant amount of time and energy. As a student, my commitment to studying, completing assignments, and maintaining a certain academic standing is just as demanding. The limited hours in a day and the constant need to prioritize responsibilities often leave me feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. On top of this, financial strain is a constant reality. Juggling school tuition, childcare expenses, and everyday living costs often feels like a balancing act that could fall apart at any moment. Additionally, financial resources are one of the most pressing challenges single parents face while pursuing higher education. Unlike some of my peers, I do not have a partner to share the financial burden or childcare responsibilities with. This means I must balance work, school, and parenting without the cushion of a second income. Every semester, I rely heavily on scholarships, financial aid, and part-time work to cover tuition and expenses. However, even with these resources, there is always the underlying anxiety that there may not be enough funds to meet all of my needs. This scholarship would provide vital financial assistance, easing the pressure on my finances and allowing me to focus more on my studies and less on making ends meet. With my degree, I will be able to provide a stable and fulfilling life for my child, ensuring they have access to opportunities and experiences that will help them thrive. The $2,000 from this scholarship would provide me with the opportunity to cover part of my tuition and childcare costs. This would significantly ease the burden of my financial struggles and allow me to dedicate more time to my studies without the constant worry of how I will make ends meet. It would also give me the freedom to invest more in personal growth and educational resources, such as books and tools for studying, which are vital for my academic success. In addition, the financial relief would allow me to balance my responsibilities better, knowing that I am supported by a community that understands the struggles of single parents like me. More importantly, this scholarship is not just about the financial relief; it is a symbol of hope and encouragement. Embracing Challenges: How My Disability Shaped My Beliefs, Relationships, and Career Goals My name is Sharon Cortez, and my journey has been deeply influenced by my experience with ADHD and anxiety, both of which have shaped my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. While these challenges have presented obstacles, they have also fueled my ambition, resilience, and passion for healthcare and advocacy. Through perseverance and self-awareness, I have learned to embrace my disability as a strength rather than a limitation, and I strive to use my experiences to make a meaningful impact in my field and community. Growing up, I always had a deep desire to help others, but my struggles with focus, organization, and anxiety made it difficult for me to navigate traditional academic and social settings. I was diagnosed with ADHD while in college, and receiving that diagnosis was both a relief and a challenge. It helped me understand why I had struggled with time management and concentration, but it also made me realize that I needed to advocate for myself and develop strategies to succeed. Instead of letting my disability hold me back, I learned to adapt and push forward, which strengthened my belief in the importance of resilience, inclusivity, and accessibility—values that now drive my personal and professional life. My experience with disability has also shaped my relationships. Learning to navigate ADHD and anxiety made me more empathetic and understanding toward others who face challenges, whether visible or invisible. I have developed strong communication skills and deep appreciation for the importance of support systems, both personally and professionally. My struggles taught me the value of patience, flexibility, and mutual encouragement, which I apply not only in my relationships but also in my work and leadership roles. As someone pursuing a career in nursing, my experiences with ADHD and anxiety have made me passionate about mental health advocacy and patient care. I understand firsthand how frustrating it can be to feel misunderstood or dismissed due to a condition that affects daily life. This perspective has motivated me to work toward a healthcare system that is more inclusive, compassionate, and patient-centered. I aspire to be a nurse who not only provides medical care but also empowers and supports patients dealing with disabilities or mental health challenges. Beyond my academic and career goals, I have actively sought leadership opportunities that allow me to advocate for others facing similar struggles. Whether through volunteering in healthcare settings, mentoring peers, or participating in initiatives that promote mental health awareness and disability rights, I am committed to using my voice and experiences to create positive change. My leadership has been driven by the belief that everyone deserves equal opportunities and support, no matter their challenges. Receiving this scholarship would not only alleviate the financial burden of my education but also further empower me to pursue my mission of improving healthcare accessibility and advocating for individuals with disabilities. Ultimately, my disability has shaped me into a more compassionate, determined, and driven individual. It has influenced my relationships by making me more understanding, strengthened my career aspirations by inspiring me to advocate for inclusive healthcare, and reinforced my belief that everyone—regardless of their challenges—deserves to be seen, heard, and supported. With the right mindset and perseverance, I know that I can turn my struggles into a source of empowerment and change, both for myself and for others.

