Hello, my name is Shane Crumpton, and I am a first-generation Filipino American. I am BLESSED to be called a Filipino American and to live in the land of opportunity. Being a Filipino American has deeply impacted me in a lot of ways. One of those is having a sincere appreciation for America and the opportunities that are present here that are not present in other countries. Back in 2017, I flew to the Philippines with my mother to visit her side of the family and see where she grew up. I was shocked, the living conditions were poor, and a lot of the familiy had to rely on their relatives who lived in the United States to send them money to provide for their basic needs. My relatives were living in poverty, and there was no difference between me and them other than where we lived. Seeing where my mom came from and the living conditions of my family, broke my heart and made me cry. I made a promise to myself that I will do everything in my power to seize every opportunity given to me as an American and make the most out of the gift given to me, which is calling America my home. I understood that I needed to become specialized and valuable to help take care of my family in the United States and also in the Philippines. I also understood I needed to get an education in something highly skilled and valuable so that I would never become impoverished, but be in a position to help those in poverty. Being a Filipino American has influenced my decision to become a Doctor. I thought about the things I was interested in that I would excel at that would give me a chance to do well in my career, and I found that Medicine is a perfect fit for me. Being a Filipino American has influenced me to become a physician to change the trajectory of my family, to give my children the best opportunities I can give them while also empowering myself to help meet my relative's needs in the Philippines. Aloha, My name is Shane Crumpton and I live on the island of O'ahu, Hawaii! I am a first-generation Filipino American from an immigrant family in the Philippines. I spent most of my childhood as a caregiver for my elderly father; and a good portion of my young adult life caring for an ailing grandmother. Although my upbringing was very different from my friends, I learned a lot of valuable life skills that have shaped me into who I am today. Most of what I did with my father and grandmother was helping them with their daily activities of living. With my father, it was getting him up, laying him down, cooking meals for him, physical therapy exercises, and quality time. For my grandmother, I was rehabbing her back to health post-cancer by changing her diet, exercising, and having plenty of family and community interaction. It was through these experiences that I started to notice what we do daily matters and has dramatic improvements in our health and daily cognitive function. Growing up, I was in and out of hospitals, emergency rooms, skilled nursing facilities, and outpatient clinics. When I look back, I realize in observing those healthcare settings, there was not a lot of excellent patient outcomes. These healthcare settings were good at keeping people alive but not when it came to helping a person have excellent optimal health and function. Through my experience of watching my father and grandmother I developed an intuition and interest in enhancing function and improving performance and cognition in people. After traveling the world, working different jobs, getting married, going to school and exploring varying interests, I started to see that my competency and curiosity was towards healthcare. It wasn't until I met with different physicians that I stumbled across a specialty that fit me perfectly, and its called Physiatry or PM&R (Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation). My passion lies in Neurologic Rehabilitation and Orthopedic Rehabilitation. When discussing personality tests, I am an INTJ & Type 5, which explains the constant hardware that runs in the back of my mind, always asking, "How can we improve this? How can we make it better?" I believe these are the questions and the intuition needed to handle the complex cases that these physicians see. I have always believed my career would also be my ministry, and I have always dreamed that my career would have a powerful impact on people and the world. I believe I have found my place. My pursuit and goal is to finish medical school and become an authority in the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. To bring innovation and push the boundaries of the Physiatry field. My vision is to be a pillar in my community, and to have a profound impact on the people I encounter, and be a source of wisdom, healing, and hope to all of the sick and hurting people that come under my care.
