I just recently lost my grandmother to stage 4 lung cancer on August 16, 2023. My grandmother was everything to me and my two boys. She was a nurturer, a listener, and, most importantly, a protector. Seeing my grandmother go from the person that I was used to seeing daily to becoming a fragile person due to immunotherapy hurt me. I had to not only be strong for her and my boys, but I had to be strong for myself. My grandmother ended up having to be put on morphine due to her respiration and her blood pressure dropping so often. I remember the day before she passed I went to her bedside and told her that I would continue the career goal we discussed the months before her becoming sick, which was to become a Registered Nurse. The fight and the will to achieve this career goal is not only for myself and my kids but it's dedicated to my grandmother. Without her knowledge and encouraging me to get to where I am in life, I wouldn't have made it thus far. I just recently applied to an evening weekend RN nursing program with hopes and dreams that I will get accepted and be able to attend.

As a mother I feel as if my kids motivated me to continue to pursue higher education. Being the first person to go to college in my family has always been a gift for me. I have always wanted to be a nurse ever since I was a young girl. I lost my grandfather at the age of 6 years old to cancer. Watching how the nurses and doctors cared for him made me realize that healthcare was the field that I wanted to be in. I started off as a CNA working with individuals to bathe, feed and do daily ADLs with them. I learned that you also build a little friendship with them you learn about them and you hear the story of their life. So many wonderful and fascinating stories I have heard. I then decided that I wanted to take the next step and pursue my LPN licensure. I started LPN during COVID, it was a bumpy road for me but I still succeed and came out on top. I was pregnant and my pregnancy turned into a high risk pregnancy (pre-eclampsia) to where I had to be admitted to stay in the hospital until I delivered. My school was trying to tell me to just take time off and to come back after I deliver the baby, but I was so driven to get my degree and prove to not only myself but others that I had what it took to become a nurse. I ended up staying enrolled in the school , attending zoom lectures and completing assignments all from a hospital bed. My son decided to come 9 weeks early. He was born premature on Nov 1,2020 @ 31 weeks and 4 days . He had to stay in the Nicu for 40 days, it felt like forever. I would go sit by his incubator with him for hours , going over my school work and talking to him about how much nursing would help change our lives once I completed my degree. While at the NICU, I met wonderful nurses that helped my son and gave me so much information as well as teachings. When my son finally was discharged from the NICU it gave me a better idea, I had wanted to become an RN-BSN so that I could work alongside neonatal infants and help them, the way my son was helped. I ended up going to community college to finish off all required classes so that I could petition for the nursing program. In between classes, my now 2 year old has an expressive language disorder so he does speech and occupational therapy two days a week. He and my 13 yr old are my biggest motivation towards any and everything. My 2 yr old has been growing, learning and overcoming so many obstacles that they say premature infants have. Both my kids keep me driven towards my goals and every-time I look at them, I know I have to keep pushing forward. I was just accepted into an RN school that start spring 2024. I am beyond excited as well as blessed because not a lot of people get the opportunity to fulfill their dream. I am just glad that I am one of them.

Once I am able to become a Registered Nurse, the field that I would like to go into is the NICU ( Neonatal Intensive Care Unit). I have two sons who were both born prematurely at 31 weeks. I have a very high respect for those nurses in that field because they take care of all types of sick infant. I would like that to be my long term career. Helping babies just like my sons were helped. My journey to becoming a Registered Nurse was a little rough. I started LPN school in June of 2020, all while COVID was at an all-time high. I was pregnant while in LPN school, I ended up having to be placed on bedrest due to me being considered a high risk pregnancy. My now 2 year old son ended up coming 9 weeks early so it set me back some. From going to the NICU 24/7 to completing assignment’s and being at clinicals it was hard. I always have and have had the mindset that you can do anything that you put your mind to, you are the only person that can stop your dreams or desires from happening. I buckled down, I made a plan for everything well ahead of time, study time , NICU time, etc. I ended up graduating at the top of my class out of 52 students. My GPA was a 3.38. I started working for a per diem agency called “ Connect RN “, I was able to work the days, times and shifts that were convenient for me. I met a handful of nurses along the way that always encouraged me to continue going further and to not stop at just being an LPN. So now here I am continuing my lifelong dream to become a RN BSN. Hi my name is Sequista Wilson. I am a single mother of two boys - 2 yr old and 12 yr old. My passion is for me to become a Registered Nurse. I have been a CNA since the year of 2014. I then went to LPN school in 2020. Upon graduating LPN school my grandmother was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. I started working for a per diem agency called “ Connect RN “, I was able to work the days, times and shifts that were convenient for me. I met a handful of nurses along the way that always encouraged me to continue going further and to not stop at just being an LPN. So now here I am continuing my lifelong dream to become a RN BSN. My passion for becoming a Registered Nurse started at a young age. I was 6 years old when I lost my grandfather to lung cancer. Being at the hospital with him while he received his treatments and watching how the different nurses and doctors took care of him led me into my career path. When he was home I would dress up and have my stethoscope and act out everything that I saw the nurses do prior to receiving his treatment. Before my grandfather passed away he would call me his “Nurse Wilson”. I was so excited just to hear nurse in front of my name. Sadly, I wasn’t able to be the nurse to my grandfather before he passed away in 1997. From that day forward I would sit with my aunt and listen to her read from her medical books and I would be her patient when she needed to go over things. My enthusiasm for nursing never left even at the age that I am now. reason that I want to become a nurse is because I have held onto this dream for over 20 years. I started off with being a CNA (certified nursing assistant) , then I became an LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse). So as you can see I have the drive and willingness in order to have my career dreams met. Once I am able to become a Registered Nurse, the field that I would like to go into is the NICU ( Neonatal Intensive Care Unit). I have two sons who were both born prematurely at 31 weeks. I have a very high respect for those nurses in that field because they take care of all types of sick infant. I would like that to be my long term career. Helping babies just like my sons were helped. My journey to becoming a Registered Nurse was a little rough. I started LPN school in June of 2020, all while COVID was at an all-time high. I was pregnant while in LPN school, I ended up having to be placed on bedrest due to me being considered a high risk pregnancy. My now 2 year old son ended up coming 9 weeks early so it set me back some. From going to the NICU 24/7 to completing assignment’s and being at clinicals it was hard. I always have and have had the mindset that you can do anything that you put your mind to, you are the only person that can stop your dreams or desires from happening. I buckled down, I made a plan for everything well ahead of time, study time , NICU time, etc. I ended up graduating at the top of my class out of 52 students. My GPA was a 3.38.
