“Being a big sister means being a role model, a protector, and a lifelong friend.” — Shutterfly. Every older sibling has a story; here’s mine. Out of a family size of nine, I would be considered a middle child but after my oldest siblings grew into adulthood and moved on with their lives; I became the eldest in our household of now 5. After losing both of my parents to a train wreck and heart failure I had to navigate my early teenage years while still having younger siblings admired me and was influenced by my path. I did not always have everything together, I learned that being there for someone does not require having all the answers. Selflessness simply means putting someone else’s needs before your own. Being the oldest in my household meant taking on the responsibility of making sure my younger siblings were taken care of. I had to pay attention to things like how they dressed, their hygiene, getting their schoolwork done, and making sure they got to school. I had to be on top of things even when I was struggling to keep myself together. There were times when I wanted to focus on my own problems, but I knew that my siblings needed someone they could depend on. I became someone who had to lead by example, even when I was still learning how to navigate life myself. I did not choose to grow up so quickly but I chose to make sure my siblings felt supported while I was growing with them. Going into high school after losing my last living parent was especially difficult. I was struggling emotionally while also having to accept that my life looked different from many of my peers. I would watch friends bring their parents to important events, when I looked into the crowd I would see the empty seats where my parents were supposed to be. As painful as that was for me, my heart went out to my younger siblings because I knew they were experiencing the same loss. They would come home with assignments that required them to write about a family vacations , letters to mom or dad, participate in Mother’s Day or Father’s Day activities, or bring a parent to school. I knew that although it was hard for me it could be even harder for them because they did not get some of the experiences I had when I was their age. Although I am not their parent, I choose to show up. I attend their award assemblies, sports games, school events, and celebrate Mother’s Day and Father’s Day with them. I want them to know that even when certain seats are empty, they will never have to look around and feel like no one supported them. Being their big sister has taught me that selflessness is not about losing yourself for other people. It is about recognizing when someone needs you and choosing to show up. Selflessness has become an important part of who I am, not only in my personal life but also in the way I contribute to my school and community. During my junior year of high school I organized a winter drive with my school’s National Honor Society and football team to provide elementary school students with winter necessities. Additionally I serve as a Peace Circle leader; where I help create a safe space for students to express themselves. I practice selflessness by listening to others, understanding their feelings, and being present when they need someone to hear them without judgment.

Over the last few summers, one way I have spent less time on social media and more time by myself has been through reading. It took me a while to figure out what types of books I actually enjoyed, but I eventually discovered that I really like urban fiction and urban romance. I enjoy these genres because the stories and characters often feel relatable to experiences that I have either gone through myself or have seen people around me experience. One book in particular that captivated me is Heartbreak U Freshman Year by Johnni Sherri. In Heartbreak U Freshman Year, Ms. Sherri introduces four young women: Franki, Paris, Asha, and Hope. Each young woman comes from a different background and has her own values, beliefs, personality, and experiences. Franki has a deep hatred toward men because her father abandoned her. Because of this, she believes that every man who enters her life only wants something from her. Paris was raised in a wealthy and luxurious lifestyle. However, when her mother sends her to an HBCU because it was her father’s dying wish, she is forced to adjust to a completely new environment and find herself along the way. Asha is not the typical school-type girl. She will stop at nothing to get what she wants, even if it means betraying her friends or throwing them under the bus. Then there is Hope, the good girl who was raised in church by her father. She comes from a small town, but when she gets to college and meets a jock on campus, she falls hard and finds herself caught in the middle of drama. Although each girl has a different personality and background, I can relate to all of them in some way. Their experiences, struggles, and choices remind me of different parts of myself and the challenges that come with growing up and discovering who I truly am. When I first started high school, I quickly learned that dating could be complicated, especially when older boys showed interest in me. I often felt like boys were more interested in my appearance, fashion, or what I could give them rather than getting to know me as a person. If I did not give a boy what he wanted within a month or two, I would usually be dropped. Eventually, I realized that I did not have to compromise my values just to make someone stay.  I was raised on the South Side of Chicago, surrounded by an environment of violence. Although I was not raised in a lavish lifestyle like Paris, I have experienced my own struggles. I also lost my father, whose wish was for all nine of his children to go to college and become successful. During my earlier years in high school, I was not always the school-type of girl. I was an average student who was mainly focused on fitting in and finding my place. Instead, I relate most to Hope. Like Hope, I was raised in church and was sheltered from certain parts of the outside world because my family wanted to protect me from negative influences. I also relate to Hope because I have experienced what it feels like to fall for someone and lose sight of myself. I became so caught up in the person that I began putting my feelings and needs aside. Reading Heartbreak U allowed me to see parts of myself in each character. Overall, the book helped me realize that growing up is a journey of making mistakes, learning from them, and becoming more confident in who you are.

