Bio

Hello, my name is Shanaiska. I'm currently a freshman in college. I have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit hyperactivity disorder. However, I'm a very hard-working student and I don't let my ADHD define me although it did bring up some challenges academically before I was diagnosed. Growing up I always loved school, perfect attendance throughout middle school showed that. I am most passionate about continuing my medical training and becoming a healthcare provider for mothers.

Being the "first trial child" and growing up is challenging. My definition of a first trial child is a child who is the first in the family to face everything head-on without the assistance of an older figure. I had no exposure to any vocations, I had to figure out what I wanted to accomplish through my plan. Even as a child with no knowledge of what was going on around me, I saw things that moved me at a young age. My decision to change the world was inspired by this observation. I want to major in Biomedical Sciences with the ultimate objective of attending medical school or physician assistant school. I knew I wanted to work in medicine since high school, which is why I enrolled in the Health Occupations Students of America (H.O.S.A) program and became a Certified Nursing Assistant at such a young age (CNA). But as time progresses, I financially plan out my undergraduate years, and it makes me think the pathway I want to take is impossible because inflation is at an all-time high, which influences the cost of living and needs for living, which is difficult. After all, I am away for college. My parents are attempting to cover all my expenses while I am in Jacksonville while I’m unable to work due to wanting to focus on school and being diagnosed with Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD- combined) makes it extremely difficult to manage. Although I have been in therapy for a short time, my therapist has been a tremendous help in balancing academics and ADHD. After my first semester of college in the fall of 2021, I recognized I needed assistance. I had difficulty organizing my study schedule, remaining focused in lectures, remembering concepts, and prioritizing tasks. Unfortunately, I sought assistance too late, which had an impact on my GPA at the end of my freshman fall semester and resulted in academic probation going into spring semester. I had to go to therapy for a while to manage my academic life and potentially receive accommodations from my university. Despite receiving my accommodations two weeks before the semester ended, I eventually was successful. As a result, I am no longer on academic probation and am in good standing. With that said, the scholarship would be a huge financial help for my parents and my dreams of becoming a health care provider with ADHD.

As a small little girl, I always knew that I wanted to become a doctor. I saw situations as a small girl that I realize I could change if I was dedicated in become an Obstetrician for the less fortunate. In my small mind, I thought you just became a doctor. Of course, only in my small mind, does this exists, but you must attend undergrad and then do all the steps to get your match to medical school, it's a long process. In my journey right now, I just finished my first year in college, it was truly a roller coaster. I suffered academically and mentally and didn't realize it till the end of my first semester in college and didn't get accommodations till the end of the second semester. I didn't think anything was wrong, until one day I just started forgetting things said a minute before, not having good time management, not being able to transition, and procrastinating. It became difficult when I felt overwhelmed, and I couldn't juggle so many things at once. So, I got diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) combined which just means I have two different categories of ADHD, inattentive and hyperactivity-impulsivity. My therapist and I worked on coping methods, and it seemed to be helping. Unfortunately, I felt disappointed toward the end of the semester I had a flare where I was late to classes again become poor time management skills, and was unable to pay attention in class for long periods. However, after that flare I had a breakthrough, I was on time to classes most of the time I was too early, I also completed assignments given earlier than the deadline. It was a long road, but I finally reached a checkpoint and saw all the good results that I have only dreamed to experience. I changed my study habits, went to therapy once a week, and worked on tactics and strategies to manage my student life. I saw results that altered my way of viewing certain things and it made me more dedicated to seeing this process through to the end. I want to continue this path because I'm very passionate about becoming a doctor and to prove students with disability impairments can make it through, it may be a little time-consuming and takes dedication. In the end, it'll be worth the waiting, the time, and the commitment.