Balancing Mental Health and Academic Success My journey through college has been shaped by my experiences with ADHD and anxiety, both of which have had a profound impact on my academic performance and personal life. When I was diagnosed with ADHD in college, it helped me understand why I often struggled with focus, time management, and staying organized despite my best efforts. My anxiety, on the other hand, added another layer of challenges, making it difficult to manage stress, stay confident in my abilities, and maintain a sense of balance between my education and personal well-being. Academically, ADHD has made it challenging for me to concentrate during lectures, retain information from long readings, and complete assignments on time. I have often found myself procrastinating or hyper-focusing on one task while neglecting others, leading to frustration and self-doubt. My anxiety exacerbates these struggles by causing me to overthink assignments, worry excessively about grades, and feel overwhelmed by deadlines. However, instead of letting these challenges define me, I have taken proactive steps to prioritize my mental health while striving for academic success. To manage my ADHD, I have developed structured routines that help me stay organized and focused. I use planners, digital calendars, and reminder apps to keep track of assignments, exams, and daily responsibilities. Breaking tasks into smaller, manageable steps has also helped me stay productive without feeling overwhelmed. Additionally, I have sought academic support by utilizing tutoring services, study groups, and campus resources that provide accommodations for students with learning differences. For my anxiety, I have learned the importance of self-care and mindfulness practices. Regular exercise, deep breathing techniques, and journaling help me manage stress and maintain a positive mindset. I also practice setting boundaries by balancing my academic workload with personal time, ensuring that I do not push myself to the point of burnout. Seeking professional counseling has also been instrumental in helping me navigate my emotions and develop coping strategies for moments of high stress. Beyond personal strategies, advocating for my mental health has become a priority for me. I have learned to communicate openly with professors about my challenges, request accommodations when needed, and seek support from my peers. By embracing my ADHD and anxiety rather than viewing them as limitations, I have developed resilience, self-awareness, and a determination to succeed despite the obstacles I face. Receiving this scholarship would provide me with the financial stability to focus more on my education and mental well-being. It would allow me to continue developing strategies for academic success while also advocating for mental health awareness among students. My experiences have taught me that mental health is just as important as academic performance, and I am committed to promoting a culture where students feel empowered to seek help, prioritize self-care, and achieve their goals without sacrificing their well-being. Ultimately, my journey has been one of growth, perseverance, and self-discovery. ADHD and anxiety may present challenges, but they have also shaped me into a stronger, more determined individual. By prioritizing my mental health, I have learned to navigate the demands of college while staying true to my goals. I chose nursing because it is a profession that allows me to directly improve the well-being of others. My interest in healthcare grew as I witnessed the dedication of medical professionals who provided care and support to patients facing physical and emotional challenges. Seeing how they not only treated illnesses but also uplifted their patients reinforced my belief that healthcare is more than just a career—it is a calling. Nurses play a critical role in patient advocacy, education, and holistic care, and I am excited to become part of this noble profession. My experience in the medical field has solidified my commitment to this path. I, Sharon Cortez, have obtained certifications in phlebotomy, EKG, and medical assisting, which have given me valuable clinical skills and exposure to patient care. Additionally, my volunteer work in healthcare settings has allowed me to see firsthand the disparities in medical access, particularly among underserved populations. This has driven me to seek ways to make healthcare more inclusive and accessible, whether through mobile health services, community outreach, or patient education initiatives. Pursuing a career in nursing is both a personal and professional mission for me. I am particularly passionate about ensuring that patients receive care that respects their dignity and individual needs. Addressing Healthcare Inequality Through Mobile Health Services One of the most pressing social issues today is healthcare inequality. Many individuals, particularly those in low-income and underserved communities, lack access to basic medical care due to financial, geographic, and systemic barriers. As someone pursuing a career in the healthcare field, I am deeply committed to addressing this issue by advocating for and providing mobile health services that bring essential care directly to those who need it most. Healthcare should not