From a young age, I have been fascinated by the built environment. The towering skyscrapers, intricate bridges, and expansive roadways have always captured my imagination. As I grew older, this fascination evolved into a keen interest in civil engineering. This field, which combines creativity, problem-solving, and technical knowledge, became my dream career. My journey into civil engineering has been shaped by various experiences and challenges, which have only strengthened my determination to succeed in this field. My interest in civil engineering was sparked during my childhood, largely influenced by my environment and experiences. Growing up in a family with a strong appreciation for construction and design, I was constantly exposed to discussions about infrastructure and its impact on society. My father, who worked in construction, would often take me to construction sites, explaining the intricacies of different projects. These experiences were instrumental in igniting my passion for civil engineering. As I progressed through school, my interest in civil engineering evolved. I became particularly fascinated by the role of civil engineers in shaping sustainable and resilient communities. The increasing awareness of environmental issues and the need for sustainable development further fueled my passion. I realized that civil engineering is not just about building structures; it is about creating solutions that enhance the quality of life while preserving the environment. This broader perspective has deepened my commitment to this field. Within civil engineering, several areas captivate me. One of the most exciting aspects is transportation engineering. The design and construction of transportation systems, including roads, bridges, and public transit, play a crucial role in the functioning of modern society. I am particularly interested in the development of smart transportation systems that leverage technology to improve efficiency and safety. Being a Mexican American who was born in the United States and currently resides in Rosedale, Maryland, I have encountered several challenges while attempting to further my education. These difficulties have strengthened my fortitude, tenacity, and outlook on how I might use my degree to support my community in the future. Navigating the difficulties of belonging to a minority group in an educational institution with a large white student body has been one major challenge. I was always conscious of my cultural and language differences from an early age. Although my strong Mexican ancestry comes from my family, it also helped me stand out in situations where diversity was not always welcomed or appreciated. Because of this cultural gap, I occasionally felt alone and underrepresented, which made it difficult to locate mentors and role models who could understand what I was going through. Economic limitations have also presented formidable obstacles. My parents, like many other immigrant families, put in a lot of effort to support us, frequently working numerous jobs with little guarantee of income. Even though they taught me the value of perseverance and the significance of education, I found it challenging to access resources, extracurricular activities, and college readiness programs that many of my peers took for granted due to financial constraints. It became necessary to juggle part-time jobs with academic obligations, which made my high school experience even more stressful and time-consuming. My will to excel in postsecondary education has not wavered in the face of these challenges. My family's encouragement, which emphasized the value of education as a means of achieving a brighter future, has always been a source of inspiration. My path has also been greatly aided by the support of instructors who saw my potential and provided advice and tools. These encounters have strengthened my resolve to use my education to improve my community while also igniting my desire. I want to use my degree to support Rosedale and the larger community in a number of ways in the future. First and foremost, I want to work toward breaking down the obstacles preventing low-income and minority students from realizing their full potential in education and being a champion for educational justice and access. Whether it's through community organizing, policy work, or direct service, my goal is to guarantee that every student, no matter what their circumstances, has access to the tools and assistance they need to achieve. Additionally, I hope to mentor and inspire younger students who face similar challenges, providing them with the guidance and encouragement that I found so valuable. By sharing my experiences and insights, I can help them navigate their own educational journeys with confidence and resilience. In conclusion, the challenges I have encountered while pursuing a higher education have influenced my objectives and aspirations, inspiring me to fight for opportunity and equity. I'm dedicated to using my knowledge to help and uplift my community through activism, mentoring, and community engagement so that everyone has the opportunity to succeed.

