"Those who are with us are more than those against us!" These words kept reverberating through my thoughts as I prepared for church that Sabbath morning. Not only was I an emotional wreck because I had just lost my only brother and role model a few short months earlier, but I was also a nervous wreck because this was going to be my first sermon since suffering that horrendous and traumatic loss. I had spent the entire week preparing and rehearsing, but what would have normally been a routine presentation for me, being a youth preacher at my church, was now turning into a bit of an emotional challenge. Being the younger child of immigrant parents who were both educators, I grew up with a background in public speaking. My involvement in church activities from a very tender age also exposed me to repeated opportunities to hone this skill. It is worth mentioning that growing up in an immigrant household while attending a private high school in an affluent neighborhood has placed me in a situation in which I had to learn from early how to harness to advantages of both cultures while balancing their impact on my emotional, social, and intellectual development. Of importance also, is my participation in the Pathfinders Club and the Drum Corp of the church. We spend a significant amount of time running soup kitchens, operating public baths, and visiting nursing homes. Our Drum Corp also perform at civic functions and other important events in the community. These activities help me to understand that a life of service is a life well spent. My chosen career path is software engineering. I was first introduced to coding several years ago by my older brother before his unfortunate and untimely death. Since then, I have developed an acute interest in programming and, coupled with my love for video games, decided to pursue a career in this field. It is my desire to develop educational video games that will help to create a fun-filled learning environment for kids who sometimes lack the resources for quality education. I wish to honor the memory of my brother by fulfilling the dream he had for me when he first exposed me to the world of coding so many years ago. In that regard, at the end of my studies, I also wish to help set up training camps for coding in my community, where young children can be exposed to the world of programming similar to the way I got my start. All of these thoughts were going through my mind as I prepared for church that Sabbath morning. I knew that the forces of evil were actively trying to distract me from what I had to do. I also knew that there were greater forces standing guard over me. And so, with my knees trembling, my stomach doing flip-flops, and my voice quivering, I stood up and delivered a tear-filled sermon the best way I could. At the end, my parents were hugging me and crying, my friends were there holding on to me as well, the congregation was standing and applauding, and my emotions were all over the place. I know my brother would have been proud of me, and I was missing him so much, that I just had hold my head and cry. Amidst all the emotions on display, I was relieved that my mission was finally accomplished, and I will never forget those words that gave me strength that day: "Those who are with us are more than those against us".

These activities help me to understand that a life lived selflessly in service to others is a life well spent. On one particular occasion, my team members and I went to visit a nursing home. After spending some time playing board games with some residents, and just sitting and talking and worshipping with others, we were ready to leave. Then one elderly gentleman started crying. He said he had three children, but they do not come to visit him. He doesn't get any visitors, and sometimes he gets very lonely. He appreciated us just chatting with him so much that he wished we didn't have to leave. This experience reminded me that sometimes the things that we take for granted can be extremely meaningful to others. My Journey Continues The starkness of my reality as a member of a low income household was lost on me as a young kid going to elementary school. I did not understand concepts such as low income and such considerations did not even enter my thoughts. However, I gradually came to that realization upon entering middle school in a different school setting, and starting to take notice of differences with some of my classmates. My parents have always been emphasizing the need to be focused on what my goals are, and not to be distracted by what others are focusing on. As such, when I started middle school at a private school in an upscale neighborhood, and began to notice that some of my peers were obviously from more affluent families, I was already mentally prepared to deal with the challenges that resulted. I was able to avoid feeling intimidated or humiliated by the opulence around me, and instead, use it to strengthen my resolve to excel. My dream is to become a software engineer, with the hope that I can return to my neighborhood and set up programs that will help to expose young kids to the world of STEM, and give them a headstart in a related field of study. To this end, I am currently enrolled to start college this fall in the software engineering program at Drexel University.

