Olivia Rodrigo’s music resonates with so many people because of how honestly she captures change, insecurity, pressure, and growth. One lyric that deeply connects with my own experience comes from her song “making the bed” when she sings, “I got the things I wanted, it’s just not what I imagined.” Another lyric that reflects my journey comes from “hope ur ok,” a song centered around perseverance and finding strength despite difficult circumstances. Olivia’s music reminds listeners that growing up is complicated, and that success often comes with sacrifices people do not always see from the outside. Growing up, education was not something my family had experienced in the same way many others had. My mother is a South American immigrant, and my father grew up in a rural town in Ohio near the Indiana border. My grandfather never made it past the sixth grade. Because of this, college felt unfamiliar and distant to my family’s story. Initially, I did not even know if college was something I wanted for myself, but my parents encouraged me to pursue opportunities they never had access to. Looking back now, I realize how much strength and sacrifice it took for them to push me toward a future they could only imagine for me. During high school, I worked over 40 hours a week while attending classes full time. My days started at 6 a.m. and often did not end until around 11 p.m. I would go to school all day, leave directly for work, and come home exhausted before repeating the same routine again the next morning. At the time, it felt isolating watching other students experience a more traditional high school life while I focused on responsibility and survival. Olivia Rodrigo’s music captures that feeling of carrying pressure while still trying to figure yourself out. Her songs acknowledge that growing up is not glamorous, sometimes it means sacrificing comfort in order to build stability. Once I got to college, my work ethic never changed. I worked every break possible and took on multiple campus jobs to help support myself financially while also gaining professional experience. I was determined to graduate debt free, and through years of hard work, I accomplished that goal without taking out a single student loan. Balancing academics, leadership roles, campus jobs, and personal responsibilities was incredibly difficult at times, but those experiences shaped me into someone resilient and adaptable. What makes Olivia Rodrigo’s music meaningful to me is her vulnerability. She does not pretend growth is easy. Her songs reflect insecurity, exhaustion, and self discovery in ways that feel deeply human. I relate to that honesty because my own journey has been built on learning how to navigate uncertainty while continuing to move forward. Despite the challenges, I have used my experiences to create something meaningful. During my time at Juniata College, I became a published illustrator for a children’s book, worked with nonprofit organizations like the Jana Marie Foundation to support mental health initiatives, and collaborated with the Raystown Visitor Center to create an augmented reality sandbox as an educational tool. These opportunities showed me how creativity and leadership can positively impact communities. As I continue my education by pursuing a master’s degree in Organizational Leadership at Juniata College, I hope to keep using my skills to help others and leave every community better than I found it. Education has always represented more to me than earning a degree. To me, college is an opportunity to grow into someone capable of creating meaningful change within the communities around them. As a recent graduate of Juniata College on May 16, 2026, I have spent my college career not only developing professionally and creatively, but also finding ways to use my skills to positively impact others. I deserve this scholarship because I have consistently dedicated myself to leaving every space and every community better than I found it. What gives me an advantage over other applicants is my ability to combine creativity, leadership, and compassion into tangible work that serves others. Throughout my academic journey, I have pursued opportunities that allowed me to make a real difference beyond the classroom. One of my proudest accomplishments was becoming a published illustrator for a children’s book through work with an independent client. This experience pushed me creatively while teaching me the importance of storytelling, communication, and creating work that can inspire and connect with people of all ages. Seeing my artwork published reinforced my passion for using creativity as a tool to educate, encourage, and uplift others. In addition to my creative work, I have dedicated much of my time to nonprofit and community centered initiatives. I collaborated with the Jana Marie Foundation, an organization focused on mental health awareness and suicide prevention, through a community design lab course. This work allowed me to contribute design solutions that supported conversations around mental health and helped further the organization’s mission to create safer and more supportive communities. Mental health advocacy is something deeply important to me because I believe everyone deserves to feel seen, supported, and valued. I also worked with the Raystown Visitor Center to help create an augmented reality sandbox used as an educational tool. This project combined technology, creativity, and hands on learning to engage community members in an interactive experience. Being able to contribute to something educational and accessible showed me how innovation can be used to strengthen community spaces and create memorable learning opportunities for others. Throughout college, I intentionally sought opportunities where my work could benefit more than just myself. Whether through design, leadership, technology, or advocacy, my goal has always been to contribute positively to the environments I enter. I believe that success is not only measured by personal achievements, but by the impact you leave on the people and communities around you. As I look toward the future, I hope to continue my education at Juniata College by pursuing a master’s degree in Organizational Leadership. My goal is to continue working with nonprofit organizations and community focused initiatives where I can help create supportive, innovative, and meaningful spaces for others. I want to build a career centered around leadership with purpose, leadership that uplifts people, strengthens organizations, and creates lasting positive change. Receiving this scholarship would help me continue pursuing those goals without the overwhelming financial burden that often limits educational opportunities. More importantly, it would be an investment in someone who is committed to using their education, creativity, and leadership to give back to others. I may not have the same story as every applicant, but what sets me apart is my commitment to meaningful impact. I have already spent years using my talents to support nonprofits, educate communities, advocate for mental health awareness, and create work that reaches beyond myself. I will continue carrying that same dedication into graduate school, my career, and every community I become a part of.