When I think back on my early years, I find that there was one question I wish more parents, teachers, and other significant adults had asked me more frequently: "How are you feeling, really?" This inquiry would have helped me deal with the difficult experiences of being bullied in elementary school because of my weight. The bullying I experienced in elementary school had a significant negative effect on my general wellbeing and sense of self-worth. Adults tended to look more at my behavior on the outside or my academic success than at my innermost thoughts and feelings. I did get support and encouragement in different forms, but I was rarely given the chance to talk honestly about my challenges and thoughts. I felt alone since no one in my immediate vicinity asked questions about my mental well-being; it was as if my inner struggle was hidden from view. I didn't realize how important emotional health was until middle school, when I started to lose weight and acquire confidence. Alongside the physical change came a renewed resilience and sense of self-worth. But if the grownups in my life had consistently and empathetically asked me how I was feeling, the journey would have been a lot less overwhelming. Asking, "How are you feeling, really?" might have created a safe space for me to share my hopes, worries, and insecurities and allowed me to connect with those who could guide and support me more deeply. My current objectives and aspirations have been greatly impacted by the lack of this question. I now have a strong understanding of the significance of mental and emotional well-being, particularly for young people. I'm dedicated to fostering spaces that normalize and promote candid, open talk about emotions. The projects I've started and the way I interact with people both reflect this devotion. For instance, I made it a point to inquire about participants' experiences and sentiments on a frequent basis, especially with the younger ones, in my community garden project. Similar to this, I made sure that participants in my church's technology education program felt seen and heard by emphasizing the value of emotional health in addition to skill development. In addition, this contemplation has influenced my goals for the future. My career goal is to work in an area where I can assist and advocate for people's mental and emotional health, especially those who are marginalized and neglected. I want to be someone who always asks, "How are you feeling, really?" and listens with empathy and understanding, whether through psychology, social work, or community organizing. By doing this, I want to help create a society where everyone, regardless of circumstances or background, feels supported and respected. In conclusion, the inquiry "How are you feeling, really?" and its absence from my upbringing have greatly influenced how important I see mental health. This insight motivates my present and future initiatives and stokes my desire to provide compassionate, encouraging environments where candid conversation about emotions is not just accepted but actively encouraged.

I was fortunate enough to volunteer at churches and be a part of the Boy Scouts as a child, which gave me a strong feeling of leadership and community service. I started a number of self-initiated projects to address the problems of neglected and marginalized individuals in my community, motivated by these formative experiences. One noteworthy initiative I oversaw was the creation of a communal garden in a neighborhood with low incomes. I intended to address the issue of many locals not having access to fresh, healthful produce while simultaneously encouraging environmental stewardship and community cohesion. I started by contacting local authorities, citizens, and possible sponsors. Their help allowed me to acquire an empty lot and collect soil, seedlings, and gardening supplies. The goal of the community garden project was to create a place where people could come together, exchange knowledge, and provide mutual support, in addition to producing agriculture. In order to teach participants about sustainable gardening techniques, such as crop rotation, pest management, and composting, I arranged workshops with local specialists. All were welcome to attend these sessions, but my main focus was on getting kids and teens interested and helping them develop good eating habits and a love of the outdoors. The garden flourished, yielding an abundance of fruits and vegetables that locals could pick for nothing. More significantly, it developed into a thriving community center that drew individuals of all ages and backgrounds and helped them feel united and driven toward a common goal. At my neighborhood church, I started an electronics education program in addition to the community garden. I saw that a large number of the congregation's members, especially the elderly and low-income families, lacked even the most basic computer skills, making it difficult for them to take advantage of crucial opportunities and services. I organized a weekly computer literacy class with the help of the church, where we covered subjects including word processing software, safe internet navigation, and email use. I recruited tech-savvy friends and local IT experts who gave their time as instructors to assist make sure the program was successful. To meet the needs of the participants, we developed simple-to-follow teaching materials and offered one-on-one tutoring. In addition to providing participants with necessary digital skills, this program gave them access to new opportunities like online job applications, reestablishing contact with distant family members, and educational materials. The need of empathy, teamwork, and persistent effort in meeting the needs of underprivileged communities was emphasized by these two programs. They showed me that initiating proactive measures to address needs through creative and inclusive means is frequently the first step toward making a significant difference. Through these programs, I was able to personally observe the enormous positive effects that community-driven initiatives can have on people's lives. These encounters have influenced the way I view leadership and service, which inspires me to keep looking for ways to change the world. I'm determined to use the knowledge and abilities I've gained to make a beneficial impact on society in the future. I'll always work to empower and elevate individuals who are frequently disregarded or underutilized
