In early November of my senior year, a split second changed everything. While playing field hockey, I tore the ACL in my right knee. A few weeks later, surgery followed, and suddenly my fast-paced, independent life slowed to a halt. I could no longer play sports, drive myself, or even walk across campus without help. What initially felt like a setback, however, became one of the most meaningful learning experiences of my life.
While tearing my ACL was never something I hoped would happen, it taught me lessons I will carry into college and beyond. I now approach challenges with greater humility, persistence, and appreciation. When progress feels slow, I remind myself that every step forward matters. I am ready to bring this mindset into my academic career, embracing challenges as opportunities to grow and contribute meaningfully to my community.

WinnerCancer has been a steady presence in my family for most of my life, and because of that, it has shaped how I view responsibility, challenges, and personal growth. My father has been living with prostate cancer for the past ten years, which means that cancer has been part of my everyday reality for as long as I can remember. Instead of being something temporary, it has been something our family has learned to manage over time. Watching my father continue to work, support our family, and stay involved in my life while dealing with ongoing treatments taught me what perseverance truly looks like. He showed me that strength is often quiet and consistent, found in showing up every day and continuing forward even when things are difficult. More recently, my grandfather was diagnosed with stage four brain cancer, and that experience has been challenging in a different way. Seeing someone I love face such a serious illness made me more aware of how quickly life can change and how important it is to value time with family and maintain strong relationships. In addition to these experiences, I have known of a young family member who passed away from leukemia at just ten years old, which helped me understand that cancer does not discriminate by age and that loss can happen unexpectedly.
While these experiences were not easy, they played an important role in helping me develop emotional strength and maturity at a young age. I learned how to stay focused on school even when things at home felt uncertain, how to support the people around me without always having answers, and how to remain steady during stressful situations. Cancer has not defined who I am, but it has influenced how I approach setbacks and challenges. It taught me to value effort, consistency, and patience, and to understand that progress does not always come from dramatic changes. Sometimes progress simply means continuing to work toward your goals, even when circumstances are difficult.
Throughout these experiences, I have also learned the importance of having a strong support system. My family, teachers, counselors, and mentors have consistently encouraged me and helped guide me during challenging times. Their support has allowed me to stay motivated and focused on my education, even when personal circumstances felt overwhelming. I am grateful to have people who believe in me and are willing to support my goals. The letters of recommendation included with my application reflect this support and speak to my work ethic, character, and commitment to my education. Knowing that others recognize my efforts and potential has strengthened my confidence and motivation to continue striving for success.
Because of my family’s experiences with cancer and the support surrounding me, I have become more empathetic, more patient, and more aware of the importance of helping others whenever possible. These lessons have influenced my goals and strengthened my desire to pursue higher education. I want to build a future that reflects the resilience I have seen in my family and the encouragement I have received from those around me. While cancer has brought challenges into my life, it has also provided perspective, maturity, and a clear sense of purpose that I will carry with me as I move forward.
