FinalistBio
My name is Savannah Escobar, and I am a proud first-generation college student from a low-income Mexican and Salvadoran family. Growing up, I witnessed my parents’ sacrifices as they worked tirelessly to provide opportunities they never had. Their resilience fuels my determination to break barriers and create a better future.
I am passionate about mental health advocacy, particularly in underserved communities where resources and support are often limited. As a future clinical therapist, I strive to break stigmas, empower individuals, and bring hope to those facing adversity. My financial struggles have taught me to budget carefully, prioritize my needs, and find creative solutions to make my education more affordable despite limited resources. However, the cost of my education continues to be a significant barrier, and this scholarship is crucial to help me stay on track and continue working toward my goals.
This scholarship would not only ease the financial burden of my education but also bring me closer to fulfilling my dream of giving back to my community and inspiring others to rise above challenges.

Leadership in Action Scholarship
The first time I encouraged a student to join the Sabor Latino Social Club, I saw how much it meant for them to find a space where they truly belonged. As a first-generation Mexican-Salvadoran student at California State University Fullerton, I understand the difficulties of navigating college without a strong support system. Financial hardship, systemic barriers, and a lack of representation make the journey even harder for students like me. That’s why I am committed to advocacy, working to create an environment where BIPOC students feel empowered, heard, and supported.
My commitment to advocacy is personal. When I first arrived at CSUF, I struggled to find my place. I didn’t have a built-in network and often felt like another face in the crowd. My first college roommate made jokes about me liking Taco Bell because I’m Mexican and assumed my pale skin came from my Salvadoran side, erasing my true heritage. She also complained after attending a club event, saying, “I’m disappointed there weren’t any fun white girls, it was mainly Mexicans and like two shy white girls.” She expressed outrage over Rachel Zegler’s casting in the Snow White musical, claiming, “It’s called Snow White for a reason,” and emphasizing how the actress was “not white enough.” Experiences like these made me feel isolated but pushed me to seek a community where I would feel valued and understood. It reinforced how vital it is to create spaces where all students regardless of background, feel valued and represented. The Sabor Latino Social Club fulfilled that wish for me.
As I attended meetings and met others who shared similar backgrounds, I realized the power of being part of a community that uplifts its members. While the club celebrates Latino culture, it is open to all students, creating a welcoming space for anyone seeking connection, cultural appreciation, and support. The impact this had on me inspired me to advocate for others to join, ensuring students who felt lost like me could find a place.
Through my involvement, I’ve helped students connect with cultural events, mentorship opportunities, and friendships that ease the challenges of higher education. Representation and belonging are essential to student success, and I take pride in fostering an inclusive environment where students from diverse backgrounds can thrive. Whether creating safe spaces for marginalized voices or mentoring fellow students, my goal has always been to uplift those who feel overlooked. By bridging gaps in resources and fostering belonging, I strive to ensure no student is left behind.
However, financial stress is a constant burden that threatens my goals. Balancing school, personal responsibilities, and financial struggles makes it difficult to focus on advocacy and education. This scholarship would provide relief, allowing me to continue uplifting my peers without the worry of making ends meet. With ambition, drive, and a passion for equity, I will keep working to create spaces where every student feels at home because I know firsthand what it’s like to struggle.
