Bio

I grew up as a single child on a farm in Tennessee. We lived in a small log house which was more so a shack than anything else. My best friend was a cat and I'd talk to this cat all the time because there were no other children around. As I grew up I knew I wanted more in life. I grew older, I had children and became a single mother so I never finished college. I have the desire and passion for furthering my education. That's why at 59 I am returning to school.

Debra S. Jackson New Horizons Scholarship
I grew up in a small town but always felt that I needed more. I spent many years working on a farm since I was 7 years old. I remember cooking my own food, getting myself ready for school, and working on the farm by myself. While I am happy I got to experience the farm life, it was not fulfilling. I have always wanted to pursue a higher education. I never finished because I became a single mother. Now that I'm returning to school at the age of 59, I want to prove to myself that I can accomplish anything. For a non-traditional student like me with financial needs, a scholarship is an opportunity to help aid my pursuit of a degree. I know that I am able to succeed in both education and career. I am focused, determined, and passionate. If given this award it will go towards furthering my education. It will allow me to be more flexible with resources I need for school. I hope to have a positive impact on interior design and business/entrepreneurship fields. I would be living proof that you can accomplish your dreams at any stage in life. You're never too old to reach your goals. So, if given the chance to be awarded this scholarship, it would represent the resilience of those who seek to continue their aspirations later in life. I also want to be an inspiration for my grandchildren. They will see me pushing myself to be better and leaving behind a legacy of go-getters. It won't be easy, there will be many challenged along the way. However, I have been challenged my entire life. I have so much life experience and more to offer society. I sincerely believe that my expertise will have an impact. This scholarship will assist me in many ways. I will be able to purchase books, supplies, and technology that will be crucial to my success in school. Every course and professor require different things. I want to be prepared for anything that I may come across in my education. Not only would the award assist me financially, but it would also motivate me. To be recognized for my hard work will give me the confidence I need to keep going. Even just writing this essay is a teaching experience. I am able to articulate my thoughts and remind myself why I'm doing this.