A Tragic Loss, My Stem Inspiration I was numb...lost...a total emotional wreck! I was confused, angry, and disappointed. I felt betrayed, guilty, helpless, tormented, and empty inside. I had just watched my only brother died, and a part of me died with him that day. We prayed. We hoped. We cried. But nothing worked. He was more than just my brother; he was also my hero, my mentor, and my best friend. Being a civil engineer, my brother's dream was for me to join him in STEM. To this end, he had arranged, several years ago, for a tutor to teach me coding, and thus began my journey into technology. However, losing him almost broke me, and at first, I struggled to find the strength to go on. It took effort from my family and my friends and my brother's friends, to pull me back from the edge of the darkness that was threatening to envelop me. Today, I use my brother's memory as my ultimate motivation to pursue my career in STEM. My desire is to build a successful STEM career in my brother's honor. Unlike his civil engineering career, however, I want to specialize in software engineering because not only have I always loved playing video games, but I was also curious about how they work. I also have some ideas about how they can be improved, and being software engineer will give me the opportunity to both play and create these games. In the future, I want to help uplift others by mentoring youth from underrepresented backgrounds. Early exposure to STEM changed my life. I want to help set up programs that will give young students the same technical opportunities my brother once provided to me, and thereby, continue to honor his memory.

      Emerging Leaders in STEM Scholarship
My Brother, My Inspiration STEM has the power to transform lives, and it is in this regard that I endeavor to pursue a career in this field, particularly in software engineering. For me, software engineering is more than just writing code; it is a way to change the world. My journey into software engineering began when I was much younger. My older brother—my mentor, my hero, and my best friend—recognized my curiosity for technology. He saw a future in coding for me and engaged the services of a tutor to teach me. Under his guidance, I took my first steps into the world of programming. He encouraged me to be creative, think logically, and believe in my abilities. My dream is to build video games that act as educational tools for young people, turning screen time into meaningful learning. Tragically, my brother passed away one year ago. Losing him was the greatest adversity I have ever faced. Overnight, I lost my biggest supporter and the person who had sparked my passion for technology. The grieving process has been incredibly difficult, and there are days when the pain still feels overwhelming. However, I refuse to let his dream for me fade. I am driven to continue in STEM by his memory, and I am determined to excel by working hard every day to become the software engineer he always knew I could be. Today, my core interest in software engineering is rooted in both my love for coding and my desire to make a difference. I want to have a positive impact on the gaming industry. Video games are often seen as just a form of entertainment, but they can be so much more. I hope to design games that serve as educational tools, making learning fun and accessible for young people. By building interactive, educational games, I want to teach children subjects like science, math, and problem-solving in a way that keeps them engaged and eager to learn. Overcoming the profound loss of my brother has taught me how to be strong, resilient, and focused. I carry his lessons with me, using the coding foundation he helped me build as a steppingstone toward my future. Every line of code I write is a tribute to him. I want to build a successful career in video game development, knowing it is exactly what he would want me to do. Ultimately, my goal is to blend my technical skills with a deep desire to help the next generation. Software engineering gives me the tools to bring educational worlds to life. By honoring the memory of my brother through my hard work and dedication, I aim to create video games that not only entertain but also educate and inspire young minds.

