My Plan of Contribution to My Community Growing up, the idea of a community to me was foreign. Being a military child, I was never in one place for a long time with the same surroundings and people. Moving to Fernley in the middle of 8th grade was completely different than what I was used to, yet it ended up being the best and most pivotal thing for me. In January of 2020, my dad was stationed in San Francisco to do recruiting for the Army. My parents were concerned with the cost of living and schools in California which landed us in Fernley because of family in the area. Once I got to Fernley, It took me a while to understand what this town means, which was made challenging because of COVID-19. As things began to go back to normal after that first year, I slowly began getting more involved in order to make more friends. I joined leadership, upward bound, and started a small community club. With leadership, I got to see and experience all the support that Fernley gives. Leadership also taught me how important and impactful it is to give back. The homecoming heroes we were able to raise money for always made me proud of all the hard work and time we put into the events. After being in leadership for two years, I was able to run for a state leadership position that had never been given to a Fernley student before. In November of 2023, leadership hosted a large conference with students from all over the region. We were able to get our food and shirts completely covered through donations within our community. The community is something that I didn’t know could exist in my life, a community that stays. Growing up in this community has taught me that If you are in a position of influence, it's important to help others. After finishing my education, I hope to be in a position to bring a psychology class to our enrichment classes at the high school and provide a leadership scholarship each year. I feel that Psychology and developmental studies are in-demand classes among high school students because of the conveying materials. A leadership-based scholarship would be amazing to bring because leadership is a lot of hard work and dedication. Contributing these things to the community I feel will open up experiences and opportunities for things we don’t have yet. After everything my community has done for me, contributing to it is the plan.
