Alas, I’ve found an essay to write! The best part, to start, it is all about me! These words are written in humor. As we all know, being a parent is a selfless commitment. Unfortunately, I could not always describe myself as selfless. I was a single young dad raising a daughter for many years. One would think I had no time to myself, but I always found a way. The worst part, as my daughter got older, she recognized the struggles I went through. My battles with addiction, finances, and relationships. Today, I am a new man, through the grace of God, my life cannot be more complete. My daughter and I share such a loving relationship, built on trust and honesty. Here is the kicker, I get to do it all over again, better this time! I have found my best friend to share the sunsets with me. We have two children together, a girl and boy. Three children in all- ages 22, 6, and 5.
So why is it that I should be so bold to highlight the failures in my life? As a parent, I do not have the luxury to throw my hands up and walk away when times get rough. I will not leave my family fatherless as my dad did many years ago. My oldest daughter may know of a few failures of her dad, but my children know their dad is not a failure. As I take on this new challenge, returning to school at the age of 47, I impart to them commitment to the family and dedication to my schoolwork. I will not fail my family. Although it’s been a struggle with finances of late, the rewards will be well earned. I will complete my program and find success in the job market. I will leave to my children a legacy, and they will know, my dad never quit on us. We will never quit on our family. I am the chain breaker.