My Brother, My Mentor, My Inspiration My identity, values, and ambitions have been deeply shaped by a commitment to community leadership and a profound personal loss. Growing up, service and mentorship became the pillars of my character. As a student council member, I actively plan and implement activities like prom, fundraisers, and appreciation functions to enhance our school's learning environment. These experiences taught me how to manage projects and unite diverse groups for a common cause. My leadership extends to my faith community, where I serve as a church youth leader and captain of the Dolphins Pathfinder Club Drum Corps. Through this club, we make frequent visits to local nursing homes to engage residents in games, prayer, and conversation. These moments instilled in me a core value of empathy and showed me the profound impact of using one's time to uplift vulnerable populations. While leadership taught me how to serve, my older brother gave me my purpose. He sadly passed away a year ago, but his impact on my life remains absolute. When I was much younger, he sparked my passion for technology by arranging for one of his university batch mates to tutor me in coding. His belief in my potential transformed my relationship with technology. Losing him was the greatest challenge I have ever faced, but it also solidified my determination to honor his memory. My drive to study computer science is fueled by the desire to fulfill the future he envisioned for me, turning my grief into a powerful motivation to excel. Driven by this legacy, I want to specialize in software engineering, specifically within the gaming industry. I have always been fascinated by video games, but I rarely play them passively. Instead, I constantly analyze their mechanics and brainstorm ways the gameplay, interfaces, or systems could be improved. Pursuing a degree in computer science is the critical bridge that will help me achieve this goal. The program will provide me with the advanced technical training, algorithmic knowledge, and system architecture skills needed to transition from a player to a developer. Beyond my professional goals, I plan to use my education to create a lasting impact and uplift others. The gaming industry has immense power to build communities and foster connection. I intend to use my software engineering skills to develop accessible, inclusive games that bring people together, mirroring the community spirit I cultivated in the Pathfinder Club. Furthermore, I plan to use my platform to mentor youth from underrepresented backgrounds, establishing coding workshops and fundraisers to give them the same early technical opportunities my brother gave me. By merging my technical expertise with my deeply ingrained values of service and leadership, I will ensure my career not only advances the tech industry but actively contributes to the betterment of my community

Empathy in Action Leadership through service is not about holding a title; it is about taking active responsibility for the well-being of others, what I call empathy in action. My understanding of this principle has been profoundly shaped by my roles as a student council member, a church youth leader, and captain of the Dolphins Pathfinder Club Drum Corps. Through these organizations, I have learned that true leaders empower their communities by giving their time, compassion, and organizational skills. In my school community, I serve on the student council body. Here, we act as a bridge between the student body and the administration, taking responsibility to plan and implement activities geared towards student development and the general learning environment. While a large-scale project often requires months of behind-the-scenes work, I recently took the initiative to organize and coordinate our annual staff and parents’ appreciation banquet. Recognizing the invaluable support our teachers and families provide, I led the planning committee in executing the event. From designing the invitations and coordinating the catering to managing the setup, my goal was to ensure our community felt recognized and valued. In addition to appreciation functions, our council is consistently working to improve the school culture by planning school winter formals and Prom, and by running fundraisers to support student programs. Leading these events requires effective communication, delegation, and an unwavering commitment to making our campus a welcoming place for everyone. Beyond the classroom, I am deeply involved in community outreach through my faith-based commitments. I serve as a youth leader at my church and as the captain of the Dolphins Pathfinder Club Drum Corps. As a drum corps, our primary focus is bringing people together. We perform at various civic and public service events, using our music and marching to uplift local gatherings and foster civic pride. However, our giving extends far beyond musical performances. As a member of the Pathfinder Club, I frequently participate in organized visits to nursing homes in the community. These visits are a core aspect of our club's commitment to our neighbors, where we actively engage the elderly residents in games, lead prayer sessions, and sit down for casual conversation. Additionally, I participate in weekly soup kitchen events at church where hot meals are served to members of the community who are in need. This has been one of my most grounding experiences. Leading in this capacity means approaching each individual with dignity, rolling up my sleeves to serve food, and creating a warm, respectful environment for everyone who walks through the doors. These experiences have solidified my belief that the most effective leadership is grounded in service. Organizing a school event, playing the drums for a public parade, or serving a hot meal all demand the exact same core qualities: empathy, organization, and a willingness to put the needs of others before personal convenience. Leadership through service is transformative; it not only actively improves the physical and emotional well-being of the community, but it also cultivates a spirit of selflessness and gratitude within the leader. By dedicating my time to these varied initiatives, I have learned that the best way to lead a community is to serve it wholeheartedly.