Mental health has a way of taking away the people you love while leaving you feeling helpless. I’m from Chicago, where almost every corner you turn can hold a story of trauma. It could involve your best friend, your aunt, your father, or, in my case, your mother. My mother struggled with postpartum depression during my early years of life, which caused her to be absent during important moments of my childhood. She tried to take on the responsibility of raising nine children, but with my father incarcerated, it became difficult for her to provide for and support our family. Due to the neglect and instability in our home, my siblings and I were almost taken into DCFS custody. However, my grandmother on my father’s side stepped in with the help of other family members and cared for us until my father was stable enough to take us back. Although my mother was absent throughout many important moments of my life, I do not hold that against her. I understand now that depression can change the way a person thinks, feels, and interacts with the people around them. I believe my mother wanted to be there for her children, but she did not know how. She was young herself and had grown up carrying the responsibility of caring for her own siblings because of the neglect she experienced from her mother. My mother tried, but depression became a battle that she struggled to overcome. Sometimes, I wish I could have done something to make her feel like she was not fighting that battle alone, but I was just a child. Now, I do everything I can to make sure what happened to my mother does not happen to someone else. When I notice someone struggling or see a concerning post online, I make sure to tell a trusted adult so that the person can receive the support they need. I have also participated in psychology class surveys and projects to better understand mental health and explore ways to address the challenges surrounding it. A major reason I dedicate myself to this kind of service is because it allows me to help others in a way I wish someone had helped my mother. I often think about how different her life, and possibly mine, could have been if she had received the support she needed. At the same time, I have learned that helping others does not mean neglecting myself. I have seen how constantly pouring your energy into other people can leave you with nothing left for yourself. Because of this, I make an effort to maintain balance in my own mental health. When I feel overwhelmed, I take brain breaks, talk to people I trust, and give myself maintenance days where I can relax and do something I enjoy. My experiences have taught me that mental health affects more than just the person struggling with it; it can affect entire families and communities. While I cannot change what happened to my mother, I can use what I experienced to become someone who notices when others need help, speaks up, and reminds people that they do not have to face their struggles alone.

