Sebastian Noto Jr Frantz Barron Scholarship 1 March 2023 Throughout my life, I have faced numerous challenges and adversities, particularly when it comes to my asthma. As someone who has struggled with asthma since I was a young child, I know firsthand the limitations and struggles that come with this condition. In particular, I have found that my asthma can be especially difficult to manage during extreme weather conditions, such as when it is too cold or too hot. On many occasions, my asthma has worsened during these times, causing me to have difficulty breathing and to feel overwhelmed and frustrated. Despite these challenges, I have never let my asthma hold me back or define who I am. One of my greatest passions in life is baseball, and I have been playing for almost ten years now. While my asthma has sometimes made it difficult for me to perform at my best, I have always been determined to persevere and to never give up. There have been many times when my asthma has flared up during a game, causing me to feel short of breath and to struggle to keep up with my teammates. One particularly difficult experience that stands out in my mind is a tournament that I played in where my asthma was particularly bad. I remember having difficulty breathing for a couple of games and feeling like I couldn't catch my breath no matter how hard I tried. After the final game of the tournament, my asthma was even worse, and I ended up having to go to the hospital. For the past few years, I have had the privilege of playing on a team that I have grown to love and admire. Despite our ups and downs, this past season was particularly challenging for us. With a roster full of new players and the loss of some key teammates, we faced an uphill battle from the start. Despite our best efforts, the season did not go as we had hoped, and we struggled to find our footing on the field. However, despite the challenges we faced, I wouldn't trade a single moment of our season for anything. The trips we took for tournaments, including one to South Dakota and another to Minneapolis, were highlights for me and brought our team closer together. And while we may not have had the most successful record, I believe that we learned valuable lessons and gained important experience that will serve us well in the future. As a fan, my all-time favorite player is Ken Griffey Jr. He had a certain swag on the field that no one else could match, and he always stood out to me as someone who was truly special. Wearing my favorite number, 24, Griffey's talent and charisma on the field made him a joy to watch. Growing up, I was a fan of both the Dodgers and Yankees, but if I had to choose a favorite team, it would have to be the Dodgers. There is something about their storied history and dedicated fanbase that makes them a team that I have always admired. Also not to mention the world series they won in 2020. Personally, my favorite position on the field is pitcher. One of the hardships that I have faced so far was during my freshman year of high school, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. The sudden shift to online learning was a difficult adjustment, and it was hard to maintain focus and motivation without the structure and support of a traditional classroom setting. I was also worried about my grades freezing, which they did, as I knew that my academic performance would have a significant impact on my future prospects. Another hardship that I faced was losing a friend during my junior year of high school. Losing someone close to me was a deeply difficult and emotional experience, and at the time it was very difficult to stay focused in school with my grades and then having to practice and play games for hours right after. and it took me some time to come to terms with my loss and move forward. As I enter college, I anticipate that I will face additional challenges, such as balancing my education with my involvement in baseball and finding ways to financially support myself through school. I had to find a way to honor my friend's memory and continue to move forward, even though it felt like everything had been turned upside down. One of the things that helped me the most was talking about my feelings with others.