A Tragic Loss...My Inspiration My older brother and only sibling passed away a year ago and losing him almost broke me. From the moment I first looked upon him he had become my hero. Eventually, he became not only my mentor, but also the absolute cornerstone of our family. He was the one who first ignited my passion for technology, arranging for one of his university batch mates to tutor me in coding when I was much younger. Being a brilliant civil engineer himself, he showed me that creative ideas could become reality. Inspired by him and my love for gaming, I now want to specialize in software engineering to design and improve video games, rather than just playing them. At first, I was so distraught that I did not know how to move on, but eventually, with the help of my family and friends, I mustered enough strength to push forward, determined to honor my brother's legacy. This ambition drives my educational journey. Beyond academics, leadership and community service keep me grounded and focused. As an active student council member, I plan proms, fundraisers, and appreciation functions to enhance our school's learning environment. At church, I serve proudly as a youth leader and captain of the Dolphins Pathfinder Club Drum Corps. We frequently visit local nursing homes to engage residents through games, prayers, and casual conversation, bringing joy to their days Watching my parents struggle emotionally with my brother’s death, and subsequently financially to afford my higher education, has been incredibly difficult. This scholarship would alleviate that immense stress from their shoulders. It would allow me to fully focus on my computer science studies, helping me turn my grief into a meaningful career. It is more than just financial aid; it is a critical investment that will help me take the next step in my life and keep my brother's inspiring spirit alive.

Empathy, Leadership, Resilience...Upward! Students from underserved backgrounds truly deserve opportunities because circumstances do not define potential. What truly defines potential is the resilience to rise above challenges and the willingness to remain committed to achieving goals. Despite limited resources, I have worked tirelessly to overcome obstacles through dedication, servant leadership, and a steadfast commitment to both my community and my academic future. Growing up, my mother instilled in me the values of profound empathy and compassion. Long before I could understand the concept of charity, I watched her selflessly spend her time clipping coupons to purchase non-perishable goods and merchandise. She would carefully package and ship these items to those in need abroad, despite our own financial struggles. Her example taught me that service is not bound by financial wealth, but by a generous heart and a resourceful mind. I have carried this spirit of giving into my own life by becoming actively involved in servant leadership. At my school, I proudly serve on the student council, where my peers and I plan and implement activities designed to elevate student development and enhance the general learning environment. Whether we are organizing the Prom, coordinating fundraisers, or hosting staff and parent appreciation functions, I am driven by a desire to uplift those around me. Outside of the classroom, I take on similar responsibilities as a youth leader at my church and as the captain of the Dolphins Pathfinder Club Drum Corps. Through the Pathfinder Club, I make frequent visits to local nursing homes, spending quality time engaging residents in games, prayer sessions, and casual conversation. These experiences have taught me the profound value of listening, connection, and empathy. My inspiration to pursue a degree in computer science comes from my older brother, who tragically passed away a year ago. When I was much younger, he sparked my interest in technology by arranging for one of his batch mates to tutor me in coding. Through those early lessons, I discovered a fascinating world of endless possibilities. I now want to specialize in software engineering because I have always been passionate about gaming, and I often find myself envisioning ways to improve existing mechanics and narratives. Becoming a software engineer will finally give me the opportunity to not just play the games, which shaped my childhood, but to develop and create them for a wider audience. This scholarship would be a crucial steppingstone in helping me achieve these goals. Pursuing a degree in computer science requires immense focus and dedication. Receiving this financial support would remove significant economic barriers, allowing me to fully dedicate my energy to my rigorous coursework, coding projects, and personal growth without constant distraction. With the aid of this scholarship, I will be empowered to turn my lifelong passion for gaming into a tangible career, ultimately allowing me to innovate within the tech industry and continue giving back to the community that built me.