The name Sascha is anything but ordinary. From the way it is spelled to the way it is pronounced, my name has a story of its own. My mother was a fan of the singer Beyoncé and originally wanted to name me after her. My father disagreed, so she chose Sascha, inspired by Beyoncé’s album Sasha Fierce. The name Sasha represented confidence, strength, and fearlessness. In many ways, those qualities have become a reflection of who I am. As a child, I was always looking for new ways to stay involved. In school, I participated in sports such as volleyball and basketball, but I quickly realized that basketball was not my strength. Dance, however, came naturally to me. When I lived with my grandmother, my younger sister and I would create our own dance routines and perform them at family gatherings. We would spend hours practicing and sometimes our performances even earned us prizes. Those moments encouraged me to join a profound majorette team located on the south side of Chicago. I had the opportunity to perform in Chicago’s famous Bud Billiken Parade. You’re probably wondering “what exactly is the Bud Billiken Parade”. Founded in 1929, the parade celebrates African American life, culture, and youth. Every year, dance teams and performers from across Illinois come together to showcase their talents as Chicago celebrates one of its greatest back-to-school traditions. For me, being part of that tradition was fulfilling. I was surrounded by music, movement, and thousands of people, yet I still felt like something was missing. The absence of my parents weighed on me throughout the day. By the time I reached my adolescent years I had already experienced the loss of both of my parents. I lost my mother at the age of ten due to a train accident. Two years later I lost my father after years of struggling with addiction and heart-related health complications. After losing my parents, I struggled to find myself. Everyone within my immediate circle had at least one parent in their corner while both of mine were gone. When I entered high school, I continued dancing, thats also the year I discovered my passion for cheerleading. Joining the cheer team was an experience unlike anything I had known prior. I discovered sisterhood, teamwork, and what it meant to be needed by a team. Unfortunately, I had to end my season early due to a severe knee injury. For two years, I could not physically cheer, though mentally I never stopped preparing for the day I could return. I made a commitment to my fellow teammates to encouraged them while being apart as a team manger during my off season. When I finally had the opportunity to cheer again I realized something: my talent was not simply my ability to perform, my talent was my ability to show up for others. Losing my parents taught me what it feels like to carry the absence of two people you depend on for physical and mental stability or support. Cheerleading taught me how to become that person for others. Cheerleading not only showcases my talent but it represents being apart of something and creating a safe peace to create, support and have influential individuals in your life.

They say when the Dean knows your name, it’s never for a good reason… Here’s my story. During my freshman year of high school, standing out was never particularly difficult for me. I was a social butterfly—the kind of person who could walk into a room and leave knowing everyone. However, I learned that being a “social butterfly” came with its perks, and not all of them were favorable. I became close with a large group of ninth graders who were considered popular like myself. Whenever they found themselves in an altercation, I had a habit of stepping in to defend them. At the time, I viewed it as being a loyal friend. In hindsight, I was slowly developing a reputation for being involved in situations that had very little to do with me. My loyalty had a way of landing me in the Dean’s office. Dean Ramsey was often referred to as “ The Big Men,” a nickname that seemed fitting given his 6’1” stature, bald head, and muscular build. Whenever you saw him approaching, you knew business was about to be handled. Ironically, Dean Ramsey was also responsible for selecting a group of students to participate in his “Peace Circle,” a student leadership program designed to resolve conflicts and promote a more positive school environment. Back to my story. Walking into his office, I was surrounded by several familiar faces I had seen throughout the hallways. One by one, we explained our involvement in the situation. When it was finally my turn, I did my best to explain my side. Unfortunately, my defense of my friends did not exactly earn me a standing ovation. Instead, I was assigned community service. However, my story does not stop there. Community service meant that I spent even more time in the Dean’s office, and what initially felt like a punishment became the beginning of a meaningful relationship. I began to develop a genuine connection with Ramsey. Ultimately, he encouraged me to interview for Peace Circle. To my surprise, I was selected. My experience in Peace Circle was great. I distanced myself from the friend groups I had once felt obligated to defend. Ramsey became one of my greatest supporters and advocates. Endless times, he encouraged me to aim higher, try new things, speak my mind, and release resentment toward situations beyond my control. Ramsey became more than just my Dean; he became a father figure. He refers to the members of Peace Circle as his daughters, a reflection of how deeply he cares for the students he mentors. His office became more than a place where students were sent when they were in trouble. For me, it became a place where I could talk, reflect, and laugh.  Being part of Peace Circle also meant that I had the inside scoop on certain things happening around school. So, before Ramsey announced his resignation to begin teaching at a college, he told us first. He knew how close we had become and wanted us to have the opportunity to process the news together. We spent time reminiscing about our favorite memories, sharing our best Ramsey impersonations, and laughing at the moments that had brought us closer together. It was bittersweet. With senior year approaching, I realized that I would no longer be able to walk into his office whenever I needed advice, hear one of his speeches, or simply sit down with my favorite vent buddy. You would never know that Ramsey is a big ole softy by simply seeing him walk through the halls, beneath the title of “Dean”.

