Hello! I am Scarlett Guzman, a first-generation high school graduate currently at UCLA majoring in Political Science with a Pre-Law focus. As a full-time student, I am juggling coursework alongside a part-time job to support myself. With a high 4.5 GPA, ranking in the top 5% of my class, I'm a strong contender for scholarships due to my academic achievements, leadership, and commitment to helping others. However, pursuing my degree as a low-income Hispanic student with a single parent is difficult and has made me acutely aware of the financial challenges that can hinder access to opportunities. Aiming to become a family lawyer, I intend to use my personal experience with family turmoil to make a difference in the lives of children affected by challenging custody battles. I want to help in the family courts and make a difference for children affected by decisions that are not their fault and out of their control. My goal is to advocate for children's rights, amplify their voices, and ensure their well-being during family court processes. I aspire to empower them to overcome adversity and flourish. Education is a transformative force that transcends socioeconomic limitations, and I believe that investing in individuals like me will foster a brighter future for my family and my community.   Altar Servers assist the priest in conducting mass. This is through obtaining and carrying items, ringing the bell, helping lift up gifts, etc. Together with other servers, they disseminate the word about God and encourage participation. I actively assisted the priest in administering mass, ensuring that the liturgy was conducted with utmost dignity and grace. I organized local food drives, playing a role in addressing community needs and fostering a sense of caring within the congregation. In all my actions, I aimed to promote and share God's message, striving to spread His teachings and principles among the community members. Through my efforts, I worked to create a welcoming and inclusive environment, fostering a strong sense of community and belonging among those who attended. My approach to service was marked by compassion and effective communication, serving as a role model for others in the congregation. Additionally, I extended my care to those in need by offering prayers for individuals with special requests, seeking divine intervention on their behalf.   In the midst of the COVID pandemic, the Mental Health Committee was established. Select ASB students met with the principal and school counselors to discover ways to support students struggling with mental health and promote healthy coping mechanisms. I actively contributed to my school community by implementing the MIND Program on campus and creating a new class for students. I obtained a Certificate of Mental Health Training, undergoing valuable training in listening, communication, and empathy skills under the guidance of a therapist. During the COVID pandemic, I raised awareness among struggling students and promoted therapist resources to ensure they had the support they needed. I also took the initiative to publicize these resources widely. Furthermore, I played a role in promoting Mental Illness Awareness Week by organizing spirit days that increased understanding and reduced stigma around mental health issues.