However, my interest extends far beyond simply playing them. I frequently find myself analyzing the mechanics and brainstorming my own ideas of how these games could be improved. Specializing in software engineering will give me the opportunity to not just play the games I love, but to actively develop and innovate them. Beyond my academic aspirations, I am deeply involved in various extracurricular activities and community projects that have shaped my character. At school, I am an active member of the student council body. In this role, my peers and I plan and implement activities geared towards student development and the general learning environment. We organize major events such as Prom and various fundraisers, alongside executing staff and parent appreciation functions. These responsibilities have taught me valuable skills in project management, organization, and teamwork—qualities that I know are essential for a successful career in software engineering. In addition to my student council duties, I am actively engaged in service and leadership within my broader community. I serve as a youth leader at my church, where I strive to guide and mentor my peers. I also act as captain of the Dolphins Pathfinder Club Drum Corps, a role that has refined my ability to lead and collaborate effectively in a group setting. As an ensemble, our dedication to the community extends beyond musical performance. We make frequent visits to local nursing homes, where we spend quality time with the residents. Through engaging them in games, organizing prayer sessions, and simply sharing casual conversations, I have learned the profound importance of empathy, active listening, and connecting with people of all ages. Ultimately, my background in collaborative leadership and community service complements my technical ambitions. The empathy and teamwork I have cultivated through the student council and the Dolphins Pathfinder Club will be invaluable when I transition into designing user-centric software. By bridging my love for gaming with a solid foundation in software engineering, I hope to create digital experiences that entertain, inspire, and bring people together. I am eager to combine my technical education with my passion for problem-solving to make a lasting impact in the technology field.

By merging my technical expertise with my deeply ingrained values of service and leadership, I will ensure my career not only advances the tech industry but actively contributes to the betterment of my community To implement my plans for the future and realize my dreams, I must first overcome my financial challenges, which, at present make my road to college extremely difficult if not impossible. The Trey Knorr Memorial Scholarship would help to make my dreams a reality.

Leading Through Empathy and Teamwork As a student leader and future software engineer, I see my positive impact on society centered around two things: building strong communities now and developing inclusive technology in the future. Current social norms place high value on community service and digital innovation. These expectations shape how I view my responsibilities to the people around me. Daily, as young people, we are encouraged by social norms to step up and give back, although sometimes the motivation may be more for selfish purposes rather than selfless service to others. In my role as a member of the student council body at my school, I exemplify positive force by helping to plan activities such as Prom, appreciation functions for staff and parents, sporting events, and fundraisers. At my church, not only do I sing on the choir and serve as a youth preacher, but I'm also captain of the Dolphins Pathfinder Club Drum Corps. In this position I am often tasked with leading my group on parades at various civic functions and public events. These roles serve to reinforce the lessons learnt in the home and at school, that to be a positive force in community, it requires active leadership and teamwork. Our society also values empathy, especially toward vulnerable groups like the elderly who are often isolated. Along with the other members of my Pathfinder Club, we regularly visit local nursing homes where we play games, pray, talk with the residents, and as a whole, just provide them with companionship. The expressions of delight and appreciation shown by some of these elderly residents, have proven shown me that small, personal interactions can make a major difference in someone's life. Looking to the future, I plan to expand my positive impact through computer science. My older brother, who sadly passed away a year ago, inspired me to pursue this field. He first got me interested by having a batch mate tutor me in coding when I was younger. I want to specialize in software engineering because I love gaming and always see ways to improve the games I play. Becoming an engineer will allow me to transition from just playing games to actually creating them. Technology is now a primary way people connect and learn. By entering this field, I can use my skills to design software that brings people together and solves real-world problems. Ultimately, I want to combine the leadership and empathy I have learned through community service with my future technical skills to leave a lasting, positive mark on the world.