“Paging Nurse Sanders to the delivery room.” Although those words have yet to echo through the halls of a hospital, I can already imagine the excitement and responsibility they would bring. I picture myself rushing into the room, not only prepared with the medical knowledge necessary to ensure a safe delivery, but also ready to provide reassurance and comfort to a mother experiencing one of the most life-changing moments of her life. The thought of being trusted to guide families through such a significant occasion fills me with purpose and reminds me why I aspire to become a nurse. My passion for the medical field began during my freshman year when I attended a medical seminar at my high school. Hearing healthcare professionals share their experiences inspired me to explore medicine beyond the classroom. Since then, I have spent my summers participating in medical internships at Rush University Medical Center and the University of Chicago Medicine, where I had the opportunity to learn from compassionate physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. One of the most influential mentors I met was Dr. Abdullah Pratt. His compassion, humility, and dedication to serving every patient with dignity showed me that healthcare is about much more than diagnosing and treating illnesses—it is about giving patients and their families hope, comfort, and confidence during some of the most challenging moments of their lives. Those experiences confirmed that my calling is to become a labor and delivery nurse, where I can provide that same level of care and support to families welcoming new life into the world. After I graduate high school, I plan to attend an Historical Black College University (HBCU) where I will major in nursing and earn my Bachelor’s in Science of Nursing. Once I’m more settled in my career and life expectancy, I will eventually go back to earn my Master’s in Science of Nursing. I expect college not to be easy however, graduating college as a nurse is going to have trials and tribulations but before my mother passed her dreams were of becoming a nurse and I want to build on her dream and succeed at it.  Over the years, I have seen through research and news that when it comes to healthcare African Americans are at a disadvantage. Furthermore, Black mothers are more likely to die during child birth due to medical negligence. Me becoming a labor and delivery nurse will give back to the community of women—specifically black women to be their voice when they don't feel like they don’t have one. I plan to be their advocate by making their needs and comfort a priority along with preventing maternal mortality.  I pledge to use fair judgment , ethical practices and avoiding harm to any and all patients because that’s what represents true compassion and the legacy I plan to build.

I hoped that by asking questions and listening without judgment I would gain a better understanding of how a person’s neighborhood, family, culture, and life experiences shape who they become. One of the first things that stood out to me was learning about the interviewee’s childhood in Lincoln Park. He described growing up in a neighborhood with safe parks, green spaces, museums, and countless community events. He explained how having access to those opportunities sparked his interest in both the arts and sciences at a young age. While my own upbringing was very different, it reminded me that when communities invest in their neighborhoods and work together they create environments where people can succeed and feel supported. The interviewee shared that growing up in an upper-class neighborhood made him recognize both the advantages and the limitations of his experience. He admitted that because he had access to many resources he was initially unaware of the struggles many families face in the inner city. I respected his honesty; it showed that he had reflected on his own privilege rather than ignoring it. He explained that Lincoln Park’s diversity exposed him to different cultures which helped him appreciate equality and inclusion. This perspective reminded me that every community has something valuable to teach but the experience may differ. He also mentioned his family and cultural background; both of his parents were active in his life and his grandparents were immigrants. He mentioned listening to Russian folklore, learning about his family’s journey to the United States, and hearing about his grandparents’ experience during World War II. The most impactful part of our conversation came when we discussed the challenges they have faced because of their Jewish identity. He explained that in recent years they have become more aware of the rise in antisemitism, both online and in person. He shared painful experiences of being called offensive names, hearing harmful stereotypes, and even waking up after someone had drawn swastikas on their feet and arm while they were asleep. Hearing this was heartbreaking. Although I have always known that prejudice exists, listening to someone describe their personal experiences made me understand how deeply discrimination can affect a person’s sense of belonging. What impressed me most was how he responded to these challenges. Instead of allowing those experiences to make him bitter, he became more aware of how words, jokes, and stereotypes can hurt people from every culture and religion. He explained that these experiences encouraged him to think more carefully about how his own actions and words might affect others. This conversation had a lasting impact on me because it reinforced the importance of listening before making judgments. I realized that meaningful conversations do not require two people to have identical backgrounds or opinions. Instead, they require openness, curiosity, and a genuine willingness to understand one another. I learned the meaning of those words when my oldest sister stepped up to raise me and siblings after the loss of our parents.  