Being a first-generation college student has created more resilience and motivation for me to succeed in my career goals. Pursuing my career goal of becoming a lawyer and learning more about the behind-the-scenes of politics will allow me to inform my family, who don’t have many resources at all, and can allow them to learn from me. With my political science major, I hope to teach my family members their own rights to be able to vote, which would help many of my family members to go out and vote for what they care about, instead of not voting at all because they lack that knowledge. When potentially pursuing the field of law, I hope to better inform my community and help other first-generation students to be able to get to college without feeling alone in the process. Coming from a low-income family in the projects of a Chicago neighborhood, I think it is quite important for me to be able to give back to the community that has constantly helped to support me during my time in high school. Our neighbors would bring extra groceries and their fruits and vegetables to help my grandmother and me when we couldn't get out to the grocery store due to her health issues. Coming from a background of being raised solely by my grandmother, whose only income was social security, I learned that additional support was going to be needed for pursuing my career goals. I would love to be able to have this opportunity to be awarded this scholarship to lessen the load of the financial burden that college continues to throw at me.
