I have been involved in my community and little kids for some time. When I was in the third grade, my mom put my twin sister, Vanessa, and I in Girls Scout. It was actually fun to serve people in my community that I had no idea lived here. We gave out cookies by the Walmart Neighborhood Market and did other things that helped in the community and other people across the globe. I felt this tingle in the chest every time I served. Maybe that was the Holy Spirit being proud of me because I wanted to please my Heavenly Father. Serving others made me warm inside and it is an amazing way to meet new people, even if you are on the more quieter and introverted side.
Throughout my sophomore and junior year, I vowed to myself with the Holy Spirit's help, "Savannah, you will serve in your church and community. They need your help." So, I started volunteering in my church by reading Scripture, leading prayer, helping the leaders with events, and working with the elementary school students in Youth Group. It has truly been a blessing to help the church leaders because they can't do this themselves. In Matthew 28:19, Jesus says to everyone to go and make disciples of all nations and baptize them of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I also picked up Brain Builders during my sophomore year of high school because I love working with kids. Was it hard? Yes, but I loved seeing the kids' happy faces. I sometimes volunteer at Shadow Cat Advocates, where we take care of cute, but energetic kittens and cats alike. My advice to you is serve in the community in some way, even if you don't feel like it. Whereas it's volunteering or helping with a cause, do it because it feels amazing when you serve others.
As I continue my education with college and medical school, the financial need is crucial for me. My family has always prioritized faith in God and education, but with limited resources and money, being able to afford college has been quite the obstacle. I have been very diligent applying for college scholarships and grants to reduce that cost, but additional support will be necessary to not only further my studies, but also give back to the community. Receiving financial aid will help me continue my studies and give back to my community in meaningful ways.
One thing that pains me to see is the growing rates of suicide among our youth because of bullying, whereas it was physical, sexual, verbal, or cyber. As someone who has experienced bullying all throughout her life for being different than what society says, it breaks my heart to see so many stories about teenagers and children killing themselves because of bullying. In my Fellowship of Christian Athletes meetings, I have talked about the problematic issues about bullying and I strive to protect anyone who is getting bullied and put a stop to bullying once and for all by the power of kindness. If everyone can be kind to at least one person today, it will start a chain reaction and we can eventually stop bullying.
In conclusion, my commitment to help my community and stop bullying is deeply rooted in my personal experiences, my faith in God, and my desire to serve in my community. With the financial aid helping me out, I can pursue further my academic goals while helping out the youth and my community. Through education and faith, I aim to create an environment where everyone can thrive.