My Brother, My Hero My decision to study computer science is rooted in a deeply personal journey of inspiration, loss, and a vision for the future. The spark that ignited this passion came from my older brother, who sadly passed away a year ago. He was not just a sibling, but my greatest role model and the person who opened my eyes to the world of technology. When I was much younger, my older brother, who was known to family and friends as Little-P, noticed my curiosity and took it upon himself to nurture it. Instead of just letting me play video games or browse the internet passively, he arranged for one of his university batch mates to tutor me in coding. Those early programming lessons changed everything for me. What started as an intimidating screen full of text quickly transformed into a canvas of endless possibilities. Little-P showed me that technology is not just something we consume; it is something we can create. His loss left a profound void in my life, but it also left me with a clear sense of purpose. Pursuing this degree is my way of honoring his memory and continuing the legacy of curiosity and innovation he sparked within me. As I look ahead to my academic and professional career, I intend to specialize in software engineering. This specific area of computer science appeals to me because it bridges the gap between abstract logical thinking and tangible development. For as long as I can remember, I have been deeply interested in video games, and my ultimate goal is to apply these engineering principles to the gaming industry. My relationship with gaming has always gone beyond that of an average player. Whenever I immerse myself in a virtual world, my mind naturally begins to analyze the underlying mechanics. I often find myself thinking about how specific elements could be improved, whether it is optimizing a clunky user interface, fixing balancing issues in multiplayer systems, or introducing entirely new gameplay mechanics to enhance player immersion. Becoming a software engineer will grant me the technical skill set required to transition from a passive player to an active creator. I want to build the complex architectures, refine the physics engines, and write the clean, scalable code that brings interactive worlds to life. Software engineering provides the structured methodology needed to take a massive, creative concept and systematically break it down into functional, reliable software components. Ultimately, studying computer science is the vehicle that will allow me to turn my creative ideas into reality. Every line of code I write is a step toward building the games I have always envisioned, while simultaneously fulfilling the potential my brother saw in me all those years ago. His early encouragement set me on this path, and my passion for software development will drive me to make a lasting impact on the industry.

During my senior year of high school, I had the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on my local community alongside other members of the Dolphins Pathfinders Club from my church. Together, we organized a visit to a local nursing home to spend the afternoon with the residents. Our goals were simple yet profound: to listen to their stories, play games, sing songs, pray together, and offer genuine companionship. Many of these residents rarely received visitors, and our presence brought a vibrant energy to the quiet corridors. My primary motivation for this initiative came from my mother. She has always modeled deep compassion and empathy, particularly toward elderly individuals who may not have families nearby. Watching her dedicate time to making seniors feel valued inspired me to follow in her footsteps. I wanted to extend that same warmth to the residents at the home, ensuring they knew they were not forgotten by the younger generation. Executing this visit, however, came with significant personal challenges. As a high school senior, my schedule was completely overwhelmed. I was deeply involved in student council initiatives, managing demanding senior class activities, and studying intensely for final exams. Simultaneously, I had multiple youth leadership obligations at church that required constant attention. Balancing these rigorous academic and leadership roles made finding a dedicated block of time for the nursing home visit incredibly difficult. I frequently felt pulled in every direction, worried that I was spreading myself too thin. Ultimately, pushing through that time management challenge resulted in a deeply humbling and fulfilling experience. Sitting down with the residents quickly shifted my perspective. I realized that while my school schedule felt overwhelming, the simple act of giving a few hours of my time meant the world to someone facing profound loneliness. Seeing their faces light up as we sang and shared stories taught me that community service is not about having excess time; it is about intentionally making time for what truly matters. It showed me that the smallest gestures of human connection can leave the largest footprints on someone’s heart. This experience permanently shaped my perspective on service and civic duty. In the future, even as I transition into the hectic environment of college life, I will endeavor to prioritize community engagement. I plan to actively set time aside to volunteer or make regular, structured visits to a nursing home within my new college community. By maintaining this commitment, I hope to continue my mother’s legacy of empathy and ensure that older generations remain connected, valued, and loved.