Growing up, I did not have a traditional childhood. When I was younger, I experienced the heartbreaking loss of both of my parents. After their passing, my oldest sister stepped into a role she never expected to have. Although she was not my biological mother, she became exactly that in every way that mattered. She took on the responsibility of raising me and my siblings, sacrificing her own time, dreams, and comfort to make sure we had stability, guidance, and love. Living with her has shaped me into the person I am today. Being raised in a single-parent household was not always easy. There were times when resources were limited, and I learned at a young age that I could not take things for granted. Watching one person carry the weight of an entire household taught me to be responsible and mature early. I often had to be understanding, patient, and willing to help whenever I would rather it was buying my own wants and needs or just helping my younger siblings in the morning to take less pressure off of her. Growing up in those circumstances taught me how to adapt to challenges instead of being discouraged by them. Through the example my sister set, I became deeply involved in my school and community. Alicia Bridges was born on April 2, 1986 in the city of Chicago. She had dreams of getting married, raising a big family like her favorite show from the 60s; “The Brady Bunch”. She dreamed of moving to the South, becoming a Southern belle, and attending the prestigious HBCU Spelman College. Alicia married Mario Sanders in 2008 and became Mrs. Alicia Bridges-Sanders while raising a family of eleven. Unfortunately, Alicia never left Chicago. Influenced by the environment where she was raised in public housing, she battled addiction and ultimately lost her life in 2019. This is the story of my mother. Seeing someone with so many dreams and aspirations that were never fully accomplished changed my perspective of how I viewed my own life. Like my mother, I am a resident in the city of Chicago in one of many impoverished neighborhoods where it is easy to believe that the latter to success is impossible to climb. When I reflect on my mother’s life I often think about her growing up in underserved community that lacked resources to help her achieve those said dreams. As my mother continued expanding her family with my father, she passed down those dreams for me and my siblings to attend a HBCU and become a southern belle to fulfill the life she was unable to accomplish for herself; my plan is to make that dream come true. I will be the first generation in my family to attend a four-year HBCU and earn my Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Life outside of Chicago steeping into a world of endless chances, embracing a fresh start, and finding a new horizon. College represents opportunity, purpose, and a chance to build a new legacy for my family. I plan to earn my Bachelor of Science in Nursing and become a labor and delivery nurse because I want to care for mothers and newborns during one of the most important moments of their lives. After earning my bachelor’s degree, I plan to continue my education by pursuing a Master of Science in Nursing. My goal is to become an advanced practice nurse who serves women in the most high rest medical event that a woman can experience and help improve mental healthcare. I want to mentor young girls who come from neighborhoods like mine to spread awareness that their circumstances do not define their future. Growing up, I learned that dreams alone are not enough. They require opportunity, determination, and someone who believes they are possible. My mother’s life reminds me every day that I cannot take my opportunities for granted. I want to make every sacrifice count; not only for myself but for my siblings and the generations that come after me. Earning a college degree will allow me to break the cycle of poverty, provide stability for my future family, and become the role model my younger siblings deserve. Receiving this scholarship would help remove financial barriers and allow me to focus on achieving my goals. More importantly, it would be an investment in a student who is determined to honor her mother’s legacy through education. My mother’s dreams did not end when she passed away. They continue through me every time I work toward my future. By earning my BSN, continuing on to graduate school, and dedicating my life to serving others, I will prove that where you begin does not determine where you finish.