be a privilege reserved for those who can afford it—it is a fundamental human right. However, many people struggle to receive necessary medical attention due to transportation issues, lack of insurance, or the inability to take time off work. To combat this, I have dedicated my efforts to making healthcare more accessible by supporting mobile medical services that offer phlebotomy, EKG testing, and other diagnostic procedures outside of traditional clinical settings. Through my training and certifications, I have gained hands-on experience in patient care, and I am actively working to expand my reach to populations that often fall through the cracks of the healthcare system. In addition to direct patient care, I advocate for healthcare equity by educating communities about preventive care and available medical resources. Many individuals avoid seeking medical help simply because they are unaware of affordable options or fear overwhelming medical bills. By volunteering with organizations that provide health education and screenings, I work to bridge this knowledge gap, empowering individuals to take control of their health before minor issues become serious conditions. Beyond my current efforts, I plan to continue addressing healthcare inequality by expanding mobile health services and advocating for policies that prioritize accessible healthcare for all. My long-term goal is to establish a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free or low-cost medical services to underserved communities. This initiative would not only improve health outcomes but also reduce the burden on emergency rooms, which often serve as the only healthcare option for those without access to routine medical care. Receiving the Jeannine Schroeder Women in Public Service Memorial Scholarship would allow me to further my education and expand my ability to serve these communities. With financial support, I can focus on advancing my medical training and developing the skills necessary to implement sustainable solutions for healthcare accessibility. More importantly, this scholarship would affirm my commitment to public service and my mission to create a more equitable healthcare system. Jeannine Schroeder’s legacy of advocacy and service is an inspiration, and I am honored to continue her mission of making the world a better place. Through my dedication to addressing healthcare inequality, I strive to ensure that every individual—regardless of their background—has access to the medical care they need and deserve.

Exemplifying Hunger in My Healthcare Journey Throughout my academic and clinical journey, I have consistently demonstrated a strong work ethic and an insatiable hunger for growth and excellence. One particular experience that stands out occurred during my training as a phlebotomist, where I exceeded expectations by taking initiative and going beyond my assigned responsibilities. During my clinical rotations, I was placed in a high-volume outpatient lab where patients relied on timely and accurate blood draws for critical diagnoses. While my primary role was to collect blood samples, I quickly noticed that many patients, particularly elderly individuals and those with anxiety about needles, required additional reassurance and care. Instead of simply focusing on the technical aspects of drawing blood, I took the extra step to engage with each patient, explain the procedure in a calming manner, and ensure they felt comfortable. One day, an elderly patient with a history of fainting during blood draws arrived visibly anxious. The lead phlebotomist was busy, and other staff members were rushing through their tasks. Recognizing the need for extra attention, I took it upon myself to guide the patient through deep-breathing exercises, adjusted the chair for better comfort, and continuously checked in with her throughout the procedure. Because of my patience and reassurance, she completed the blood draw without incident, later expressing her gratitude for the compassionate care she received. My hunger for learning and improvement also drove me to seek additional responsibilities beyond my assigned duties. I proactively asked my supervisors for feedback, practiced my technique during downtime, and even assisted in organizing supplies to improve workflow efficiency. This eagerness to contribute did not go unnoticed—my supervisor commended me for my initiative, and I was entrusted with training newer students on patient-centered techniques. The impact of my actions extended beyond just one patient. By fostering a more patient-centered approach, I helped create a more positive and supportive environment for both patients and staff. My willingness to take extra steps inspired my colleagues to be more attentive to patient comfort, leading to an overall improvement in patient satisfaction scores in our department. This experience reinforced my belief that being hungry for knowledge, growth, and excellence is essential in the healthcare field. My drive to exceed expectations has not only allowed me to develop strong technical skills but also shaped me into a compassionate and proactive professional. As I continue my education, I remain committed to this pillar, striving to push myself beyond limits, take initiative, and make a lasting impact in the field of healthcare.