Of all the milestones I have reached in my life, the personal achievement I am most proud of is my formal investment as a Master Guide in the Dolphins Pathfinder Club at my church. This achievement was not simply a reward for showing up; it represented the culmination of years of rigorous physical, mental, and spiritual dedication. Earning the Master Guide scarf and pin required mastering outdoor survival skills, completing intense leadership courses, and demonstrating a profound commitment to youth ministry. Standing before my church congregation during the investiture ceremony, I felt a deep sense of fulfillment, realizing that the hours spent studying, drilling, and mentoring had finally borne fruit. This achievement profoundly transformed my life, primarily by unlocking greater leadership roles and shifting more important responsibilities onto my shoulders. Before my investment, my involvement in the club was mostly participatory. Afterward, the church and club leadership trusted me to take the reins. I went from merely following instructions to organizing large-scale camping trips, managing club finances, and designing comprehensive spiritual curricula for younger Pathfinders. These heightened responsibilities taught me the critical art of time management, accountability, and strategic planning. I learned that true leadership means being the first to arrive and the last to leave, ensuring that every young person under my care felt safe, supported, and inspired. Furthermore, this milestone dramatically altered how I am regarded among my peers. Becoming a Master Guide elevated me to the position of a respected youth leader within my church and local community. Peers who once saw me simply as a friend began approaching me for spiritual guidance, personal advice, and conflict resolution. This shift in dynamic was both humbling and empowering. It challenged me to carry myself with greater integrity, knowing that my actions and choices would set an example for others to follow. Navigating this new peer relationship helped me develop deep empathy and active listening skills, allowing me to bridge the gap between being an approachable friend and an authoritative mentor. Ultimately, being invested as a Master Guide in the Dolphins Pathfinder Club was a definitive turning point in my personal growth. It proved to me that I was capable of enduring demanding challenges and handling high-stakes responsibilities. The experience did more than just impart practical survival and leadership skills; it shaped my identity and solidified my passion for serving others. Today, I carry the lessons of accountability, mentorship, and resilience into every area of my life, forever grateful for the day I stepped forward to lead.
Jeanne Murphy Scholarship: Compassion in Action
Compassion in today's society is sometimes seen as a rare trait that is seldom taught anymore. However, when a child grew up under the influences of a mom and grandma like mine, compassion is not only learned but is also innate. My mother and grandmother are the two most influential women in my life, and it is by their example that deep empathy and practical unselfishness were instilled in me at a very tender age. My grandmother's lifestyle was an epitome of empathy. Despite facing great financial challenges of her own, her spirit of generosity knew no bounds. I can remember watching her every Saturday as she meticulously prepared extra meals that she could barely afford. She would then fill several containers and travel to local hospitals, distributing them to patients who lacked support or resources. This weekly selfless act of compassion taught me that giving does not require abundance; it requires only a willing heart and the recognition of another person's need. I also learned that the most meaningful acts of kindness do not necessarily come with flashing cameras or social media hype, but instead, are often performed quietly, and without expectation of reward or recognition. The lessons of compassion were further reinforced by my mother, who, as a result of financial struggles, mastered the art of shopping with coupons. Sometimes she spends several hours preparing her coupons and making her circuit of stores, purchasing clothing, blankets, and non-perishable goods. She then carefully packed most of these items and shipped them abroad to people in dire need. Through her dedication and creativity, she has shown me that there is always a way to help others, regardless of how little I may have. Using the lessons learnt from both women, I strive to exemplify compassion in my daily life through hands-on community service. Primarily, I volunteer at my church’s soup kitchen, preparing and serving hot, nutritious meals to individuals and families in our community who are experiencing food insecurity. My commitment to service is also demonstrated by my involvement with the Dolphins Pathfinder Club. Through this organization I make frequent visits to local nursing homes to spend time with elderly residents, listen to their stories, and share a laugh. Additionally, as a member of the club's drum corps, I participate in various civic events and community functions, using music to uplift others and foster a sense of pride in the community. In the future, I intend to continue exemplifying compassion in action by increasing my involvement in these areas while seeking out new avenues to serve. I want to emulate my mother by finding a way of replicating her resourcefulness in my chosen field of study, thus integrating service into my professional life, and ensuring that compassion remains the guiding principle of my journey. The two female stalwarts of my early life, Mom and Grandma, have instilled within me a legacy of service and compassion, a gift that I hope to carry and share with the world every day. This way, not only will I honor their teachings, but also inspire others to be more compassionate in their actions as well.