As a regular Love Island viewer, I feel the audience is exposed to many sides of each couple’s relationship. However, I believe it would change everything if partners were able to see what their significant other says behind their back, as it would expose hidden truths and give a more honest view of their relationship. The goal of my Love Island challenge is to strengthen relationships by encouraging honest communication while revealing hidden feelings that contestants may be afraid to share openly. The challenge would also create suspense, emotional moments, and major viewer engagement by allowing islanders to hear what their partners truly think when they believe nobody is listening. My challenge is called " Roll the Tape”. Couples are separated into two soundproof rooms. Each islander believes they are participating in a private interview with the host or a relationship expert. During the interview, they are asked personal questions about their relationship, such as: "What is your biggest insecurity in this relationship?", "Do you think this relationship will work outside the villa?", "What is one thing your partner does that bothers you?", and "Have you ever doubted your connection with your partner?" The twist is that while one islander is answering these questions, their partner is secretly listening from the other room through headphones or a hidden speaker. The person being interviewed has no idea their partner can hear every word. After both partners complete their interviews, they reunite and discuss what they heard. Some couples may feel reassured after hearing genuine compliments and expressions of love, while others may discover concerns, doubts, or insecurities that have never been discussed before. This challenge would strengthen couples because it encourages honesty and forces important conversations that many people avoid. It could also reveal hidden truths about trust, commitment, and compatibility. Fans would likely love the challenge because it combines emotional vulnerability with dramatic revelations. Viewers would be eager to see whether couples become stronger after hearing the truth or whether unexpected confessions create tension throughout the villa. The challenge would create memorable television while helping islanders better understand their relationships.

Everyone seems to have a favorite number—some choose 4 for luck, 6 for family, or 7 for success. If I had to choose a number, it would be 2, but not for any positive reason. I hate the number 2 because it represents the two people I have lost and will never get back. The number follows me everywhere, serving as a reminder of the absence of both my mother and father. Losing both of my parents at a young age forced me to grow up quickly. I remember feeling angry, confused, and abandoned. I was upset that addiction had become more important than the needs of me and my siblings. I could not understand how drugs could take away the people who were supposed to protect and guide us. For years, I viewed their choices as selfish, and I carried resentment along with my grief. As I got older, however, I began to understand that my parents were also products of their environment. They grew up in public housing, surrounded by poverty, trauma, and substance abuse. Addiction was not something that affected only them. Growing up in Chicago, I witnessed how drugs have devastated entire families and communities. My parents were not the only loved ones affected by drugs. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, and extended family members have also faced substance abuse. Seeing so many lives cut short made me realize how deeply these cycles can impact generations. Although I struggled with anger, I eventually recognized that holding onto resentment would not change the past. Instead, I chose to learn from it. My parents’ struggles taught me the importance of making healthy decisions and breaking generational cycles. They also taught me compassion. While I was hurt by the choices they made, I now understand that addiction is a disease, and many people trapped in poverty never get the opportunity to see a life beyond their circumstances. That realization is one of the reasons education means so much to me. I believe it is important to experience life outside of poverty because exposure changes perspective. When people only see one way of living, it becomes difficult to imagine something different. I am determined to attend college out of state, not only to pursue my dream of becoming a labor and delivery nurse, but also to experience new environments, meet people from different backgrounds, and create opportunities that previous generations in my family never had. Traveling and continuing my education represent hope and the chance to redefine what is possible. The losses I have endured have shaped me into someone who values perseverance and purpose. Rather than allowing addiction and poverty to define my future, I have chosen to let them motivate me. I want my story to be one of healing, resilience, and opportunity. Through education, I hope to build a life that honors my parents’ memories while proving that generational cycles do not have to determine the course of future generations.

