      Julius Quentin Jackson Scholarship
A time I encountered an obstacle to an important goal was when I first came to the US in my junior year. When I first arrived to the US my English speaking skills were almost nonexistent, which made communication with my teachers and my classmates incredibly difficult. One of the first work-arounds was by becoming friends with Russian speakers, as that was an easy community I could fit into. Another way I overcame my speaking challenges was by communicating through music. My schedule was basically only music classes and through that I learned that music is a universal language that we can all speak, no matter where it's from. So, through those music classes and speaking through music, I continued to slowly learn and practice my English each and every class until I could speak it fluently. So I overcame my lack of English skills by talking in the universal language while continuing to improve my English. My mom is a single parent and she has raised me by herself all my life. My dad left while she was still pregnant with me. She makes ~12k a year and we simply cannot afford to go to pay anything for college, which is why I am applying for this scholarship, as I need it if I want to study here in the US
      American Dream Scholarship
For me, the American dream is the opportunity to dedicate myself to music in an environment that encourages growth, creativity, and excellence. My major is music performance with a focus on trumpet, and being accepted to Temple University for Fall 2026 was an incredible and life-changing moment. I know the United States offers many opportunities for musicians, especially brass players, and studying there will allow me to grow in ways that are impossible elsewhere. Being accepted made me realize that my dream can come true, but the financial challenge is significant. The scholarships I am applying for will decide my future because if I cannot find the funds, I will be forced to give up this opportunity. I hope to find support that will allow me to study at Temple and focus on my music. I first came to the United States with my mom for one year, and that experience completely changed my perspective. I played in the marching band at Okemos High School, where I learned American folk songs and dances. I was chosen to play solo on the flugelhorn after an audition, and this experience greatly increased my confidence. It gave me the belief that I could perform as a strong soloist and helped me discover more of my abilities. I even learned to play the American national anthem on the trumpet, and I still sing it here in Kazakhstan. That year taught me discipline, dedication, and gratitude, and I became deeply attached to the people I met there. I realized how much opportunity and support there are in the U.S., and how different the educational system and mentality are compared to my home country. The teachers and director of bands became like family. Even though my English was not perfect and my Kazakh accent noticeable, they were patient, kind, and encouraging. They taught me not only about music but also about perseverance, self-confidence, and teamwork. I remember my first performance as a soloist and how nervous I was; their support helped me overcome fear and perform at my best. I felt welcomed and supported in a way I had never experienced before, which gave me the courage to pursue my education in the United States despite challenges. I am incredibly grateful to my mom because without her support, I would not have had this experience. That one year gave me the courage to apply to study in the United States and follow my dream of becoming a professional trumpet player. Exposure to American schools and culture inspired me to aim higher and pursue what sometimes feels impossible. I became attached to the people there, including the students and the community, and I continue to carry their lessons and encouragement with me every day. At the same time, I know that studying at Temple University comes with a significant financial challenge. My family cannot afford the cost of tuition and living expenses, which is why I am applying for scholarships. I hope to find support that will allow me to study in the United States and take advantage of the opportunities there. For me, the American dream is about access, encouragement, and being part of a community that inspires excellence. Studying in the United States is the realization of a dream that has motivated me for years. With scholarships, I hope to honor my family’s sacrifices, dedicate myself to my music, and embrace every opportunity that studying in the U.S. offers.