My father is the most important father figure in my life. He has always been someone I admire deeply, not because of his circumstances, but because of his strength, determination, and the values he has instilled in me. Even though he is now blind and unable to work, he continues to inspire me every day through his resilience and unwavering support. Growing up, my dad always emphasized the importance of hard work. He taught me that success is earned through dedication, persistence, and a willingness to always try your best. Whether I was facing challenges in school, extracurricular activities, or my personal life, he reminded me that effort matters more than perfection. Those lessons have become the foundation of who I am and have guided every major decision I have made. His influence is especially evident in my academic journey. As an undergraduate studying a combination of Computer Science, Information Technology, and Integrated Media Arts, I have learned to embrace both creativity and technical problem-solving. These fields require discipline, adaptability, and a strong work ethic; qualities my father instilled in me long before I entered college. Computer Science has strengthened my analytical thinking, while Information Technology has taught me how technology can solve real-world problems and connect people. Together, these disciplines have prepared me to approach challenges with both logic and innovation. My father's resilience has also inspired my long-term goals. Watching him navigate life after losing his sight has shown me the true meaning of leadership. Leadership is not about holding a title; it is about perseverance, empathy, and the ability to inspire others, even during difficult circumstances. Because of his example, I am passionate about continuing my education by pursuing a master's degree in Organizational Leadership. I want to use my technical background and leadership skills to help organizations grow, foster collaboration, and create meaningful change. What makes my dad truly special is the way he has handled adversity. Losing his sight and his ability to work would be overwhelming for anyone, yet he has faced these challenges with remarkable courage and dignity. He has taught me that a person's value is not defined by their circumstances, but by their character and determination. His strength has motivated me to remain resilient in my own life, no matter what obstacles I encounter. My father has always believed in me, even during moments when I doubted myself. His unwavering support has given me the confidence to pursue ambitious goals and strive for excellence. Every accomplishment I achieve reflects the lessons he has taught me. I am incredibly grateful to have my dad as my father figure. His work ethic, resilience, and unconditional love have shaped my character and my aspirations. As I continue my journey in technology and eventually into organizational leadership, I carry his lessons with me every step of the way. His example reminds me that true success comes from perseverance, integrity, and always giving your best.

I became interested in pursuing a computer science related degree through a combination of creativity, problem solving, and real world application. I have always been drawn to how technology can be used to communicate ideas, solve problems, and build experiences that connect people. As I explored different academic paths, I realized I didn’t just want to learn how systems work, I wanted to use them in meaningful, creative ways. This led me to Interactive Media Design, where I could combine computer science, information technology, and media arts into one interdisciplinary field. My interest deepened as I began applying my skills outside the classroom. Through my work with the Jana Marie Foundation, I helped design materials that promote mental health awareness and reduce stigma. I learned that technology and design are powerful tools for advocacy, capable of reaching people in ways that words alone sometimes cannot. I also collaborated with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to help develop an interactive exhibit at Raystown Lake and worked with the Tuscarora Intermediate Unit to create a mobile fabrication lab that expands access to creative technology. These experiences showed me that my skills in technology and design can have real, tangible impact in education and community engagement. After receiving my degree, my goal is to work in user experience design and nonprofit focused technology development. I want to create digital tools, campaigns, and interactive experiences that help organizations better connect with the communities they serve. Whether it is through designing accessible platforms, educational tools, or awareness campaigns, my dream is to use technology to make information more engaging, inclusive, and impactful. Long term, I hope to continue expanding my leadership role in this field by working with mission driven organizations that prioritize education, mental health, and community development. I believe I am a strong candidate for this scholarship because of my commitment to both technical growth and community impact. In addition to my academic pursuits, I hold multiple leadership positions on campus, including President of It’s On Us, Secretary and Social Media Marketer for the Juniata Activities Board, Vice President of the Alpha Beta Debug Club, and Junior Assistant in the Integrated Media Arts Department. These roles have strengthened my ability to lead, communicate, and collaborate effectively while balancing multiple responsibilities. What sets me apart is not just my interest in technology, but my dedication to using it for purpose driven work. I approach every project with the goal of creating something meaningful, whether it is a design, a campaign, or an interactive experience. I am motivated by the belief that technology should not only function well, but also serve people in ways that improve their lives. Receiving this scholarship would allow me to continue developing my skills and further my education, bringing me closer to a career where I can combine creativity, technology, and service to make a lasting impact.
