Being away from my support system pushed me to become more self-reliant and focused on my goals. It also reinforced my commitment to education as the foundation for my future success. I have already earned a Bachelor’s degree in Legal Studies and am currently pursuing a second Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management. My educational path is intentional because I want to understand both the legal and healthcare systems that impact people’s lives every day. I am building the knowledge and skills needed to eventually bridge these fields in a meaningful way. Alongside my education, I work as a Correctional Officer. This role has exposed me to difficult realities and strengthened my discipline, emotional resilience, and ability to work under pressure. It has also deepened my desire to pursue a career that focuses on advocacy, fairness, and helping others navigate complex systems. My educational goals and passion for supporting African American women impacted by domestic violence and substance abuse were shaped by a personal experience I witnessed as a child. I was in the back seat of a car when my aunt’s boyfriend suddenly became violent toward her. He hit her while she was driving, pulled her hair out, and attacked her without warning. I remember her screaming for him to stop because I was in the car and crying. It was a frightening experience that I will never forget. Although I was not the person being abused, witnessing that moment had a lasting impact on me. It changed how I view relationships, safety, and how quickly someone’s behavior can shift. Even years later, I still remember how I felt in that moment, and it has influenced my caution and awareness in relationships. That experience inspired me to pursue education in both legal studies and health information management so I can better understand the systems that affect vulnerable individuals. I want to support African American women who are impacted by domestic violence and substance abuse by helping improve access to resources, protection, and support services. Ultimately, I want to become an attorney and use my education to advocate for those who may not have a voice. My goal is to help create safer outcomes, raise awareness, and contribute to breaking cycles of violence in communities that are often overlooked.