Failure has a way of exposing what success often hides. It strips away confidence and challenges the way we approach obstacles. Over time I began to realize that everyone experiences failure at some point in life; what truly matters is how we respond to it and what we learn from it. One experience in particular challenged everything I believed about failure and forced me to grow in a way I was not prepared for. I was not always the high achieving straight-A student that my sophomore and junior years reflect. At one point I was a freshman who was simply trying to keep up not realizing how deeply personal loss would affect my life. When I entered high school my transition was quickly disrupted by the loss of my father. His passing shifted my entire sense of stability and focus. He had always been my loudest supporter—the kind of father who would be in the stands cheering loud at every game. I still remember my first cheer game after his passing, looking into the crowd out of habit and realizing the seat where he should have been was empty. That moment stayed with me more than I knew how to express and it followed me into the classroom. During that time my priorities were not fully grounded in academics and my grades reflected that struggle. I ended my first semester earning mostly C’s, not because I lacked ability but because I was overwhelmed and unfocused. By the second semester I began to realize that I could not let my circumstances define my high school experience. Slowly I started making changes by refocusing on my education. It was not an immediate transformation but by the end of the year my GPA had improved and I moved up to rank 83. That year taught me that failure is not always a reflection of capability; sometimes it is a reflection of what someone is silently carrying. During sophomore year I chose not to join sports teams and instead became involved in academic organizations such as the National Honor Society and Debate Club. However, my past experiences caught up with me when it was time for the National Honor Society induction ceremony. At the same time, I had transformed academically; I became a straight-A student, made Honor Roll, and maintained a 4.0 GPA while taking honors courses. Still, I struggled to reconcile who I had been with who I was becoming, and I realized that growth is not only measured by grades, but also by how much you learn to believe in yourself. Unfortunately I was not inducted into National Honor Society and could not become an official member at that time. Although I was told my efforts did not go unnoticed, I was informed that my freshman year performance prevented my acceptance. Instead, I was offered a community service award as a form of recognition. Despite this acknowledgement I was left with a bitter feeling that made me question whether I should even try to join other clubs again. During the following school year, I initially avoided reapplying. With encouragement and support from my advisor I decided to take her advice and reapply. Today I am proud to serve as the National Honor Society President heading into my senior year, a position that reflects growth, resilience, commitment to leadership and service. As I continue to navigate life I reflect on these wise words “Failure doesn’t define who you are, it molds you into the turn you become.”

This statistic is more than a number to me—it represents mothers, families, and communities whose lives are forever changed. As a young Black girl who hopes to become a labor and delivery nurse, I want to be part of the solution by providing compassionate, high-quality care to mothers and newborns during one of the most important moments of their lives. My plans for the future are to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and become a labor and delivery nurse. I have always been passionate about helping others, and I believe nursing will allow me to make a meaningful difference in the lives of women, infants, and families. I am especially passionate about maternal health because every mother deserves to feel heard, supported, and safe throughout pregnancy and childbirth. My desire to pursue nursing is also deeply personal. My mother had a passion for healthcare and dreamed of becoming a nurse. Unfortunately, because of financial hardship and her untimely passing, she never had the opportunity to achieve that goal. Earning my nursing degree would not only allow me to pursue my own dreams, but it would also honor her memory and continue a dream she was unable to fulfill. Becoming the first person in my family to earn a BSN would be a source of tremendous pride and would show my younger siblings that perseverance and education can create opportunities despite difficult circumstances. Growing up, I experienced the devastating loss of both of my parents at a young age. My mother passed away unexpectedly, and my father later died from an overdose. Losing both parents forced me to mature quickly and taught me resilience, determination, and the importance of never giving up. Today, I live with my older sister, who has taken on the responsibility of helping care for our family. Together, we work hard to create a stable future while supporting my younger siblings, who look to me as a role model. After graduating from high school, I plan to attend college and pursue my nursing degree. My top choices include Florida A&M University, Howard University, and Tennessee State University. I am drawn to these universities because of their strong nursing programs, supportive communities, and commitment to developing future leaders. Attending an HBCU would allow me to learn in an environment that