Im the oldest in my family of five. I was 9 when my mom lost my baby sister due to a miscarriage, she was 2 months pregnant with her, this would have been my first sister due to having two younger brothers. This loss caused me to lose trust issues and depression, also during this time my brother Ethan was also kidnapped by our biological father which didn’t help me cope my grief over our sister. While my brother was missing for 3 months we planed a small funeral for our sister that Ethan didn’t get to know about until we got him back. I stayed strong during that time for my youngest brother Shawn who was just a toddler and has autism, back then I was suicidal and wanted to join our sister but didn’t because of Shawn and Ethan knowing they needed there older sister there in there lives. A year after our sister passed our mom got pregnant again with another girl, I was having at first but I felt like we were replacing our other sister at the time. Now I think differently Kiki is a diva and I love her dearly but there’s a part of me that still wonders what our other sister would have looked like, sounded like, and acted like? Time moves on and we’re forced to go with it. She would have been 7 years old this year but she got taken away before she even say the light. Her death made me fear about having my own kids one day and losing them to something my body could have provided or knowing there is something I can do but doing know about until it’s too late. Through out my family my grandmother lost a daughter to a miscarriage and a 2 year old to a brain tumor, my mom lost our sister due to my sisters placenta getting diseased and sick. I fear that same fate of losing a child which still scares me to this day. We still talk about our sister Harper on occasions but it’s still a touchy subject for our mom which I can understand. As we kids get older and older we ask ourselves of what it would have been like with Harper. Today my mental health is better then never before and I still hold my siblings close and protect them to the best of my abilities, there are days I miss my sister who never got that chance. In loving memory Harper

My life goal is to get my associates degree for diesel mechanics and eventually move to Tennessee. I choose this career because I love taking apart and rebuilding objects; it's like playing with Lego’s for me which I have enjoyed building since I was a kid. I choose to move to Tennessee after I graduate college due to diesel mechanics also being in high demand down there and plus the warmer weather then here in Michigan. I would like to try to be a travel mechanic and see the world through my job but I also want to have a family one day so if I have to sacrifice that part I will. My personal strengths are staying calm in stressful situations, staying organized, and communicating with others. I am in automotive CTE so there are days where we have projects that like to break or leak everywhere. I'm good at staying calm in those situations and with injuries. There are times either my friend or myself get hurt and I'm always the one to stay calm and get them or me cleaned up. I show organization by doing and turning in my school work and getting orders at work done in a timely manner thanks to being organized. I talk to my team in CTE everyday about our plan for the day and what needs to be done I was also selected to be the representative for my CTE, this means that I get to help plan field trips and meet with other CTE students and help change the fuels in our CTEs. I was also part of the national society of leadership and success, which is a country leadership program to help and teach others to be a lead. I was awarded a diploma for completing the lessons and teaching. I was also recently been awarded the chance to be part of the national society of technology which is a national society for automotive. My life hasn't always been kind to me. I started working at 14 and have worked at 2 places so far. My first job was at a trucking company where I cleaned up the shop and the office for $10 an hour. I worked there for 2 ½ years then quit finding a better job closer to home and paid better. My current job is a fry cook at a local restaurant where I make $13 an hour and I don't plan on living this job until I have to leave for college in October. I have learned time management skills and organization skills that have helped me in class with getting my work done on time and with my company. My parents were also never emotionally or physically prepared in my life leaving me to raise my three younger siblings, a little before I started high school my uncle won the lottery and bought a house in Constantine, my grandparents and I moved in and we have lived here for 6 years. This helps my career because I will work with all different groups of people in the diesel industry To become a diesel mechanic will take a lot of hard work time but im determined to reach this goal with my personal strengths, achievements, and my life experience. Thank you for your consideration and time Shalynn Poling

I have been volunteered at the harvest festival in Constantine and these skills helped me work with others students to run kids games at the festival. I deserve this scholarship because I come from a low income household, but I also have some great work qualities that make me a great candidate for this scholarship.