celebrates culture, excellence, and achievement while preparing me for a career dedicated to serving others. At the age of 16 I have had many experiences of being raised by a single parent. During my earlier stages of childhood , my mother abandoned me and my six other siblings at the time due to postpartum depression. At this time I was only three years old and our father was incarcerated serving a two year sentence. This lead to the state granting my paternal grandmother custody of me and my three sisters. My first recollection of having a nurturing relationship with a motherly figure was during the time I spent with my grandmother. She was my primary caregiver; raising me and my siblings alone until my father’s release from prison. My father was eventually released and remained in our lives constantly while attempting to work out his marriage with our mother. With that came the birth of my three younger siblings but ultimately my mother wasn’t mentally capable enough to be in our lives still; my father then became a single parent as well. Over the years I’ve battled with this mentally and emotionally. Statements or names that might come naturally to a child such as calling someone “mom” is something I’ve never got to experience. Considering the fact my mother wasn’t present so I never knew the value of a mother and daughter relationship. These were topics I didn’t feel comfortable discussing with my father ; not because he wasn’t present but because I didn’t want to carry the weight of his assumptions that he wasn’t good enough. My mother passed away in year 2019 so I never got any form of closure from her, later on my father proceeded her in death in year 2022. During this time I was just starting my 8th grade year which is a major transition from grade school to obtaining ones independence. Dealing with grieving my fathers death, absence of a mother along with her death, and now being raised by my eldest sister who never had experience as a mother to now a guardian of four; impacted me during this time. Instead of me figuring out high school alone my sister use resources that were available to us which resulted in my acceptance at South Shore Intl, enrollment in NHS and preparation for my ACT that I scored a composition 25. Though I endured challenges and changes throughout my childhood it has not dictated my present nor will it dictate my future. As I navigate through life I find my purpose with everything I do. I take leadership and volunteer at my neighborhood church New Life Convenient; where I am apart of Identity Teams and all girl leadership group. I extend resources that are presented to me and I my plan is to join the medical field as a midwife nurse to service others with compassion and gratitude. My journey doesn’t start there, I want assist families that endure similar crisis as my own and start nonprofit organizations that can provide support to families that may need it. I did not allow my past to prevent me from succeeding and life so I want to use my story to encourage the youth after me.

“Paging nurse Sanders to the delivery room”. My name is Sascha Sanders and I am a rising senior at South Shore International College Prep where I am ranked #21 in my class with a 4.0 GPA. I want to join the medical community because I enjoy servicing others; both physically and mentally. Passion and gratitude are important aspects in life and I feel matters most in health professional settings and environment. During my freshman year I attended a medical seminar at South Shore High School where I learned how to add pressure to a wound in order to stop the blood from flowing out. During summer of 2026 I will be working at Uchicago Health summer program with Yip and this will be my second medical enrichment during summer break. In my free time I enjoy watching realistic medical shows such as Grey's Anatomy and The Good Doctor to get an idea of what a work day feels like to the average physician or nurse. I am aware of how challenging the medical field maybe so to further challenge myself I took my schools recommendation on taking a full IB class schedule which are transferable college earned credited courses . I was born in 2009 after my parents joined in marriage the year prior to my birth. Most people would think being born into a two parent household equals love , stability and financial support but unforeseen circumstances changed that around for me. My mother faced postpartum depression during my early stages of life which resulted in her abandoning her life , marriage and children and ultimately lost her life in 2019. This left my father as a single parent of seven younger children and he also proceeded her in death in year 2022. My life was altered tremendously at the growing age of thirteen where I was just starting to figure out who I was and wanted to be. These challenges were hard to face yet inevitable; thanks to my resilient effort and family support I am beating the odds and making better choices for myself and my younger siblings. As I near high school graduation rather being overwhelmed with fear and uncertainty; I exudes confidence and optimism. With the experience of college tours I have my top HBCU’s I want to attend which are FAMU, HOWARD and TSU. I also mapped out my safety schools which are located in my city and state that still offer outstanding nursing and medical programs. I plan to attend a 4 year university and graduate with my BSN and one day become a midwife nurse practitioner. Within my 16 years life had taught me a lot and one key lesson I walk with everyday is life has so much to offer if you’re willing to strive , work hard , and execute.
